Grammar Analysis: Daniel 8:10–12¶
The little horn's vertical assault on heaven. Three verses densely layered with stem alternation — Qal wayyiqtol narrative foregrounding the horn's ascent (v.10), Hiphil/Hophal active-passive voice-pair at the hinge of the reflexive-intensive higdîl "he magnified himself" → hûram / hušlaḵ "was taken away / was cast down" (v.11), and a Niphal divine passive tinnāṯēn "was given over" flanked by Hiphil tašlēḵ active casting down of truth (v.12). Two parser-verified construct chains anchor the vertical axis — צְבָא הַשָּׁמָיִם "host of the heavens" (v.10) and מְכוֹן מִקְדָּשׁוֹ "place of HIS sanctuary" (v.11, 3ms pronominal suffix on the absolute member). The 3ms suffix on miqdāš is syntactically bound to the nearest eligible 3ms antecedent שַׂר־הַצָּבָא "Prince of the host" — a heavenly figure — so "his sanctuary" is grammatically the Prince's sanctuary, not the horn's. The passive cluster hûram (Hophal) / hušlaḵ (Hophal) / tinnāṯēn (Niphal) encodes agentless or divine-agency action in the exact slots where an active verb would name the agent; the one unambiguously active verb with the horn as subject in the triad is v.11's higdîl (Hiphil perfect of גדל "he magnified [himself]" — internal-causative/reflexive force).

KJV (Dan 8:10): And it waxed great, [even] to the host of heaven; and it cast down [some] of the host and of the stars to the ground, and stamped upon them.
KJV (Dan 8:11): Yea, he magnified [himself] even to the prince of the host, and by him the daily [sacrifice] was taken away, and the place of his sanctuary was cast down.
KJV (Dan 8:12): And an host was given [him] against the daily [sacrifice] by reason of transgression, and it cast down the truth to the ground; and it practised, and prospered.

Clause Structure¶
Daniel 8:10 — Three-clause wayyiqtol narrative chain (Way0 → Way0 → Way0, Domain N)¶
| Clause | Type | Text | Functional roles |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Way0 | וַתִּגְדַּל עַד־צְבָא הַשָּׁמָיִם | [Conj] + [Pred] tigdal + [Cmpl] ʿaḏ-ṣəḇāʾ haš-šāmayim |
| 2 | Way0 | וַתַּפֵּל אַרְצָה מִן־הַצָּבָא וּמִן־הַכּוֹכָבִים | [Conj] + [Pred] tappēl + [Cmpl] ʾarṣāh + [Objc] min-haṣ-ṣāḇāʾ û-min-hak-kôḵāḇîm |
| 3 | Way0 | וַתִּרְמְסֵם | [Conj] + [PreO] tirməsēm (verb-with-object-suffix, no overt complement) |
All three predicates are 3fs wayyiqtol with continuous subject-chaining from the f.s. referent in v.9 (qeren "horn" is grammatically f.s.). Clause 3 is a bare Verb+Objc (3mp suffix -ēm = "them"), narratologically climactic — minimal surface for maximal violence.
Daniel 8:11 — Three-clause perfect chain with fronted constituents (WxQ0 → WxQX → WQtX, Domain N)¶
| Clause | Type | Text | Functional roles |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | WxQ0 | וְעַד־שַׂר־הַצָּבָא הִגְדִּיל | [Conj] + [Cmpl] ʿaḏ-śar-haṣ-ṣāḇāʾ (fronted — focus position) + [Pred] higdîl |
| 2 | WxQX | וּמִמֶּנּוּ הוּרַם הַתָּמִיד | [Conj] + [Cmpl] mimmennû (fronted) + [Pred] hûram + [Subj] hat-tāmîḏ |
| 3 | WQtX | וְהֻשְׁלַךְ מְכוֹן מִקְדָּשׁוֹ | [Conj] + [Pred] hušlaḵ + [Subj] məḵôn miqdāšô |
The parser codes these as WxQ / WQt (waw + X + qatal, waw + qatal) — not wayyiqtol — which is the Biblical Hebrew signature for backgrounding / circumstantial / focus-fronted material breaking out of the foregrounded wayyiqtol narrative of v.10. The result is a discourse shift: v.10 narrates the horn's action on the host; v.11 shifts register to highlight the new target (ʿaḏ-śar-haṣ-ṣāḇāʾ fronted) and the resulting passive events (ʾûram ʾe ha-tāmîḏ / hušlaḵ məḵôn miqdāšô*). Cross-link syntax-wx-qatal-circumstantial.
