WG: Service and Worship¶
Overview¶
The Hebrew concept of service-worship is expressed through a cluster of words that together cover the spectrum from manual labor to religious devotion. The anchoring verb ʻâbad (H5647) holds these senses together, while surrounding words differentiate the physical act (shâchâh), the status relationship (shârath), the activity itself (ʻăbôdâh), the generic doing (ʻâsâh), and the Aramaic equivalent (pelach).

Relationships¶
Shared Roots¶
- ʻ-b-d family: ʻâbad (H5647 verb), ʻăbôdâh (H5656 noun), ʻebed (H5650 servant) — all from the same root
- pelach (H6399): Aramaic cognate of ʻâbad, used exclusively in Daniel and Ezra
Co-occurrence (appear in same verses)¶
| Word A | Word B | Shared Verses | Typical Context |
|---|---|---|---|
| ʻâbad (H5647) | ʻâsâh (H6213) | 32v | Deuteronomic law: "serve and do" |
| ʻâbad (H5647) | shâchâh (H7812) | 31v | "bow down and serve" — paired worship hendiadys |
| ʻâbad (H5647) | ʻăbôdâh (H5656) | 29v | cognate accusative: "serve the service" |
| ʻăbôdâh (H5656) | ʻâsâh (H6213) | 32v | "do the service" — tabernacle duty formula |
| shâchâh (H7812) | ʻâsâh (H6213) | 20v | "worshipped and did after" — idolatry contexts |

| shârath (H8334) | ʻăbôdâh (H5656) | 6v | Levitical ministry |
The strongest pairing is ʻâbad + shâchâh (31 shared verses), forming the standard hendiadys for worship in prohibition contexts: "thou shalt not bow down (shâchâh) to them, nor serve (ʻâbad) them" (Exo 20:5, Deut 5:9).
LXX Overlaps¶
| Hebrew Words | Shared Greek | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| ʻâbad + shâchâh | both → προσκυνέω (G4352) | Greek conflates bowing and serving in worship contexts |
| ʻâbad + pelach | both → λατρεύω (G3000) | Greek equates Hebrew and Aramaic service verbs |
| ʻâbad + shârath | both → λειτουργέω (G3008) | Greek equates slave-service and minister-service in cultic contexts |
| ʻâbad + ʻâsâh | both → ἐργάζομαι (G2038) | Greek equates generic doing and directed labor in work contexts |
Roles in the Concept¶
- Core verb: ʻâbad (H5647) — the unified work/serve/worship concept, spanning agricultural labor through religious devotion
- Physical gesture: shâchâh (H7812) — the bodily act of prostration that accompanies or expresses the service
- Honorable attendance: shârath (H8334) — higher-status personal ministry (priests minister; slaves serve)
- The activity: ʻăbôdâh (H5656) — the service as a thing; can be positive (tabernacle service) or negative (hard bondage)
- Aramaic equivalent: pelach (H6399) — carries the ʻâbad concept into the Aramaic portions of Daniel, where the question "whom do you serve/worship?" is central
- Generic action: ʻâsâh (H6213) — supplies "do service" constructions and fills out the Deuteronomic command vocabulary
