Grammar Analysis: Jeremiah 25:11-12 + 29:10 — The Seventy-Year Babylonian Captivity¶
Summary¶
Jeremiah's seventy-year Babylonian captivity prophecy (Jer 25:11-12; 29:10; cf. 2 Chr 36:21; Dan 9:2) is a CONTROL CASE for the day-for-year question. It is a prophetic time-prediction that is NOT day-for-year. The grammar, genre, and reception history all converge on literal years.
Four reinforcing signals:
1. Plain šānāh — the word "year" appears four times across these verses as a straight accusative-of-duration with the numeral šiḇʿîm ("seventy"). There is no yôm laššānāh ("a day for a year") declaration anywhere in the context.
2. No apocalyptic genre markers — no vision, no symbolic beast, no angelic interpreter, no numbered period riding on a symbolic time-unit.
3. No seal-command — contrast Dan 8:26; 12:4, 9 where the text flags its own temporal opacity.
4. Daniel reads it literally (Dan 9:2) — while exiled in Babylon Daniel computes mispar ha-šānîm ("the number of the years") from Jeremiah's scrolls as the actual years Jerusalem would lie desolate, and prays at the terminal end of that period. His reading is canonically authoritative for how the prophecy was meant to function.
The 70 years are fulfilled within one lifetime at the literal-year scale: 605 BC (first deportation) → 539 BC (Cyrus decree) ≈ 66-70 years depending on reckoning; or 586 BC (temple destruction) → 516 BC (temple rebuilt) = 70 years exactly. Either terminus works at literal scale; no year-day expansion is required or grammatically invited.
This entry supplies the hermeneutic baseline: day-for-year is genre-triggered, not universally applied to every prophetic time-reference. The very prophet (Ezekiel) who declared the yôm laššānāh rule at Ezek 4:6 uses plain šānāh literally at Ezek 29:11-13 for Egypt's forty-year desolation. Jeremiah's seventy years operate the same way: ordinary calendrical speech in a non-apocalyptic oracle.

Clause Structure¶
Jeremiah 25:11 — two coordinated weqatal clauses¶
- Clause 1 (WQtX, quotation domain): wə-hāyəṯāh kol-hā-ʾāreṣ haz-zōʾṯ lə-ḥorbāh lə-šammāh
- Pred:
hāyəṯāh| Subj:kol hā-ʾāreṣ haz-zōʾṯ| PreC:lə-ḥorbāh lə-šammāh - Clause 2 (WQtX, quotation domain): wə-ʿāḇəḏû hag-gôyim hā-ʾēlleh ʾeṯ-meleḵ Bāḇel šiḇʿîm šānāh
- Pred:
ʿāḇəḏû| Subj:hag-gôyim hā-ʾēlleh| Objc:ʾeṯ-meleḵ Bāḇel| Time:šiḇʿîm šānāh
The BHSA parser classifies šiḇʿîm šānāh explicitly as a Time adjunct of the predicate ʿāḇəḏû ("they shall serve"). Grammatically this is an accusative of temporal duration — the ordinary way Hebrew says "for X years." There is no trace of sign-act framing, no interpretive formula, no symbolic substitution. It is the same construction used of Jacob serving Laban "seven years" (Gen 29:20, 30), Israel's forty-year wilderness (Num 14:33-34 non-sign-act uses), etc.
Jeremiah 25:12 — apodosis with infinitive-construct temporal clause¶
- Clause 1: wə-hāyāh — formulaic "and it shall come to pass"
- Clause 2 (InfC): ḵi-məlōʾṯ šiḇʿîm šānāh — "when seventy years are fulfilled"
- Pred:
məlōʾṯ(Qal infinitive construct of מלא) | Subj:šiḇʿîm šānāh - Clause 3 (ZYq0): ʾep̄qōḏ ʿal-meleḵ Bāḇel… — "I will punish the king of Babylon…"
The kə + infinitive construct construction (ḵi-məlōʾṯ) is a standard Hebrew temporal clause: "at the fulfilling of…" / "when X is completed." The subject of the infinitive is šiḇʿîm šānāh — the seventy years themselves are what becomes "full" (מלא). This is the same verb used in 2 Chr 36:21 and Dan 9:2 to describe the seventy years being completed as literal calendar time.
Jeremiah 29:10 — lə-p̄î + infinitive construct¶
- Clause 1 (xQtX): kî ḵōh ʾāmar YHWH — messenger-formula
- Clause 2 (xYq0): kî lə-p̄î… ʾep̄qōḏ ʾeṯḵem — "for according to… I will visit you"
- Time:
lə-p̄î("according to the mouth of" / "in accordance with the measure of") - Clause 3 (InfC): məlōʾṯ lə-Bāḇel šiḇʿîm šānāh
- Pred:
məlōʾṯ| Cmpl:lə-Bāḇel| Subj:šiḇʿîm šānāh - Clause 4 (WQt0): wa-hăqîmōṯî ʿălêḵem ʾeṯ dəḇārî haṭ-ṭôḇ — "and I will establish my good word upon you"
- Clause 5 (InfC): lə-hāšîḇ ʾeṯḵem ʾel ham-māqôm haz-zeh — "to cause you to return to this place"
The idiom lə-p̄î məlōʾṯ ("according to the mouth of the fulfillment of") is an unusual but unambiguous construction. lə-p̄î is a prepositional idiom meaning "according to the measure of / in proportion to." Combined with məlōʾṯ ("the fulfilling/completing of"), the sense is: when the full measure of seventy years for Babylon has been completed. The emphasis is on quantitative completion — a literal exhausting of the seventy-year period — not on symbolic expansion.