Daniel 8:12 — Four-clause mixed chain (WXYq → WYqX → WQt0 → WQt0, Domain D — discursive/direct)¶
| Clause | Type | Text | Functional roles |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | WXYq | וְצָבָא תִּנָּתֵן עַל־הַתָּמִיד בְּפָשַׁע | [Conj] + [Subj] ṣāḇāʾ (fronted, topicalized) + [Pred] tinnāṯēn + [Adju] ʿal-hat-tāmîḏ + [Adju] bə-p̄āšaʿ |
| 2 | WYqX | וְתַשְׁלֵךְ אֱמֶת אַרְצָה | [Conj] + [Pred] tašlēḵ + [Subj] ʾĕmeṯ + [Cmpl] ʾarṣāh |
| 3 | WQt0 | וְעָשְׂתָה | [Conj] + [Pred] ʿāśəṯāh |
| 4 | WQt0 | וְהִצְלִיחָה | [Conj] + [Pred] hiṣlîḥāh |
The parser tags Domain D (discursive — non-narrative, deliberative/prospective/gnomic register), distinct from the narrative Domain N of vv.10–11. This confirms that v.12 is the interpretive consequence / summary evaluation of the vision-event, not a continuation of its narration. The final two clauses wə-ʿāśəṯāh wə-hiṣlîḥāh (weqatal pair) echo the stereotyped Danielic success-formula of v.24 (wə-hiṣlîaḥ wə-ʿāśâ in inverted order — cross-link dan-8-23-25).
Construct Chains (parser-verified)¶
| Verse | Construct Chain | Translation | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| 8:10 | צְבָא הַשָּׁמָיִם | "host of the heavens" | locates the host in heaven, not on earth |
| 8:11 | שַׂר הַצָּבָא | "prince of the host" | heavenly ruler-figure over the host of 8:10 |
| 8:11 | מְכוֹן מִקְדָּשׁוֹ | "place of his-sanctuary" | two-member chain; 3ms suffix attaches to absolute miqdāš, scopes over the whole chain — "the place of HIS sanctuary" |
The three construct chains form a vertical ladder: host → prince-over-host → sanctuary-of-prince. Each step is anchored in heaven by the first chain (ṣəḇāʾ haš-šāmayim) and by the 3ms suffix on the third chain pointing back to the heavenly śar. No earthly-sanctuary referent is grammatically available in the passage; the text supplies only the heavenly antecedent.
Key Grammatical Features¶
1. וַתִּגְדַּל עַד — Qal wayyiqtol of גדל + עַד "grew up to / as high as" (v.10, 11)¶
- Forms: v.10 tigdal (Qal.Wayq.3fs of גדל H1431, "grew great"); v.11 higdîl (Hiphil.Perf.3ms of גדל, "he magnified [himself]").
- Stem alternation: Qal wayq (basic, intransitive — "grew") → Hiphil perfect (internal-causative / reflexive-intensive — "magnified himself"). The Hiphil of גדל without an overt object is the classic self-exaltation register (cf. Isa 10:15 hityaḡḡēl / yiṯnaśśēʾ of the Assyrian axe; Psa 35:26; 38:17; 55:13 Hiphil higdîl of enemy speech against the psalmist). The Hiphil voice silently supplies the reflexive direct object.
- Preposition עַד "up-to/as-high-as": spatial vertical-reach marker; occurs 3× in the triad — (a) v.10 ʿaḏ-ṣəḇāʾ haš-šāmayim (reaches the host), (b) v.11 ʿaḏ-śar-haṣ-ṣāḇāʾ (reaches the Prince of the host). The preposition climbs the ladder: host → Prince. The horn's self-magnification culminates not at a general altitude but at the specific heavenly figure named in the construct chain.
