Grammar Analysis: Revelation 13:1-10 (The Sea-Beast Pericope)

Mode: Passage unit analysis (context-neutral) Scope: Rev 13:1-10 as a coherent discourse unit Aim: Verse-by-verse parsing, aspectual/tense map, structural/inclusio testing, and a sequence-model comparison grounded in the Greek verb morphology. No interpretive commitments drawn beyond what the grammar supports.

1. Text (NA/TR composite as returned by parser)

v. Greek KJV
1 Καὶ εἶδον ἐκ τῆς θαλάσσης θηρίον ἀναβαῖνον, ἔχον κέρατα δέκα καὶ κεφαλὰς ἑπτά, καὶ ἐπὶ τῶν κεράτων αὐτοῦ δέκα διαδήματα, καὶ ἐπὶ τὰς κεφαλὰς αὐτοῦ ὀνόματα βλασφημίας. And I stood upon the sand of the sea, and saw a beast rise up out of the sea, having seven heads and ten horns, and upon his horns ten crowns, and upon his heads the name of blasphemy.
2 καὶ τὸ θηρίον ὃ εἶδον ἦν ὅμοιον παρδάλει, καὶ οἱ πόδες αὐτοῦ ὡς ἄρκου, καὶ τὸ στόμα αὐτοῦ ὡς στόμα λέοντος. καὶ ἔδωκεν αὐτῷ ὁ δράκων τὴν δύναμιν αὐτοῦ καὶ τὸν θρόνον αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐξουσίαν μεγάλην. And the beast which I saw was like unto a leopard … and the dragon gave him his power, and his seat, and great authority.
3 καὶ μίαν ἐκ τῶν κεφαλῶν αὐτοῦ ὡς ἐσφαγμένην εἰς θάνατον, καὶ ἡ πληγὴ τοῦ θανάτου αὐτοῦ ἐθεραπεύθη. καὶ ἐθαυμάσθη ὅλη ἡ γῆ ὀπίσω τοῦ θηρίου, And I saw one of his heads as it were wounded to death; and his deadly wound was healed: and all the world wondered after the beast.
4 καὶ προσεκύνησαν τῷ δράκοντι ὅτι ἔδωκεν τὴν ἐξουσίαν τῷ θηρίῳ, καὶ προσεκύνησαν τῷ θηρίῳ λέγοντες· Τίς ὅμοιος τῷ θηρίῳ, καὶ τίς δύναται πολεμῆσαι μετ' αὐτοῦ; And they worshipped the dragon … and they worshipped the beast, saying, Who is like unto the beast? who is able to make war with him?
5 καὶ ἐδόθη αὐτῷ στόμα λαλοῦν μεγάλα καὶ βλασφημίας, καὶ ἐδόθη αὐτῷ ἐξουσία ποιῆσαι μῆνας τεσσεράκοντα δύο. And there was given unto him a mouth speaking great things and blasphemies; and power was given unto him to continue forty and two months.
6 καὶ ἤνοιξεν τὸ στόμα αὐτοῦ εἰς βλασφημίας πρὸς τὸν Θεόν, βλασφημῆσαι τὸ ὄνομα αὐτοῦ καὶ τὴν σκηνὴν αὐτοῦ, τοὺς ἐν τῷ οὐρανῷ σκηνοῦντας. And he opened his mouth in blasphemy against God, to blaspheme his name, and his tabernacle, and them that dwell in heaven.
7 καὶ ἐδόθη αὐτῷ ποιῆσαι πόλεμον μετὰ τῶν ἁγίων καὶ νικῆσαι αὐτούς, καὶ ἐδόθη αὐτῷ ἐξουσία ἐπὶ πᾶσαν φυλὴν καὶ λαὸν καὶ γλῶσσαν καὶ ἔθνος. And it was given unto him to make war with the saints, and to overcome them: and power was given him over all kindreds, and tongues, and nations.
8 καὶ προσκυνήσουσιν αὐτὸν πάντες οἱ κατοικοῦντες ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς, οὗ οὐ γέγραπται τὸ ὄνομα αὐτοῦ ἐν τῷ βιβλίῳ τῆς ζωῆς τοῦ Ἀρνίου τοῦ ἐσφαγμένου ἀπὸ καταβολῆς κόσμου. And all that dwell upon the earth shall worship him, whose names are not written in the book of life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world.
9 Εἴ τις ἔχει οὖς, ἀκουσάτω. If any man have an ear, let him hear.
10 εἴ τις εἰς αἰχμαλωσίαν, εἰς αἰχμαλωσίαν ὑπάγει· εἴ τις ἐν μαχαίρῃ ἀποκτενεῖ, δεῖ αὐτὸν ἐν μαχαίρῃ ἀποκτανθῆναι. Ὧδέ ἐστιν ἡ ὑπομονὴ καὶ ἡ πίστις τῶν ἁγίων. He that leadeth into captivity shall go into captivity: he that killeth with the sword must be killed with the sword. Here is the patience and the faith of the saints.

