WG: Interpret / Translate¶
Overview¶
The NT interpretation/translation concept is carried by a tight cognate family built on the root ἑρμηνεύω (hermēneúō), plus one semantically adjacent verb. All share the core idea of rendering meaning accessible — whether across languages, across testaments, or across the human/divine communication gap in charismatic speech.

Relationships¶
Shared Roots¶
- ἑρμηνεύω (G2059) is the root for the entire family:
- δι-ερμηνεύω (G1329) — δια- prefix adds thoroughness ("through")
- μεθ-ερμηνεύω (G3177) — μετα- prefix adds transfer ("across")
- δι-ερμηνευτής (G1328) — agent noun from G1329
- δυσ-ερμήνευτος (G1421) — δυσ- prefix negates ("difficult to")
- ἐπιλύω (G1956) has a separate root (λύω, "loose/solve") but occupies the same semantic space ("explain, expound")
Co-occurrence¶
No members co-occur in the same verse. This is characteristic of a complementary-distribution word family — NT authors select one member per context rather than combining them.
Functional Distribution¶
| Function | Primary Word | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Name translation | G2059 hermēneúō, G3177 methermēneúō | "Cephas, which is by interpretation a stone" |
| Scripture exposition | G1329 diermēneúō | Only Luke 24:27 — Jesus on Emmaus road |
| Tongues interpretation | G1329 diermēneúō | 4 of 6 occurrences (1 Cor 12–14) |
| Interpreter (person) | G1328 diermēneutḗs | "If there be no interpreter" (1 Cor 14:28) |
| Difficulty of interpretation | G1421 dysermḗneutos | "Hard to be uttered" (Heb 5:11) |
| Private explanation | G1956 epilýō | Jesus explaining parables (Mark 4:34) |
Roles in the Concept¶
- Root action: hermēneúō (G2059) — the basic act of rendering meaning in another language
- Intensified action: diermēneúō (G1329) — comprehensive, thorough interpretation working through a body of material
- Transfer action: methermēneúō (G3177) — carrying meaning across from one language to another
- Agent: diermēneutḗs (G1328) — the person who performs interpretation
- Negation: dysermḗneutos (G1421) — what resists interpretation
- Adjacent: epilýō (G1956) — resolving a specific interpretive knot
Key Distinctions¶
The three compound verbs divide the interpretation domain by scope:
- hermēneúō — point translation: single word or name rendered in another language
- methermēneúō — formulaic translation: "which being interpreted means..." (editorial gloss)
- diermēneúō — sustained interpretation: working through a text (Luke 24:27) or through an utterance (1 Cor 14) to make its full meaning accessible
The δια- prefix is the key differentiator — it signals comprehensiveness, not merely equivalence.