- Significance: grammar distinguishes growth (Qal, v.10) from self-aggrandizement (Hiphil, v.11). Cross-links: stem-hiphil (causative/internal-causative H-stem), hiphil-imperfect, word study H1431-gadal, translation-pair TR-gadal-megaluno.
2. וַתַּפֵּל / וַתִּרְמְסֵם — Hiphil wayq of נפל + Qal wayq of רמס with 3mp object-suffix (v.10)¶
- Forms: tappēl (Verb.Hiphil.Wayq.3fs of נפל H5307 "cause to fall / cast down") + tirməsēm (Verb.Qal.Wayq.3fs of רמס H7429 "trample" + 3mp object-suffix -ēm "them").
- Significance: tappēl = Hiphil causative of the common Qal nāp̄al "fall"; morphology encodes an external agent causing the falling — the horn is grammatical causer of the host's downward motion. Locative ʾarṣāh "to-the-ground" (Noun.s.Abs with locative -āh suffix, specifies endpoint of fall, not a second noun phrase). The 3mp object-suffix on tirməsēm grammatically resumes both the host and the stars as its antecedent (mixed-gender plural defaults to 3mp).
- Cross-links: word study H5307-naphal, TR-naphal-pipto, word study H7429-ramas, word study H3556-kokab (stars), word study H6635-tsaba (host), word study H8064-shamayim (heavens).
3. הוּרַם / הֻשְׁלַךְ — The Hophal passive cluster of v.11¶
- Forms: hûram (Verb.Hophal.Perf.3ms of רום H7311 "be-high / be-exalted" → Hophal "was-lifted/taken-away") + hušlaḵ (Verb.Hophal.Perf.3ms of שׁלך H7993 "throw" → Hophal "was-cast-down").
- Hophal stem: passive of Hiphil. Morphology: prefix הֻ־ (hu- / o-vowel preformative) + stem + perfect afformative. The Hiphil/Hophal pair is Hebrew's lexical active-passive voice alternation for causative verbs — the Hiphil says "X caused Y to happen," the Hophal says "Y was caused-to-happen (by unspecified/obscured agent)." Hophal is rare (~400× vs. Hiphil's ~9,000×) and clusters at precisely these moments of action-without-named-agent. Parallel: no existing grammar-reference entry yet for Hophal — candidate gap for a future canonical entry; related pair Hiphil/Hiphil-internal-causative is documented at stem-hiphil and hiphil-imperfect.
- Textual-critical note on הוּרַם vs. הֵרִים: the Masoretic pointing נִקֻּד gives Hophal hûram "was-taken-away" (agentless passive). The ETCBC/BHSA parser (reproduced above) tags the consonantal form as הרים with
Verb.Hophal.Perf.3ms, matching MT pointing. A long minority textual tradition (numerous medieval Hebrew MSS; see BHS apparatus and Collins 1993, Daniel Hermeneia 326–27) repoints as Hiphil hērîm "he-raised / he-took-away" — making the horn the overt subject of the verb. The two readings are morphologically indistinguishable in the unpointed text (both הרים), so the dispute is a vocalization-tradition dispute, not a consonantal-text dispute. Consequence: on MT-Hophal the tāmîḏ "was-removed" without the horn as grammatical agent (divine passive reading available); on Hiphil repointing the horn actively "took-away" the tāmîḏ. The parser follows MT pointing. - מִמֶּנּוּ "from him / by him" (v.11): Prep מִן + 3ms suffix. Two well-attested functions — (a) ablative of separation ("away from him"), matching Hophal hûram as impersonal-passive "the tāmîḏ was-removed from his domain," (b) personal-agent marker with passive verb ("by him" as agent of passive — GKC §121f, Joüon-Muraoka §132e list מִן with passive verbs as one of Hebrew's ways of marking agent, though the more common marker is bə- or lə-). On reading (b) the horn becomes the logical (semantic) agent even while the verb is grammatically passive. KJV "by him" adopts (b); ESV/NRSV "from him" adopts (a).
