The "presence" translation (2 Cor 10:10; Phil 2:12) highlights the literal sense — being physically present.

Semantic Categories¶
1. The Return of Christ at the End of the Age (Eschatological Parousia)¶
The dominant use — Christ's final return to judge and gather his people: - Matt 24:3 — "what shall be the sign of thy coming, and of the end of the world?" - Matt 24:27 — "as the lightning cometh out of the east…so shall also the coming of the Son of man be" - 1 Thess 4:15 — "we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent them which are asleep" - 2 Pet 3:12 — "Looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God"
2. Sanctification and Accountability at His Coming¶
Parousia is the moment of presentation before Christ — moral preparedness is tied to it: - 1 Thess 3:13 — "stablish your hearts unblameable in holiness before God…at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ with all his saints" - 1 Thess 5:23 — "your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ" - 1 John 2:28 — "abide in him; that, when he shall appear, we may have confidence, and not be ashamed before him at his coming" - 1 Cor 15:23 — "Christ the firstfruits; afterward they that are Christ's at his coming"
3. Denial and Scoffing of the Parousia¶
Parousia as a contested theological claim — opponents deny it: - Matt 24:37–39 — "as the days of Noe were, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be…they knew not until the flood came" - 2 Pet 3:4 — "Where is the promise of his coming? for since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were" - 2 Thess 2:1–3 — caution against false claims that the parousia has already occurred
4. Physical Presence / Personal Arrival of a Messenger¶
Used without eschatological force for bodily presence or personal visit: - 1 Cor 16:17 — "I am glad of the coming of Stephanas and Fortunatus and Achaicus" - 2 Cor 7:6 — "God…comforted us by the coming of Titus" - Phil 1:26 — "your rejoicing may be more abundant in Jesus Christ for me by my coming to you again" - Phil 2:12 — "not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence" (parousia vs. apousia)
5. The Counterfeit Parousia of the Antichrist¶
One occurrence deliberately mirrors Christ's parousia with Satan's: - 2 Thess 2:8–9 — "the Lord shall consume [the Wicked] with…the brightness of his coming (v.8); [Even him,] whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders (v.9)"

Hebrew Source¶
παρουσία does not appear in the Septuagint (LXX). It is a pure NT Greek word with no direct Hebrew equivalent. Its background is Hellenistic royal protocol — the technical term for the official visit of a king, emperor, or deity to a city.
The closest Hebrew concept is בּוֹא (bôwʼ, H935) — to come, to arrive — which the LXX translates with ἔρχομαι (G2064), not parousía. See WG-came.md for the full "coming" word group that includes both H935 and its NT Greek equivalents.
