Prophetic Double Address and Corporate Personification (Hebrew)¶
Definition¶
Prophetic discourse can address a ruler, city, kingdom, or representative figure in adjacent or overlapping speech units. Hebrew grammar often uses singular address for a corporate entity and can shift between city, ruler, dynasty, and people without requiring the interpreter to flatten all referents into one level.
- Double address - adjacent oracle headings address different title-forms or targets within one larger judgment complex.
- Corporate personification - a city/nation is addressed with singular pronouns and verbs as though it were one person.
- Representative ruler grammar - a king/prince can stand grammatically for a polity, dynasty, or office.
- Referent layering - grammar may permit multiple levels, but it does not decide their theological hierarchy.
Form Recognition¶
- Singular vocative or proper-name city address:
צִידֹון,צֹר,בַּת־צִיּוֹן. - Singular pronominal suffixes for cities/nations:
+2fs,+3fs,+2ms,+3ms. - Ruler/title construct chains:
נְגִיד צֹר,מֶלֶךְ צֹור,מֶלֶךְ בָּבֶל. - New unit markers:
וַיְהִי דְבַר־יְהוָה,כֹּה אָמַר, imperatives to speak/prophesy/lament. - Recognition of corporate shift requires tracking agreement, suffix gender/number, and oracle headings together.
Functions with Examples¶
1. Adjacent Ruler Titles in One Oracle Complex¶
| Reference | Heading | Parsing | Function |
|---|---|---|---|
| Eze 28:2 | לִנְגִיד צֹר |
Prep + Noun.ms.Cst + PropN | Direct oracle to prince/chief of Tyre |
| Eze 28:12 | עַל־מֶלֶךְ צֹור |
Prep + Noun.ms.Cst + PropN | Lament over king of Tyre |
The repeated word-of-YHWH formula at 28:1 and 28:11 separates the two headings while the shared Tyre proper name keeps them in one larger Tyre complex.
2. City as Feminine Singular Addressee¶
| Reference | Form | Parsing | Function |
|---|---|---|---|
| Eze 28:21 | עָלֶיהָ |
Prep.+3fs | Sidon as feminine city object of prophecy |
| Eze 28:22 | עָלַיִךְ |
Prep.+2fs | Direct address: "against you" (Sidon) |
| Eze 28:22 | בְּתֹוכֵךְ |
Noun.ms.Abs.+2fs | "in your midst" |
| Eze 28:23 | בָהּ, ח֣וּצֹותֶיהָ, תֹוכָהּ |
3fs suffixes | Sidon as city-body with streets/midst |
The city is grammatically singular feminine while its inhabitants are implicated by plural recognition language (וְיָדְעוּ).
3. Corporate Restoration: House of Israel¶
| Reference | Form | Parsing | Function |
|---|---|---|---|
| Eze 28:25 | בֵּית יִשְׂרָאֵל |
Noun.ms.Cst + PropN | Corporate "house" as object of gathering |
| Eze 28:25 | נָפֹצוּ |
Verb.Niphal.Perf.3p | scattered members |
| Eze 28:26 | יָשְׁבוּ ... בָנוּ ... נָטְעוּ |
Qal perfect 3p chain | restored people as plural actors |
The same unit uses corporate singular title (house of Israel) and plural verbs for the members.
Diagnostic Rule¶
Do not flatten referents merely because singular grammar is used. In prophetic address:
- Singular masculine ruler title can represent a named office or royal person.
- Singular feminine city address can represent a city as a corporate body.
house of Xcan designate a corporate people or dynasty.- A new speech formula can mark a new address layer inside the same chapter.
Grammar distinguishes these levels; theology and exegesis decide how they relate.
