Vision-Introduction Formulas (Greek)

Definition

A cluster of recurring Greek syntactic formulas used — chiefly in Revelation, but also in Luke-Acts and the Synoptics — to open a visionary unit, frame it in the seer's experience, and mark its content as received revelation rather than ordinary narrative. Four canonical frames:

  1. καὶ εἶδον (kai eidon) "and I saw" — V-2AAI-1S of ὁράω (G3708). ~44× in Revelation. Functions as the Greek equivalent of Hebrew Qal-wayyiqtol wā-ʾerʾeh.
  2. ἐγενόμην ἐν πνεύματι (egenomēn en pneumati) "I came to be / was in (the) Spirit" — V-2ADI-1S of γίνομαι (G1096) + PREP ἐν + N-DSN πνεῦμα (G4151). State-entry formula marking the seer's reception of the vision.
  3. ἐν πνεύματι (en pneumati) — the bare locative phrase re-used to mark vision-internal transitions (Rev 17:3; 21:10).
  4. καὶ ἰδού (kai idou) "and behold" — CONJ + V-2AMM-2S of ὁράω (G3708). Presentative particle inside the vision, equivalent to Hebrew wə-hinnēh.

The frames nest: Rev 1:10 opens with ἐγενόμην ἐν πνεύματι (state-entry), then 1:12 καὶ … εἶδον (seeing-mainline); Rev 4:1 μετὰ ταῦτα εἶδον → 4:2 εὐθέως ἐγενόμην ἐν πνεύματι → καὶ ἰδοὺ θρόνος (presentative).

Form Recognition

Frame 1 — καὶ εἶδον (seer-mainline)

  • καὶ (G2532) CONJ + εἶδον V-2AAI-1S of ὁράω (G3708) — second-aorist active indicative, 1st singular.
  • Aspectually perfective: each εἶδον frames a bounded visionary scene as a whole, resets the narrative deictic center, and does not assert chronological succession with adjacent εἶδον frames (see companion entry apocalyptic-narrative-prolepsis).
  • Distribution: Rev 5:1, 2, 6, 11; 6:1, 2, 5, 8, 9, 12; 7:1, 2; 8:2, 13; 9:1, 17; 10:1, 5; 13:1, 2, 11; 14:1, 6, 14; 15:1, 2, 5; 16:13; 17:3, 6; 18:1; 19:11, 17, 19; 20:1, 4, 11, 12; 21:1, 2, 22. Also Dan 7:2, 4, 6, 7, 9, 11, 13, 21 LXX-Theodotion καὶ ἐθεώρουν / καὶ ἰδού.
  • Variant: μετὰ ταῦτα εἶδον "after these things I saw" — Rev 4:1; 7:1, 9; 15:5; 18:1. Marks narrative succession in the seer's experience, not historical sequence of the referents.

Frame 2 — ἐγενόμην ἐν πνεύματι (state-entry)

  • ἐγενόμην V-2ADI-1S of γίνομαι (G1096) — second-aorist middle (deponent) indicative, 1st singular. "I came to be / became / found myself."
  • ἐν (G1722) + πνεύματι N-DSN (G4151) — locative dative of sphere.
  • Four occurrences, structurally identical, bracketing the four major vision-cycles of Revelation:
Reference Greek Parsing Function
Rev 1:10 ἐγενόμην ἐν Πνεύματι ἐν τῇ κυριακῇ ἡμέρᾳ V-2ADI-1S + PREP + N-DSN + PREP + T-DSF + A-DSF + N-DSF Opens the whole book; Patmos / Lord's-day locus
Rev 4:2 εὐθέως ἐγενόμην ἐν Πνεύματι ADV + V-2ADI-1S + PREP + N-DSN Opens throne-vision (chs. 4–16)
Rev 17:3 ἀπήνεγκέν με εἰς ἔρημον ἐν Πνεύματι V-AAI-3S + P-1AS + PREP + A-ASF + PREP + N-DSN Opens harlot-vision (chs. 17–18)
Rev 21:10 ἀπήνεγκέν με ἐν Πνεύματι ἐπὶ ὄρος μέγα καὶ ὑψηλόν V-AAI-3S + P-1AS + PREP + N-DSN + PREP + N-ASN + A-ASN + CONJ + A-ASN Opens new-Jerusalem vision (chs. 21–22)

The first two use active-intransitive γίνομαι; the last two transpose the subject to an angelic guide (ἀπήνεγκέν 3ms of ἀποφέρω G667) with the seer as accusative object (με), while still tagging the state with ἐν Πνεύματι.