Verbal frame: perfect participle ἐσφαγμένην (state of having-been-slain, ongoing) + two aorist passives ἐθεραπεύθη, ἐθαυμάσθη (punctiliar events: the healing, the wondering). The perfect aspect of the slaying-state is critical — it is not reported as a point-event but as an abiding condition visible at the vision-moment.

Text-critical note: Manuscripts split on the verbs of the protases/apodoses. The Byzantine/TR form used by the parser gives present ὑπάγει (apodosis 1) and future ἀποκτενεῖ (protasis 2). Critical editions (NA28) read a symmetric chiastic pattern with passives on both sides. The aspect-logic below works with either reading.

Verbal frame: present (ὑπάγει), future (ἀποκτενεῖ), impersonal present δεῖ + aorist passive infinitive ἀποκτανθῆναι. A sententious "law-of-retribution" formula in lex-talionis shape, closing with a nominal Ὧδέ ἐστιν ("here is…") identification.

Future 2 (προσκυνήσουσιν, ἀποκτενεῖ) Projected action

Load-bearing observations

  1. Perfect-aspect anchor of the slain imagery (v.3 ↔ v.8). Both σφάζω forms are perfect passive — the beast's slain-head (ἐσφαγμένην, v.3) and the Lamb's slain-state (ἐσφαγμένου, v.8). The perfect is stative (a present condition resulting from a past action), not a narrative event marker. The perfect does not tell us when the slaying happened on John's timeline; it tells us the state the figure is in at the vision-moment. See grammar-reference/greek/ (no perfect-tense entry yet — gap flagged).
  2. Healing and wondering are aorist passives (ἐθεραπεύθη, ἐθαυμάσθη) — genuine event-verbs. Whatever the perfect stative means temporally, the healing and the earth's wondering are narrated as completed events from John's vantage.
  3. The giving-chain switches voice at v.5. v.2 ἔδωκεν (active, subject = dragon) is the only active transfer. From v.5 onward every transfer is ἐδόθη (aorist passive, agent unnamed — the so-called "divine passive" construction; also usable as permissive passive). v.5 (×2), v.7 (×2) = four ἐδόθη's, each paired with or followed by an aorist infinitive of complement.
  4. The worship-verb changes tense across the unit. v.4 = aorist προσεκύνησαν ×2 (event). v.8 = future προσκυνήσουσιν. This is the single most exegetically significant tense-shift in the pericope (see §6 below).
  5. v.10 mixes present + future + deontic-present + aorist infinitive. It is a gnomic/proverbial sentence, not narrative — the aspect does not fit the event-chain of vv.1-8 but steps outside it (marked by εἴ τις … εἴ τις …).

4. Structural Outline — Inclusio / Chiasm Test

The request is to test whether v.2's triad (power / throne / authority) and v.10's retribution-pair (captivity / sword) form an inclusio or chiasm around vv.3-9.

4.1 Lexical frame of v.2

v.2 closes with an asyndetic-but-καί-coordinated triad: - τὴν δύναμιν αὐτοῦ (G1411, N-ASF) - τὸν θρόνον αὐτοῦ (G2362, N-ASM) - ἐξουσίαν μεγάλην (G1849, N-ASF)

Voice = active (ἔδωκεν, agent = dragon). This is the initiating transfer.

