Grammar Analysis: Isaiah 14:12–15 and Ezekiel 28:2–9 — Self-Deification Template

Scope. Two OT oracles against earthly rulers (the king of Babylon; the prince/nagid of Tyre) whose shared Hebrew lexicon and syntax form the most developed "I-will-be-God" / "I-sit-in-God's-seat" template in the Hebrew Bible. Both passages are parsed below word-by-word from ETCBC/BHSA via hebrew_parser.py. The analysis catalogs the grammatical features — not the referents. Application (earthly king, Satan, eschatological figure, typological layering) is interpretive and left to studies that cite this file.

Part 1 — Isaiah 14:12–15

Text

KJV (v. 12): How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! [how] art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations!

KJV (v. 13): For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north:

KJV (v. 14): I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High.

KJV (v. 15): Yet thou shalt be brought down to hell, to the sides of the pit.

2 exalt אָרִים רום Hiphil Impf 1cs "I will cause (my throne) to be high"
3 sit אֵשֵׁב ישׁב Qal Impf 1cs "I will sit/enthrone"
4 ascend (again) אֶעֱלֶה עלה Qal Impf 1cs "I will go up"
5 make-self-like אֶדַּמֶּה דמה Hithpael Impf 1cs "I will make myself resemble"

All five are 1cs imperfect (first-person singular yiqtol). The sequence escalates stem-by-stem: Qal (simple action) → Hiphil (causative: "cause my throne high") → Qal → Qal → Hithpael (reflexive/reciprocal — the peak of the sequence expresses self-initiated self-likening).

Part 2 — Ezekiel 28:2–9

Text

Hebrew (v. 2, the core claim):

KJV (v. 2): Son of man, say unto the prince of Tyrus, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Because thine heart [is] lifted up, and thou hast said, I [am] a God, I sit [in] the seat of God, in the midst of the seas; yet thou [art] a man, and not God, though thou set thine heart as the heart of God:

KJV (v. 3): Behold, thou [art] wiser than Daniel; there is no secret that they can hide from thee:

KJV (v. 4): With thy wisdom and with thine understanding thou hast gotten thee riches, and hast gotten gold and silver into thy treasures:

KJV (v. 5): By thy great wisdom [and] by thy traffick hast thou increased thy riches, and thine heart is lifted up because of thy riches:

KJV (v. 6): Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD; Because thou hast set thine heart as the heart of God;

KJV (v. 7): Behold, therefore I will bring strangers upon thee, the terrible of the nations: and they shall draw their swords against the beauty of thy wisdom, and they shall defile thy brightness.

KJV (v. 8): They shall bring thee down to the pit, and thou shalt die the deaths of [them that are] slain in the midst of the seas.

KJV (v. 9): Wilt thou yet say before him that slayeth thee, I [am] God? but thou [shalt be] a man, and no God, in the hand of him that slayeth thee.

Key Grammatical Features (cross-passage)

1. The Verbless Nominal Clause: אֵל אָנִי / אֱלֹהִים אָנִי

  • Form: Predicate-Subject verbless clause (type NmCl in ETCBC). No copula. Word order is predicate-first (PreC + Subj), which is the emphatic/classifying order in Biblical Hebrew (cf. Ezek 28:2 clause 6; 28:9 clause 2).
  • Function: Ascribes a class or essence. "I (am) God" — not a statement of location or activity but of identity. Parallel to Exod 3:14's divine self-identification structure (though there the pronoun is first: אָנֹכִי אָנֹכִי... אֱהְיֶה).
  • Significance: The predicate-fronting (אֵל / אֱלֹהִים preceding אָנִי) throws the weight on the divine title, not the speaker — grammatically equivalent to saying "God — that's what I am." The same structure recurs in YHWH's own self-declarations (e.g., "I am YHWH" אֲנִי יְהוָה with subject-predicate order; here the order is reversed, placing the divine title in the emphatic slot).
  • Ezek 28 rhetorical frame: The verbless clause is bracketed by its negation in the same verse (v. 2: וְאַתָּה אָדָם וְלֹא־אֵל; v. 9: וְאַתָּה אָדָם וְלֹא־אֵל). YHWH does not merely contradict the claim; He uses the same verbless syntax to state the counter-proposition ("man — and not God"). The rebuttal mirrors the arrogation word-for-word.