- Significance: the Hophal cluster hûram / hušlaḵ positions the sanctuary-assault at a stylistic altitude distinct from v.10's active wayq narration — the grammar will not name who took the tāmîḏ away or who cast down the sanctuary-place. This restraint is a feature, not a bug: the divine passive reading is grammatically available (cross-link Greek divine-passive for the cross-testament phenomenon), but so is the ambiguous-agent reading. What the grammar rules out is an unambiguous identification of the horn as the overt grammatical agent of removal.
- Cross-links: word study H7311-ruwm (rûm "be-high"), word study H7993-shalak (šālaḵ "throw / cast"), word study H8548-tamid (tāmîḏ "continual"), word study H4720-miqdash (miqdāš "sanctuary"), word study H4349-makon (māḵôn "established-place").
4. מְכוֹן מִקְדָּשׁוֹ — Two-member construct chain with 3ms suffix on absolute (v.11)¶
- Chain: məḵôn (Noun.ms.Cst of מָכוֹן H4349 "fixed-place / established-site / foundation") bound to miqdāšô (Noun.ms.Abs of מִקְדָּשׁ H4720 "sanctuary" + 3ms pronominal suffix -ô "his").
- Genitival relation: məḵôn is the construct head; miqdāš is the governed absolute. Classical BH requires the possessive suffix on the absolute (last) member even when it semantically binds the whole chain — GKC §127a, §128a, Joüon-Muraoka §140. So the English rendering is "place of his-sanctuary" ≈ "his sanctuary's place" / "the site-of-his-sanctuary."
- Antecedent of the 3ms suffix: BH resolution rules prefer the nearest eligible 3ms referent. The eligible 3ms antecedents in v.11 are (a) שַׂר "prince" (Noun.ms), (b) the implicit 3ms subject of higdîl (the horn, but parsed f.s. elsewhere in the vision — qeren is feminine; the 3ms of higdîl is the exception explained below), (c) the 3ms of mimmennû. The horn is grammatically f.s. throughout Dan 8 (v.5 qeren f.s., v.9 tigdal 3fs, v.10 tigdal/tappēl/tirməsēm 3fs, v.12 tinnāṯēn/tašlēḵ/ʿāśəṯāh/hiṣlîḥāh 3fs); the 3ms of higdîl in v.11 has been variously explained as (i) agreement with the (masculine) person behind the symbol (Theodotion and medieval commentators), (ii) constructio ad sensum with śar in proximity, or (iii) an impersonal "it magnified" — see Collins 1993, Daniel 333. The nearest 3ms antecedent in the clause chain for the suffix on miqdāšô is שַׂר־הַצָּבָא "Prince of the host" (Noun.ms, explicitly 3ms), which v.11's clause 1 has just fronted into focus position. The 3ms suffix is therefore grammatically bound to the heavenly śar; "his sanctuary" = the Prince's sanctuary.
- Significance: this is the load-bearing grammatical point of the passage for the heavenly-sanctuary thesis. The construct-chain + 3ms-suffix architecture does not permit a reading in which the sanctuary belongs to the horn (the horn is f.s. throughout the vision's verb-agreement); the suffix's only eligible 3ms antecedent in the near discourse is the heavenly Prince. Combined with construct chain #1 ṣəḇāʾ haš-šāmayim (host of the heavens), the spatial vector of the passage is upward into heaven, and the sanctuary that gets "cast down" is syntactically bound to that heavenly register.
- Cross-links: word study H8269-sar (śar "prince / chief"), TR-sar-archon (LXX/NT translation ἄρχων), word study H4720-miqdash (miqdāš), word study H4349-makon (māḵôn — same construct-chain idiom at Exo 15:17, 1 Ki 8:13, Psa 89:15, 97:2 — "fixed-place of thy dwelling/throne").
5. תִּנָּתֵן — Niphal imperfect 3fs of נתן: divine passive "was-given-over" (v.12)¶
- Form: tinnāṯēn (Verb.Niphal.Impf.3fs of נתן H5414). Niphal morphology: תִּ־ prefix + נָ־ infix + stem + afformative; Niphal of נתן is the standard passive "be-given." The imperfect tense-form in this WXYq clause functions iteratively / progressively / past-in-prophetic-vision ("was [repeatedly/continually] given over"), not as a simple future — a register typical of vision-description (cross-link qal-imperfect §3 on imperfect aspectual range).