4.2 Lexical frame of v.10

v.10 is a two-membered conditional proverb: - protasis₁ εἴ τις εἰς αἰχμαλωσίαν → apodosis₁ εἰς αἰχμαλωσίαν ὑπάγει - protasis₂ εἴ τις ἐν μαχαίρῃ ἀποκτενεῖ → apodosis₂ δεῖ αὐτὸν ἐν μαχαίρῃ ἀποκτανθῆναι

Lexemes: αἰχμαλωσία (G161) ×2; μάχαιρα (G3162) ×2; ἀποκτείνω (G615) ×2. No verbal or nominal overlap with v.2.

4.3 Is it an inclusio?

A strict lexical inclusio fails. δύναμις, θρόνος, ἐξουσία do not reappear in v.10; αἰχμαλωσία, μάχαιρα, ἀποκτείνω do not appear in v.2. No shared root.

A thematic/functional inclusio is defensible but weak. v.2 grants offensive capacity (power/throne/authority → to act upon others); v.10 articulates the principle of reversal (those who captured/killed undergo captivity/killing). If one reads the pericope as a rise-fall arc, v.2 and v.10 bracket it functionally (giving ↔ receiving-back). But this is interpretation, not grammar.

A chiasm within v.10 is present (and internally marked):

A εἰς αἰχμαλωσίαν [captivity-dest]
  B εἰς αἰχμαλωσίαν ὑπάγει [goes-into-captivity]
A' ἐν μαχαίρῃ ἀποκτενεῖ [kill-with-sword]
  B' ἐν μαχαίρῃ ἀποκτανθῆναι [be-killed-with-sword]
Each protasis-apodosis pair exhibits paronomasia (noun-noun or verb-verb echo) and the two pairs are parallel members (captivity / sword). In NA28's reading the chiasm tightens further (both apodoses passive). This is a micro-chiasm internal to v.10, not a macro-chiasm across vv.2-10.

4.4 Is there any macro-chiasm across vv.1-10?

Testing the most plausible candidates by lexical repetition (from the parser output):

Term Verses
θηρίον 1, 2, 3, 4 (×2), (implied in 5-8)
δράκων 2, 4
ἔδωκεν (act) 2, 4
ἐδόθη (pass) 5 (×2), 7 (×2)
ἐξουσία 2, 4, 5, 7
στόμα 2, 5, 6
προσκυνέω 4 (×2), 8
σφάζω (perf pass) 3, 8
βλασφημία/βλασφημέω 1, 5, 6 (×2)
κεφαλή 1, 3
ἅγιοι 7, 10

A genuine structural signal emerges: σφάζω-perf-pass brackets vv.3 and 8 (beast's slain-head ↔ Lamb's slain-state), and ἅγιοι brackets vv.7 and 10. These are lexical echoes but not full chiasms. The pericope is better described as a concentric / panelled discourse than a tight chiasm:

v.1 Vision: beast from sea (aorist εἶδον, pres ptcps)
v.2 Dragon → beast: power/throne/authority (ACTIVE ἔδωκεν)
v.3 Head-slain / healed / earth-wonders ⟵ σφάζω-perf
v.4 Worship (aor) of dragon + beast; rhetorical questions
––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––
v.5 ἐδόθη × 2 : mouth + 42-month authority ⟵ core panel
v.6 Aorist narrative: ἤνοιξεν + βλασφημῆσαι ⟵ core panel
v.7 ἐδόθη × 2 : war-with-saints + universal scope ⟵ core panel
––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––
v.8 Worship (FUTURE) of beast; Lamb σφάζω-perf ⟵ σφάζω-perf
v.9 Hearing-formula (aor impv)
v.10 Lex-talionis micro-chiasm (captivity / sword)

The clearest structural feature is a central ἐδόθη-panel (vv.5-7) flanked by narrative frames (vv.1-4 and vv.8-10). v.3 and v.8 share the perfect passive of σφάζω — the one genuine lexical inclusio in the unit — around the ἐδόθη-panel.

5. Bookending Test — Does v.3 (wound) + v.10 (sword-judgment) Bracket the 42-Month Dominion?

The hypothesis: v.3 wound and v.10 sword-judgment bookend the 42-month dominion described in vv.5-8.

