Grammar Analysis: Revelation 14:6-12

Focus: Three angels' messages in the sanctuary-service synthesis: judgment-hour proclamation, worship imperative, Babylon/wrath warning, and the commandments/patience of the saints.

Text

KJV (Rev 14:6): And I saw another angel fly in the midst of heaven, having the everlasting gospel to preach unto them that dwell on the earth, and to every nation, and kindred, and tongue, and people,

KJV (Rev 14:7): Saying with a loud voice, Fear God, and give glory to him; for the hour of his judgment is come: and worship him that made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and the fountains of waters.

KJV (Rev 14:8): And there followed another angel, saying, Babylon is fallen, is fallen, that great city, because she made all nations drink of the wine of the wrath of her fornication.

KJV (Rev 14:9): And the third angel followed them, saying with a loud voice, If any man worship the beast and his image, and receive his mark in his forehead, or in his hand,

KJV (Rev 14:10): The same shall drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is poured out without mixture into the cup of his indignation; and he shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels, and in the presence of the Lamb:

KJV (Rev 14:11): And the smoke of their torment ascendeth up for ever and ever: and they have no rest day nor night, who worship the beast and his image, and whosoever receiveth the mark of his name.

KJV (Rev 14:12): Here is the patience of the saints: here are they that keep the commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus.

Key Grammatical Features

1. εἶδον ... ἠκολούθησεν ... ἠκολούθησεν: Aorist Narrative Frame

  • Form: εἶδον (V-2AAI-1S), ἠκολούθησεν (V-AAI-3S, vv. 8-9). These are aorist active indicatives that move the visionary sequence forward.
  • Function: The angelic messages are not detached sayings. They are introduced inside John's visionary narrative by punctiliar aorist verbs: "I saw," then "another angel followed," then "another angel, a third, followed."
  • Significance: The grammar presents the proclamation as a staged sequence. The first message announces the judgment hour and Creator worship; the second announces Babylon's fall; the third warns against beast worship and mark reception. The aorist narrative frame makes the sequence ordered without making each message grammatically isolated from the others.
  • Grammar reference: aorist-active-indicative-narrative-chain.md

2. λέγων: Present Participle Introducing Angelic Speech

  • Form: λέγων appears in vv. 7, 8, and 9 as present active participle, nominative singular masculine (V-PAP-NSM), agreeing with the angelic speaker.
  • Function: The participle introduces direct discourse. It is not the main verb of the clause; it is attendant to the visionary narrative verb and opens the quoted proclamation.
  • Significance: Each message is framed as ongoing voiced proclamation from the angel who appears in the vision. The first and third are intensified by ἐν φωνῇ μεγάλῃ ("with a loud voice"), marking public, audible proclamation rather than private disclosure.
  • Grammar reference: participle-legon-discourse.md

3. εὐαγγελίσαι ἐπὶ ...: Aorist Infinitive and Universal Mission Target

  • Form: εὐαγγελίσαι is aorist active infinitive (V-AAN) from εὐαγγελίζω. It follows ἔχοντα εὐαγγέλιον αἰώνιον ("having an eternal gospel").
  • Function: The infinitive states the purpose or intended action connected to the angel's possession of the gospel: the angel has an eternal gospel "to proclaim."
  • Object structure: The repeated ἐπὶ phrases mark the proclamation's target: first τοὺς καθημένους ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς ("those dwelling on the earth"), then πᾶν ἔθνος καὶ φυλὴν καὶ γλῶσσαν καὶ λαόν ("every nation and tribe and tongue and people").
  • Significance: The grammar combines one gospel, one proclamation purpose, and a universal set of recipients. This supports reading the first angel's message as a worldwide judgment-hour proclamation rather than a local warning.
  • Word studies: G2098-euangelion.md, G2097-euangelizo.md, WG-gospel.md

4. Φοβήθητε ... δότε ... προσκυνήσατε: Aorist Imperative Cluster

  • Form: Φοβήθητε (V-AOM-2P), δότε (V-2AAM-2P), and προσκυνήσατε (V-AAM-2P) are second-person plural aorist imperatives.
  • Function: The first angel's message is built around imperatival summons: fear God, give him glory, and worship the Maker.
  • Significance: The aorist imperative often presents the commanded action as a whole, not as a description of an ongoing process. In this context, the grammar gives the message a decisive summons: respond to God in reverent fear, give glory to him, and direct worship to the Creator. The plural forms make the summons corporate and public.
  • Sanctuary-service relevance: The imperatives stand in direct relation to the causal ὅτι clause: the reason for the summons is that the hour of his judgment has come. The grammar therefore ties worship and glory-giving to the judgment-hour announcement.
  • Grammar reference: mood-aorist-imperative.md
  • Word studies: G5399-phobeo.md, WG-fear.md, G1391-doxa.md, G4352-proskyneo.md, WG-worship.md, WG-service-worship.md

