Grammar Analysis: 2 Thessalonians 2:1-12 (The Apostasy / Man of Lawlessness Pericope)

Mode: Passage unit analysis (context-neutral) Scope: 2 Thess 2:1-12 as a coherent discourse unit Aim: Verse-by-verse parsing, tense/mood/voice map, clausal-structure analysis, documentation of the five titles for the eschatological opponent, and the temporal-modal chain from "already-working" to final destruction. Grammar only; interpretive identification is left to downstream studies.

1. Text (Nestle 1904 / parser output with KJV)

v. Greek (N1904) KJV
1 Ἐρωτῶμεν δὲ ὑμᾶς, ἀδελφοί, ὑπὲρ τῆς παρουσίας τοῦ Κυρίου ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ καὶ ἡμῶν ἐπισυναγωγῆς ἐπ' αὐτόν, Now we beseech you, brethren, by the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, and by our gathering together unto him,
2 εἰς τὸ μὴ ταχέως σαλευθῆναι ὑμᾶς ἀπὸ τοῦ νοὸς μηδὲ θροεῖσθαι μήτε διὰ πνεύματος μήτε διὰ λόγου μήτε δι' ἐπιστολῆς ὡς δι' ἡμῶν, ὡς ὅτι ἐνέστηκεν ἡ ἡμέρα τοῦ Κυρίου. That ye be not soon shaken in mind, or be troubled, neither by spirit, nor by word, nor by letter as from us, as that the day of Christ is at hand.
3 μή τις ὑμᾶς ἐξαπατήσῃ κατὰ μηδένα τρόπον· ὅτι ἐὰν μὴ ἔλθῃ ἡ ἀποστασία πρῶτον καὶ ἀποκαλυφθῇ ὁ ἄνθρωπος τῆς ἀνομίας, ὁ υἱὸς τῆς ἀπωλείας, Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition;
4 ὁ ἀντικείμενος καὶ ὑπεραιρόμενος ἐπὶ πάντα λεγόμενον Θεὸν ἢ σέβασμα, ὥστε αὐτὸν εἰς τὸν ναὸν τοῦ Θεοῦ καθίσαι, ἀποδεικνύντα ἑαυτὸν ὅτι ἔστιν Θεός. Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God.
5 Οὐ μνημονεύετε ὅτι ἔτι ὢν πρὸς ὑμᾶς ταῦτα ἔλεγον ὑμῖν; Remember ye not, that, when I was yet with you, I told you these things?
6 καὶ νῦν τὸ κατέχον οἴδατε, εἰς τὸ ἀποκαλυφθῆναι αὐτὸν ἐν τῷ αὐτοῦ καιρῷ. And now ye know what withholdeth that he might be revealed in his time.
7 τὸ γὰρ μυστήριον ἤδη ἐνεργεῖται τῆς ἀνομίας· μόνον ὁ κατέχων ἄρτι ἕως ἐκ μέσου γένηται. For the mystery of iniquity doth already work: only he who now letteth will let, until he be taken out of the way.
8 καὶ τότε ἀποκαλυφθήσεται ὁ ἄνομος, ὃν ὁ Κύριος Ἰησοῦς ἀνελεῖ τῷ πνεύματι τοῦ στόματος αὐτοῦ καὶ καταργήσει τῇ ἐπιφανείᾳ τῆς παρουσίας αὐτοῦ, And then shall that Wicked be revealed, whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming:
9 οὗ ἐστιν ἡ παρουσία κατ' ἐνέργειαν τοῦ Σατανᾶ ἐν πάσῃ δυνάμει καὶ σημείοις καὶ τέρασιν ψεύδους Even him, whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders,
10 καὶ ἐν πάσῃ ἀπάτῃ ἀδικίας τοῖς ἀπολλυμένοις, ἀνθ' ὧν τὴν ἀγάπην τῆς ἀληθείας οὐκ ἐδέξαντο εἰς τὸ σωθῆναι αὐτούς. And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved.
11 καὶ διὰ τοῦτο πέμπει αὐτοῖς ὁ Θεὸς ἐνέργειαν πλάνης εἰς τὸ πιστεῦσαι αὐτοὺς τῷ ψεύδει, And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie:
12 ἵνα κριθῶσιν πάντες οἱ μὴ πιστεύσαντες τῇ ἀληθείᾳ ἀλλὰ εὐδοκήσαντες τῇ ἀδικίᾳ. That they all might be damned who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness.

