Seal-Command Syntax in Daniel — סְתֹם / חֲתֹם (Qal Impv 2ms) and Paired Lexeme Syntax¶
Definition¶
A closely related pair of Hebrew verbs, סתם H5640 "stop up / shut up / hide" and חתם H2856 "seal / affix a seal," are deployed together in Daniel's apocalyptic closures (Dan 8:26; 9:24; 12:4, 9) in a fixed volitive construction — Qal imperative (or Qal infinitive construct of purpose, or Qal passive participle) + definite direct object + optional temporal limit ʿad ʿēṯ qēṣ ("until the time of the end"). The construction is a genre-marker of prophetic deferred-disclosure: the receiving prophet is ordered to package the vision so that it is retained intact yet inaccessible until a designated horizon.
- Simple shut-up command — sətōm + definite object (Dan 8:26): seal one lexeme, one object, no temporal limit expressed in the sealing verb itself (it is transferred to the explanatory kî lə-yāmîm rabbîm "for many days" clause).
- Dual shut-up + seal command — sətōm X wa-ḥăṯōm Y + ʿad ʿēṯ qēṣ (Dan 12:4): two coordinated Qal.Impv.2ms, two distinct objects (dəbārîm / sēper), explicit temporal end-boundary.
- Dual passive participle declaration — sətumîm wa-ḥăṯumîm + definite subject + ʿad ʿēṯ qēṣ (Dan 12:9): same lexeme pair rotated from active command to resultative-passive state; the sealing has already happened and persists.
- Infinitive-of-purpose sealing — lə- + ḥătōm + double object (Dan 9:24): the sealing is listed as one of six purpose-clauses governed by neḥtaḵ ("are determined") defining what the seventy weeks are for.
Form Recognition¶
- סתם (sātam) — root consonants ס‑ת‑ם; H5640; ETCBC gloss "stop up"; attested 13× canonically (Gen 26:15, 18; 2Kgs 3:19, 25; Neh 4:1; Psa 51:8; Ezek 28:3; Dan 8:26; 12:4; 12:9; 2Chr 32:3, 4, 30); Qal + one Piel cluster (Gen 26) + one Niphal (Neh 4:1); physical meaning = "stop up (a well, a water-source, a mouth)."
- חתם (ḥātam) — root consonants ח‑ת‑ם; H2856; ETCBC gloss "seal"; attested 27× canonically; Qal dominant with Piel (Job 24:16), Niphal (Esth 3:12; 8:8), Hiphil (Lev 15:3 bodily-flow sense) peripheral; physical meaning = "close with a seal / signet / bulla."
- Parser codes (for the Daniel cluster):

ETCBC tags these as
Ptcpwithout a separate passive feature; the u-vocalization + resultative sense identifies the passive reading.
Functions with Examples¶
1. Single-Lexeme Imperative: sətōm + definite object¶
| Reference | Hebrew | Parsing | KJV |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dan 8:26 | וְאַתָּה סְתֹם הֶחָזוֹן | Conj + PersPron.2ms + Verb.Qal.Impv.2ms סתם + Art + Noun.ms חָזוֹן | "shut thou up the vision; for [it shall be] for many days" |
Pragmatics: fronted subject pronoun wəʾattāh (GKC §135a emphatic) + bare Qal.Impv.2ms + article+object; no coordinating wə to a second verb; temporal limit carried by separate kî lə-yāmîm rabbîm causal clause ("because [it belongs] to many days").
2. Dual-Lexeme Imperative Chain: sətōm X wa-ḥăṯōm Y ʿad ʿēṯ qēṣ¶
| Reference | Hebrew | Parsing | KJV |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dan 12:4 | סְתֹם הַדְּבָרִים וַחֲתֹם הַסֵּפֶר עַד־עֵת קֵץ | Impv.2ms סתם + Art+Noun.mp + Conj+Impv.2ms חתם + Art+Noun.ms + Prep + Noun.s.Cst + Noun.ms | "shut up the words, and seal the book, [even] to the time of the end" |
Pragmatics: two Qal imperatives coordinated by consecutive wə- (wa-ḥăṯōm with patah under waw + šewaʾ — standard impv-chain pointing, not wayyiqtol — because an imperative cannot be wayyiqtol). Two objects distinguished by lexeme — dəbārîm (plural, the verbal content) bound to sātam, sēper (singular, the physical scroll) bound to ḥātam. Time-bound by construct-chain PP ʿad ʿēṯ qēṣ "until a time of end" (ʿēṯ fem.sg.Cst of עת H6256, qēṣ Noun.ms.Abs H7093).