5. ὅτι ἦλθεν ἡ ὥρα τῆς κρίσεως αὐτοῦ: Causal Judgment-Hour Ground

  • Form: ὅτι introduces the causal ground for the imperatives. ἦλθεν is second aorist active indicative, 3rd singular, from ἔρχομαι. ἡ ὥρα is nominative subject. τῆς κρίσεως αὐτοῦ is a genitive phrase modifying ὥρα.
  • Function: The first angel does not merely say judgment exists; he says "the hour of his judgment came / has come." The aorist ἦλθεν presents the arrival as a whole event.
  • Genitive force: τῆς κρίσεως αὐτοῦ is most naturally a descriptive/epexegetical genitive: the hour characterized by, or consisting in, his judgment. αὐτοῦ marks judgment as God's judgment.
  • Significance: Grammatically, the judgment-hour clause grounds the imperatives. The call to fear, glorify, and worship is not generic piety; it is the required response to the arrival of God's judgment hour.
  • Grammar references: aorist-active-indicative-narrative-chain.md, genitive-of-quality-apposition.md
  • Word studies: G2920-krisis.md, WG-judgment.md

6. τῷ ποιήσαντι: Articular Aorist Participle Naming the Creator

  • Form: ποιήσαντι is aorist active participle, dative singular masculine (V-AAP-DSM), with the article τῷ.
  • Function: The article plus participle forms a substantive: "the one who made." It is the dative object of προσκυνήσατε. The accusative series τὸν οὐρανὸν ... τὴν γῆν ... θάλασσαν ... πηγὰς ὑδάτων gives the scope of the Creator's act.
  • Significance: The worship command is grammatically directed to God specifically as Creator. The participle does not merely add a title; it defines the object of worship by his completed creative act.
  • Sanctuary-service relevance: The judgment-hour proclamation culminates in Creator worship. Grammar links the imperative προσκυνήσατε directly with τῷ ποιήσαντι, so worship is not an undefined religious act but allegiance to the Maker.

7. Ἔπεσεν ἔπεσεν ... πεπότικεν: Aorist Fall and Perfect Causal State

  • Form: Ἔπεσεν ἔπεσεν is a repeated second aorist active indicative, 3rd singular, from πίπτω. πεπότικεν is perfect active indicative, 3rd singular, from ποτίζω.
  • Function: The second angel announces Babylon's fall with emphatic repetition, then gives the explanatory relative clause: "who/which has made all nations drink..."
  • Significance: The aorist repetition announces the fall as a whole, completed proclamation. The perfect πεπότικεν presents Babylon's intoxicating action as completed with an ongoing resulting state: the nations stand as those whom Babylon has made to drink.
  • Judgment/wrath connection: The grammar of v. 8 prepares the reversal in v. 10. Babylon has made the nations drink wine associated with wrath and fornication; the beast-worshipper will drink the wine of God's wrath.
  • Grammar references: aorist-active-indicative-narrative-chain.md, tense-perfect.md, tense-perfect-indicative.md

8. τοῦ οἴνου τοῦ θυμοῦ τῆς πορνείας ... τοῦ οἴνου τοῦ θυμοῦ τοῦ Θεοῦ: Mirrored Genitive Chains

  • Form: v. 8 has ἐκ τοῦ οἴνου τοῦ θυμοῦ τῆς πορνείας αὐτῆς. v. 10 has ἐκ τοῦ οἴνου τοῦ θυμοῦ τοῦ Θεοῦ. Both are stacked genitive chains following ἐκ.
  • Function: The genitives are compact and layered. In v. 8, "wine," "wrath," and "fornication" are bound together under Babylon's agency. In v. 10, "wine," "wrath," and "God" are bound together under divine judgment.
  • Significance: The parallel grammar creates a reciprocal judgment pattern. Those who participate in Babylon's intoxicating system face God's wrath-cup. The construction is not merely lexical repetition; the genitive chains bind the two cups together as cause and consequence.
  • Grammar reference: genitive-of-quality-apposition.md
  • Word studies: G2372-thumos.md, G3709-orge.md, WG-wrath.md, WG-wine.md

