Critical Parsing Notes for Dan 12:7

  1. וַיָּרֶם (wayyarem): Hiphil Wayyiqtol 3ms of רום (rum, "to be high") — "and he lifted/raised." The Hiphil causative: he caused [his hands] to go up. Wayyiqtol narrative sequence: this action follows the hearing.

  2. יְמִינוֹ וּשְׂמֹאלוֹ (yemino u-smolo): "his right [hand] and his left [hand]." BOTH hands raised — contrast with Rev 10:5 where only the RIGHT hand is raised (ten dexian). The raising of both hands intensifies the oath formula (cf. Deut 32:40 where God lifts His hand in singular).

  3. וַיִּשָּׁבַע (wayyishaba): Niphal Wayyiqtol 3ms of שׁבע (shaba, H7650) — "and he swore." The Niphal reflexive: "he sevened himself" / "he bound himself by oath." The wayyiqtol continues the narrative sequence after the hand-raising.

  4. בְּחֵי הָעוֹלָם (be-chey ha-olam): "by the living [one] of eternity" — the oath mediator formula. Construct chain: chey (living, adjective ms construct of חי H2416) + ha-olam (the eternity, noun ms absolute of עולם H5769). This is the identical formula behind the Greek ἐν τῷ ζῶντι εἰς τοὺς αἰῶνας τῶν αἰώνων in Rev 10:6.

  5. לְמוֹעֵד מוֹעֲדִים וָחֵצִי (le-moed moedim va-chetsi): "for an appointed time, appointed times, and a half." The oath CONTENT — a time duration. Moed (H4150) = appointed time/meeting. The formula: singular + plural + half = 1 + 2 + ½ = 3½ time units.

  6. וּכְכַלּוֹת נַפֵּץ יַד־עַם־קֹדֶשׁ (u-khe-khallot nappets yad-am-qodesh): "and when the shattering of the hand/power of the holy people is complete." Two Piel infinitive constructs chained: kallot (to finish, Piel Inf. Cst. of כלה H3615) + nappets (to shatter, Piel Inf. Cst. of נפץ H5310). The construct chain yad-am-qodesh = "hand of people of holiness" = the power of the holy people.

  7. תִּכְלֶינָה כָל־אֵלֶּה (tikhleynah kol-elleh): "all these things shall be finished." Qal Imperfect 3fp of כלה (kalah) — the feminine plural agrees with the implied feminine subject (the wonders/things asked about in v.6). This is the TERMINUS: when the shattering is complete, all these things finish.
