WG: Intercession¶
Overview¶
The intercession concept in the NT involves a tight cluster of 4 words — a verb, its intensified compound, its cognate noun, and a related mediator noun — distributed across Romans, Hebrews, and 1 Timothy.
Word Group Members¶
| Strong's | Word | Transliteration | POS | Occurrences | Role in Concept | Library Entry |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| G1793 | ἐντυγχάνω | entynchanō | verb | 5 | The action (to intercede, appeal) | G1793 |
| G5241 | ὑπερεντυγχάνω | hyperentynchanō | verb | 1 | Intensified action (to intercede on behalf of) | G5241 |
| G1783 | ἔντευξις | enteusis | noun | 2 | The event/act (intercession, prayer) | G1783 |
| G3316 | μεσίτης | mesitēs | noun | 6 | The agent (mediator, go-between) | G3316 |
Relationships¶
Shared Roots¶
- ἐντυγχάνω (G1793), ὑπερεντυγχάνω (G5241), ἔντευξις (G1783) — all from root τυγχάνω (G5177) "to hit upon" + ἐν "in"
- ὑπερεντυγχάνω adds ὑπέρ "on behalf of" as intensifying prefix
- μεσίτης (G3316) shares the mediatorial function but derives from μέσος (G3319) "middle"
Co-occurrence (appear in same verses)¶
No pairwise co-occurrence. Each word occupies distinct verses: - G1793 appears in Acts 25:24; Rom 8:27, 8:34, 11:2; Heb 7:25 - G5241 appears only in Rom 8:26 - G1783 appears in 1 Tim 2:1; 4:5 - G3316 appears in Gal 3:19–20; 1 Tim 2:5; Heb 8:6; 9:15; 12:24
However, Rom 8:26–27 and 8:34 place G5241 and G1793 in adjacent verses within the same argument (the Spirit intercedes [G5241] → he who searches hearts knows the Spirit's mind because he intercedes [G1793]).
Louw-Nida Domain Overlap¶
- G1793, G1783, G5241 are all in domain 033035 (Intercede)
- G1793 is also in domain 033012 (Ask For, Request)
- G3316 is in domain 031003 (Agree, Consent — go-between)
Roles in the Concept¶
- Action: ἐντυγχάνω (G1793) — the interceding itself; appealing to an authority on someone's behalf
- Intensified action: ὑπερεντυγχάνω (G5241) — intercession with intensity, used of the Spirit's groaning beyond words
- Event/practice: ἔντευξις (G1783) — intercession as a noun; prescribed practice in congregational prayer
- Agent: μεσίτης (G3316) — the mediator who stands between parties; Christ as mediator of a better covenant
Key Passages Where Multiple Group Words Appear in Close Context¶
- Rom 8:26–34 — G5241 (v. 26: Spirit intercedes with groanings) + G1793 (v. 27: Spirit intercedes according to God's will; v. 34: Christ intercedes at God's right hand). The fullest NT treatment of intercession, with both Spirit and Christ as intercessors.
- 1 Tim 2:1–5 — G1783 (v. 1: intercessions prescribed for all people) + G3316 (v. 5: one mediator between God and men). Connects the practice of intercession to Christ's unique mediatorial role.