- Divine-passive function: Niphal is Hebrew's default passive-of-Qal. In contexts like this where no overt agent is supplied, the form regularly carries divine-passive / theological-passive force — the unnamed agent is understood to be God or the divine council. Parallel: the Greek NT's ἐδόθη / ἐπιτραπῇ pattern in Revelation (Rev 6:2, 4, 8; 13:5, 7, 14–15) is the direct LXX-calque of this Hebrew Niphal-of-nāṯan. Cross-links stem-niphal, niphal-imperfect-divine-denial, divine-passive, aorist-passive-indicative.
- Subject of tinnāṯēn: צָבָא ṣāḇāʾ "host" (Noun.ms.Abs) — fronted and topicalized in WXYq slot. But note: the verb is 3fs tinnāṯēn, not 3ms. ṣāḇāʾ is morphologically ambiguous for gender (standardly m, but occasionally takes f. agreement when construed as a collective abstract; GKC §122s, §145b). The 3fs agreement here aligns ṣāḇāʾ with the continuous 3fs verb-chain of the horn-referent (v.10 tigdal/tappēl/tirməsēm; v.12 cl.2–4 tašlēḵ/ʿāśəṯāh/hiṣlîḥāh). Several commentators read ṣāḇāʾ in v.12 as referring not to the heavenly host of v.10 but to "an [additional] host [given to the horn]," hence KJV supplies "[him]" in brackets (cf. BDB ṣāḇāʾ §1.b, Collins 1993 Daniel 333–34). The grammar allows both: (a) the heavenly host is given over (passive handed-over into the horn's power), (b) an army is given over (i.e. appointed) against the tāmîḏ.
- ʿal-hat-tāmîḏ + bə-p̄āšaʿ (v.12 cl.1 adjuncts):
- עַל can mean "against" (hostile direction) or "together-with / in-addition-to" (accompaniment — BDB ʿal II.1.e, GKC §119aa). Reading 1: "a host was given over against the tāmîḏ through/by transgression." Reading 2: "a host was given over together with the tāmîḏ in transgression." Reading 1 construes the tāmîḏ as the target of assault; reading 2 construes it as co-victim.
- בְּ־פָשַׁע "in/by/through transgression" (Prep bə- + Noun.ms.Abs pešaʿ H6588). The bə- is the classical ambiguity — (a) instrumental/causal bə- ("by means of / because of transgression" — the transgression is the cause of the handover), (b) circumstantial bə- ("in [a state of] transgression" — the handover takes place in a condition of transgression), (c) partitive-modal bə- ("with transgression" — transgression attends the handover). GKC §119i–o. Combined with reading 1 of ʿal, the most common English rendering is "against the daily [sacrifice] because of transgression" (KJV, NKJV, NASB, ESV, NRSV).
- Cross-links: word study H5414-nathan (nāṯan "give"), word study H6588-pesha (pešaʿ "transgression/rebellion"), word study H6635-tsaba (ṣāḇāʾ "host / army"), word study H8548-tamid (tāmîḏ "continual").
6. וְתַשְׁלֵךְ אֱמֶת אַרְצָה — Hiphil active casting-down of truth (v.12 cl.2)¶
- Form: tašlēḵ (Verb.Hiphil.Impf.3fs of שׁלך H7993 "throw / cast") + ʾĕmeṯ (Noun.fs.Abs אֱמֶת H571 "truth / trustworthiness / faithfulness") + ʾarṣāh (Noun.s.Abs + locative -āh "to-the-ground").
- Voice contrast with v.11: this is the matching active Hiphil to v.11's passive Hophal hušlaḵ. Same root (שׁלך), same surface gesture (casting down, with ʾarṣāh locative in both), opposite voice. The grammar arranges a deliberate voice-chiasm:
- v.10: active Hiphil tappēl + ʾarṣāh (horn casts down host)
- v.11: passive Hophal hušlaḵ (sanctuary-place is cast down, agent unnamed)
- v.12: active Hiphil tašlēḵ + ʾarṣāh (horn casts down truth)
- The root שׁלך brackets the passage like a refrain, shifting voice at the hinge of v.11's passive cluster.
