TR: shâmayim → ouranos (Heaven / Sky / Divine Dwelling)¶
The Chain¶
Hebrew OT LXX (Greek OT) Greek NT
──────────── ─────────────── ────────────
שָׁמַיִם (shâmayim) → οὐρανός (ouranos) → οὐρανός (ouranos)
H8064, 395v OT 383 renderings as LXX 264v NT
"heaven(s), sky" equivalent (PMI 33.48) "heaven(s), sky"
This is one of the strongest and most semantically stable Hebrew-to-Greek bridges in the Bible. Of 439 tokens of shâmayim in the Hebrew OT, ouranos is the LXX rendering in the overwhelming majority of verses, and ouranos then carries the full semantic range directly into the NT.
OT Usage (Hebrew)¶
| Strong's | Word | Occurrences | Primary Meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
| H8064 | שָׁמַיִם (shâmayim) | 395 | heaven(s), sky, firmament, divine dwelling (grammatically dual) |

Key OT passages: - Gen 1:1 — "In the beginning God created hashshâmayim and the earth" (merism for creation) - Deut 10:14 — "the heaven and the heaven of heavens is the LORD'S" (transcendence) - Ps 19:1 — "The heavens declare the glory of God" (personified revelation) - Isa 66:1 — "Heaven is my throne" (divine dwelling) - Dan 8:8, 10 — "four winds of heaven"; "host of heaven" cast down (eschatological)
LXX Bridge¶

|---|---|---|---|---|
| shâmayim (H8064) | οὐρανός (G3772) | 383 | 33.48 | Dominant one-to-one equivalent across all semantic categories |
| shâmayim (H8064) | πετεινόν (G4071) | 38 | 17.76 | Within fixed idiom ʿôph hashshâmayim = "birds of the air" |
| shâmayim (H8064) | ἄστρον (G798) | 12 | 12.64 | In tsᵉbāʾ hashshâmayim "host of heaven" contexts |

| shâmayin (H8065) Aram. | οὐρανός (G3772) | 34 | 19.93 | Same equivalent for the Aramaic cognate |
Reverse view — what other Hebrew words also go to οὐρανός:
| Hebrew | Strong's | Co-occ with G3772 | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| shâmayim | H8064 | 383 | primary |
| shâmayin (Aram.) | H8065 | 34 | Aramaic cognate |
| ʻôph (fowl) | H5775 | 41 | via "fowl of the heavens" |
| kôwkâb (star) | H3556 | 18 | via "stars of heaven" contexts |
| shachaq (sky/cloud) | H7834 | 11 | poetic "skies" |
| ʾerets (earth) | H776 | 192 | co-occurrence only — the merism partner, not a translation |
| mâṭar (rain) | H4306 | 13 | via "rain from heaven" |
Semantic continuity: All three senses you flagged — (a) atmospheric sky, (b) celestial realm of stars, (c) divine dwelling — survive the Greek translation without shift. Greek ouranos already carried the same triple range in classical usage, so LXX translators did not need to compensate with a second term.

Continuity and Shifts¶
What stays the same across testaments: - Triple semantic range (atmosphere / celestial realm / divine dwelling) is preserved intact. - Merism "heaven and earth" survives as the standard totality idiom (γῆ καὶ οὐρανός). - "Host of heaven" (tsᵉbāʾ hashshâmayim → στρατιὰ τοῦ οὐρανοῦ, Acts 7:42; Luke 2:13 uses στρατιὰς οὐρανίου). - "Stars of heaven" / "fowl of the heaven" / "God of heaven" idioms all carry over.
What shifts: - Dual → singular/plural fluidity. Hebrew shâmayim is grammatically dual-only. Greek ouranos allows singular and plural, and the NT freely uses both. Matthew uses the plural οὐρανοί systematically (esp. "kingdom of heaven"), likely reflecting Semitic sensibility. Other NT writers prefer singular. - "Heaven" as divine circumlocution. In Second Temple Judaism (already visible in Dan 4:26 "heaven does rule" and 1 Macc), "heaven" began to stand in for God. Matthew's βασιλεία τῶν οὐρανῶν extends this; Luke writes "I have sinned against heaven" (15:18, 21). Hebrew OT does not use shâmayim this way. - "Third heaven" / heavenly places. NT develops a stratified cosmology (2 Cor 12:2; Eph 1:3, 20; 2:6; 3:10; 6:12 use ἐπουράνιος / ἐν τοῖς ἐπουρανίοις). The Hebrew "heaven of heavens" (Deut 10:14; 1 Kgs 8:27) is the seed, but the NT multiplies levels. - Eschatological intensification. "New heavens and new earth" is a prophetic trajectory (Isa 65:17) but becomes a dominant NT horizon (2 Pet 3; Rev 21). - Aramaic bridge. Dan 2–7 uses H8065 shâmayin (Aramaic), and Dan 4:26 "heaven rules" seeds the later Jewish/NT use of "heaven" for God.