3. Dual-Lexeme Passive Participle Declaration¶
| Reference | Hebrew | Parsing | KJV |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dan 12:9 | כִּי־סְתֻמִים וַחֲתֻמִים הַדְּבָרִים עַד־עֵת קֵץ | Conj + Verb.Qal.Ptcp.mp.Abs סתם + Conj + Verb.Qal.Ptcp.mp.Abs חתם + Art+Noun.mp + Prep + Noun.s.Cst + Noun.ms | "for the words [are] closed up and sealed till the time of the end" |
Same lexeme pair, rotated from active command to passive-resultative state. Plural ptc. agrees with plural dəbārîm (here the single sēper of 12:4 has been reabsorbed into the dəbārîm). Temporal PP ʿad ʿēṯ qēṣ is verbatim identical to 12:4 — the command has been executed; the state now obtains.
4. Infinitive of Purpose (Nested in Six-Clause Purpose Chain)¶
| Reference | Hebrew | Parsing | KJV |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dan 9:24 | וְלַחְתֹּם חָזוֹן וְנָבִיא | Conj + Prep lə- + Verb.Qal.InfCon חתם + Noun.ms + Conj + Noun.ms | "and to seal up the vision and prophecy" |
Parser-verified chain of six lə- + infinitives under the governing Niphal neḥtaḵ "is determined" (Dan 9:24 opening): ləḵallēʾ / lə-hātēm / lə-ḵappēr / lə-hāḇîʾ / la-ḥtōm / li-mšōaḥ. Only the fifth — laḥtōm — uses חתם (Qal). Object is a double noun phrase joined by wə-: ḥāzôn wə-nāḇîʾ (vision AND prophet / prophecy). The collocation ḥāzôn is the same object-lexeme as Dan 8:26, linking the two passages by recurring direct object.
5. Aramaic Sealing — Royal-Decree Register (Dan 6:18 [ET 6:17])¶
| Reference | Aramaic | Parsing | KJV |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dan 6:18 | וְחַתְמַהּ מַלְכָּא בְּעִזְקְתֵהּ | Conj + Verb.peal.Perf.3ms.+3fs חתם + Noun.ms king + Prep + Noun.fs.Abs.+3ms "seal-ring" | "the king sealed it with his own signet, and with the signet of his lords; that the purpose might not be changed" |
Same root חתם in the Aramaic section functions as legal-executive sealing — making a decree irrevocable ("that the purpose might not be changed"). The Qal/peal passive ptc. governs physical seal-ring instrumentality (bə-ʿizqəṯēh).
Contrast with Related Forms (Sealing Outside Daniel)¶
A. Isa 8:16 — ṣôr təʿûḏâ ḥăṯôm tôrâ (closest syntactic parallel to Dan 12:4)¶
| Reference | Hebrew | Parsing | KJV |
|---|---|---|---|
| Isa 8:16 | צוֹר תְּעוּדָה חֲתוֹם תּוֹרָה בְּלִמֻּדָי | Qal.Impv.2ms of צרר ("bind") + Noun.fs + Qal.Impv.2ms of חתם + Noun.fs + Prep+Noun.mp.+1s | "Bind up the testimony, seal the law among my disciples" |
Same paired-imperative shape as Dan 12:4, but the first verb is צרר (bind/wrap) rather than סתם (stop up), and there is no ʿad ʿēṯ qēṣ terminus. Isaiah's pair binds testimony into an accessible closed group (bə-limmuḏay, "among my disciples"); Daniel's pair consigns words to a future horizon. Same sealing verb חתם, different sealing destination.
B. Isa 29:11 — ha-sēp̄er he-ḥāṯûm (sealed-book topos)¶
| Reference | Hebrew | Parsing | KJV |
|---|---|---|---|
| Isa 29:11 | כְּדִבְרֵי הַסֵּפֶר הֶחָתוּם ... כִּי חָתוּם הוּא | Prep+Noun.mp.Cst + Art+Noun.ms + Art+Verb.Qal.Ptcp.ms.Abs חתם | "as the words of a book that is sealed ... for it [is] sealed" |
Anchors sēper ḥāṯûm as a formed topos before Daniel. Qal passive participle (identical morphology to Dan 12:9 but singular) used adjectivally with article. Sealed=illegible, even to the literate ("he saith, I cannot; for it is sealed"). This Isaianic background is presupposed by Daniel's sētōm ha-dəbārîm wə-ḥăṯōm ha-sēper.
C. Jer 32:10–14 — Legal Sealing of a Deed¶
| Reference | Hebrew | Parsing | KJV |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jer 32:10 | וָאֶכְתֹּב בַּסֵּפֶר וָאֶחְתֹּם וָאָעֵד עֵדִים | Qal.Wayq.1s of כתב + Qal.Wayq.1s of חתם + Hiph.Wayq.1s of עוד | "I subscribed the evidence, and sealed [it], and took witnesses" |
ḥātam deployed in first-person wayyiqtol narrative — legal-transactional register. Seal authenticates a document that is meant to be opened later in accordance with stipulated conditions (Jer 32:14 "put them in an earthen vessel, that they may continue many days"). Semantic overlap with Daniel on the time-deferred axis; contrast on the hiddenness axis (Jeremiah's deed is not shut up to prevent reading — it is sealed to prove authenticity when unsealed).
