WG: Bridegroom / Wedding¶
Overview¶
The NT wedding cluster centers on a groom–bride–chamber triad (νυμφίος / νύμφη / νυμφών) paired with the generic marriage vocabulary (γαμέω, γάμος) and the technical term for going out to meet an approaching dignitary (ἀπάντησις). Together they carry both literal wedding scenes (John 2) and the eschatological picture of Christ coming to claim his people.

Relationships¶
Shared Roots¶
- νυμφίος (G3566), νύμφη (G3565), νυμφών (G3567) — all derived from the νυμφ- stem (originally "veiled one"). Together they form the groom/bride/chamber triad.
- γαμέω (G1060) and γάμος (G1062) share the γαμ- stem (act vs. event).
Co-occurrence (appear in same verses)¶
| Word A | Word B | Shared Verses | Typical Context |
|---|---|---|---|
| νυμφίος | νυμφών | 3 | "children of the bridechamber" sayings (Mat 9:15; Mar 2:19; Luk 5:34) — disciples as attendants of the groom |
| νυμφίος | νύμφη | 2 | bride/bridegroom pairing (Jhn 3:29; Rev 18:23) — the classic prophetic couple |
| νυμφίος | ἀπάντησις | 2 | "going out to meet the bridegroom" in the ten-virgins parable (Mat 25:1, 6) |
| νυμφίος | γάμος | 1 | the groom enters the wedding feast (Mat 25:10) |
| νυμφίος | γαμέω | 0 | — no direct verse overlap: gameō describes the act; nymphios names the role |
The other pairings (γαμέω/γάμος, νύμφη/νυμφών, etc.) produce zero shared verses in the NT, which is itself diagnostic: these words cover adjacent but non-overlapping stretches of the wedding scene.
Hebrew Sources (shared bridges)¶
| Hebrew Source | Strong's | Bridges To | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| כַּלָּה (kallâh) | H3618 | G3565 (28x, score 32.04); G3566 (7x, score 19.34) | The dominant "bride" source; pulls the groom term along through prophetic pairings |
| חָתָן (châthân) | H2860 | G3566 (9x, score 23.71); G3565 (7x, score 16.95) | The dominant "bridegroom" source; also reaches νύμφη through the frequent Jer 7:34 / 16:9 / 25:10 / 33:11 formula |
Both Hebrew words bridge into both Greek nouns — the prophetic pair חָתָן/כַּלָּה sits behind the NT νυμφίος/νύμφη pairing. The other group members (νυμφών, γαμέω, γάμος, ἀπάντησις) do not carry significant Hebrew-source PMI signal through the LXX — they are Greek-native ways of framing the scene.
Roles in the Concept¶
- Groom: νυμφίος (G3566) — the arriving figure whose presence defines the feast
- Bride: νύμφη (G3565) — the counterpart who awaits and receives him
- Chamber: νυμφών (G3567) — the physical setting; "sons of the bridechamber" are the groom's attendants
- Act of marrying: γαμέω (G1060) — the verb of wedding (either sex)
- Event / feast: γάμος (G1062) — the wedding celebration itself
- Meeting: ἀπάντησις (G529) — the formal going-out to welcome the approaching groom (also used in 1 Thess 4:17 for meeting the Lord)