  • Parser signature: V-2ADI-1S γίνομαι + PREP ἐν + N-DSN πνεῦμα (or same dative phrase attached to ἀποφέρω).
  • Morphological note: γίνομαι is a lexical middle (deponent) — the middle voice encodes subject-affecting change-of-state ("I came to be"), not passivity. Rendering "I was in the Spirit" (KJV) obscures the ingressive aspect; "I came to be / found myself in (the) Spirit" is aspectually more accurate (Wallace 559, 563; BDAG γίνομαι §5).

Frame 3 — καὶ ἰδού (vision-internal presentative)

  • καὶ (G2532) + ἰδού (G3708) — morphologically V-2AMM-2S of ὁράω ("behold!"), frozen as a discourse particle.
  • Does not inflect for person; functions as a presentative introducing each new element within a vision.
  • Parallel to Hebrew wə-hinnēh (הִנֵּה) — both the LXX and NT Revelation translate wə-hinnēh with καὶ ἰδού consistently.
  • Distribution in Revelation: 4:1, 2; 5:6; 6:2, 5, 8; 7:9; 14:1, 14; 15:5 v.l.; 19:11. Typically immediately follows εἶδον or ἐγενόμην ἐν πνεύματι and introduces the object of sight.

Frame 4 — ancillary openers

  • ἐδείχθη / ὤφθη (V-API-3S of δείκνυμι / ὁράω) — "was shown / appeared." Rev 12:1 σημεῖον … ὤφθη introduces the woman-sign as already-appeared entity. LXX renders Hebrew Niphal nirʾāh (Dan 8:1) with ὤφθη.
  • ἐν ἐκστάσει (N-DSF ἔκστασις G1611) "in (a) trance" — Acts 10:10; 11:5; 22:17. Luke's equivalent of Rev's ἐν πνεύματι, drawn from LXX usage of תַּרְדֵּמָה.
  • τὸ ὅραμα (N-ASN G3705) "the vision" — content-noun; Acts 10:17; 11:5; 16:9, 10; 18:9; Matt 17:9.
  • λέγων / λέγοντος + content — speech within vision. (See companion entry participle-legon-discourse.)

Functions with Examples

1. Book-opening state-entry (Rev 1:10)

Parser output for Rev 1:10:

Word Lemma Morph Gloss
ἐγενόμην γίνομαι V-2ADI-1S came-to-be
ἐν ἐν PREP in
Πνεύματι πνεῦμα N-DSN Spirit
ἐν ἐν PREP in / on
τῇ κυριακῇ ἡμέρᾳ — T-DSF + A-DSF + N-DSF the Lord's-day
ἤκουσα ἀκούω V-AAI-1S I heard

Note the twinned ἐν-datives (sphere "in Spirit" + time "on the Lord's-day"). The state-entry then pivots to auditory mode (ἤκουσα aor. act.) before visual mode (καὶ ἐπιστρέψας εἶδον, 1:12). This mirrors Ezek 1:1 where nip̄təḥû haššāmayim precedes wāʾerʾeh.

2. εὐθέως ingressive (Rev 4:2)

Word Lemma Morph Gloss
εὐθέως εὐθέως ADV immediately
ἐγενόμην γίνομαι V-2ADI-1S I came-to-be
ἐν Πνεύματι — PREP+N-DSN in (the) Spirit
καὶ ἰδού — CONJ + V-2AMM-2S (frozen) and behold
θρόνος θρόνος N-NSM a throne
ἔκειτο κεῖμαι V-INI-3S was set

The adverb εὐθέως reinforces the ingressive force of γίνομαι aorist-middle — not "I was" (durative) but "I came into (the) Spirit-state." καὶ ἰδού then presentatively unveils the throne. This is the classic Hebrew-style wayhî → wə-hinnēh sequence rendered into Greek.

3. Angelic-carry transpositions (Rev 17:3; 21:10)

Both use the same frame: ἀπήνεγκέν με (V-AAI-3S ἀποφέρω + P-1AS) + ἐν Πνεύματι + directional phrase (εἰς ἔρημον / ἐπὶ ὄρος μέγα καὶ ὑψηλόν).

The grammatical subject shifts from the seer (ἐγενόμην, 1:10; 4:2) to the angel (ἀπήνεγκέν, 17:3; 21:10), but ἐν Πνεύματι remains as the locative tag for the seer's state. The seer is being moved-while-in-Spirit — a Greek formalization of Ezek 8:3 / 11:1 / 11:24 where the Spirit lifts and carries the prophet (wayyiqtol Qal of נשא + רוח-agent). Contrast Rev 21:10 with Ezek 40:2: bəmarʾôt ʾĕlōhîm hĕbîʾanî … ʿal-har gābōah məʾōd "in visions of God he brought me … to a very high mountain" — Greek ἀπήνεγκέν με ἐν Πνεύματι ἐπὶ ὄρος μέγα καὶ ὑψηλόν is a near-verbatim rendering.

