Grammar Analysis: Isaiah 25:6–9

Overview

A compact eschatological oracle — the climactic "Mountain Banquet" at the center of the Isaianic "Apocalypse" (Isa 24–27). The passage unfolds in four panels:

  • v. 6 — YHWH of hosts prepares a feast for all peoples on "this mountain" (בָּהָר הַזֶּה, retrospective to Isa 24:23 / Zion).
  • v. 7 — YHWH "swallows" (בִלַּע Piel perf.) the shrouding covering over the nations.
  • v. 8 — YHWH "swallows up death forever" (בִּלַּע הַמָּוֶת לָנֶצַח); wipes every tear; removes his people's reproach.
  • v. 9 — The redeemed community's antiphonal weqatal response: "Behold, this is our God… we have waited for him."

Genre: apocalyptic-eschatological poetic oracle. Domain tagged Q (Quotation/prophetic-direct) across all clauses by the ETCBC parser — the entire block is YHWH's / the prophet's first-order eschatological pronouncement, not embedded narrative.

Text

Verse 6

Hebrew (BHS): וְעָשָׂה֩ יְהוָ֨ה צְבָאֹ֜ות לְכָל־הָֽעַמִּים֙ בָּהָ֣ר הַזֶּ֔ה מִשְׁתֵּ֥ה שְׁמָנִ֖ים מִשְׁתֵּ֣ה שְׁמָרִ֑ים שְׁמָנִים֙ מְמֻ֣חָיִ֔ם שְׁמָרִ֖ים מְזֻקָּקִֽים׃

KJV: And in this mountain shall the LORD of hosts make unto all people a feast of fat things, a feast of wines on the lees, of fat things full of marrow, of wines on the lees well refined.

Verse 7

Hebrew (BHS): וּבִלַּע֙ בָּהָ֣ר הַזֶּ֔ה פְּנֵֽי־הַלֹּ֥וט ׀ הַלֹּ֖וט עַל־כָּל־הָֽעַמִּ֑ים וְהַמַּסֵּכָ֥ה הַנְּסוּכָ֖ה עַל־כָּל־הַגֹּויִֽם׃

KJV: And he will destroy in this mountain the face of the covering cast over all people, and the vail that is spread over all nations.

Verse 8

Hebrew (BHS): בִּלַּ֤ע הַמָּ֨וֶת֙ לָנֶ֔צַח וּמָחָ֨ה אֲדֹנָ֧י יְהוִ֛ה דִּמְעָ֖ה מֵעַ֣ל כָּל־פָּנִ֑ים וְחֶרְפַּ֣ת עַמֹּ֗ו יָסִיר֙ מֵעַ֣ל כָּל־הָאָ֔רֶץ כִּ֥י יְהוָ֖ה דִּבֵּֽר׃

KJV: He will swallow up death in victory; and the Lord GOD will wipe away tears from off all faces; and the rebuke of his people shall he take away from off all the earth: for the LORD hath spoken [it].

Verse 9

Hebrew (BHS): וְאָמַר֙ בַּיֹּ֣ום הַה֔וּא הִנֵּ֨ה אֱלֹהֵ֥ינוּ זֶ֛ה קִוִּ֥ינוּ לֹ֖ו וְיֹֽושִׁיעֵ֑נוּ זֶ֤ה יְהוָה֙ קִוִּ֣ינוּ לֹ֔ו נָגִ֥ילָה וְנִשְׂמְחָ֖ה בִּישׁוּעָתֹֽו׃

KJV: And it shall be said in that day, Lo, this [is] our God; we have waited for him, and he will save us: this [is] the LORD; we have waited for him, we will be glad and rejoice in his salvation.

Clause Structure (ETCBC / BHSA)

v. 6 — one clause

  • Clause 1 (WQtX, Domain Q): וְעָשָׂה יְהוָה צְבָאֹות לְכָל־הָעַמִּים בָּהָר הַזֶּה מִשְׁתֵּה שְׁמָנִים… מְזֻקָּקִים
  • [Conj] וְ | [Pred] עָשָׂה | [Subj] יְהוָה צְבָאֹות | [Cmpl] לְכָל־הָעַמִּים | [Loca] בָּהָר הַזֶּה | [Objc] (the entire fourfold banquet phrase)

v. 7 — two clauses

v. 8 — four clauses

  • Clause 1 (ZQt0, Q) — asyndetic (no waw!): Pred בִּלַּע — Objc הַמָּוֶת — Time לָנֶצַח

v. 9 — eight clauses

Discourse pattern: v. 6–8 = divine-initiative qatal/Piel perfect panels (completed-from-God's-perspective); v. 9 = human-response weqatal + cohortative antiphon. The seam at v. 8 (asyndetic ZQt0 opener בִּלַּע הַמָּוֶת לָנֶצַח) is the oracle's pivot — the verbless asyndeton throws stress on the verb by fronting.

