Text¶
KJV (v. 9): I beheld till the thrones were cast down, and the Ancient of days did sit, whose garment was white as snow, and the hair of his head like the pure wool: his throne was like the fiery flame, and his wheels as burning fire.
KJV (v. 10): A fiery stream issued and came forth from before him: thousand thousands ministered unto him, and ten thousand times ten thousand stood before him: the judgment was set, and the books were opened.

Construct Chains¶
Verse 9: - עַתִּיק יוֹמִין -- Adj.ms.Cst + Noun.mp.Abs = "ancient-of days" (construct chain forming a divine title) - שְׂעַר רֵאשֵׁהּ -- Noun.ms.Cst + Noun.ms.Abs+3ms = "hair-of his-head"
Verse 10: - אֶלֶף אלפים -- Noun.s.Cst + Noun.mp.Abs = "a-thousand-of thousands" (multiplicative number idiom) - רִבּוֹ רבון -- Noun.fs.Cst + Noun.fp.Abs = "a-myriad-of myriads" (multiplicative number idiom)
Key Grammatical Features¶
1. Periphrastic Imperfective: חָזֵה הֲוֵית (Peal Participle + Peal Perfect of הוה)¶
- Form: Peal active participle (חָזֵה, ms.Abs of חזה "see") + Peal perfect 1s (הֲוֵית of הוה "be") = compound periphrastic construction
- Significance: This is the signature Aramaic vision-introduction formula, functioning as a past durative/imperfective: "I was watching." The participle supplies the durative aspect (ongoing visual perception) while the perfect of הוה anchors it in past time. The same formula opens seven vision-units in Daniel 7: vv. 2, 4, 6, 7, 9, 11, 13 (and cf. Dan 4:10). In v. 9 it is followed by עַד דִּי ("until"), creating a temporal frame: "I was watching until..." -- the continuous vision process had a terminus, the setting up of the judgment.
- Grammar reference: vision-introduction-formulas (Frame 3, Aramaic counterparts)
2. רְמִיו (Peil Perfect 3mp of רמה) -- "were placed"¶
- Form: Peil (Aramaic G-passive, equivalent to Hebrew Niphal/Pual) perfect 3mp of רמה (H7412), glossed "throw, cast"
- Significance: The Peil stem is the basic Aramaic passive. BDB documents two senses for the Peil of this root: (1) "were cast" -- of persons thrown into a location (Dan 3:21, same form רְמִיו), and (2) "were placed, set" (Dan 7:9), with BDB cross-referencing Jeremiah 1:15 and the Hebrew root ירה as semantic parallels for the "set/place" meaning. The KJV "were cast down" translates the "throw" sense, but the courtroom context favors "were set in place" -- thrones being established for a judicial tribunal, not overturned. The same Peil.Perf.3mp form appears in Dan 3:21 for Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego "thrown" into the furnace, showing the root's semantic range spans both violent casting and deliberate placement. The verb is perfect aspect, presenting the throne-setting as completed fact -- when the visionary looks, the thrones are already placed. The subject כָרְסָוָן is plural: multiple thrones, not one, establishing a tribunal scene.
- Peil occurrences of רמה verified from parser: Dan 3:21 (persons cast into furnace, 3mp), Dan 7:9 (thrones placed, 3mp)
3. יְתִב (Peal Perfect 3ms of יתב) -- Double Use: "sat" (v. 9) and "was convened" (v. 10)¶
- Form: Peal perfect 3ms of יתב (H3488, Aramaic cognate of Hebrew ישׁב "sit, dwell")
- Significance: The same verb form appears twice in these two verses with different subjects and different semantic functions:
- v. 9: Subject = עַתִּיק יוֹמִין ("Ancient of Days"). Meaning: "sat down" -- physical enthronement of the Judge on the fiery throne just described. The clause is WXQt (waw + fronted subject + perfect), presenting the sitting as a new event in the narrative sequence following the throne-placement.
- v. 10: Subject = דִּינָא ("the judgment"). Meaning: "sat" = was convened, was established, took its seat. The clause is XQtl (fronted subject + perfect) with the abstract noun "judgment" as grammatical subject. BDB explicitly notes this legal usage: "of judgment = the judge" -- the dina sitting is the judicial proceeding itself being formally opened. Daniel 7:26 uses the imperfect of the same verb (יִתִּב "shall sit") for the future establishment of that same court.
- Lexical data (BDB/H3488): Three Peal occurrences in Daniel, all in chapter 7: Dan 7:9 (enthronement), Dan 7:10 (court convened), Dan 7:26 (imperfect, court shall sit). Two additional occurrences in Ezra: Ezra 4:17 (participle, "dwelling") and Ezra 4:10 (Haphel causative, "caused to dwell"). The verb's entire Daniel distribution is courtroom-scene vocabulary.