Key Grammatical Features¶
1. šānāh (Noun.fs.Abs) — plain "year" with numeral¶
- Form: Feminine singular absolute noun, Strong's H8141 šānāh.
- Construction: The Hebrew idiom with round-decade numerals places the counted noun in the singular absolute (
šiḇʿîm šānāhliterally "seventy year"), standing as an accusative of temporal duration. - Significance: This is the ordinary, calendrical word for "year" in its plainest syntactic frame. There is no modifier, no appositional decoder, no
yôm("day") paired in substitution, no genitive relation linking it to a symbolic referent. - Contrast with Ezek 4:6: Ezekiel's sign-act declaration uses the explicit formula
yôm laššānāh yôm laššānāh("a day for a year, a day for a year") — a double-stamped interpretive rule that redefines the time-unit. Jeremiah has nothing like this. The absence is the datum. - Word study: H8141 shaneh
- Grammar reference: day-year-formula — documents the explicit formula that would be required to trigger day-for-year and shows it is absent here.
2. məlōʾṯ / mallōʾṯ (infinitive construct of מלא) — "fulfilling / completing"¶
- Form: Qal infinitive construct (
məlōʾṯ, Jer 25:12; 29:10) and Piel infinitive construct (mallōʾṯ, 2 Chr 36:21; Dan 9:2) of the root מלא ("be full, fill, complete"). - Function: In all four passages this verb governs
šiḇʿîm šānāh— the seventy years are the thing being completed. The semantic field is quantitative exhaustion of a measured period, not symbolic expansion. - Jer 25:12:
ḵi-məlōʾṯ šiḇʿîm šānāh— "when seventy years are fulfilled" - Jer 29:10:
lə-p̄î məlōʾṯ lə-Bāḇel šiḇʿîm šānāh— "according to the fulfilling of seventy years for Babylon" - 2 Chr 36:21:
lə-mallōʾṯ šiḇʿîm šānāh(Piel) — "to fulfill seventy years" - Dan 9:2:
lə-mallōʾṯ lə-ḥārəḇôṯ Yərûšālāim šiḇʿîm šānāh(Piel) — "to fulfill seventy years for the desolations of Jerusalem" - Significance: The verb demands a literal, countable terminus. You cannot "fill up" a symbolic unit — you fill up actual calendar time. The Piel intensifies the completion sense (2 Chr, Dan). This verbal framing is diagnostic: where Daniel uses מלא-Piel with
šānāh, he reads the number as arithmetic; where Daniel's own apocalyptic visions give time-numbers (Dan 8:14; 12:7), he is told the vision is sealed (Dan 8:26; 12:9) and receives no similar computational cue. - Word study: TR-male-pleroo
3. ʿāḇəḏû (Verb.Qal.Perf.3p) — concrete geopolitical servitude¶
- Form: Qal perfect 3rd-common-plural (here functioning as a weqatal future after the opening weqatal chain) from root עבד ("serve, work, labor").
- Significance: The verb denotes real political-military vassalage — the same root used of slaves, corvée labor, and tribute-paying nations. Its subject is
hag-gôyim hā-ʾēlleh("these nations") and its indirect object ismeleḵ Bāḇel("the king of Babylon"). This is not visionary or symbolic language; it is the vocabulary of imperial subjugation. - Significance for the day-year question: The genre is concrete geopolitical prophecy, not apocalyptic vision. Apocalyptic time-units ride on symbolic carriers (a little horn, a ram's horns, a visionary sequence); here the "time" sits on a plain historical verb describing nations paying tribute. There is nothing to symbolically decode.
4. rāṣəṯāh hā-ʾāreṣ ʾeṯ-šabbəṯôṯêhā (2 Chr 36:21) — the sabbatical-rest rationale¶
- Form:
rāṣəṯāh(Qal perfect 3fs from רצה, "pay off / satisfy / enjoy");šabbəṯôṯêhā(plural noun "her sabbaths" with 3fs suffix). - Construction: The land (feminine subject) "pays off" her sabbaths — meaning the accumulated unobserved sabbatical years (Lev 25; 26:34-35, 43) are now being compensated by an enforced rest.
kol-yəmê ha-šammāh šāḇāṯāh lə-mallōʾṯ šiḇʿîm šānāh— "all the days of the desolation she kept sabbath, to fulfill seventy years." - Significance: The Chronicler anchors the seventy years in Leviticus 26:34-35 — a land-rest arithmetic. Seventy sabbatical years (one every seven years) corresponds to 490 years of neglected sabbath-years. This is a calendrical, not symbolic, calculation. It is impossible to sustain a day-for-year reading here: you cannot multiply sabbath-year debt by 360 without producing absurdities (25,200 sabbatical years ≈ 176,400 years of pre-exilic occupation).