Verbal frame: one finite pres.act.ind. (Ἐρωτῶμεν "we request/ask"). The rest is a prepositional appeal-frame: ὑπέρ + double genitive (τῆς παρουσίας … τοῦ Κυρίου … καὶ ἡμῶν ἐπισυναγωγῆς). παρουσία here refers to Christ's; ἐπισυναγωγή is deverbal noun "gathering-together" (see G3952-parousia).

16 ἡ ἡμέρα τοῦ Κυρίου ἡμέρα / κύριος G2250/G2962 N-NSF + T-GSM N-GSM

Verbal frame: articular infinitive construction εἰς τὸ μὴ … σαλευθῆναι … μηδὲ θροεῖσθαι — aorist passive inf. (punctiliar "be shaken") contrasted with present passive inf. (ongoing "be disturbed"). The perfect ἐνέστηκεν with day-of-Lord subject is the content of the alleged rumor: "the Day of the Lord has arrived / is present."

Note on TR variant v.2: Byzantine/TR reads ἡ ἡμέρα τοῦ Χριστοῦ ("day of Christ"); critical text reads ἡ ἡμέρα τοῦ Κυρίου ("day of the Lord"). KJV follows TR ("day of Christ"); N1904/critical follows ℵ A B D ("day of the Lord"). Variant does not affect the verb analysis.

16 ὁ υἱὸς υἱός G5207 T-NSM + N-NSM (appositional)
17 τῆς ἀπωλείας ἀπώλεια G684 T-GSF + N-GSF (attributive gen.)

Verbal frame: prohibitive aorist subjunctive (μή … ἐξαπατήσῃ) → causal ὅτι + third-class conditional-negative (ἐὰν μή + double aorist subjunctive ἔλθῃ … ἀποκαλυφθῇ). The apodosis of the conditional is unexpressed — an anacoluthon supplied in KJV as bracketed "[that day shall not come]". The two coordinated subjunctives specify the content of the unless-clause.

Textual variant v.3: τῆς ἀνομίας (NA/critical, G458 "lawlessness") vs. τῆς ἁμαρτίας (TR/Byz, G266 "sin"). KJV = "man of sin" = TR. See textual-variant-2thess-2-3 for full analysis.

16 ἔστιν εἰμί G1510 V-PAI-3S "he is"
17 Θεός θεός G2316 N-NSM (predicate nom.)

Verbal frame: two articular pres. mid./pass. participles (ἀντικείμενος, ὑπεραιρόμενος) in apposition to ὁ ἄνθρωπος τῆς ἀνομίας of v.3 — continuous/characterizing action. λεγόμενον (pres.pass.ptcp) modifies πάντα Θεόν = "every so-called god." ὥστε + acc.-infinitive (αὐτὸν … καθίσαι) is standard result construction. ἀποδεικνύντα (pres.act.ptcp acc.) agrees with αὐτόν and frames ongoing self-display. ὅτι ἔστιν Θεός = content clause of proclamation.

Textual variant v.4: critical text reads εἰς τὸν ναὸν τοῦ Θεοῦ; TR/Byz adds ὡς Θεόν ("as God sitteth in the temple of God" — KJV preserves this). The word ὡς Θεόν is attested in D F G Ψ 𝔐 and the Latin tradition; omitted by ℵ A B.