Construct Chains

From hebrew_parser.py --construct "Isa 25:6":

  • כָל־הָעַמִּים — "the whole of the peoples" / "all the peoples" (כל CST → עַמִּים ABS, with the article clinging to the absolute head per GKC §127e / W–O §13.4)
  • מִשְׁתֵּה שְׁמָנִים — "feast of fat things" (מִשְׁתֶּה CST → שְׁמָנִים ABS)
  • מִשְׁתֵּה שְׁמָרִים — "feast of lees/dregs (= aged wine)" (parallel chain)
  • חֶרְפַּת עַמֹּו (v. 8) — "reproach of his people" (חֶרְפָּה CST → עַם ABS+3ms suffix)
  • פְּנֵי־הַלֹּוט (v. 7) — "face of the covering"

The two מִשְׁתֵּה chains are bound in synthetic parallelism — the fourfold string שְׁמָנִים / שְׁמָרִים / שְׁמָנִים מְמֻחָיִם / שְׁמָרִים מְזֻקָּקִים is an A B A′ B′ ballast / staircase expansion: each noun is re-stated with an intensifying Pual participle.

Key Grammatical Features

1. מִשְׁתֶּה — banquet-noun as construct-head (v. 6, twice)

  • Form: Noun.ms.Cst; lemma משׁתה (Strong's H4960), verbal noun from שׁתה "to drink" with the מ- preformative of place/instrument/abstraction (GKC §85e).
  • Semantic range: The noun names an occasion dominated by drinking (cf. Gen 21:8; 29:22; Est 1:3, 5; 5:4; 7:2; 9:17). It is not a generic word for meal (אֲרֻחָה) or a sacrificial banquet (זֶבַח); it highlights the wine-component, which is why the following construct absolutes are all dairy/oil/wine words.
  • Doubled construct-head: מִשְׁתֵּה שְׁמָנִים || מִשְׁתֵּה שְׁמָרִים sets up a two-commodity banquet (fats/oils + aged wines), then the second bicolon re-names each commodity with an intensifying participle, building an ABAʹBʹ chiasmus by expansion.
  • Significance: The banquet is a royal-scale covenant meal (compare the Sinai covenant meal Exod 24:9–11, where elders "ate and drank" in YHWH's presence). Located "on this mountain" (Zion), it extends the inner-Israel covenant meal to כָּל־הָעַמִּים — "all the peoples", a universalizing move that is one of the strongest "nations-included" texts in Isa 24–27.
  • Word study (gap): No canonical entry yet for H4960 מִשְׁתֶּה / H8354 שׁתה. Candidate for the word-studies library.

2. שְׁמָרִים — "dregs / lees" (v. 6)

  • Form: Noun.mp.Abs; lemma שׁמר (Strong's H8105), plurale tantum for wine-lees.
  • Lexical: שְׁמָרִים are the sediment left when wine matures on its own yeast; "wine on the lees" is aged, undisturbed, fully-matured wine — a luxury good in the ANE. Jer 48:11 ("Moab… has settled on his lees") uses the same image for long undisturbed ease. Zeph 1:12 ("men who thicken on their dregs") uses it pejoratively.
  • Paired with מְזֻקָּקִים (Pual ptc., below): "wines on the lees well-refined" — the wine has been aged long enough on the yeast to develop full body, then racked / clarified so that the dregs are left behind. This is an oxymoron-by-process: the best of aged-with-its-own-dregs wine without the dregs actually in the cup. Culturally, this is the highest-quality wine available — the equivalent today of a vintage that has been aged in bottle and decanted.