- Significance for the day-year question: The Chronicler's inspired commentary fixes the denomination at literal years. Any hermeneutic that would convert Jeremiah's seventy into prophetic-day years (70×360 = 25,200 years) breaks the sabbath-debt rationale that the canon itself supplies.
5. mispar ha-šānîm (Dan 9:2) — Daniel's arithmetic reception¶
- Form: Construct chain:
mispar(ms.Cst "number-of") +ha-šānîm(fp.Abs "the years"). From the word study H4457 mispar — a quantitative numerical count. - Significance: In Dan 9:2 Daniel says he "understood by the books [ba-səp̄ārîm] the number of the years whereof the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah."
misparis the Hebrew word for an enumerated arithmetic count — inventories, census totals, troop musters. Daniel is computing the seventy years as calendar time and prays at its terminus (Dan 9:3-19). - Significance for the day-year question: This is the genre-distinction baseline. The same prophet who receives the apocalyptic 2300 "evenings-mornings" (Dan 8:14) — where he cannot understand the vision and is told it is sealed for the distant future (Dan 8:26-27) — here reads Jeremiah's seventy years without any symbolic operation, arithmetically, as literal years. Daniel himself treats the two kinds of prophetic time-reference differently. The canonical reader's distinction is the hermeneutic.

Absence of Day-for-Year Triggers¶
The day-for-year hermeneutic — where it is grammatically licensed — comes with identifiable textual signatures. None of them appear in Jer 25:11-12 / 29:10:
| Signature | Present in Num 14:34 / Ezek 4:6 | Present in Dan 8:14 / 9:24-27 | Present in Jer 25:11-12 / 29:10 |
|---|---|---|---|
Explicit yôm laššānāh declaration |
Yes (both) | No (but sign-act analog via covenantal frame) | No |
| Sign-act performance (prophet as symbol) | Yes (Ezek 4) | No | No |
| Apocalyptic vision context | No (sign-act) | Yes | No |
| Seal-command or concealment formula | No | Yes (Dan 8:26; 12:9) | No |
| Symbolic time-carrier (horn, beast, etc.) | No | Yes | No |
| Terminus beyond one lifetime | No (40 yr) | Yes (centuries–millennia) | No (one lifetime) |
| Canonical reader decodes symbolically | n/a | Yes (Dan 12:9 preserves the seal; cf. later apocalyptic tradition) | No — Daniel reads it literally (Dan 9:2) |
Jeremiah's seventy years hit zero of the hermeneutic triggers. They are ordinary calendrical time.
Fulfillment at Literal-Year Scale¶
Two conventional reckonings both land inside a seventy-year window:
| Terminus a quo | Terminus ad quem | Years |
|---|---|---|
| 605 BC — Nebuchadnezzar's first deportation (Dan 1:1-2) | 539 BC — Cyrus captures Babylon / decree (2 Chr 36:22-23; Ezra 1:1) | ~66-67 |
| 586 BC — destruction of the temple | 516 BC — second temple dedicated (Ezra 6:15) | ~70 |
| 605 BC — first deportation | 536 BC — return under Zerubbabel begins | ~69-70 |
Biblical authors themselves cite the prophecy as fulfilled: - 2 Chr 36:21-22 — explicit fulfillment notice at Cyrus's decree - Ezra 1:1 — repeats the citation: "that the word of the LORD by the mouth of Jeremiah might be fulfilled" - Dan 9:2 — Daniel praying at the terminal end of the seventy years - Zech 1:12; 7:5 — the 70-year period referenced as ongoing/just-concluded in real historical time
Every one of these fulfillment notices treats šiḇʿîm šānāh as literal calendar years. No canonical witness converts the number to prophetic-day years.

Hermeneutic Takeaway¶
Day-for-year is genre-triggered, not universally applied. Three cumulative lines of evidence here:
- Same-author control. Ezekiel declares the rule (Ezek 4:6) and then writes a plain-year forty-year prophecy (Ezek 29:11-13) using the same word. The author distinguishes.
- Canonical-reader control. Daniel — the premier apocalyptic seer in the Tanakh — receives sealed apocalyptic numbers (Dan 8:14; 12:7) and prays literally over a non-apocalyptic seventy (Dan 9:2). The reader distinguishes.
- Lexical control. The verb מלא ("fulfill, complete") with
šānāhfunctions arithmetically in Jer 25:12; 29:10; 2 Chr 36:21; Dan 9:2 — the years are counted, not decoded. The grammar itself distinguishes.
Jeremiah's seventy-year prophecy is therefore a clean baseline case: a prophetic time-prediction that is demonstrably NOT day-for-year. It establishes that the Bible does not uniformly symbolize prophetic time-references — and thereby validates the genre-triggered approach by which some prophetic time-numbers (e.g., Dan 8:14; 9:24-27; 12:7) are read at day-for-year scale while others (Jer 25:11-12; 29:10; Ezek 29:11-13) are read at literal scale.
The hermeneutic is supplied by the text, not imposed on it.