7 ἔλεγον λέγω G3004 V-IAI-1S (Impf Act Ind 1s) "I was telling/used to tell"
8 ὑμῖν σύ G4771 P-2DP

Verbal frame: rhetorical question. Temporal pres.ptcp ὢν πρὸς ὑμᾶς ("while being with you") + iterative/durative imperfect ἔλεγον ("I was repeatedly telling"). Aspectual pair: ongoing presence (ptcp) + ongoing habitual speech (impf).

7 ἐν τῷ αὐτοῦ καιρῷ ἐν / αὐτός / καιρός G1722/G846/G2540 Prep + T-DSM + P-GSN + N-DSM "in his own time"

Verbal frame: articular neuter participle τὸ κατέχον = "the restrainer (impersonal/neuter)." Stative perfect οἴδατε. εἰς τὸ + aor.pass.inf. with acc. subject (αὐτόν) = purpose/result articular infinitive: "so that he might be revealed in his own time." Agency implicit (divine passive candidate — see divine-passive).

10 γένηται γίνομαι G1096 V-2ADS-3S (Aor Mid-Dep Subj 3s) "comes to be / becomes"

Verbal frame: the clause contains an ellipsis. Literal word-order: "only the-one-restraining at-present until out-of midst he-becomes." Most translations supply a verb ("will do so" / KJV "will let"). The pres.act.ptcp ὁ κατέχων (masculine, personal) is formally distinct from v.6's τὸ κατέχον (neuter, impersonal) — same verb κατέχω but different grammatical gender. Aorist middle subjunctive γένηται after ἕως = "until he come to be out of the midst" (idiom: removal/departure). See G2722-katecho.

Textual variant v.7: both N1904 and TR read τῆς ἀνομίας at v.7 (no variant here — the chain is unambiguous in the mystery-clause regardless of the v.3 decision).

12 τῆς παρουσίας αὐτοῦ παρουσία / αὐτός G3952/G846 T-GSF + N-GSF + P-GSM "of his coming"

Verbal frame: three finite verbs, all future indicative: - ἀποκαλυφθήσεται (fut. pass. ind.) — subject ὁ ἄνομος - ἀνελεῖ (fut. act. ind., 2nd fut. contract form) — subject ὁ Κύριος Ἰησοῦς - καταργήσει (fut. act. ind.) — subject implied "the Lord"

Two dative-of-means phrases balance chiastically: τῷ πνεύματι τοῦ στόματος (method 1, Isa 11:4 echo) ‖ τῇ ἐπιφανείᾳ τῆς παρουσίας (method 2, Christological climax). See G337-anaireo, G2673-katargeo, G459-anomos, G2015-epiphaneia, G3952-parousia.

Textual variant v.8: the verb ἀνελεῖ (Fut Act Ind, ἀναιρέω) has a minor variant ἀναλώσει (Fut Act Ind, ἀναλίσκω "consume, destroy") attested in A D F G 1739 latt and some fathers. ℵ B P 0278 33 𝔐 read ἀνελεῖ. The KJV "shall consume" can render either; both yield active-future-destruction. The ὁ Κύριος Ἰησοῦς subject (versus shorter ὁ Κύριος in some MSS) is also variable. No variant affects the voice/mood/tense mapping.

8 καὶ τέρασιν καί / τέρας G2532/G5059 Conj + N-DPN
9 ψεύδους ψεῦδος G5579 N-GSN (attributive gen. "of lying")

Verbal frame: single finite ἐστιν. Critical: the subject is οὗ ἡ παρουσία — "his coming/advent" — with the antecedent being ὁ ἄνομος of v.8. The same noun παρουσία is used here of the man-of-lawlessness as was used in v.1, v.8 of Christ. The attributive genitive ψεύδους may modify τέρασιν alone or all three nouns (δυνάμει / σημείοις / τέρασιν) — Greek ambiguity.

Verbal frame: continuing dative phrase from v.9 (τοῖς ἀπολλυμένοις). The dative participle ἀπολλυμένοις is morph-coded V-PEP (present middle/passive participle) — describes ongoing process. Aorist middle deponent ἐδέξαντο is the key finite. εἰς τὸ σωθῆναι = articular inf. of result/purpose: "so as to be saved / that they might be saved." The negation οὐκ + aorist denies the reception.