2. First-Person Imperfect (Yiqtol 1cs) as Resolve / Intention

  • Isa 14:13–14 sequence: אֶעֱלֶה (עלה), אָרִים (רום Hiphil), אֵשֵׁב (ישׁב), אֶעֱלֶה (עלה), אֶדַּמֶּה (דמה Hithpael) — five 1cs imperfects.
  • Form: Qal/Hiphil/Hithpael imperfect, first singular. In direct speech embedded under אָמַרְתָּ בִלְבָבְךָ ("you said in your heart"), the 1cs yiqtol functions as volitional / resolve — near cohortative in force (though classical cohortative would add final -ָה suffix, which is absent here).
  • Significance: Grammar is neutral — these forms can be predictive ("I will...") or volitional ("I intend to..."). Embedded in inner monologue (בִלְבָבְךָ), the volitional reading is grammatically dominant: a resolution formed in the heart. The sequence is not a prediction but a program of self-exaltation.
  • Stem escalation: Qal → Hiphil (causative) → Qal → Qal → Hithpael (reflexive). The climax is the Hithpael אֶדַּמֶּה ("I will make myself be like") — a grammatical form that is self-referential by stem, matching the semantic peak of the speech.

3. Qatal of Inward State: גָּבַהּ לִבְּךָ and אָמַרְתָּ בִלְבָבְךָ

  • Form: גָּבַהּ is Qal perfect 3ms ("is/has been high"); the subject is לִבְּךָ ("your heart"). The qatal here expresses a stative/resultant state — "your heart has-become/is lifted up." Parallel in Ezek 28:5 (וַיִּגְבַּהּ לְבָבְךָ — wayyiqtol continuing the climb).
  • Isa 14:13 uses אָמַרְתָּ (Qal perf 2ms) + בִלְבָבְךָ with a WXQt clause type (waw + subject-pronoun + qatal; see syntax-wx-qatal-circumstantial). The pronoun אַתָּה is expressed — grammatically redundant since 2ms is in the verb — marking emphatic contrast ("as for you, you said...").
  • Significance: Both oracles locate the offense in the heart (לֵב / לֵבָב), and both verbalize the heart's posture with qatal (completed/resultant). The grammar frames the sin as a settled inner state, not a momentary slip.

4. יַעַן + Qatal / InfCon: Causal-Indictment Clauses

  • Ezek 28:2: יַעַן גָּבַהּ לִבְּךָ — "because your heart has-been-high" (יַעַן + qatal).
  • Ezek 28:6: יַעַן תִּתְּךָ אֶת־לְבָבְךָ — "because of your giving your heart..." (יַעַן + infinitive construct with 2ms suffix as subject of the infinitive).
  • Form: יַעַן is morphologically a construct noun ("motive/cause") functioning as a causal particle. It takes either a finite qatal clause (v. 2) or an infinitive construct with pronominal subject (v. 6).
  • Significance: יַעַן is the indictment marker in Ezekielian judgment oracles — it introduces the legal ground on which the verdict (introduced by לָכֵן, "therefore," vv. 6, 7) rests. The two יַעַן clauses (vv. 2, 6) flank vv. 3–5 as a frame, and the two לָכֵן clauses (vv. 6, 7) introduce the verdict and the sentence respectively.
  • Clause-logic skeleton of vv. 2–10:
  • יַעַן (v. 2) — charge restated: "you said אֵל אָנִי, etc."
  • Evidence (vv. 3–5): wisdom, wealth, lifted heart
  • יַעַן (v. 6) — charge re-restated: "you set your heart as God's heart"
  • לָכֵן (v. 7) — sentence: "I am bringing strangers"
  • Consequence (vv. 7b–8): swords, defilement, pit, death
  • Rhetorical coup de grâce (v. 9): הֶאָמֹר תֹּאמַר... — "will you still say 'God I (am)'?"

