WG: Dream / Vision / Prophetic Revelation¶
Overview¶
In the Hebrew Scriptures, divine communication through sleep-state imagery (dream) and waking-state imagery (vision) forms a tightly-knit cluster paired with the human channel (the prophet). The words in this group appear together in formulaic lists, polemics against false prophets, and eschatological promises of universal revelation.

Relationships¶
Shared Roots¶
- chalom (H2472), chalam (H2492), chelem (H2493) — all from the root חלם; chelem is the Aramaic cognate of Hebrew chalom
- chazon (H2377), chizzayon (H2384) — both from חזה (chazah, to see/perceive); chazon is the stable noun, chizzayon the intensive form typically linked to "night vision"
Co-occurrence (appear in same verses)¶
| Word A | Word B | Shared Verses | Typical Context |
|---|---|---|---|
| chalom | chalam | 16x | Cognate pair: "dreamed a dream" (Gen 37:5; 40:5; 41:11; Dan 2:3) |
| chalom | nabi | 9x | Dream-channel paired or contrasted with prophet (Num 12:6; Deut 13:1–5; Jer 23, 27, 29) |
| chazon | nabi | 9x | Visions attributed to named prophets (2 Chr 32:32; Isa 1:1; Obad 1:1) |
| chalam | nabi | 5x | Verbal "dream" + prophet in false-prophet polemic (Deut 13; Jer 23) |
| chalom | chizzayon | 4x | Dream parallel with "vision of the night" (Job 7:14; 33:15; Isa 29:7; Joel 2:28) |
| chalom | chazon | 2x | Dream / vision pair (Isa 29:7; Joel 2:28 through mediating terms) |
| chizzayon | nabi | 1x | Zech 13:4 — prophets ashamed of their visions |
Multi-Word Passages (3+ members in one verse)¶
- Deut 13:1, 3, 5 — chalom + chalam + nabi — law on the false "prophet or dreamer of dreams"
- Jer 29:8 — chalom + chalam + nabi — warning against prophets, diviners, and dreamers in Babylon
- Joel 2:28 — chalom + chalam + chizzayon — "your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions" (quoted in Acts 2:17)
These three verse-clusters are the high-density center of the concept: a legal frame (Deut), a polemical frame (Jer), and an eschatological-promise frame (Joel).
LXX Overlaps (Shared Greek Targets)¶
| Greek | Hebrew Members It Renders | Note |
|---|---|---|
| ἐνύπνιον (G1798) | chalom, chelem, chalam (all 3 dream-words) | LXX consolidates the dream-family onto one term |
| ἐνυπνιάζομαι (G1797) | chalam, chalom | Verbal dream-rendering |
| προφήτης (G4396) | nabi (primary), chazon, chalom | Greek "prophet" pulls in not just the person but the revelation media associated with him |
| ὁράω (G3708) | chalam, chelem, chazon | "See" bridges Hebrew dreaming and visioning |
The LXX evidence confirms that Greek translators read dream and vision as a single perceptual field, with nabi as the human locus.
Roles in the Concept¶
- Mode — sleep: chalom (חֲלוֹם), chelem (Aramaic), chalam (verb) — revelation while asleep
- Mode — sight: chazon (חָזוֹן), chizzayon (חִזָּיוֹן) — revelation as seen image; chizzayon specifically at night, bridging to dream
- Channel: nabi (נָבִיא) — the human prophet who receives and proclaims
- Shared frame: all presuppose God as speaker/agent and require authentication (Deut 13 test; Jer 23 "word of the LORD" test)
Key Passages Where Multiple Group Words Appear Together¶
- Num 12:6 — "If there be a prophet (nabi) among you, I the LORD will make myself known unto him in a vision (mareh), and will speak unto him in a dream (chalom)" — the foundational triad
- Deut 13:1–5 — "prophet (nabi), or a dreamer of dreams (chalam + chalom)" — the test for revelation
- 1 Sam 28:6 — "neither by dreams (chalom), nor by Urim, nor by prophets (nabi)" — list of legitimate inquiry channels
- Jer 23:25–32 — extended polemic linking false prophets, false dreams, false visions
- Joel 2:28 → Acts 2:17 — "old men shall dream dreams (chalam + chalom), young men shall see visions (chizzayon)" — eschatological democratization