5.1 What the verbs actually mark

  • v.3 wound: ἐσφαγμένην (perf pass ptcp) describes the head's state; ἐθεραπεύθη (aor pass) reports the healing. Grammatically these are two different predications: a stative (already-slain) and an event (got healed). Neither is marked as "happening" at a particular point in the 42-month sequence — they are simply what John sees.
  • v.10 sword-judgment: ὑπάγει (pres), ἀποκτενεῖ (fut), δεῖ + ἀποκτανθῆναι (pres + aor-pass-inf). This is a gnomic/deontic proverb, not a narrated event. v.10 does not describe a future moment in the storyline of the beast; it states a principle addressed to the ἅγιοι.
  • 42-month dominion: μῆνας τεσσεράκοντα δύο in v.5 is accusative of duration (extent of time) modifying ποιῆσαι. It covers the whole ἐδόθη-panel (vv.5-7), with v.8's future worship and vv.9-10's paraenesis as its aftermath.

5.2 Does the bookend hypothesis hold grammatically?

Partially. The grammar supports the following: - v.3 reports the wound and healing as already-completed (from John's vision-vantage) before any 42-month activity is narrated. Sequentially in the text, wound+healing precede vv.5-7. - v.10 is detached from the narrative timeline altogether (gnomic conditionals), so it does not narrate the end of the 42 months. It states a general law that applies to or comments on what has been narrated.

The grammar does NOT support a reading in which v.3's wound and v.10's sword-judgment are a matching pair of wounds — they are different lexical fields (σφάζω "slay/slaughter" vs. μάχαιρα + ἀποκτείνω "sword-kill"). A wounding-bookend would expect shared lexis.

The grammar IS compatible with reading v.3 as a proleptic summary and v.10 as a post-panel reflection on retribution — i.e. v.3 comes textually first but may describe a state that chronologically spans or follows the 42 months (see §8 below on Model B).

5.3 The genuine σφάζω-bracket is v.3 ↔ v.8, not v.3 ↔ v.10

The only lexical σφάζω-bracket in the pericope is v.3 (ἐσφαγμένην, beast-head) ↔ v.8 (ἐσφαγμένου, Lamb). Both are perfect passive participles of the same verb. This is a pointed stylistic juxtaposition: a slain-and-healed beast-head counterposed to a slain Lamb whose book-of-life has been standing-written (γέγραπται, perf pass) from καταβολῆς κόσμου. Whatever the bookend is, grammatically it centers on these two σφάζω-perfects.

6. Position of v.4 Adoration — Chronological or Ongoing?

Question: does the worship of v.4 follow chronologically from the healing (v.3), or does it describe ongoing worship during/after the 42 months of vv.5-8?

6.1 Tense evidence

  • v.4: προσεκύνησαν ×2 — aorist active indicative, 3rd plural. Aorist = perfective aspect; the event is viewed as a whole. It does not specify whether the action is momentary, iterative, or summary; aspect ≠ Aktionsart.
  • v.8: προσκυνήσουσιν — future active indicative, 3rd plural. Projects the same action forward.

Two aorist προσεκύνησαν's in v.4 + one future προσκυνήσουσιν in v.8 = three worship-predications spanning the pericope.

6.2 Syntactic placement

v.4 follows v.3 with καὶ — the default Greek connective. καί + aorist indicative in Revelation standardly marks narrative succession in the vision, not necessarily chronological succession in the events depicted. Revelation's καὶ-aorist chains are John's way of stringing what he saw, not calendar points.

The causal ὅτι in v.4 (καὶ προσεκύνησαν τῷ δράκοντι ὅτι ἔδωκεν τὴν ἐξουσίαν τῷ θηρίῳ) syntactically subordinates v.4 worship to the v.2 giving — the reason they worship the dragon is that he gave. This is a grammatical link back to v.2, not forward to v.5.

6.3 Reading options supported by grammar

  • Chronological-linear reading: aorist προσεκύνησαν = the worship that erupts after the healing of v.3. Aorist is the natural narrative tense for a reported event in the flow.
  • Summary-of-the-period reading: the aorist summarizes the earth's worship during the whole span of dominion (vv.5-8); v.8's future προσκυνήσουσιν then re-projects it forward for paraenetic effect on John's audience. Aorist can summarize (constative/complexive aorist), so this is grammatically admissible.
  • The v.8 future is the decisive clue. If v.4's aorist referred only to a point-event in the past of the vision, why re-predicate the same verb in the future in v.8 about the same constituency (πάντες οἱ κατοικοῦντες ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς ↔ ὅλη ἡ γῆ of v.3)? The most economical reading: v.4 aorist is the vision-mode narration of the earth-wide worship, and v.8 future is the same reality viewed prospectively from the reader's vantage — paraenetic framing for "this is what's coming / continuing."