9. Εἴ τις προσκυνεῖ ... καὶ λαμβάνει: Conditional Present Indicatives

  • Form: Εἴ introduces a conditional clause with present active indicative verbs: προσκυνεῖ (V-PAI-3S) and λαμβάνει (V-PAI-3S).
  • Function: The condition identifies the class under warning: anyone who worships the beast and its image and receives a mark.
  • Significance: The present indicatives are imperfective. They depict the activity as characteristic or ongoing within the warning frame, not as a bare punctiliar act. This fits the continuation in v. 11, where οἱ προσκυνοῦντες ("the ones worshiping") and εἴ τις λαμβάνει ("if anyone receives") repeat the same worship/mark categories.
  • Grammar reference: tense-present-active-indicative.md
  • Word studies: G4352-proskyneo.md, WG-worship.md, WG-continual-worship.md

10. αὐτὸς πίεται ... βασανισθήσεται: Emphatic Consequence and Passive Judgment

  • Form: αὐτὸς is nominative singular masculine pronoun, placed explicitly before πίεται. πίεται is future middle/deponent indicative, 3rd singular, from πίνω. βασανισθήσεται is future passive indicative, 3rd singular, from βασανίζω.
  • Function: The apodosis begins with καὶ αὐτὸς: "he himself also shall drink." The pronoun is emphatic and marks reciprocal consequence.
  • Significance: The person who worships and receives the mark becomes the one who must drink. The future passive βασανισθήσεται gives the judgment as something suffered by the subject, with no human agent named. In context, this is a strong candidate for divine passive: the agent of judgment is implied by the wrath of God and the presence of the Lamb.
  • Grammar reference: divine-passive.md
  • Word studies: G3709-orge.md, WG-wrath.md

11. τοῦ κεκερασμένου ἀκράτου: Perfect Passive Participle with Undiluted Wrath

  • Form: κεκερασμένου is perfect passive participle, genitive singular masculine (V-RPP-GSM), from κεράννυμι. It agrees with τοῦ οἴνου / τοῦ θυμοῦ in the genitive chain. ἀκράτου is genitive singular masculine adjective, "unmixed / undiluted."
  • Function: The participle describes the wrath-wine as having been prepared, while ἀκράτου specifies that it is undiluted.
  • Significance: The perfect passive presents the cup as already prepared and standing ready. The adjective blocks the idea of dilution. Grammatically, the cup of divine wrath is not improvised; it has been prepared in a settled state.
  • Grammar references: participle-perfect-passive-state.md, divine-passive.md

12. οἱ προσκυνοῦντες ... οἱ τηροῦντες: Articular Present Participles Defining Two Worship Communities

  • Form: οἱ προσκυνοῦντες (v. 11) and οἱ τηροῦντες (v. 12) are articular present active participles, nominative plural masculine.
  • Function: Both participles function substantivally: "the ones worshiping" and "the ones keeping."
  • Significance: The passage closes by contrasting two communities through grammar. One group is characterized by ongoing worship of the beast and reception of the mark. The other is characterized by endurance, commandment-keeping, and the faith/faithfulness of Jesus. The present participles mark ongoing identity and practice.
  • Commandments/patience relevance: Ὧδε ἡ ὑπομονὴ τῶν ἁγίων ἐστίν introduces a present identification: "Here is the patience/endurance of the saints." The saints are then appositionally described as the ones keeping God's commandments and the faith of Jesus.

13. τὴν πίστιν Ἰησοῦ: Genitive with Theological Load

  • Form: πίστιν is accusative singular feminine, direct object alongside τὰς ἐντολὰς. Ἰησοῦ is genitive singular masculine.
  • Function: The phrase can grammatically be read as "faith in Jesus" (objective genitive), "faithfulness of Jesus" (subjective genitive), or a compact genitive that draws both allegiance to Jesus and Jesus' own faithful witness into view.
  • Significance: Grammar alone does not settle the full theological range. What is clear syntactically is that πίστιν Ἰησοῦ is coordinated with τὰς ἐντολὰς τοῦ Θεοῦ under one participial description: the saints are those keeping both God's commandments and the faith/faithfulness associated with Jesus.

