KJV: - v1: For the law having a shadow of good things to come, [and] not the very image of the things, can never with those sacrifices which they offered year by year continually make the comers thereunto perfect. - v2: For then would they not have ceased to be offered? because that the worshippers once purged should have had no more conscience of sins. - v3: But in those [sacrifices there is] a remembrance again [made] of sins every year. - v4: For [it is] not possible that the blood of bulls and of goats should take away sins. - v5: Wherefore when he cometh into the world, he saith, Sacrifice and offering thou wouldest not, but a body hast thou prepared me: - v6: In burnt offerings and [sacrifices] for sin thou hast had no pleasure. - v7: Then said I, Lo, I come (in the volume of the book it is written of me,) to do thy will, O God. - v8: Above when he said, Sacrifice and offering and burnt offerings and [offering] for sin thou wouldest not, neither hadst pleasure [therein]; which are offered by the law; - v9: Then said he, Lo, I come to do thy will, O God. He taketh away the first, that he may establish the second. - v10: By the which will we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once [for all]. - v11: And every priest standeth daily ministering and offering oftentimes the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins: - v12: But this man, after he had offered one sacrifice for sins for ever, sat down on the right hand of God; - v13: From henceforth expecting till his enemies be made his footstool. - v14: For by one offering he hath perfected for ever them that are sanctified. - v15: [Whereof] the Holy Ghost also is a witness to us: for after that he had said before, - v16: This [is] the covenant that I will make with them after those days, saith the Lord, I will put my laws into their hearts, and in their minds will I write them; - v17: And their sins and iniquities will I remember no more. - v18: Now where remission of these [is, there is] no more offering for sin. - v19: Having therefore, brethren, boldness to enter into the holiest by the blood of Jesus, - v20: By a new and living way, which he hath consecrated for us, through the veil, that is to say, his flesh; - v21: And [having] an high priest over the house of God; - v22: Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water. - v23: Let us hold fast the profession of [our] faith without wavering; (for he [is] faithful that promised;) - v24: And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works: - v25: Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some [is]; but exhorting [one another]: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.

Clause Structure

Unit Grammar Function in the Argument
10:1-4 Main contrast between Σκιὰν (shadow) and εἰκόνα (image), with the law as nominative subject (ὁ νόμος) and inability stated by οὐδέποτε δύναται ... τελειῶσαι. Establishes that repeated Levitical sacrifices are typological and incapable of bringing worshipers to the goal expressed by τελειόω.
10:5-10 Quotation chain introduced by present-tense speech verbs (λέγει, λέγων) and resolved by ἀναιρεῖ ... ἵνα ... στήσῃ plus the periphrastic perfect passive ἡγιασμένοι ἐσμὲν. Moves from rejected sacrifices to the will/body/offering of Christ as the means by which believers stand sanctified.
10:11-14 Repeated priestly ministry: ἕστηκεν ... λειτουργῶν ... προσφέρων versus Christ: προσενέγκας ... ἐκάθισεν and τετελείωκεν. Contrasts standing, daily, repeated service with one completed offering followed by enthroned session.
10:15-18 Covenant citation framed by the Spirit's testimony, including οὐ μὴ μνησθήσομαι ἔτι and the verbless conclusion οὐκέτι προσφορὰ περὶ ἁμαρτίας. Grounds the end of further sin-offering in covenant forgiveness/remission.
10:19-25 Participial grounds (Ἔχοντες, implied continuation through v21) lead to hortatory subjunctives: προσερχώμεθα, κατέχωμεν, κατανοῶμεν, with supporting perfect passive participles in v22. Access to the holiest through blood/veil/high priest becomes the grammatical basis for drawing near, holding fast, and communal exhortation.

Similar-pattern check: greek_parser.py --similar "HEB 10:1" --min-sim 0.6 --limit 5, --similar "HEB 10:14" --min-sim 0.55 --limit 5, and --similar "HEB 10:22" --min-sim 0.55 --limit 5 returned no NT verses above those thresholds. The relevant parallels for this passage are therefore lexical/thematic and intra-passage grammatical contrasts rather than close whole-verse morphology matches.

Key Grammatical Features

1. Σκιὰν ... οὐκ αὐτὴν τὴν εἰκόνα - shadow, not the image itself

  • Forms: Σκιὰν = accusative singular feminine noun (G4639); εἰκόνα = accusative singular feminine noun (G1504); ἔχων = present active participle nominative singular masculine modifying ὁ νόμος; τῶν μελλόντων ἀγαθῶν = genitive plural phrase, with μελλόντων as present active participle functioning substantivally/adjectivally.
  • Syntax: The law is the nominative subject with ἔχων supplying its characterized possession: it has a shadow of the coming good things, not the very image of the realities. The negative contrast is sharpened by οὐκ αὐτὴν τὴν εἰκόνα.
  • Significance: Grammatically, Hebrews 10:1 does not make the sacrificial system the final referent. It makes it a shadow-bearing system whose repeated sacrifices cannot bring the worshipers to the intended goal.
  • Word studies: G4639 σκιά, G1504 εἰκών, WG-shadow, WG-image, WG-typology.

