Greek Comparative Adjective with Definite Article¶
Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/grammar-reference/greek/comparative-adjective-with-article.md
Key findings incorporated into 04-word-studies.md:
-
Heb 6:19 — to esoteron (T-ASN + A-ASN-C): substantivized comparative. The article converts the adjective into a noun phrase: "the inner [place]."
-
Koine comparatives as simple positives: The -teros spatial comparatives (esoteros, exoteros, anoteros) function as basic positional adjectives in Koine. There is no positive-degree adjective form. Esoteros means "inner" (simple positive) rather than forcing a comparison between two compartments.
-
Acts 16:24 comparison: ten esoteran phylaken — attributive position. Same comparative in secular context. "The inner prison" = the more secure, further-in cell.
-
Without article = adverbial: Luke 14:10 anoteron without article = "higher" (adverbially modifying the verb). Heb 6:19's article forces definite, particularized reference.
-
Comparative vs. superlative in Koine: The superlative was dying out. Comparatives sometimes functioned as superlatives (Matt 11:11 mikroteros = "least" though morphologically comparative). But esoteros is a spatial term, not a degree-of-comparison term.
Implication for the study: The comparative form of esoteros does NOT necessarily imply "the innermost of two compartments." It simply designates the interior space relative to the veil. Whether this means the Holy Place (interior relative to the courtyard) or the Most Holy Place (interior relative to the Holy Place) must be determined by context and the referent of katapetasma.
