WG: Sparing, Withholding, Compassion

Overview

A cluster of Hebrew verbs and a Greek counterpart that together map the biblical concept of refraining from warranted harm — sparing a life, withholding a blow, feeling tender-mercy that stays the hand, or committed-loyalty that refuses to abandon. The Hebrew words range from action-restraint (châsak, withhold) through pity-visual (chûs, eye-pity) to enacted-mercy (châmal, spare) to visceral-tenderness (râcham, womb-mercy) to covenant-loyalty (chéseḏ). Greek pheídomai collapses the first three into one lexeme; Greek eleéō / éleos picks up the last two.

Relationships

Shared Roots

No shared roots among the Hebrew members — this is a semantic cluster, not a morphological one. Cheseḏ is sometimes linked etymologically to a root meaning "to bow / be gracious," but is unrelated to the other members. Râcham derives from רֶחֶם (womb).

Co-occurrence (pairwise verse overlap)

Word A Word B Shared Verses Typical Context
H2550 châmal H2347 chûs 10 The stereotyped "thine eye shall not spare (chûs), neither will I have pity (châmal)" — Ezekiel and Deuteronomy
H2550 châmal H7355 râcham 2 Triple-negation judgment oracles (Jer 13:14; 21:7) — "I will not pity, nor spare, nor have mercy"
H2347 chûs H7355 râcham 3 Isa 13:18 warrior-mercilessness; mercy-withheld contexts
H7355 râcham H2617 chéseḏ 3 Isa 54:8 — "with everlasting kindness (chéseḏ) will I have mercy (râcham) on thee"
H2347 chûs H2617 chéseḏ 1 Neh 13:22
H2550 châmal H2820 châsak 0 No direct overlap — they are conceptual synonyms but distribute across different verses
H2550 châmal H2617 chéseḏ 0 No direct overlap

Triple-Member Passages

Verse Members Significance
Jer 13:14 châmal + chûs + râcham "I will not pity (châmal), nor spare (chûs), nor have mercy (râcham), but destroy them" — the complete merciless-judgment triad
Jer 21:7 châmal + chûs + râcham "he shall not spare (châmal) them, neither have pity (chûs), nor have mercy (râcham)" — same triad, same construction

These two verses are the densest concentration of the cluster in Scripture, and they establish the stereotyped merciless-judgment formula. The negation of all three verbs together is used when YHWH declares that the full spectrum of mercy has been withdrawn.

LXX / Greek Bridge Points

Greek Word Bridges Hebrew Members Notes
φείδομαι (G5339) châmal (33x), chûs (23x), châsak (19x) Primary Greek convergence point for the "spare/withhold" sub-cluster. Collapses three Hebrew distinctions into one.
ἐλεέω (G1653) râcham (27x), chûs (8x), châmal (8x) Primary Greek convergence for the "have mercy/compassion" side.
ἔλεος (G1656) chéseḏ (203x), râcham (8x) Noun equivalent — overwhelmingly renders chéseḏ.
ὀφθαλμός (G3788) chûs (16x), châmal (8x) Renders the "eye" in the stereotyped "eye shall spare/pity" idiom.

Greek conflation effect: Hebrew distinguishes châmal (withhold destruction, enact sparing) from chûs (eye-pity, look with compassion) from châsak (hold back generally). LXX pheídomai absorbs all three. Hebrew distinguishes râcham (visceral tenderness) from chéseḏ (covenant loyalty). Greek eleos / eleéō blends them. NT readers working from Greek alone lose the fine-grained Hebrew psychology of mercy.

Roles in the Concept

  • Act of withholding the blow (transitive): H2550 châmal — the specific enactment against a judgment backdrop
  • Broader restraint of hand/word/rod: H2820 châsak — general withholding, not limited to mercy
  • Visual-emotional response prompting restraint: H2347 chûs — "the eye pities," the felt response
  • Visceral / maternal tenderness: H7355 râcham — the womb-deep compassion
  • Covenant-loyal steadfastness: H2617 chéseḏ — the faithful-kindness that refuses to abandon
  • Greek collapsing-point: G5339 pheídomai (action-side), with eleos covering the mercy-side

Key Passages Where Multiple Group Words Appear Together

  • Deut 13:8 — "neither shall thine eye pity (chûs) him, neither shalt thou spare (châmal), neither shalt thou conceal (châsak-equivalent)"
  • Isa 54:8 — "with everlasting kindness (chéseḏ) will I have mercy (râcham) on thee" — the positive-mercy counterpart pairing
  • Isa 13:18 — "they shall have no pity (chûs)... shall not spare (châmal was parallel in LXX)... their eye shall not spare (châmal elsewhere)" — the full cluster in a single oracle
