A Fortiori Argument — πόσῳ μᾶλλον / πολλῷ μᾶλλον (Greek)

Definition

The a fortiori ("from the stronger") argument is a rhetorical-logical structure in which an accepted lesser premise is used to establish a greater conclusion. In NT Greek, this pattern is signaled by the fixed phrase πόσῳ μᾶλλον ("how much more," interrogative) or πολλῷ μᾶλλον ("much more," declarative). Both use μᾶλλον (G3123, comparative adverb "more") modified by a dative of degree of difference — either πόσῳ (G4214, interrogative "how much?") or πολλῷ (G4183, adjective "much").

  1. Interrogative form (πόσῳ μᾶλλον) — poses the greater conclusion as a rhetorical question expecting obvious assent: "how much more will X?"
  2. Declarative form (πολλῷ μᾶλλον) — states the greater conclusion as a direct assertion: "much more will X"
  3. Variant forms — πῶς οὐχὶ μᾶλλον ("how shall not rather...?"), οὐ πολλῷ μᾶλλον / οὐ πολὺ μᾶλλον (negated rhetorical question expecting "yes")

Form Recognition

The a fortiori is a two-part structure:

Protasis (lesser premise): introduced by εἰ γάρ / εἰ δέ / εἰ οὖν (conditional particle + conjunction), sometimes implied from context; states what is conceded or already known.

Apodosis (greater conclusion): introduced by one of the following trigger phrases:

Trigger Phrase Morph Codes Force Translation
πόσῳ μᾶλλον Q-DSN + ADV Interrogative "how much more"
πόσῳ ... χείρονος Q-DSN ... A-GSF Interrogative-negative "how much worse/sorer"
πολλῷ μᾶλλον A-DSN + ADV Declarative "much more"
πολὺ μᾶλλον A-ASN + ADV Declarative "much more/rather"
πῶς οὐχὶ μᾶλλον ADV-I + PRT-I + ADV Rhetorical question "how shall not rather"
οὐ πολλῷ μᾶλλον PRT-N + A-DSN + ADV Negated question "shall he not much more"

Grammatical note on the dative: πόσῳ and πολλῷ are both dative singular neuter — the dative of degree of difference (Wallace §169), specifying the measure by which the conclusion exceeds the premise. The neuter form functions adverbially, modifying μᾶλλον.

Functions with Examples

1. Divine Generosity — Lesser-to-Greater Giver

The most common Synoptic use: if imperfect human agents do X, how much more will the perfect God do X.

2. Creature-to-Creator Value Comparison

If X is true of lesser creatures/things, how much more of the greater.

3. Covenant-Escalation — Old Covenant to New

The theologically richest deployment: if the Mosaic/Levitical order produced result X, how much more does the Christological reality produce result Y.

4. Soteriological Escalation — Sin-to-Grace, Wrath-to-Salvation

If the negative reality (sin, enmity, death) produced X, much more does the positive reality (grace, reconciliation, life) produce Y.

Structure Marker Function Relationship to A Fortiori
Simple comparison μᾶλλον alone Comparative preference ("rather X than Y") No conditional premise; e.g., Matt 10:28 "fear rather him who..."
μᾶλλον ἤ μᾶλλον + ἤ Explicit comparative alternative Selects between two options, not escalating from one
Conditional (εἰ ... τότε) εἰ ... τότε/οὖν Simple logical inference Inference without degree-escalation; no "how much more"
Qal wahomer (Hebrew) None (structural) Rabbinic a fortiori Hebrew rhetorical equivalent; same logic, no fixed lexical marker

The Greek a fortiori is distinguished from simple comparison by three features: (1) an explicit or implied conditional protasis stating the lesser case, (2) a degree-of-difference dative (πόσῳ or πολλῷ) establishing that the conclusion is not merely different but proportionally greater, and (3) the adverb μᾶλλον tying the two together.

Structural Notes

Hebrews concentration: Five of the 22 NT instances occur in Hebrews (2:2–3; 9:13–14; 10:29; 12:9; 12:25). Four of these are negative a fortiori arguments for judgment (if lesser disobedience was punished, greater disobedience will be punished more). Only Heb 9:13–14 is a positive a fortiori (Christ's blood accomplishes more than animal blood). This pattern drives the book's paraenetic structure: the superiority of Christ's priesthood entails proportionally greater accountability.

Pauline concentration in Romans 5: Four instances in Rom 5:9–17 form a rhetorical cascade, each building on the previous: justified → saved from wrath (v.9), reconciled → saved by his life (v.10), offense → grace abounded (v.15), death reigned → reign in life (v.17). The repeated πολλῷ μᾶλλον creates cumulative rhetorical force.

2 Corinthians 3 triplet: Three consecutive a fortiori arguments (vv.8, 9, 11) establish the superiority of the new-covenant ministry over the old in three dimensions: Spirit vs. letter, righteousness vs. condemnation, permanent vs. transient.