Grammar alone cannot decide between these. What grammar rules out: a reading in which v.4 is a single past event that has ended by v.5 (the subject πάντες οἱ κατοικοῦντες of v.8 reactivates the "whole earth" of v.3-4 and projects it forward).

7. v.7 Parallel to v.5's ἐδόθη + ποιῆσαι

7.1 The four ἐδόθη constructions (side-by-side)

Four identical main verbs (ἐδόθη αὐτῷ). Constituents:

Position v.5a v.5b v.7a v.7b
Subject (what is given) στόμα ἐξουσία (implicit: the action) ἐξουσία
Modifier λαλοῦν μεγάλα καὶ βλασφημίας (pres ptcp) ποιῆσαι μῆνας 42 (aor inf + acc dur) ποιῆσαι πόλεμον + νικῆσαι (two aor inf) ἐπὶ πᾶσαν φυλὴν κτλ (prep phrase)

7.2 Grammatical observations

  1. v.7a is morphologically the most stripped form: ἐδόθη αὐτῷ ποιῆσαι — no nominal subject between αὐτῷ and ποιῆσαι. The aorist infinitive ποιῆσαι itself functions as the subject of ἐδόθη ("it was given to him to make war…"). This is the exact construction of v.5b but with the subject-noun ἐξουσία elided.
  2. v.7 expands and specifies v.5. v.5 grants (i) mouth-for-blasphemy and (ii) authority-to-act-42-months. v.7 specifies the content of that 42-month acting: war-with-saints + victory, and universal geographic reach. v.5 and v.7 are therefore not two separate giving-events but one giving articulated at two levels of granularity — the number of ἐδόθη's is stylistic repetition, not four distinct transfers.
  3. The aorist infinitives carry the verbal content. ποιῆσαι (v.5b, v.7a), νικῆσαι (v.7a), plus λαλέω as a present participle in v.5a (ongoing speech) and βλασφημῆσαι as purpose-aorist-inf in v.6. The aorist infinitives after ἐδόθη are complementary: they state what the gift is to accomplish.
  4. The accusative of duration μῆνας τεσσεράκοντα δύο (v.5b) governs the whole panel. Since v.7 is articulating the same giving at greater specificity, the 42 months attaches to the content of v.7 as well — not as a separate extension, but as the temporal envelope of the entire ἐδόθη-grant.

7.3 Is the parallel a true doublet or a progressive expansion?

Morphologically it is a progressive expansion (v.5 general → v.7 specific), carried by the anaphoric repetition of ἐδόθη αὐτῷ. Ancient rhetorical practice calls this amplificatio; the grammar shows it via (a) identical head verbs, (b) tightening of object-clauses, (c) widening of scope (ἐξουσία in v.5b governs time-duration; ἐξουσία in v.7b governs space-scope — tribe/people/tongue/nation).

8. v.8 Worship Verb Form vs. v.3b "All the Earth Wondered"

8.1 Forms compared

Ref Verb Lemma Tense Voice Mood
v.3b ἐθαυμάσθη ὅλη ἡ γῆ θαυμάζω Aorist Pass (dep) Ind
v.8 προσκυνήσουσιν … πάντες οἱ κατοικοῦντες ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς προσκυνέω Future Act Ind

8.2 Subjects compared

  • v.3b: ὅλη ἡ γῆ ("all the earth") — abstract/collective subject, singular concord (ἐθαυμάσθη is 3rd sg).
  • v.8: πάντες οἱ κατοικοῦντες ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς ("all those dwelling on the earth") — plural substantive participle, 3rd pl concord (προσκυνήσουσιν).

Same referent (the earth's population), different morphological framing. v.3b uses a synecdochic place-for-people (γῆ) with singular collective verb; v.8 uses an explicit people-dwelling-on-place paraphrase with plural verb. The shift from singular-collective to plural-substantive-participle is a standard Revelation pattern when moving from vision-description to paraenetic application.