Clause Structure

First Angel: Revelation 14:6-7

  • Main visionary clause: Καὶ εἶδον ἄλλον ἄγγελον ("And I saw another angel").
  • Participial description 1: πετόμενον ἐν μεσουρανήματι ("flying in mid-heaven") describes the angel.
  • Participial description 2: ἔχοντα εὐαγγέλιον αἰώνιον ("having an eternal gospel") further describes the angel.
  • Infinitival purpose/action: εὐαγγελίσαι ("to proclaim gospel") explains what the gospel is held for.
  • Recipient field: ἐπὶ τοὺς καθημένους ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς ... καὶ ἐπὶ πᾶν ἔθνος... gives the scope of proclamation.
  • Speech introduction: λέγων ἐν φωνῇ μεγάλῃ introduces the angel's spoken message.
  • Imperative core: Φοβήθητε ... δότε ... προσκυνήσατε forms the command sequence.
  • Causal ground: ὅτι ἦλθεν ἡ ὥρα τῆς κρίσεως αὐτοῦ gives the reason for the first two imperatives and, by context, the whole summons.
  • Worship object: τῷ ποιήσαντι identifies the one to be worshiped as Creator.

Second Angel: Revelation 14:8

  • Main clause: Καὶ ἄλλος ἄγγελος δεύτερος ἠκολούθησεν ("And another angel, a second, followed").
  • Speech introduction: λέγων.
  • Proclamation: Ἔπεσεν ἔπεσεν Βαβυλὼν ἡ μεγάλη.
  • Explanatory relative clause: ἣ ... πεπότικεν πάντα τὰ ἔθνη. Babylon is identified by what she has made the nations drink.
  • Genitive chain: ἐκ τοῦ οἴνου τοῦ θυμοῦ τῆς πορνείας αὐτῆς gives the content/source of the intoxication.

Third Angel: Revelation 14:9-11

  • Main clause: Καὶ ἄλλος ἄγγελος τρίτος ἠκολούθησεν αὐτοῖς.
  • Speech introduction: λέγων ἐν φωνῇ μεγάλῃ.
  • Conditional protasis: Εἴ τις προσκυνεῖ ... καὶ λαμβάνει ... ("If anyone worships ... and receives ...").
  • Apodosis: καὶ αὐτὸς πίεται ... καὶ βασανισθήσεται. The subject of the condition becomes the subject who drinks and is tormented.
  • Wrath-cup expansion: τοῦ κεκερασμένου ἀκράτου ἐν τῷ ποτηρίῳ τῆς ὀργῆς αὐτοῦ describes the prepared, undiluted wrath-wine.
  • Judgment setting: ἐνώπιον ἀγγέλων ἁγίων καὶ ἐνώπιον τοῦ Ἀρνίου locates the judgment before the holy angels and the Lamb.
  • Result statement: ὁ καπνὸς ... ἀναβαίνει and οὐκ ἔχουσιν ἀνάπαυσιν state the continuing consequence.
  • Subject clarification: οἱ προσκυνοῦντες ... καὶ εἴ τις λαμβάνει restates the worship/mark identity.

Saints Identified: Revelation 14:12

  • Locative demonstrative: Ὧδε ("Here") marks the interpretive point of the preceding warning.
  • Nominal clause: ἡ ὑπομονὴ τῶν ἁγίων ἐστίν ("is the patience/endurance of the saints").
  • Appositional participial phrase: οἱ τηροῦντες ... identifies the saints as "the ones keeping."
  • Coordinated objects: τὰς ἐντολὰς τοῦ Θεοῦ and τὴν πίστιν Ἰησοῦ are joined under one participle, not split into unrelated identities.

Sanctuary-Service Synthesis Notes

  1. Judgment-hour proclamation: The causal clause ὅτι ἦλθεν ἡ ὥρα τῆς κρίσεως αὐτοῦ grammatically grounds the call to fear God, give glory, and worship the Creator. The judgment hour is not an aside; it is the reason the imperatives are issued.

  2. Worship imperative: προσκυνήσατε is an aorist imperative directed to τῷ ποιήσαντι, "the one who made." The worship issue is therefore grammatically Creator-directed before it is beast-contrastive. The third angel's warning then exposes the rival worship object.

  3. Babylon/wrath warning: The mirrored genitive chains in vv. 8 and 10 link Babylon's intoxicating cup with God's wrath-cup. Babylon has made nations drink; the beast-worshipper himself will drink. The grammar carries the reversal.

  4. Commandments and patience of the saints: Ὧδε marks v. 12 as the interpretive endpoint of the warnings. The saints are identified by endurance and by an articular present participle: οἱ τηροῦντες. This is a sustained identity: keeping God's commandments and holding the faith/faithfulness of Jesus.

  5. Two communities by participial identity: οἱ προσκυνοῦντες in v. 11 and οἱ τηροῦντες in v. 12 create a grammatical contrast. The issue is not merely isolated acts but settled allegiance expressed in ongoing worship or ongoing commandment-keeping.