- Cross-links: word study H7993-shalak (šālaḵ), TR-emeth-aletheia (ʾĕmeṯ → LXX/NT ἀλήθεια).
7. וְעָשְׂתָה וְהִצְלִיחָה — The weqatal success-pair (v.12 cl.3–4)¶
- Forms: ʿāśəṯāh (Verb.Qal.Perf.3fs of עשׂה H6213 "do / make / act") + hiṣlîḥāh (Verb.Hiphil.Perf.3fs of צלח H6743 "prosper / succeed / advance"). Both with initial וְ conjunction — parsed as weqatal chain (waw + perfect, WQt0 clause type).
- Weqatal function in Domain D: in discursive/prospective contexts the weqatal propagates modal/iterative force from a preceding yiqtol (here clause 2's tašlēḵ). The force is "and [she will/did] keep doing-and-prospering" — open-ended iterative-continuous action without fixed temporal endpoint. Cross-link weqatal-legal-imperatival for the related Deuteronomic function (different pragmatic force, same morphology).
- Parallel with Dan 8:24: identical Hiphil of צלח + Qal of עשׂה occurs in inverted order at v.24 wə-hiṣlîaḥ wə-ʿāśâ (3ms there — the horn-king now grammatically singular-masculine at the interpretation layer). The formulaic pair brackets the vision and its angelic interpretation. Cross-link dan-8-23-25.
- Cross-links: word study H6213-asah, TR-asah-poieo, word study H6743-tsalach, TR-tsalach-euodoo.
The Sequential Destruction Cascade — Syntactic Ladder¶
The grammar organizes the horn's action as a five-rung vertical ladder, each rung marked by a specific clause-type / verb-stem signature:
| Rung | Target | Verse | Verb(s) | Voice/stem |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | ṣəḇāʾ haš-šāmayim (heavenly host) | 8:10 | tigdal / tappēl / tirməsēm | Qal wayq + Hiphil wayq (active causer) |
| 2 | śar-haṣ-ṣāḇāʾ (Prince of host) | 8:11a | higdîl | Hiphil perf (self-magnification, reflexive-internal causative) |
| 3 | hat-tāmîḏ (continual [offering]) | 8:11b | hûram | Hophal perf (agentless / divine passive) |
| 4 | məḵôn miqdāšô (place of HIS sanctuary) | 8:11c | hušlaḵ | Hophal perf (agentless / divine passive) |
| 5 | ʾĕmeṯ (truth) | 8:12b | tašlēḵ | Hiphil impf (active casting-down) |
Three observations fall out of the grammar:
- The two passive-Hophal rungs (3 and 4) flank the Prince rung (2) — exactly the point at which the text refuses to name the horn as grammatical agent. The Hophal is not an accidental stylistic choice; it is the voice Hebrew uses to describe action-without-named-agent. The vision narrates the outcome (removal, casting-down) without subjecting the heavenly Prince's tāmîḏ and sanctuary-place to direct horn-agency at the surface-syntax level.
- The two Hiphil active rungs (1 and 5) bracket the Hophal middle — the horn is unambiguously Hiphil-active causer against the host (rung 1) and against truth (rung 5). These are the horn's unambiguous direct assaults at the syntactic surface.
- Rung 2 is the hinge — higdîl "he-magnified-himself" is the horn's only unambiguous active verb against the Prince, and it is reflexive-internal-causative, not transitive — the horn's action is self-exaltation, not direct attack. The claim against the Prince is ontological ("as-high-as the Prince"), not physical.

Identified Library Gaps¶
- stem-hophal.md — no canonical Hophal entry yet; v.11 has two consecutive Hophal perfects (hûram, hušlaḵ) and is a prime candidate passage for illustrating the Hophal/Hiphil voice pair. Candidate follow-on grammar-reference entry.
- locative-he-directional.md — the ʾarṣāh "to-the-ground" suffix appears 2× in the passage (v.10, v.12) and is a productive BH feature without a canonical entry. Candidate follow-on.
- stem-passive-cluster-agentless-action.md — the v.11 Hophal + v.12 Niphal cluster is a textbook case of agentless-passive rhetoric; a canonical entry would unify divine-passive discussion across Niphal / Hophal / Pual.