8.3 Tense shift aorist → future

The most pointed grammatical feature of the pericope.

  • Aorist (v.3b, v.4) = perfective narration within the vision. The events are bundled and presented as wholes.
  • Future (v.8) = prospective projection. The indicative future is predictive/assertive about what will obtain.

Two coherent readings:

(A) Iterative/progressive reading: the wondering/worship of v.3-4 is ongoing; v.8 simply views it prospectively. On this view the aorists of v.3-4 are summary/constative (the whole duration viewed as one whole), and v.8's future is that same duration viewed from outside — the same state-of-affairs, different aspect-perspective.

(B) Staged reading: v.3-4 is the initial worship-response at the healing; v.8 is the climactic/final worship at the end of (or extending beyond) the 42 months. On this view the aorists are point-events and the future is a distinct later event.

Grammar alone cannot adjudicate. What grammar does say: the two predications share subject (earth / earth-dwellers), share verb-field (wonder → worship is the standard Revelation sequence), and differ only in aspect-perspective (aorist whole-view vs. future prospective). A minimum-commitment reading treats them as one continuous reality rendered in two aspects.

Recall that v.3's participle is perfect (stative). The perfect frames the slain-head as an abiding condition. If the earth wonders "after" that condition (ὀπίσω τοῦ θηρίου), and if the condition is ongoing (perfect aspect), then the aorist ἐθαυμάσθη is naturally read as a constative covering the whole duration of that ongoing state — which dovetails with v.8's future projection.

9. Sequence Diagram — Model A vs Model B

9.1 Model A: Chronological-linear

Each verse is a temporal step; the arrow of narrative = arrow of time.

v.1 vision opens ─┐
v.2 dragon gives ─┤ (endowment)
v.3a HEAD WOUNDED ─┼──► (point-event: wounding)
v.3b HEAD HEALED ─┼──► (point-event: healing)
v.3c earth wonders─┼──► (response)
v.4 earth worships┤ (response continues)
v.5 ἐδόθη 42mo ───┼══════ 42-month dominion begins ═══►
v.6 blasphemy ═╡
v.7 war on saints═╡
v.8 worldwide worship + Lamb reference
v.9 hearing-call
v.10 sword-retribution ──► (final reversal / end of dominion)

Supporting grammar for Model A: - καί-aorist narrative chain = default successive reading. - v.3's aorists (ἐθεραπεύθη, ἐθαυμάσθη) = events in sequence. - v.5 ἐδόθη marks the onset of the 42-month period; v.6-7 are its content; v.8 is its terminus; v.10 is the retributive end.

Tension for Model A: - v.3a ἐσφαγμένην is perfect, not aorist. Perfect resists a "point-event at this narrative moment" reading. - v.10 verbs (pres ὑπάγει, fut ἀποκτενεῖ, pres δεῖ + aor inf) are gnomic, not a narrated event — v.10 does not naturally serve as "the terminal event" of the 42 months. - v.8's future προσκυνήσουσιν awkwardly follows v.4's aorist if all worship-events are strictly sequential.

9.2 Model B: Summary-prolepsis

v.3 shows the terminal/summary state first; vv.5-10 rewind to explain/develop that state; v.10 = the coming reversal addressed to the reader.

v.9 hearing-formula

v.10 [GNOMIC PROVERB — addressed to saints]
εἴ τις εἰς αἰχμαλωσίαν → εἰς αἰχμαλωσίαν ὑπάγει
εἴ τις ἐν μαχαίρῃ ἀποκτενεῖ → δεῖ ... ἀποκτανθῆναι
     = reversal-principle, not a narrative terminus

Supporting grammar for Model B: - Perfect ἐσφαγμένην (v.3) = stative. Reads naturally as "a head-standing-in-a-slain-state" rather than "a head that got wounded at this point in the timeline." Perfect regularly encodes a present condition resulting from a past action whose time-point is unspecified or irrelevant. - Perfect σφάζω matches at v.3 and v.8 (bracketing the ἐδόθη-panel) — the two perfects frame the 42-month panel, suggesting the perfects are panel-boundary states and the aorists within are panel-internal events. - v.4's aorist grounded in v.2 (ὅτι-clause) links worship to the initial giving, making v.4 a summary of the response across the whole dominion, not a single post-healing instant. - v.5-7 four-fold ἐδόθη chain reads as a unified expository panel (see §7.3), not four beats on a timeline. - v.8 future naturally frames the ἐδόθη-panel's worship-outcome prospectively for the reader, matching the aorist-constative + future-prospective aspect pair noted in §8. - v.10 gnomic verbs (present + future + deontic δεῖ + aor inf) stand outside the narrative line — paraenesis, not chronology.