4. καὶ εἶδον as mainline (Rev 13:1; 14:1; 20:11)

The εἶδον-opener takes a direct accusative object (or accusative + participle) that specifies the content of the seeing. The participle's tense/voice carries the aspect of the seen-object (e.g., Rev 14:1 ἑστός V-2RAP-ASN perfect-active-ptcp = "standing-in-settled-state").

5. ἐν ἐκστάσει (Lukan variant)

Acts 10:10, 11:5, 22:17 use γενέσθαι ἐπ' αὐτὸν ἔκστασιν or ἐν ἐκστάσει ἰδεῖν ὅραμα. The sphere-dative construction matches Revelation's ἐν πνεύματι, but Luke prefers ἔκστασις (a "displacement/trance") over πνεῦμα, probably because his context (Peter on rooftop, Paul in temple) is not overtly pneumatic-eschatological.

Form Function Distinguishing signal
ἐγενόμην ἐν πνεύματι state-entry into vision V-2ADI-1S γίνομαι + ἐν+πνεῦμα, seer as subject
ἐν πνεύματι (bare) vision-internal locative / transition no finite verb of becoming; attached to verb of motion
ἐν ἐκστάσει Lukan trance-frame ἔκστασις instead of πνεῦμα
καὶ εἶδον seeing-mainline V-2AAI-1S ὁράω + acc. object
καὶ ἰδού presentative frozen particle, no person agreement
καὶ ἤκουσα auditory mainline V-AAI-1S ἀκούω; frames what is heard, not seen
λέγων(+acc)+ὅτι / acc.+inf. speech-in-vision present-ptcp of λέγω; see participle-legon-discourse
ὤφθη / ἐδείχθη appearance / showing V-API-3S passive; subject is vision-object, not seer
ἐν ὁράματι / κατ' ὄναρ dream-vision frame ὅραμα / ὄναρ (N-ASN) in dat. or prep-phrase

Semitic-to-Greek Translation Equivalences

Hebrew / Aramaic Greek Notes
wā-ʾerʾeh (Qal wayq 1cs ראה) καὶ εἶδον (V-2AAI-1S ὁράω) Aspectual match: Hebrew wayyiqtol = Greek aorist indicative
rāʾîtî (Qal qatal 1cs) εἶδον / ἐθεώρουν (Theodotion prefers θεωρέω for Aramaic חזה) qatal retrospective = aorist
ḥāzēh hăwêt (Peal ptcp + perf, Aram.) ἐθεώρουν (impf of θεωρέω, LXX-Th) periphrastic durative ↔ Greek imperfective
wə-hinnēh καὶ ἰδού Systematic LXX/NT equivalence
nirʾāh (Niphal perf 3ms) ὤφθη (V-API-3S ὁράω) Niphal passive ↔ aorist passive
hirʾanî (Hiphil perf 3ms + 1cs suf.) ἔδειξέν μοι (V-AAI-3S δείκνυμι + P-1DS) causative Hiphil ↔ active δείκνυμι + dat.
wayhî bišnat usually no direct rendering; LXX often καὶ ἐγένετο ἐν τῷ ἔτει Greek drops bare bišnat sometimes
bərûaḥ (Ezek 11:24; 37:1) ἐν πνεύματι Direct locative-sphere match

Rev's ἐγενόμην ἐν πνεύματι can be read as the Greek fusion of Hebrew wayhî (became / was) + bərûaḥ (in-spirit), producing a single state-entry formula with no exact OT parent but a transparent Semitic substrate. Compare Ezek 37:1 LXX καὶ ἐγένετο ἐπ' ἐμὲ χεὶρ Κυρίου καὶ ἐξήγαγέν με ἐν πνεύματι Κυρίου καὶ ἔθηκέν με ἐν μέσῳ τοῦ πεδίου — the closest single-verse prototype for Rev 17:3 / 21:10.

Interpretive Neutrality

This entry is context-neutral. The formulas establish a block of text as genre-marked vision-report; they do not settle:

  • whether the seer's "being in Spirit" denotes ecstatic displacement, heightened awareness, Sabbath-day worship-state, or pneumatic revelation-channel;
  • whether καὶ εἶδον frames are sequential in their referents or recapitulative (see apocalyptic-narrative-prolepsis);
  • whether the four ἐγενόμην-ἐν-πνεύματι breaks mark the four major divisions of Revelation (as many commentators hold: 1:10; 4:2; 17:3; 21:10) or merely episodic transitions.

These debates are legitimate but belong to passage-analysis and commentary, not to the grammar entry.