Verbal frame: gnomic/futuristic present πέμπει ("God sends") — KJV renders as future "shall send." εἰς τὸ + aor.act.inf. (πιστεῦσαι) with acc. subject — purpose/result articular infinitive. ἐνέργεια πλάνης reuses the ἐνεργ- root that appeared in v.7 (ἐνεργεῖται) and v.9 (ἐνέργειαν τοῦ Σατανᾶ): same noun-family, three different subjects (mystery-of-lawlessness / Satan / God). 8 τῇ ἀδικίᾳ ἀδικία G93 T-DSF + N-DSF

Verbal frame: ἵνα + aorist passive subjunctive (κριθῶσιν) = purpose/result of God's sending in v.11. Two coordinated aorist active participles modifying πάντες: μὴ πιστεύσαντες (negated) ‖ εὐδοκήσαντες (positive). The participles are aoristic/antecedent in aspect — the non-belief and the pleasure-in-unrighteousness are the causally-prior ground for the judgment verb κριθῶσιν.

Present Infinitive θροεῖσθαι (v.2, pass.) 1

Observations on finite-verb distribution: - Future indicatives are clustered exclusively at v.8 — the verse describes the climactic revelation-and-destruction panel. All three futures have ὁ ἄνομος / ὁ Κύριος Ἰησοῦς as referents in the ὁ Κύριος … ὃν …-frame. - The single aorist indicative (ἐδέξαντο, v.10) is the only past-time assertion in the pericope about human agents — it explains why the deception succeeds. - Perfects are stative-epistemic: ἐνέστηκεν = the asserted content of the rumor ("has-arrived-state"); οἴδατε = "you-know-state" of the addressees. - Five aorist subjunctives and five aorist infinitives dominate the modal/non-indicative load — the pericope is heavily prospective / irrealis / purpose-result, fitting eschatological prediction rather than narrative.

εὐδοκήσαντες εὐδοκέω V-AAP-NPM 12 Aor. act. ptcp; "having-taken-pleasure"

Middle-voice participles (noteworthy): - ἀντικείμενος (v.4, V-PNP = pres. mid./pass. deponent) — ἀντίκειμαι is a middle-only deponent lexeme meaning "oppose, be adversary to." Morph code PNP marks the middle-deponent pattern. See G480-antikeimai. - ὑπεραιρόμενος (v.4, V-PPP) — passive-form with middle-reflexive meaning ("exalting himself above"). See G5229-hyperairo. - ἀπολλυμένοις (v.10, V-PEP = pres. mid./pass.) — ἀπόλλυμι middle = "to perish, be ruined" (the perishers are both agent-in-process and passive victims of their own trajectory).

τῆς ἀληθείας 10 τὴν ἀγάπην Obj. gen. ("love-for-the-truth")
πλάνης 11 ἐνέργειαν Attributive gen. ("working-of-delusion")

Pattern: the pericope is saturated with Semitic-style attributive genitives of quality (ἄνθρωπος τῆς ἀνομίας, υἱὸς τῆς ἀπωλείας, μυστήριον τῆς ἀνομίας, ἀπάτῃ ἀδικίας, ἐνέργειαν πλάνης, τέρασιν ψεύδους). These are the "man of X / son of X / mystery of X" constructions — functionally adjectival, often rendered "the wicked man / the ruined son" etc.

