WG: Marry¶
Overview¶
The NT vocabulary of marriage and divorce clusters around a small set of words that together define the institution, its dissolution, and its eschatological significance. γαμέω (the act of marrying) is the verbal core; the group also includes the noun for the institution (γάμος), the relational partner (γυνή), the dissolution (ἀπολύω), the consequent moral violation (μοιχάω), and the unmarried state (ἄγαμος).

- Matt 19:9 — [G1060 + G1135 + G630 + G3429] — the exception clause formulation

- 1 Cor 7:34 — [G1060 + G1135 + G22] — married vs. unmarried woman's undivided attention
Roles in the Concept¶
- Action: γαμέω (G1060) — the act of entering marriage
- Institution: γάμος (G1062) — the marriage relationship or wedding event itself
- Partner: γυνή (G1135) — the wife / woman as relational anchor
- Negation: ἄγαμος (G22) — the unmarried state (alpha-privative)
- Dissolution: ἀπολύω (G630) — divorce, the legal severance
- Violation: μοιχάω (G3429) — adultery, the moral consequence of wrongful remarriage
Eschatological Dimension¶
The group has a vertical axis: in the resurrection (Matt 22:30; Mark 12:25; Luke 20:34–35), γαμέω and γαμίζω (give in marriage) are both absent — marriage is a present-age institution. γάμος reappears only in the eschatological register of Rev 19:7–9 as the "marriage of the Lamb," where it is thoroughly redefined.