2. οὐδέποτε δύναται ... τελειῶσαι / οὐδέποτε δύνανται περιελεῖν - repeated offerings lack completing/removing power

  • Forms: δύναται (10:1) = present middle/passive indicative 3rd singular; τελειῶσαι = aorist active infinitive of τελειόω; δύνανται (10:11) = present middle/passive indicative 3rd plural; περιελεῖν = second aorist active infinitive; οὐδέποτε negates both clauses.
  • Syntax: In 10:1, οὐδέποτε δύναται ... τελειῶσαι states categorical inability: the law, by the same repeated yearly sacrifices, can never perfect the ones drawing near. In 10:11, αἵτινες οὐδέποτε δύνανται περιελεῖν ἁμαρτίας applies the same grammar to the repeated sacrifices themselves: they can never remove sins.
  • Significance: The infinitives name the outcome the system cannot accomplish. The issue is not merely frequency; the present-tense ability verbs plus οὐδέποτε make inability characteristic, while the aorist infinitives view the needed result as a whole act: perfecting/removing.
  • Grammar references: Present Active Indicative for present-tense aspect; Perfect Tense - Indicative for the contrast with 10:14.
  • Word studies: G5048 τελειόω, G4374 προσφέρω, G2378 θυσία, G266 ἁμαρτία, WG-perfection, WG-sacrifice, WG-offerup.

3. ἡγιασμένοι ἐσμὲν and τοὺς ἁγιαζομένους - sanctified state and sanctified people

  • Forms: ἡγιασμένοι (10:10) = perfect passive participle nominative plural masculine; ἐσμὲν = present active indicative 1st plural of εἰμί; ἁγιαζομένους (10:14) = present passive participle accusative plural masculine.
  • Syntax: Hebrews 10:10 uses a periphrastic construction (perfect passive participle + εἰμί) to state the believers' standing: "we are sanctified," with the perfect participle foregrounding the resultant state. Hebrews 10:14 then identifies the perfected group as τοὺς ἁγιαζομένους, the sanctified/being-sanctified ones.
  • Significance: The passage holds together accomplished consecration and the identity/process of the people consecrated. The grammar supports a real standing produced διὰ τῆς προσφορᾶς τοῦ σώματος Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ ἐφάπαξ while still describing the recipients with a present passive participle in v14.

4. μίαν ... θυσίαν / μιᾷ ... προσφορᾷ ... τετελείωκεν εἰς τὸ διηνεκές - one offering with abiding result

  • Forms: προσενέγκας (10:12) = aorist active participle nominative singular masculine; ἐκάθισεν = aorist active indicative 3rd singular; μιᾷ προσφορᾷ (10:14) = dative singular feminine, means/instrument; τετελείωκεν = perfect active indicative 3rd singular; εἰς τὸ διηνεκές = prepositional phrase expressing perpetuity/continuance.
  • Syntax: The aorist participle προσενέγκας is antecedent to the main aorist ἐκάθισεν: having offered one sacrifice, he sat down. Verse 14 gives the theological result with the perfect τετελείωκεν: by one offering he has perfected, with εἰς τὸ διηνεκές reinforcing the continuing force of the result.
  • Significance: This is the central grammatical contrast with 10:1 and 10:11. The repeated sacrifices never perfect or remove; Christ's one offering has perfected. The perfect tense does not describe an endlessly repeated sacrifice, but a completed act whose result stands.
  • Grammar reference: Perfect Tense - Indicative, which includes Hebrews 10:14 as a consummative/resultative perfect example.
  • Word studies: G2178 ἐφάπαξ, G5048 τελειόω, G2378 θυσία, WG-perfection, WG-sacrifice.

5. Ἔχοντες ... προσερχώμεθα - access through blood, veil, and priestly ministry

  • Forms: Ἔχοντες (10:19) = present active participle nominative plural masculine; παρρησίαν = accusative singular feminine; εἴσοδον = accusative singular feminine; τῶν ἁγίων = genitive plural neuter; ἐνεκαίνισεν (10:20) = aorist active indicative 3rd singular; καταπετάσματος = genitive singular neuter; ἱερέα μέγαν (10:21) = accusative singular masculine phrase; προσερχώμεθα (10:22) = present middle/passive subjunctive 1st plural.
  • Syntax: The participial basis begins with Ἔχοντες οὖν: because the brethren have boldness for entrance into the holiest by Jesus' blood, and because there is a great priest over God's house, the main exhortation follows: προσερχώμεθα. Verse 20 appositionally identifies the way as through the veil, τοῦτ' ἔστιν τῆς σαρκὸς αὐτοῦ.
  • Significance: The grammar makes access the consequence of the preceding sacrificial-priestly argument. The veil/flesh statement is embedded in the description of the inaugurated way, while the high-priest phrase in v21 supplies the continuing priestly frame for the exhortations.
  • Word studies: G2665 καταπέτασμα, G4561 σάρξ, G2409 ἱερεύς, G129 αἷμα, WG-priests, WG-flesh, WG-tabernacle, WG-temple.

6. ῥεραντισμένοι ... λελουσμένοι - perfect passive cleansing imagery attached to drawing near

  • Forms: ῥεραντισμένοι = perfect passive participle nominative plural masculine of ῥαντίζω; λελουσμένοι = perfect passive participle nominative plural masculine of λούω; both modify the implied "we" of προσερχώμεθα.
  • Syntax: The command-like hortatory subjunctive προσερχώμεθα is accompanied by perfect passive participles describing the condition in which the community draws near: hearts having been sprinkled from an evil conscience and body having been washed with pure water.
  • Significance: The perfect passive participles express prerequisite/resultant states, not actions the worshipers are presently performing in the clause. This supports the access logic: draw near as those who stand under cleansing/sprinkling realities tied to the preceding blood/offering argument.
  • Grammar references: Greek Perfect Passive Participle, Divine Passive.
  • Word studies: G2511 καθαρίζω, G2513 καθαρός, WG-forgiveness, WG-sin.