4. Clausal Structure

v.1-2 — opening appeal + purpose clause

Element Greek Role
Main verb Ἐρωτῶμεν "We ask/beseech" (pres.act.ind.)
Appeal frame ὑπὲρ τῆς παρουσίας … καὶ … ἐπισυναγωγῆς "Concerning the coming … and the gathering" (topic)
Purpose/content εἰς τὸ μὴ … σαλευθῆναι … μηδὲ θροεῖσθαι Articular inf. of purpose — "to the end that you not be shaken or disturbed"
Specification (triple negation) μήτε διὰ πνεύματος μήτε διὰ λόγου μήτε δι' ἐπιστολῆς Three excluded channels
Ground of the disturbance ὡς ὅτι ἐνέστηκεν ἡ ἡμέρα τοῦ Κυρίου "as though that the day of the Lord has arrived" (content of the alleged rumor)

v.3-4 — prohibitive command + causal-conditional grounding (the structural core)

v.3a μή τις ὑμᾶς ἐξαπατήσῃ κατὰ μηδένα τρόπον
[prohibitive aor.subj. — "let no one deceive you by any means"]

v.3b ὅτι ← causal/grounding conjunction ("because / for")
          ἐὰν μὴ ← "unless, except"
ἔλθῃ ἡ ἀποστασία πρῶτον [aor.subj. 1, with adv. πρῶτον]
          καὶ
            ἀποκαλυφθῇ ὁ ἄνθρωπος τῆς ἀνομίας [aor.pass.subj. 2]
, ὁ υἱὸς τῆς ἀπωλείας, [appositional title]

v.4 ὁ ἀντικείμενος καὶ ὑπεραιρόμενος … [articular participial expansion — appositional]
ἐπὶ πάντα λεγόμενον Θεὸν ἢ σέβασμα,
ὥστε αὐτὸν εἰς τὸν ναὸν τοῦ Θεοῦ καθίσαι, [result acc.-inf.]
ἀποδεικνύντα ἑαυτὸν ὅτι ἔστιν Θεός. [manner ptcp + content clause]

[APODOSIS UNEXPRESSED — ἐὰν μή clause has no explicit main verb;
KJV supplies "[that day shall not come]" as the elided result]

Key structural facts:

  1. ὅτι grounds the prohibition of v.3a. The ὅτι-clause is not a new sentence — it is the reason-clause for "let no one deceive you." Paraphrase: "Don't be deceived, because the Day cannot have come yet — unless X and Y have first occurred."
  2. ἐὰν μή = "unless / except." This is a third-class conditional-negation. In classical/NT Greek, ἐὰν μή + subjunctive marks an exception/precondition to an unstated expected event.
  3. πρῶτον ("first") is temporal: it orders the apostasy and revelation before the implied event (the Day of the Lord / the deception's content). πρῶτον is an adverbial accusative (neuter of πρῶτος) modifying ἔλθῃ.
  4. Two coordinated aorist subjunctives under one ἐὰν μή: ἔλθῃ ("come") and ἀποκαλυφθῇ ("be revealed") — both must occur before the day-of-the-Lord can be asserted present.
  5. Apodosis elision (anacoluthon). Paul's sentence breaks off: he states the two preconditions (v.3) and the expansive description of the figure (v.4), never returning to finish "then [will come] / [will you know]." The unexpressed apodosis is supplied contextually from v.2 ἐνέστηκεν (the Day has not yet set in).
  6. v.4 participial chain is a nominative-case expansion of ὁ ἄνθρωπος τῆς ἀνομίας in v.3, unbroken by any new finite verb. Two articular pres.mid./pass. participles (ἀντικείμενος, ὑπεραιρόμενος) are linked by καί and governed by the preposition ἐπί + accusatives. ὥστε + acc.-inf. introduces the result-climax (sitting in the temple); ἀποδεικνύντα is a circumstantial participle-of-manner.

v.5 — rhetorical parenthesis

Simple rhetorical question interrupting the exposition: Οὐ μνημονεύετε ὅτι … ἔλεγον; The ὅτι is the content-ὅτι of μνημονεύετε. This verse suspends the argument to invoke prior teaching.

v.6-7 — the "restrainer" paragraph

v.6 καὶ νῦν τὸ κατέχον οἴδατε, [main: perf.ind. stative]
εἰς τὸ ἀποκαλυφθῆναι αὐτὸν ἐν τῷ αὐτοῦ καιρῷ. [purpose articular inf.]

v.7 τὸ γὰρ μυστήριον ἤδη ἐνεργεῖται τῆς ἀνομίας· [γάρ grounds the-restrainer logic]
μόνον ὁ κατέχων ἄρτι [elliptical — verb elided]
ἕως ἐκ μέσου γένηται. [temporal ἕως + aor.mid.subj.]

