WG: Glory and Honor¶
Overview¶
The Greek concept of glory in the NT involves a cluster of words describing radiant majesty, honor, verbal praise, and the act of rendering glory. δόξα (doxa) is the central noun; δοξάζω (doxazō) is its verb; τιμή (timē) is the relational honor dimension; ἔνδοξος (endoxos) is the adjectival form; ἔπαινος (epainos) covers verbal commendation and praise.

- τιμή (G5092) — from τίω (to value, to honor) — different root but semantically adjacent
- ἔπαινος (G1868) — from ἐπί + αἶνος (a praise word) — verbal/communicative dimension

- H3513 כָּבַד (kabed) — "to be heavy/honored" — primary source for δοξάζω
- H3366 יְקָר (yeqar) — "value/honor" — bridges to τιμή
Roles in the Concept¶
| Role | Word | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Central noun | δόξα (G1391) | The radiant, manifest glory — both divine Shekinah and human honor |
| Action verb | δοξάζω (G1392) | To glorify, render glorious — used of humans honoring God and God glorifying believers |
| Relational honor | τιμή (G5092) | Price-based honor — the honor that is assigned or owed; overlaps with doxa in status contexts |
| Adjectival form | ἔνδοξος (G1741) | "Glorious" — used of Christ, the church, works of healing |
| Verbal praise | ἔπαινος (G1868) | Praise as spoken commendation — overlaps with doxa where doxa = "praise of men" |
Key Passages Where Multiple Group Words Appear¶
- Rev 4:9–11 — δόξα + τιμή + δύναμις in the throne-room doxology: "Worthy art thou to receive glory and honour and power"
- Rev 7:12 — δόξα + seven other terms in angelic ascription: "Blessing, and glory, and wisdom, and thanksgiving, and honour, and power, and might"
- Heb 2:7, 9 — δόξα + τιμή: Christ "crowned with glory and honour"
- Rom 2:7, 10 — δόξα + τιμή + ἀφθαρσία: eschatological reward for the righteous
- 1 Pet 1:7 — τιμή + ἔπαινος + δόξα: faith proved by trial results in "praise and honour and glory"
- John 5:41, 44 — δόξα used twice for human honor, contrasted with the honor that comes from God alone
Key Distinction¶
δόξα and τιμή both translate as "honour" in some contexts, but they represent different facets: - δόξα is intrinsic, visible radiance — what you are, manifest outwardly - τιμή is relational, assigned value — what you are worth to others, like a price
When paired ("glory and honour"), δόξα leads because it grounds the other: true honor follows from genuine radiance.