3. מְמֻחָיִם and מְזֻקָּקִים — paired Pual participles (v. 6)

  • Form: Both are Verb.Pual.Ptcp.mp.Abs. Pual is the passive counterpart of Piel — factitive/intensive passive ("caused to be X, and X-ness is intense/complete").
  • מְמֻחָיִם — Pual ptc. mp of מחה (lemma gloss "wipe / fill up"; here "filled with marrow"; the verb root carries "rich, juicy fatness") — predicated of שְׁמָנִים; i.e. "fat cuts thoroughly shot-through with marrow". Hapax as Pual participle of מחה.
  • מְזֻקָּקִים — Pual ptc. mp of זקק "to refine, strain, purify" — predicated of שְׁמָרִים; i.e. aged-lees wines that have been thoroughly clarified / strained. Elsewhere used of metal refining (Mal 3:3 of Levi; Job 28:1; 36:27; 1 Chr 28:18; 29:4; Ps 12:6 — "the words of YHWH are purified words, silver מְזֻקָּק").
  • Significance: Paired Pual participles in a banquet list are extremely rare. The passive voice matters theologically — the food and wine have been acted upon (prepared, refined, perfected) before the banquet begins. The guests find the feast already in its perfected state; the agency is YHWH's (v. 6 opener עָשָׂה יְהוָה "YHWH prepared").
  • Ps 12:6 lexical link: "the words of YHWH are מְזֻקָּקִים, refined seven times" — same Pual ptc. form, now applied to divine speech. The poetic move in Isa 25:6 is to treat banquet hospitality with the same vocabulary normally reserved for metallurgical perfection of divine utterance — the banquet is therefore qualitatively divine-grade.
  • Grammar reference gap: No canonical entry yet for stem-pual. Candidate for the library.

4. בִּלַּע — Piel perfect "swallow/engulf" (v. 7, v. 8)

  • Form: Verb.Piel.Perf.3ms of בלע (Strong's H1104). The Piel of בלע is the default attested stem for this verb (Qal is rare); carries factitive/resultative force: "cause-to-be-swallowed = utterly destroy, engulf, annihilate".
  • Twice in two verses — the rhetorical hinge of the oracle. v. 7 "he has swallowed the covering"; v. 8 "he has swallowed the Death".
  • v. 8 opens asyndetically (no waw, clause-type ZQt0) — the absence of the conjunction accelerates the discourse at the climactic line. The single-word predicate בִּלַּע hits first, then the object הַמָּוֶת (with the article — "the Death", i.e. Death-as-entity, personified), then the durative adverbial לָנֶצַח.
  • לָנֶצַח — Prep לְ + נֶצַח (Strong's H5331 "perpetuity, duration, glory, eminence"). Here = "forever, for all time, in perpetuity" (most common sense; e.g. Ps 49:10; Amos 1:11; Job 14:20). The KJV's "in victory" reflects the LXX translator's κατίσχυσεν ὁ θάνατος καταπιών "death prevailed having swallowed-up" — the LXX reversed the Hebrew subject-object relationship and rendered לָנֶצַח as eis nikos "unto victory". Paul in 1 Cor 15:54 follows the LXX sense (κατεπόθη ὁ θάνατος εἰς νῖκος), reading it as the eschatological consummation of the Hebrew oracle.
  • Significance: The verb normally used for Death's devouring of humans (cf. the serpent-sea-monster-Sheol mythology of Num 16:30–33; Prov 1:12; Isa 5:14 "Sheol enlarged its appetite and swallowed [בָּלְעָה]"; Jon 2:1/LXX; cognate Ugaritic bl' "Mot swallows Baal") is here reversed — YHWH swallows Death itself. This is the most explicit OT reversal of the Death-devourer motif.
  • Word-study gap: No canonical entry for H1104 בלע. High priority for the library given the NT citation chain (1 Cor 15:54 → Rev 21:4).

5. הַלֹּוט / הַמַּסֵּכָה / הַנְּסוּכָה — the covering-veil (v. 7)

  • הַלֹּוט — Qal ptc. ms of לוט "enwrap, envelop" (Strong's H3874), used substantively with the article = "the enwrapping(-veil)". The doubling הַלֹּוט ׀ הַלֹּוט (repeated lemma with paseq disjunction) is a rare rhetorical intensifier — "the enwrapping, the enwrapping itself" / "the utter covering".
  • הַמַּסֵּכָה — Noun.fs.Abs (Strong's H4541) "molten image / woven covering". Homograph: (a) "molten-metal idol" (Exod 32:4; Deut 9:12) and (b) "woven covering" (Isa 28:20; here). Context (parallel to הַלֹּוט) = covering/veil.
  • הַנְּסוּכָה — Qal passive/stative ptc. fs of נסך "to pour out, spread, weave" (Strong's H5258/H5259); attributive relative to מַסֵּכָה. Parsed by ETCBC as a separate attributive clause (Ptcp) — הַנְּסוּכָה עַל־כָּל־הַגֹּויִם "the-one-spread over all the nations".
  • Significance: Metaphor of a mourning-veil / funereal cloth / shroud stretched over every face of every nation — what YHWH "swallows" in v. 7 is immediately identified in v. 8 as הַמָּוֶת itself. The shroud = death's pall. Removing the shroud and abolishing death are one action viewed twice.

