WG: Grace¶
Overview¶
The NT grace concept clusters around χάρις (cháris) and its cognates, all from the root χαίρω (chairo, "rejoice"). The group spans the divine attribute (charis), specific gifts granted (charisma), the act of freely giving/forgiving (charizomai), the emotional response it produces (chara = joy), and the two great relational fruits that accompany it in epistolary formulas (peace: eirēnē; faith: pistis).

Hebrew Bridge¶
Both G5485 (cháris) and G1515 (eirēnē) draw on Hebrew backgrounds: - G5485 ← H2580 ḥēn (grace/favor) — see TR-hen-charis.md - G1515 ← H7965 shalom (peace/wholeness) - The "grace and peace" formula binds two LXX loan-concepts into the signature NT greeting
Roles in the Concept¶
- Source: χάρις (cháris) — the divine attribute; God's freely-given, unmerited favor
- Distribution: χάρισμα (chárisma) — specific gifts grace grants (spiritual gifts, deliverance)
- Action: χαρίζομαι (charízomai) — grace enacted as forgiveness or free giving
- Response: χαρά (chará) — joy produced by receiving grace
- Fruit 1: εἰρήνη (eirēnē) — peace; the relational wholeness that grace restores
- Instrument: πίστις (pístis) — faith; how grace is received ("by grace through faith")