Tension for Model B: - καί-aorist chains in Revelation do typically narrate vision-succession; Model B requires reading v.3 as proleptic-summary-within-the-vision-order — defensible but more complex than the default. - Model B owes an account of why v.3's aorist ἐθεραπεύθη is not a timeline-point. Answer available from grammar: aorist is perfective aspect (view-as-whole), which is compatible with summary/constative use when the aspectual context is dominated by perfects/statives (as v.3 is).

9.3 What the grammar decides, and what it doesn't

Grammar decides: - v.2 is distinct from v.5-7: active ἔδωκεν (dragon-as-agent) vs. passive ἐδόθη × 4 (agent unnamed). These are not the same kind of transfer. - v.3 and v.8 are linked by matching perfect-passive σφάζω participles — a genuine lexical bracket around the ἐδόθη-panel. - v.5-7 is a single expository panel under the accusative-of-duration μῆνας τεσσεράκοντα δύο. - v.10 is gnomic/deontic, not narrative-terminal. - v.9 is a standard hearing-formula (aorist imperative), signaling paraenetic shift.

Grammar does not decide: - Whether v.3's wound-and-heal is chronologically prior to, concurrent with, or posterior to the 42 months. Perfect aspect is time-non-committal. - Whether v.4's aorist worship is a single post-healing response or a constative summary of the 42-month earth-wide response. Aorist is aspect-committal (perfective) but Aktionsart-neutral. - Whether v.8's future is the same referent as v.4 re-projected or a distinct later event.

Grammar is friendlier to Model B than Model A on two counts: 1. The perfect aspect of ἐσφαγμένην (v.3) and ἐσφαγμένου (v.8) is the single most aspect-distinctive feature of the pericope and it brackets the ἐδόθη-panel rather than locating point-events on a line. 2. v.10's gnomic/deontic verb-morphology refuses to serve as a narrative terminus in the way Model A needs.

Model A is sustainable if one treats the aorists as default narrative and the perfects as stylistic flourish; Model B is more sensitive to the actual tense/aspect distribution.

11. Executive Summary (for downstream studies)

  • Finite-verb tense distribution: 11 aorists (event/summary), 3 perfects (state: ἐσφαγμένην v.3, γέγραπται v.8, ἐσφαγμένου v.8), 5 presents (descriptive/gnomic), 1 imperfect (ἦν v.2), 2 futures (προσκυνήσουσιν v.8, ἀποκτενεῖ v.10).
  • Voice pivot at v.5: active ἔδωκεν (dragon-subject, v.2) → four passive ἐδόθη's (vv.5, 7) with unnamed agent.
  • Real inclusio = σφάζω-perfect at v.3 ↔ v.8 (beast-head slain-state ↔ Lamb slain-state). The v.2-v.10 pairing is not a lexical inclusio; v.10 contains its own internal micro-chiasm.
  • v.5-7 is a single ἐδόθη-panel under the accusative-of-duration μῆνας τεσσεράκοντα δύο; v.7 is progressive expansion of v.5, not a separate giving.
  • v.4 worship (aor) and v.8 worship (fut) share subject (earth-dwellers) and verb (προσκυνέω); grammar permits either sequential or constative-prospective readings but tilts toward the latter given the perfect-bracket at v.3/v.8.
  • v.10 is gnomic-deontic, not narrative-terminal. It addresses the ἅγιοι (cf. v.7) with a reversal-principle rather than marking the end-point of the 42 months.
  • Between Model A and Model B the grammar favors Model B (summary-prolepsis at v.3, rewind at vv.5-7, prospective projection at v.8, paraenesis at v.10) without ruling out Model A. A study that wants Model A must account for the perfect-aspect of ἐσφαγμένην and the gnomic status of v.10.
