Grammar Analysis: Ezekiel 28:1-19 - Prince/King Structure

Scope. Passage-level structural analysis of Ezekiel 28:1-19. This entry documents the two word-of-YHWH formulas, the address shift from nagid to melek, the qinah/lament frame, and the distinct judgment modes. It does not identify the ultimate referent(s) beyond the grammar of the passage.

Clause Structure

The parser separates the two units by identical formulaic openings:

Verse Clause Type Text Function
28:1 WayX + InfC wayhî dəbar-YHWH ʾēlay + lē'mor New divine-speech unit
28:2 Voct + ZIm0 ben-ʾadam + ʾemor lə-nəgîd ṣor Commission to address the prince
28:11 WayX + InfC wayhî dəbar-YHWH ʾēlay + lē'mor Second divine-speech unit
28:12 Voct + ZIm0 + WQt0 ben-ʾadam + śāʾ qînāh ʿal-melek ṣor + wə-ʾamarta lo Commission to lift a lament over the king

Key Grammatical Features

1. Two Full Word-of-YHWH Formulas

Ezek 28:1 and 28:11 are identical at the parsed level: וַיְהִי Qal wayyiqtol 3ms + דְבַר יְהוָה construct chain + אֵלַי + לֵאמֹר. The repeated formula marks a new discourse block; v.11 is not merely a continuation heading.

2. nagid and melek Are Adjacent but Not Identical Headings

Ezek 28:2 uses לִנְגִיד צֹר ("to prince/chief of Tyre"), a construct chain with nagid as head. Ezek 28:12 uses עַל־מֶלֶךְ צֹור ("over king of Tyre"), again a construct chain but with melek. The grammar does not collapse the two titles; it places two titled address-headings in adjacent oracle units.

3. The Second Unit Is Genre-Marked as Lament

Ezek 28:12 begins with שָׂא קִינָה, Qal imperative 2ms of נשׂא plus the direct object קִינָה. This converts the second oracle from direct indictment into a qinah/lament performance. See qinah-lamentation-foreign-oracles.

4. Distinct Judgment Modes

In 28:7-10 the prince-oracle uses hostile human agents: "strangers" and "terrible of the nations" draw swords, profane splendor, and bring him down. In 28:16-18 the lament unit shifts into a dense first-person divine judgment chain: אֶחַלֶּלְךָ, אַבֶּדְךָ, הִשְׁלַכְתִּיךָ, אֹוצִא, אֲכָלַתְךָ, אֶתֶּנְךָ. See ezk-28-16-18-divine-judgment-verb-chain.
