WG: White (NT Color Vocabulary)¶
Overview¶
The NT uses a small set of color adjectives. λευκός (leukós, white) is the most frequent NT color term (23 vv), overwhelmingly concentrated in Revelation. This group maps white alongside its cognate, its nearest confused word, and the key color contrasts used in NT apocalyptic imagery.

Relationships¶
Shared Roots¶
- G3022 λευκός and G3021 λευκαίνω share the same root (λύκη, lykē — light); leukós is the adjective, leukaínō the verb
Etymology Note¶
- λευκός derives from λύκη ("light") — white as "light-colored." This explains the Louw-Nida dual placement in Color (079.007) AND Light (014.006) domains.
- λαμπρός derives from λάμπω (lampō, "to shine") — radiance/brilliance. The two words overlap when applied to heavenly garments but are semantically distinct.
Co-occurrence (appear in same verses)¶
| Word A | Word B | Shared Verses | Typical Context |
|---|---|---|---|
| G3022 leukós | G3189 mélas | 1 | Matt 5:36 — "one hair white or black" (direct antonym pair) |
| G3022 leukós | G3021 leukaínō | 1 | Mark 9:3 — "white...so as no fuller can white them" (adj + verb together) |
Revelation Color Contrast Cluster¶
In Revelation, colors are used symbolically as contrasting emblems:
| Color | Word | Verses in Rev | Association |
|---|---|---|---|
| White | λευκός (G3022) | 14 | Christ, the redeemed, divine throne/horse |
| Scarlet | κόκκινος (G2847) | ~5 | Beast, Babylon the harlot |
| Red/fiery | πυρρός (G4450) | 2 | Second horseman (war), great dragon |
| Black | μέλας (G3189) | 1 | Third horseman (famine, Rev 6:5) |
Roles in the Concept¶
- Core color term: λευκός — the primary NT word for white (23 vv)
- Verbal cognate: λευκαίνω — the act of making/becoming white (Mark 9:3; Rev 7:14)
- Luminous overlap: λαμπρός — "bright/shining" (sometimes translated "white" for heavenly garments in Rev 15:6; 19:8)
- Primary contrast: μέλας — black, the opposite of white (Matt 5:36)
- Apocalyptic contrast: κόκκινος (scarlet) and πυρρός (fiery red) — the colors of the opposing powers in Revelation
Key Passages Where Multiple Group Words Appear¶
- Matt 5:36 — λευκός + μέλας ("white or black") — the only NT verse pairing these antonyms
- Mark 9:3 — λευκός + λευκαίνω together in the Transfiguration: "exceeding white...so as no fuller on earth can white them"
- Rev 6:2–8 — The four horsemen: white (λευκός) → red (πυρρός) → black (μέλας) → pale — a deliberate color sequence
- Rev 7:14 — λευκαίνω applied to the robes of the great multitude: "made them white in the blood of the Lamb"