5. Construct Chains of Divine Reference

The passages cluster construct chains that pair divine vocabulary with topographical/political terms — the grammatical form that underwrites the arrogation:

Chain Parsing Gloss Reference
כּוֹכְבֵי־אֵל Noun.mp.Cst + Noun.ms.Abs "stars of God/El" Isa 14:13
הַר־מוֹעֵד Noun.ms.Cst + Noun.ms.Abs "mount of assembly" Isa 14:13
יַרְכְּתֵי צָפוֹן Noun.fd.Cst + PropN "recesses of Zaphon/north" Isa 14:13
בָּמֳתֵי עָב Noun.fp.Cst + Noun.s.Abs "heights of cloud" Isa 14:14
יַרְכְּתֵי־בוֹר Noun.fd.Cst + Noun.ms.Abs "recesses of the pit" Isa 14:15
מוֹשַׁב אֱלֹהִים Noun.ms.Cst + Noun.mp.Abs "seat of God" Ezek 28:2
בְּלֵב יַמִּים Noun.ms.Cst + Noun.mp.Abs "in the heart of seas" Ezek 28:2, 8
לֵב אֱלֹהִים Noun.ms.Cst + Noun.mp.Abs "heart of God" Ezek 28:2, 6

The two poetic inclusios are striking: - Isa 14: יַרְכְּתֵי צָפוֹן (the mythic summit) → יַרְכְּתֵי בוֹר (the pit). Same construct head יַרְכְּתֵי ("remote parts of"), opposite objects. The grammar executes a chiasm: highest-high → lowest-low. - Ezek 28: בְּלֵב יַמִּים (the enthronement claim, v. 2) → בְּלֵב יַמִּים (the death venue, v. 8). Identical phrase. The place of claimed deity becomes the place of death.

6. Passive Reversal: Hophal and Hiphil + 2ms Suffix

The judgment in both passages uses passive morphology to signal who does the acting — not the speaker, but external agents (including YHWH).

Passage Verb Parsing Gloss
Isa 14:12 נִגְדַּעְתָּ Niphal Perf 2ms "you are cut off"
Isa 14:15 תּוּרָד Hophal Impf 2ms "you will be brought down"
Ezek 28:8 יוֹרִדוּךָ Hiphil Impf 3mp + 2ms suff. "they will bring you down"

The Hophal (passive of Hiphil) of ירד ("go down") at Isa 14:15 is the grammatical inversion of Isa 14:13–14's five active-voice ascent verbs. The self-elevator becomes the passively-lowered. Ezek 28:8 achieves the same semantic result with Hiphil + object suffix — the agents are the זָרִים ("strangers") of v. 7; the grammatical patient is the prince of Tyre.

For the Niphal generally, see stem-niphal.

7. Wayyiqtol of Self-Accusation (Ezek 28:2)

  • Two wayyiqtol forms in v. 2b: וַתֹּאמֶר (2ms) and וַתִּתֵּן (2ms).
  • Form: Wayyiqtol normally drives narrative sequence (3ms/3mp most common). Here both are 2ms, turning the prophetic oracle into a rehearsal of the addressee's own actions: "and you said... and you set...".
  • Significance: Grammatically, YHWH is narrating back to the prince what the prince has done. The wayyiqtol chain reconstructs the offense as historical fact under the messenger formula כֹּה אָמַר אֲדֹנָי יְהוִה. The charge is framed not as allegation but as recorded event.

8. Infinitive Absolute + Finite Verb (Ezek 28:9): Emphatic Interrogation

  • הֶאָמֹר תֹּאמַר — He-interrogative + Qal InfAbs (אָמֹר) + Qal Impf 2ms (תֹּאמַר).
  • Form: The infinitive absolute before a cognate finite verb is the classical Hebrew construction for emphasis/intensity ("will you really / still say...?"). The he-interrogative prefix (הֶ-) adds an incredulity question.
  • Significance: The grammar is maximally loaded: interrogative + InfAbs + Impf = "will-you-indeed-say?" — a rhetorical construction expecting a negative answer. It is the mirror of v. 2's arrogation: the prince said "אֵל אָנִי" with a nominal clause; YHWH asks whether he will still say "אֱלֹהִים אָנִי" (same verbless clause type) while in the hand of his slayer. Grammatically matched, theologically decisive.