6. יָסִיר — Hiphil imperfect with object-fronting (v. 8)

  • Form: Verb.Hiphil.Impf.3ms of סור "turn aside" → Hiphil "cause-to-turn-aside = remove".
  • Clause type WxY0 with object fronting: וְחֶרְפַּת עַמֹּו יָסִיר — the object (חֶרְפַּת עַמֹּו "the reproach of his people") precedes the verb. Object-fronting in a yiqtol clause flanked by two qatal clauses (בִּלַּע… מָחָה… יָסִיר… דִּבֵּר) produces a topicalized/contrastive focus on "his people's reproach" — the audience's own shame is singled out and separately promised removal.
  • The yiqtol form amid the qatal panels is not a tense shift; it's a pragmatic aspect shift — "the reproach-of-his-people — that he will (keep on) removing, from over all the earth".

7. כִּי יְהוָה דִּבֵּר — prophetic signature formula (v. 8)

  • Form: XQtl clause — causal/assertive כִּי + Subj + Piel perf. דִּבֵּר (Strong's H1696, Piel = "speak decisively, authoritatively utter").
  • Stock formula closing divine-oracle units in Isaiah: 1:2, 20; 21:17; 22:25; 24:3; 25:8; 40:5; 58:14; (cf. "YHWH of hosts has spoken/purposed" 14:24, 27; 19:4; 22:14). The Piel perfect is performative-completive — "the utterance has been made; it is as good as done".

8. קִוִּינוּ לֹו — Piel perfect of קוה (v. 9, twice)

  • Form: Verb.Piel.Perf.1cp of קוה "wait/hope for" (Strong's H6960). Piel = intensive ("wait expectantly, strain toward").
  • Repeated clause-by-clause (ZQt0 in both clauses 3 and 6) — anaphoric confession of covenant hope. Paired with two demonstrative-nominal clauses זֶה אֱלֹהֵינוּ // זֶה יְהוָה (NmCl verbless identification constructions).
  • The qatal is a performative present-perfect ("we have been waiting / we-hereby-declare-our-waiting"); c.f. Isa 8:17, 26:8; Ps 25:3, 5, 21.

9. נָגִילָה וְנִשְׂמְחָה — paired 1cp cohortatives (v. 9)

  • Form: Verb.Qal.Impf.1cp of גיל + שׂמח, both volitional/cohortative ("let us…"). Clause types ZYq0 and WYq0.
  • Double volitional — the community's self-exhortation to celebrate. Paired synonyms גיל + שׂמח recur in Isa 35:1–2; 65:18–19; 66:10; Ps 14:7; 32:11; 53:7; 118:24. The cohortative closes the oracle on human response rather than divine pronouncement — the "feast" has turned into a celebration with voice.
  • Grammar reference link: See cohortative-1cp-divine-speech for the 1cp cohortative form generally; the Isa 25:9 usage is the human-communal mirror of the divine "let us make man" 1cp cohortative. The category in the reference entry is divine-speech; an analogue human-communal-confession category could be added.
  • Word-study link: H8055-samach covers שׂמח generally.

10. וְיֹושִׁיעֵנוּ — Hiphil imperfect with 1cp object-suffix (v. 9)

  • Form: Verb.Hiphil.Impf.3ms of ישׁע (Strong's H3467) + 1cp object suffix.
  • Paired with the cognate noun בִּישׁוּעָתֹו (Noun.fs "his salvation" + 3ms) closing the verse — a figura etymologica ("he will save us… in his salvation"): the same root frames the verse's final motion.
  • Grammar reference link: hiphil-imperfect.

Exegetical Assessment — literal new-creation feast, or figurative covenant joy?