Key structural facts: - Gender shift: v.6 τὸ κατέχον (neuter) ↔ v.7 ὁ κατέχων (masculine). Same verb κατέχω in the present active participle, but in v.6 it is neuter-substantival ("the restraining thing"), in v.7 masculine-substantival ("the restraining one/person"). - Purpose clause v.6b εἰς τὸ ἀποκαλυφθῆναι αὐτόν = "with the result/purpose that he might be revealed in his own time" — the aor.pass.inf. ἀποκαλυφθῆναι is the same lexeme as v.3 ἀποκαλυφθῇ and v.8 ἀποκαλυφθήσεται. - v.7 ellipsis: only the ptcp ὁ κατέχων + adv. ἄρτι + ἕως-clause. Most reconstructions supply "[does so / restrains]" with KJV's "will let." The ἕως-clause has aor.mid.subj. γένηται + ἐκ μέσου (idiomatic "come out of the midst / be removed"). - γάρ in v.7 grounds v.6: "For the mystery already works; [the restrainer holds it back] only until he comes out of the midst."

v.8 — the revelation-and-destruction panel (the climactic future-indicative cluster)

καὶ τότε [temporal anchor "and then"]
  ἀποκαλυφθήσεται ὁ ἄνομος, [fut.pass.ind. — main clause 1]
    ὃν ὁ Κύριος Ἰησοῦς
ἀνελεῖ τῷ πνεύματι τοῦ στόματος αὐτοῦ [fut.act.ind. — relative clause 1]
    καὶ
καταργήσει τῇ ἐπιφανείᾳ τῆς παρουσίας αὐτοῦ, [fut.act.ind. — relative clause 2]

Three future indicatives — one passive (revelation) and two active (destruction) — coordinated by ὅν-relative and καί. Two dative-of-means phrases specify the two instruments of destruction, each with an attributive possessive genitive (τοῦ στόματος αὐτοῦ ‖ τῆς παρουσίας αὐτοῦ).

v.9-12 — description of the false-παρουσία and judicial consequence

v.9 οὗ ἐστιν ἡ παρουσία [rel.pron. gen. + pres.ind. — main]
κατ' ἐνέργειαν τοῦ Σατανᾶ [agentive: Satan is source]
ἐν πάσῃ δυνάμει καὶ σημείοις καὶ τέρασιν ψεύδους [triple instr.]

v.10 καὶ ἐν πάσῃ ἀπάτῃ ἀδικίας [continuation of the ἐν-string]
τοῖς ἀπολλυμένοις, [dat. of personal disadvantage — "for those perishing"]
ἀνθ' ὧν ← "because, in return for which"
τὴν ἀγάπην τῆς ἀληθείας οὐκ ἐδέξαντο [aor.ind. — ground/reason]
εἰς τὸ σωθῆναι αὐτούς. [purpose articular inf. — "so as to be saved"]

v.11 καὶ διὰ τοῦτο [inferential — "and because of this"]
πέμπει αὐτοῖς ὁ Θεὸς ἐνέργειαν πλάνης [pres.ind.]
εἰς τὸ πιστεῦσαι αὐτοὺς τῷ ψεύδει, [result articular inf.]

v.12 ἵνα κριθῶσιν πάντες οἱ μὴ πιστεύσαντες τῇ ἀληθείᾳ [purpose/result aor.pass.subj.]
ἀλλὰ εὐδοκήσαντες τῇ ἀδικίᾳ. [adversative participle pair]

Logical flow: the false-παρουσία operates by Satanic ἐνέργεια (v.9) → in/with every deceit among the perishing (v.10a) → because they did not receive the truth-love (v.10b) → therefore God sends an ἐνέργεια of delusion (v.11) → so that (ἵνα) all the non-believers/pleasure-takers-in-unrighteousness are judged (v.12).

