WG: Desolate / Desolation
Overview
Hebrew uses a tight family of words from the root שמם (š-m-m) to describe the twin realities of physical ruin and psychological stupefaction. These five words — verb, two nouns, adjective, and a second verb from a parallel root — together map the full semantic field of biblical desolation: the act of laying waste, the resulting state, the horror felt by witnesses, and the prophetic formula used in Daniel's "abomination of desolation."

Roles in the Concept
- Act: שָׁמֵם (H8074) — the verb; the act of stunning/devastating, or being stupefied
- State of land: שְׁמָמָה (H8077) — the noun for the resulting condition of the land/city ("the desolation")
- State of witness: שַׁמָּה (H8047) — the noun for the horror felt by those who see it ("a desolation/horror to nations")
- Condition: שָׁמֵם (H8076, adj) — the adjective describing something as ruined/desolate
- Physical ruin: חָרַב (H2717) — the parallel verb for parching/drying destruction; complements שמם by grounding ruin in physical/material devastation (drought, sword) vs. שמם's psychological dimension
Key Passages Where Multiple Group Words Appear Together
- Jer 12:11 — שָׁמֵם + שְׁמָמָה + שָׁמֵם (adj): "They have made it [H8074] desolate, [and being] desolate [H8076] it mourneth unto me; the whole land is made desolate [H8074], because no man layeth it to heart."
- Ezek 29:12 — שָׁמֵם + שְׁמָמָה + חָרַב: "And I will make the land of Egypt desolate [H8074] in the midst of the countries [that are] desolate [H8077], and her cities among the cities [that are] laid waste [H2717]"
- Jer 18:16; 19:8 — שָׁמֵם + שַׁמָּה: "make their land desolate [H8074], and a perpetual hissing; every one that passeth thereby shall be astonished... [H8047 shammah]"
- Dan 9:27; 11:31; 12:11 — שָׁמֵם alone (Piel participle) as fixed formula: "the abomination that maketh desolate" — the verb becomes a technical term for sanctuary desecration, picked up in LXX as ἐρήμωσις (G2050) and quoted by Jesus (Matt 24:15)