9. Participles of the Adversaries (Ezek 28:9)

  • הֹרְגֶךָ — Qal participle mp + 2ms suffix: "the ones killing you."
  • מְחַלְלֶיךָ — Piel participle mp + 2ms suffix: "the ones profaning you."
  • Significance: Two substantive participles with identical suffixation, framing the prince in the passive role of object. The Piel חלל ("profane") is the same root as חָלָל ("slain/pierced" adjective in v. 8) — the grammar binds the death-scene to the action of the slayers.

Shared structural logic (grammar-driven): 1. Claim (qatal/yiqtol in 1cs) — the inner speech of self-elevation. 2. Indictment (יַעַן + qatal/infcon) — the charge restated by YHWH. 3. Verdict (לָכֵן / אַךְ + finite verb) — the turn. 4. Sentence (passive or hostile-agent verbs of descent/death) — grammar reverses subject and patient. 5. Coup (verbless rebuttal) — same syntactic frame as the claim, inverted content.

The two passages share every major lexeme of the template: ישׁב (sit), רום/גבה (exalt/be-high), לֵב (heart), אֱלֹהִים / אֵל / עֶלְיוֹן (God-titles), מוֹשַׁב / כִּסֵּא (seat/throne), ירד (brought down). Ezek 28:2 is the only OT verse with the explicit verbless formula אֵל אָנִי; Isa 14:14 is the only OT verse with the Hithpael אֶדַּמֶּה לְעֶלְיוֹן. The two oracles thus supply, between them, the full grammatical vocabulary of arrogated deity.

2 Thess 2:4 Grammatical Correspondences (reference only)

The Greek of 2 Thess 2:4 (καθίσαι εἰς τὸν ναὸν τοῦ Θεοῦ ἀποδεικνύντα ἑαυτὸν ὅτι ἐστὶν Θεός) uses three verbs whose LXX/Hebrew counterparts recur in this template:

Greek (2 Thess 2:4) Hebrew counterpart (this template) Morphological match
καθίσαι (aor. inf. of καθίζω, "sit") ישׁב — Isa 14:13 אֵשֵׁב; Ezek 28:2 יָשַׁבְתִּי Both roots = "enthrone oneself"
ὑπεραιρόμενος (pres. ptcp. of ὑπεραίρω, "exalt oneself over") רום Hiphil — Isa 14:13 אָרִים; cf. גבה Qal Ezek 28:2, 5 Hiphil "cause-to-be-high" ‖ ὑπέρ-compound
ἀποδεικνύντα ἑαυτὸν ὅτι ἐστὶν Θεός ("displaying himself that he is God") NmCl אֵל אָנִי / אֱלֹהִים אָנִי (Ezek 28:2, 9) Verbless predicate-first claim of divine identity

For the Greek side of these constructions see the grammar-reference entries listed below. This file documents the Hebrew side; no claim is made here about which (if any) figure either passage primarily refers to.

Notes for Studies Citing This File

  • The grammatical data is referent-agnostic. Whether either passage (a) addresses only its named earthly ruler, (b) typologically includes Satan as the primal self-exalter, (c) points forward to a final antichristian figure, or (d) any combination — these readings are all compatible with the parsing above, and the choice belongs to exegesis/theology, not grammar.
  • The strongest grammatical link to 2 Thess 2:4 is the verbless predicate-first nominal clause אֵל אָנִי / אֱלֹהִים אָנִי of Ezek 28:2, 9 — it is the Hebrew construction closest in structure to "ὅτι ἐστὶν Θεός" (ὅτι-clause predicate with fronted divine title).
  • The strongest lexical link is ישׁב (Qal) / καθίζω: both passages enthrone the claimant; 2 Thess 2:4 has the claimant sit in the temple.
  • The strongest rhetorical link is the doubled pattern of claim → indictment → reversal, which the Ezekielian יַעַן...לָכֵן structure exhibits with maximum grammatical clarity.