4. The Verbal Tense Sequence: Perfect --> Nominal --> Participle --> Imperfect --> Perfect --> Peil¶
- Form: The two verses deploy a carefully structured progression through four different Aramaic verb/predicate types:
Phase 1 -- Completed actions establishing the scene (Perfects, v. 9a): - רְמִיו (Peil.Perf.3mp) -- thrones were placed - יְתִב (Peal.Perf.3ms) -- the Ancient of Days sat
Phase 2 -- Static descriptions of the enthroned figure (Nominal/Verbless Clauses, v. 9b): - לְבוּשֵׁהּ כִּתְלַג חִוָּר -- "his garment like white snow" (NmCl) - שְׂעַר רֵאשֵׁהּ כַּעֲמַר נְקֵא -- "hair of his head like pure wool" (NmCl) - כָּרְסְיֵהּ שְׁבִיבִין דִּי נוּר -- "his throne flames of fire" (NmCl) - גַּלְגִּלֹּוהִי נוּר דָּלִק -- "his wheels burning fire" (NmCl)
Phase 3 -- Ongoing activity emanating from the throne (Participles + Imperfects, v. 10a-b): - נָגֵד (Peal.Ptcp.ms) -- flowing (fire river) - נָפֵק (Peal.Ptcp.ms) -- going out (from before him) - יְשַׁמְּשׁוּנֵּהּ (Pael.Impf.3mp+3ms) -- were serving him - יְקוּמוּן (Peal.Impf.3mp) -- were standing (before him)
Phase 4 -- Judicial actions completing the scene (Perfects, v. 10c): - יְתִב (Peal.Perf.3ms) -- the judgment was convened - פְּתִיחוּ (Peil.Perf.3mp) -- books were opened
- Significance: The grammar architecturally stages the judgment scene in four distinct phases. The perfect verbs in Phase 1 present the throne-setting and enthronement as accomplished facts. The four verbless nominal clauses in Phase 2 freeze the frame to describe the Judge's appearance -- no verbs, pure predication, creating a tableau. Phase 3 shifts to participles (durative, ongoing: fire flowing, going out) and imperfects (habitual/progressive: thousands serving, myriads standing), portraying continuous activity radiating from the throne. Phase 4 returns to perfects for the decisive judicial acts: the court sits, the books open. The movement from completed-setup through static-description through ongoing-activity to completed-judicial-action mirrors a courtroom being called to order, with the grammar itself marking each stage.
5. פְּתִיחוּ (Peil Perfect 3mp of פתח) -- "were opened"¶
- Form: Peil (G-passive) perfect 3mp of פתח "open"
- Significance: The final verb of the two-verse unit, closing the scene with a divine passive. The books (סִפְרִין, mp.Abs of ספר) are the grammatical subject; no agent is named for the opening. This is the second Peil passive in the passage (after רְמִיו in v. 9), creating an inclusio of passive verbs framing the entire judgment scene: thrones were placed (Peil, v. 9) ... books were opened (Peil, v. 10). Both passives suppress the divine agent -- who places the thrones and opens the books is grammatically unexpressed, placing the emphasis on the events themselves rather than attributing them to a named actor. The agentless-passive pattern in judicial contexts functions as what grammarians call the "divine passive" -- the implied agent is God or the heavenly court, but the grammar declines to name the agent directly.
6. יְשַׁמְּשׁוּנֵּהּ (Pael Imperfect 3mp + 3ms suffix of שׁמשׁ) -- "were serving him"¶
- Form: Pael (Aramaic D-stem, equivalent to Hebrew Piel) imperfect 3mp with 3ms pronominal object suffix of שׁמשׁ "serve, minister"
- Significance: This is the only finite verb in the passage in the Pael (intensive/factitive) stem, and it is the only imperfect with a pronominal suffix. The Pael intensifies the base meaning: not merely serving but actively, intensively ministering. The 3ms suffix (-נֵּהּ) identifies the Ancient of Days as the direct object of their service. The imperfect tense presents the service as ongoing/habitual: they were serving (durative), not served (completed). This contrasts with the perfects in the judicial frame (רְמִיו, יְתִב, פְּתִיחוּ), which present those actions as accomplished. The number idiom אֶלֶף אַלְפִין (construct chain: "thousand of thousands") as the subject portrays innumerable attendants -- the construct-chain multiplication idiom found also with רִבּוֹ רִבְבָן ("myriad of myriads"), both functioning as multiplicative number expressions (1,000 x 1,000 = millions; 10,000 x 10,000 = hundreds of millions).
7. Construct Chain: עַתִּיק יוֹמִין ("Ancient of Days")¶
- Form: Adj.ms.Cst עַתִּיק ("old, ancient") + Noun.mp.Abs יוֹמִין ("days")
- Significance: This construct chain functions as a divine title, unique to Daniel 7 (vv. 9, 13, 22). The adjective in construct state governs the noun "days," producing the meaning "one who is ancient with respect to days" -- i.e., one whose existence extends across all days. The construct chain is grammatically analogous to other Aramaic/Hebrew titles built on adjective-construct + temporal-noun patterns. The plural יוֹמִין ("days") rather than a singular noun like עָלָם ("eternity") grounds the title in historical time: this is not abstract timelessness but antiquity measured in days that stretch beyond counting.
- Grammar reference: construct-state
Grammatical Architecture of the Scene¶
The two verses form a single literary-grammatical unit structured by the interplay of verb forms:
FRAME OPENING: חָזֵה הֲוֵית עַד דִּי (periphrastic imperfective -- "I was watching until")
SETUP: כָרְסָוָן רְמִיו (Peil perfect -- thrones placed)
עַתִּיק יוֹמִין יְתִב (Peal perfect -- Ancient of Days sat)
DESCRIPTION: 4 x Nominal Clause (verbless -- garment, hair, throne, wheels)
ACTIVITY: נָגֵד וְנָפֵק (2 x participle -- fire flowing, going out)
יְשַׁמְּשׁוּנֵּהּ ... יְקוּמוּן (2 x imperfect -- serving, standing)
VERDICT: דִּינָא יְתִב (Peal perfect -- judgment convened)
סִפְרִין פְּתִיחוּ (Peil perfect -- books opened)
The scene opens and closes with perfect-tense verbs (completed actions), wrapping around a center of nominal clauses, participles, and imperfects (descriptions and ongoing activity). The Peil passive frames the whole unit (רְמִיו opening / פְּתִיחוּ closing), placing the judicial apparatus in place without naming the agent. The repeated יְתִב bridges the two halves: first the person sits (v. 9), then the judgment sits (v. 10) -- same verb, different subjects, marking the transition from enthronement to judicial proceeding.