The question is a classic crux. The grammar and genre push the reading in a specific direction:

1. Genre signal. Isa 24–27 (the "Isaianic Apocalypse") is proto-apocalyptic: cosmic-level judgment (24:1–6 "YHWH is emptying the earth"), cosmic-level reversal (24:23 "the moon will be abashed"), feast-on-Zion (25:6–9), resurrection (26:19 "your dead shall live"), and eschatological monster-defeat (27:1 Leviathan). The feast in 25:6–9 sits inside the only OT block that explicitly promises resurrection + death-annihilation + all-nations-included banquet together. The surrounding cosmology is not domestic — it is new-creation-scale.

2. Internal grammatical markers that resist reducing to figurative covenant-joy-only: - לָנֶצַח (v. 8) — Death is swallowed forever, not "in the covenant era". The prep-lamed + נֶצַח combination is temporally unrestricted. Even in Hebrew usage where נֶצַח shades to "glory/completeness", the parallel Hiphil imperfect יָסִיר מֵעַל כָּל־הָאָרֶץ ("from off all the earth") universalizes the scope. - Universal recipients: לְכָל־הָעַמִּים (v. 6), עַל־כָּל־הָעַמִּים / עַל־כָּל־הַגֹּויִם (v. 7), כָּל־פָּנִים / כָּל־הָאָרֶץ (v. 8). A purely covenant-renewal reading must shrink "all peoples / all nations / every face / all the earth" — which the text resists lexically and syntactically. - הַמָּוֶת with the article — "the Death" as an entity, not death-events metonymized as sorrow. Personified-entity language (swallowed, with article) outstrips the figurative-covenant-joy register. - Pual participles of perfection (מְמֻחָיִם / מְזֻקָּקִים) — the banquet is depicted in completed-perfection state, not as an ordinary covenant feast.

3. What a figurative-only reading gets right. The mountain-feast motif does draw on the covenant-meal background (Exod 24:9–11; Deut 14:26; the Zion-enthronement imagery of Ps 24, 132). The vocabulary is continuous with covenant-joy vocabulary (גיל / שׂמח / ישׁוּעָה). So the passage is not discontinuous from covenant-feast imagery — it is its eschatological intensification.

4. Best reading. The passage describes a literal eschatological new-creation banquet whose imagery is drawn from, and intensifies, the covenant-meal tradition. It is not either/or. The figurative covenant-feast vocabulary is the vehicle; the tenor is the new-creation feast where Death is actually abolished, all nations actually come, and the mourning-shroud is actually removed. Reducing the vehicle by calling it "only figurative covenant joy" leaves v. 8's death-abolition without a referent that matches its grammatical scope.

5. NT inter-textual confirmation. The NT reads the oracle as literal new-creation eschatology: - 1 Cor 15:54 quotes Isa 25:8 at the resurrection of the dead ("when the mortal puts on immortality, then will come to pass the saying that is written: κατεπόθη ὁ θάνατος εἰς νῖκος"). Paul's citation fixes the referent at the bodily resurrection, not at an intra-historical covenant renewal. - Rev 7:17 / 21:4 quote Isa 25:8 twice ("God will wipe away every tear from their eyes"), both in the new-Jerusalem / new-creation context; 21:4 adds "and death shall be no more" — a direct echo of בִּלַּע הַמָּוֶת לָנֶצַח. - Rev 19:9 — "Blessed are those invited to the marriage supper of the Lamb (τοῦ δείπνου τοῦ γάμου τοῦ ἀρνίου)". The noun δεῖπνον ("banquet-meal") + the nations-included guest list recapitulates Isa 25:6's מִשְׁתֵּה. - Matt 8:11 — "many will come from east and west and recline at table with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven". The all-nations-at-the-Zion-feast structure is Isa 25:6's structure transposed into Jesus' mouth. - Matt 22:1–14 — the parable of the marriage-feast of the king's son, with the invitation extending to "as many as you find" after the first guests refuse, is Jesus' re-telling of the Isa 25:6 universal-banquet scene with the twist that the originally-invited nation has excluded itself. - Matt 26:29 — "I shall not drink again of this fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father's kingdom". At the Last Supper Jesus deliberately suspends the wine of the covenant meal until the eschatological μετά-drinking — a direct deferral of the Isa 25:6 wine-banquet to the new-creation consummation.

The NT's uniform reading is: Isa 25:6–9 describes the literal eschatological feast at the consummation, with the wine-at-the-lees being resumed in the new-creation cup, death actually abolished at resurrection, the shroud actually lifted, and the response actually antiphonally voiced by the redeemed from all nations.
