WG: Night and Darkness (Hebrew Time/Light Vocabulary)¶
Overview¶
The biblical vocabulary for "night" spans the full darkness cycle — from the onset of dusk (ereb) through twilight (nesheph) into full night (layil), with darkness (choshek) as the underlying quality. These words interact with the day vocabulary (yowm, yowmam) in merisms, contrasts, and creation ordinances. This group complements WG-day.md by focusing on the darkness side of the day/night pair.

Semantic Relationships¶
Temporal Sequence: ereb → nesheph → layil → boqer¶
The Hebrew night vocabulary traces a sequence: ereb marks dusk (the boundary), nesheph is the transitional twilight, layil is the full darkness period, and boqer (morning) ends it. Gen 1:5 establishes the "evening and morning" frame; the intermediate terms fill the gradations.
Quality vs. Period: choshek / layil¶
Choshek names the quality (darkness as substance — Gen 1:2 "darkness was upon the face of the deep") while layil names the period (the time when darkness prevails). They co-occur in only 8 verses (4% of layil), showing they are largely complementary rather than redundant.
Antithetic Pair: layil / yowm¶
The "day and night" pair functions as a merism for totality — unbroken, continuous action. This formula appears in worship (Ps 1:2, 134:1), prayer (1 Ki 8:29, Neh 1:6), suffering (Ps 42:3), and creation ordinance (Gen 8:22, Jer 33:20-25).
