WG: Remnant / Remainder

Overview

Hebrew has a rich vocabulary for "what is left over." Five words — two verb roots and three derived nouns — cover the spectrum from neutral administrative surplus to theologically charged eschatological survival. Understanding their distinctions prevents reading she'erith's covenantal weight into yether's bureaucratic formula, or flattening both into a single "remnant" concept.

Root Families

Family 1 — יתר root (excess, overhang)

  • H3498 יָתַר (yathar) — the root verb: to jut over, exceed; also to be left over, survive
  • H3499 יֶתֶר (yether) — derived noun: the overhang itself = surplus, remainder; also "cord" (something hanging free)

The root idea is spatial: what hangs or extends beyond an edge. This produces both the sense of "excess/superiority" (Gen 49:3 — "the excellency of dignity") and "remainder" (administrative "the rest of the acts of king X").

Family 2 — שׁאר root (survival, persistence)

  • H7604 שָׁאַר (sha'ar) — root verb: to swell up, persist; to remain, survive
  • H7605 שְׁאָר (she'ar) — derived noun: remainder, those remaining
  • H7611 שְׁאֵרִית (she'erith) — abstract noun: residual/surviving portion; carries the theological weight of Israel's covenantal remnant

The שׁאר root emphasizes persistence through adversity rather than excess beyond an edge. Its noun forms dominate the prophets when speaking of Israel's survival.

Roles in the Concept

Role Word Typical Context
Administrative surplus yether (H3499) "the rest of the acts of king X" — 65% of uses
Root action of remaining yathar (H3498) Narrative description of what is left after an event
Verb of survival sha'ar (H7604) "those who were left / who remained"
Surviving group she'ar (H7605) Prophetic: "the remnant of Israel," "the remnant that remains"
Covenantal remnant she'erith (H7611) The theologically weighted "remnant of Israel" in Isaiah, Jeremiah, Zephaniah

Key Distinctions

yether vs. she'erith: The easiest confusion. Both are nouns rendered "remnant/residue" in KJV. yether is the neutral word — it occurs over 60 times in the bureaucratic "rest of the acts" formula. she'erith almost never appears there; it carries the covenantal freight of divine preservation (Isa 10:20–22; Jer 23:3; Mic 2:12; Zep 3:13). Reading she'erith's theological weight into a yether occurrence is an exegetical overclaim.

yathar vs. sha'ar: Near-synonymous verbs. yathar's root is "overhang/exceed" (surplus perspective); sha'ar's root is "swell/persist" (survival perspective). In practice they are largely interchangeable for "to remain," but sha'ar's noun forms (she'ar, she'erith) dominate the prophetic remnant passages.

she'ar vs. she'erith: Both nouns from the sha'ar root. she'ar (H7605) is the simple "remainder" (25 uses); she'erith (H7611) is the more abstract "residual portion" (66 uses) and carries the explicitly covenantal sense. Jer, Ezek, and Mic use she'erith almost exclusively when referring to Israel's future survival.

Key Passages with Multiple Group Words

  • Exo 10:5 — yether (H3499) + sha'ar (H7604): "they shall eat the rest (yether) of that which is escaped, which remaineth (sha'ar) to you from the hail"
  • Isa 11:11 — sha'ar (H7604) + she'ar (H7605): "the Lord shall set his hand again the second time to recover the remnant (she'ar) of his people, which shall be left (sha'ar)"
  • Zep 2:9 — yether (H3499) + she'erith (H7611): "the residue (yether) of my people shall spoil them, and the remnant (she'erith) of my nation shall possess them" — rare collocation: the administrative/neutral word alongside the covenantal word in one eschatological oracle

Cross-Testament

The LXX's primary rendering of yether as λοιποί (G3062) carries the "remaining ones" sense into Greek. In Revelation, λοιποί occurs 8× with eschatological weight (Rev 12:17; 20:5) that echoes she'erith more than yether — a case where the Greek word, carrying both Hebrew traditions through a single Greek form, is pressed into service for the covenantal remnant concept.