D. Rev 22:10 vs. Dan 12:4 — Antithetical Commands¶
| Reference | Text | Parsing | KJV |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rev 22:10 (Greek) | μὴ σφραγίσῃς τοὺς λόγους τῆς προφητείας τοῦ βιβλίου τούτου | μή + Aorist Subjunctive.2sg of σφραγίζω (Aor.Subj.2sg prohibition) + Acc.mp + Gen.fs + Gen.ns + Dem.Gen | "Seal not the sayings of the prophecy of this book: for the time is at hand" |
Rev 22:10 inverts Dan 12:4 morphologically (aorist-subjunctive prohibition mē sphragisēs in Greek ‖ positive Qal.Impv.2ms חֲתֹם in Hebrew) and semantically (the ʿēṯ qēṣ that was future for Daniel is declared ēngus estin "is at hand" for John). Same lexeme field (σφραγίζω being the LXX standard rendering of חתם — cf. LXX Dan 12:4 σφράγισον τὸ βιβλίον; Isa 29:11 ἐσφραγισμένου).
Semantic Distinction: סתם vs. חתם¶
| Axis | סתם (H5640) | חתם (H2856) |
|---|---|---|
| Prototype physical action | stop up a well / block a water source (Gen 26:15, 18; 2 Kgs 3:19, 25; 2 Chr 32:3–4, 30) | affix a seal with signet-ring to a scroll, letter, decree (1 Kgs 21:8; Jer 32:10, 44; Esth 3:12; 8:8; Dan 6:18; Neh 10:1–2) |
| Agent instrumentality | physical plugging / filling | stamp/impression of seal-ring (ʿizqāh / ḥôṯām) |
| Effect on access | blocks — nothing passes in or out | authenticates + closes — object remains intact, but opening = breaking the seal |
| Effect on content | content becomes unreadable / unreachable (source of water becomes unavailable) | content is protected from tampering; legally binding on reading |
| Who may reverse | the same stopper-up (2 Chr 32 Hezekiah stops; Jer 2:13 broken-cistern inversion) | authorized seal-holder only (Dan 6:18 "that the purpose might not be changed"); Rev 5 "who is worthy to open the book and loose the seals thereof?" |
| Metaphor extension in Daniel | the words are shut up — cognitive inaccessibility | the book is sealed — document-integrity until a rightful opener |
Dan 12:4 uses both because the two verbs operate on different objects with different functions: sətōm ha-dəbārîm ("make the words inaccessible") + ḥăṯōm ha-sēper ("lock the book until its authorized opener"). Dan 8:26 uses only sətōm because the object is ha-ḥāzôn (the vision-event as cognitive content) — there is no physical scroll-document yet to receive a seal. Dan 9:24 uses only ḥātam because the infinitive-of-purpose frame is sketching what the seventy weeks accomplish — they authenticate/ratify ḥāzôn wə-nāḇîʾ by bringing them to determined fulfillment (the ratification sense of חתם, cf. Dan 6:18 irrevocability), not by making them inaccessible.
The ʿad ʿēṯ qēṣ Terminus¶
- Construct chain: Prep עַד H5704 + Noun.s.Cst עֵת H6256 + Noun.ms.Abs קֵץ H7093 — "unto time-of end."
- Distribution: 5× in Daniel in the sealed-vision strand (Dan 8:17; 11:35; 12:4; 12:9; cf. Dan 12:6 עַד מָתַי קֵץ variant "how long until the end").
- The terminus is asymmetric to the command — a sealing command without ʿad ʿēṯ qēṣ (Isa 8:16 "among my disciples") defers to an addressable group; a sealing command with ʿad ʿēṯ qēṣ (Dan 12:4) defers to a calendrical horizon. Dan 8:26 uses the semantic equivalent in declarative form (kî lə-yāmîm rabbîm "because [it is] for many days"); this is not the ʿēṯ qēṣ construct-chain but functions as its informal variant.
- Syntactic scope: in Dan 12:4 ʿad ʿēṯ qēṣ modifies the entire sətōm … wa-ḥăṯōm conjoined verbal phrase (not only the nearer verb). In Dan 12:9 it modifies the sətumîm wa-ḥăṯumîm resultative state.
Common Verbs in the Sealing Field¶
| Verb | Strong's | ETCBC gloss | Dominant stem | Total occ. | Daniel occ. |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| סתם | H5640 | stop up | Qal | 13× | 3 (8:26; 12:4; 12:9) |
| חתם | H2856 | seal | Qal | 27× | 4 (6:18 Aram.; 9:24; 12:4; 12:9) |
| צרר | H6887 | wrap/bind | Qal | — (broader) | 0 (Isa 8:16 parallel) |
| נֶחְתַּךְ | H2852 | be determined | Niphal | 1× (Dan 9:24 only) | 1 (governs the sealing infinitives) |