5. The Five Titles of the Figure

The pericope assigns five distinct noun/noun-phrase titles to one referent, cross-linked by anaphoric articles and relative pronouns. All five refer to the same individual/entity:

# Greek Verse Morph Lemma(s) Strong's Literal gloss
1 ὁ ἄνθρωπος τῆς ἀνομίας 2:3 T-NSM + N-NSM + T-GSF + N-GSF ἄνθρωπος + ἀνομία G444 + G458 "the man of the lawlessness"
2 ὁ υἱὸς τῆς ἀπωλείας 2:3 T-NSM + N-NSM + T-GSF + N-GSF υἱός + ἀπώλεια G5207 + G684 "the son of the perdition/destruction"
3 ὁ ἀντικείμενος καὶ ὑπεραιρόμενος 2:4 T-NSM + V-PNP-NSM + Conj + V-PPP-NSM ἀντίκειμαι + ὑπεραίρω G480 + G5229 "the one opposing and exalting-himself"
4 ὁ ἄνομος 2:8 T-NSM + A-NSM substantival ἄνομος G459 "the lawless one"
5 οὗ … ἡ παρουσία 2:9 R-GSM + T-NSF + N-NSF ὅς + παρουσία G3739 + G3952 "of-whom … the coming/advent"

Structural observations:

  • Titles 1 and 2 are coordinated by apposition in v.3 — no conjunction between them; both are nominative-case headed by the article ὁ, linked to the same subject by juxtaposition. Both use the attributive genitive of quality (τῆς ἀνομίας / τῆς ἀπωλείας) — a Semitic-style "bene-construction" (bĕn + noun → "son of X = characterized by X"; cf. Heb. בֶּן־בְּלִיַּעַל "son of worthlessness").
  • Title 3 (v.4) is a two-participle phrase in apposition to titles 1-2. The article ὁ + two coordinated present participles (ἀντικείμενος καί ὑπεραιρόμενος) form a compound substantival — "the opposer-and-self-exalter." This is the only title using middle/passive participial form rather than noun + genitive.
  • Title 4 (v.8) is a substantival adjective — ὁ ἄνομος — the cognate adjective of the noun ἀνομία in title 1. The identification is morphologically explicit: v.3 ἀνομία (noun) → v.8 ἄνομος (adj.). The KJV "that Wicked" translates the articular ὁ ἄνομος.
  • Title 5 (v.9) is a relative-clause headed circumlocution — the figure is referred to by the genitive-relative οὗ ("of-whom") attached to the subject ἡ παρουσία. This title is ambiguous-of-antecedent by grammar alone: οὗ agrees with ὁ ἄνομος (v.8) by grammatical gender/number (both masc. sg.), so the most natural grammatical antecedent is the lawless-one. But because παρουσία is the very noun used in v.1 and v.8 for Christ's παρουσία, the lexical collision is deliberate: there are two παρουσίαι in the pericope — Christ's (v.1, v.8) and the opponent's (v.9), using the identical noun.

Word studies linked: - G444-anthropos — ἄνθρωπος - G458-anomia — ἀνομία - G459-anomos — ἄνομος (cognate adjective) - G5207-huios — υἱός - G684-apoleia — ἀπώλεια - G480-antikeimai — ἀντίκειμαι - G5229-hyperairo — ὑπεραίρω - G3952-parousia — παρουσία

6. The Temporal-Modal Chain

The pericope contains an explicit four-stage temporal sequence anchored by present/aorist/future verb forms:

