WG: Covenant Loyalty¶
Overview¶
The Hebrew covenant-loyalty concept centers on checed (H2617) and its network of closely paired words. These terms describe the faithful, compassionate, and truthful commitment that characterizes God's relationship with his covenant people and that he requires of them toward one another.

Relationships¶
Shared Roots¶
- checed (H2617) and chaciyd (H2623) — both from root חסד (H2616): checed is the abstract quality, chaciyd is the person who embodies it
- emeth (H571) and emunah (H530) — both from root אמן (H539): emeth emphasizes stability/truth, emunah emphasizes constancy/fidelity

LXX Overlaps (shared Greek targets)¶
| Hebrew Words | Shared Greek | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| checed + emeth + rachamiym + emunah | all → ἔλεος (G1656) | Greek collapses four distinct Hebrew concepts into one "mercy" word |
| emeth + emunah | both → ἀλήθεια (G225) | Greek conflates "truth" and "faithfulness" |
| emeth + emunah | both → πίστις (G4102) | Both map to "faith/faithfulness" |
| rachamiym + checed | both → οἰκτιρμός (G3628) | "Pity/compassion" |
This LXX convergence means that when NT authors write "mercy" (eleos) or "truth" (aletheia), they may be echoing any of several Hebrew distinctions that Greek has flattened.
Roles in the Concept¶
- Core quality: checed (חֶסֶד) — the faithful, loyal, merciful commitment itself
- Reliability dimension: emeth (אֶמֶת) — the truth/stability that makes checed dependable
- Constancy dimension: emunah (אֱמוּנָה) — the steadfastness that sustains checed over time
- Emotional dimension: rachamiym (רַחֲמִים) — the visceral compassion that accompanies checed
- Gracious action: chanan (חָנַן) — the concrete act of showing favour/mercy
- Relational framework: beriyth (בְּרִית) — the covenant from which checed obligation arises
- Character type: chaciyd (חָסִיד) — the person who embodies checed