Stage Greek Verse Morph Temporal marker Referent
1. Already-in-operation τὸ γὰρ μυστήριον ἤδη ἐνεργεῖται τῆς ἀνομίας 2:7 V-PMI-3S ἤδη ("already") The lawlessness-mystery is presently at work
2. Removal of the restrainer ἕως ἐκ μέσου γένηται 2:7 V-2ADS-3S ἕως ("until") The restrainer (ὁ κατέχων) comes to be out-of-the-midst
3. Revelation of the lawless one καὶ τότε ἀποκαλυφθήσεται ὁ ἄνομος 2:8 V-FPI-3S καὶ τότε ("and then") The lawless one is unveiled (fut. pass.)
4. Destruction ὃν ὁ Κύριος Ἰησοῦς ἀνελεῖ τῷ πνεύματι τοῦ στόματος αὐτοῦ καὶ καταργήσει τῇ ἐπιφανείᾳ τῆς παρουσίας αὐτοῦ 2:8 V-2FAI-3S + V-FAI-3S (simultaneous/culminating) The Lord Jesus destroys by two instruments

Tense-aspect analysis of the chain

  • Stage 1 present middle ἐνεργεῖται — progressive/durative aspect, already and ongoing now. The middle voice frames the mystery as self-acting/self-energizing (not as externally operated).
  • Stage 2 aorist subjunctive γένηται — punctiliar/perfective; the removal is viewed as a single bounded event. ἕως + aor.subj. = "until [the bounded event happens]."
  • Stage 3 future passive indicative ἀποκαλυφθήσεται — punctiliar future; the revelation is a single future event. Passive voice: the agent is unexpressed (candidate divine passive — see divine-passive).
  • Stage 4 two future active indicatives ἀνελεῖ (2nd future of ἀναιρέω) + καταργήσει — both punctiliar/perfective future, both active with ὁ Κύριος Ἰησοῦς as expressed subject. Two dative-of-means datives describe two distinct instruments of destruction:
  • τῷ πνεύματι τοῦ στόματος αὐτοῦ ("by the breath/spirit of his mouth") — possessive gen. τοῦ στόματος; the phrase echoes Isa 11:4 LXX (πνεύματι διὰ χειλέων ἀνελεῖ ἀσεβῆ).
  • τῇ ἐπιφανείᾳ τῆς παρουσίας αὐτοῦ ("by the appearing/radiance of his coming") — gen. of source; ἐπιφάνεια (G2015) is the visible-manifestation noun; παρουσία (G3952) is the advent-noun.

Verbal inclusio of ἀποκαλύπτω (G601)

The verb ἀποκαλύπτω ("unveil, reveal") appears three times in the pericope, in three different morphological forms, marking three different modal stances:

# Form Morph Verse Modality
1 ἀποκαλυφθῇ V-APS-3S (Aor Pass Subj) 2:3 Irrealis/prospective within conditional
2 ἀποκαλυφθῆναι V-APN (Aor Pass Inf) 2:6 Purpose/result (articular inf.)
3 ἀποκαλυφθήσεται V-FPI-3S (Fut Pass Ind) 2:8 Realis/predictive

All three forms are aorist-stem passive (punctiliar "be-unveiled"); all three have the lawless one as grammatical subject. The progression Subj → Inf → Fut.Ind. mirrors the modal progression contingent → purposed → predicted — the same event-lexeme viewed under three grammatical stances matched to the three rhetorical stages (preconditional hypothesis, restrainer-purpose, climactic announcement). See G601-apokalypto and aorist-passive-indicative.

Verbal inclusio of ἐνέργεια / ἐνεργέω (G1753 / G1754)

The root ἐνεργ- appears three times in the pericope with three different subjects:

# Form Morph Verse Subject
1 ἐνεργεῖται V-PMI-3S 2:7 τὸ μυστήριον τῆς ἀνομίας
2 ἐνέργειαν (τοῦ Σατανᾶ) N-ASF 2:9 Satan (subjective gen.)
3 ἐνέργειαν (πλάνης) N-ASF 2:11 ὁ Θεός (the sender, with πλάνης as attributive)

Same verb-family; three agents (the mystery / Satan / God). See G1754-energeo, G1753-energeia.
