Verses¶
Primary Verses — Core Forensic Texts¶
Genesis 15:1-21 (Full Chapter — The Imputation Anchor)¶
15:1 After these things the word of the LORD came unto Abram in a vision, saying, Fear not, Abram: I am thy shield, and thy exceeding great reward. 15:2 And Abram said, Lord GOD, what wilt thou give me, seeing I go childless, and the steward of my house is this Eliezer of Damascus? 15:3 And Abram said, Behold, to me thou hast given no seed: and, lo, one born in my house is mine heir. 15:4 And, behold, the word of the LORD came unto him, saying, This shall not be thine heir; but he that shall come forth out of thine own bowels shall be thine heir. 15:5 And he brought him forth abroad, and said, Look now toward heaven, and tell the stars, if thou be able to number them: and he said unto him, So shall thy seed be. 15:6 And he believed in the LORD; and he counted it to him for righteousness. 15:7 And he said unto him, I am the LORD that brought thee out of Ur of the Chaldees, to give thee this land to inherit it. 15:8-18 [Covenant ceremony with animal sacrifice — God passes through the pieces alone]
Hebrew Parsing of Gen 15:6: - וְהֶאֱמִן (he'emin) — Hiphil Perfect 3ms of אמן (aman, H539): "he believed/trusted" — causative: he caused himself to be firm in - בַּיהוָה (baYHWH) — "in the LORD" - וַיַּחְשְׁבֶהָ (vayyachsheveha) — Qal Wayyiqtol 3ms of חשׁב (chashab, H2803) + 3fs suffix: "and he reckoned it" - לוֹ (lo) — "to him" - צְדָקָה (tsedaqah, H6666) — feminine noun absolute: "righteousness"
Romans 3:1-31 (Full Chapter — Justification by Faith)¶
3:10 As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one 3:20 Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin. 3:21 But now the righteousness of God without the law is manifested, being witnessed by the law and the prophets; 3:22 Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference: 3:23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; 3:24 Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus: 3:25 Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God; 3:26 To declare, I say, at this time his righteousness: that he might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus. 3:28 Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith without the deeds of the law.
Greek Parsing of Rom 3:24: δικαιούμενοι (dikaiounmenoi) — Present Passive Participle Nominative Plural Masculine of δικαιόω (G1344): "being justified" — present tense = ongoing availability; passive = divine passive (God is the agent); δωρεάν = "freely/as a gift"; τῇ αὐτοῦ χάριτι = "by his grace"
Romans 4:1-25 (Full Chapter — Abraham and Imputation)¶
4:3 For what saith the scripture? Abraham believed God, and it was counted unto him for righteousness. 4:4 Now to him that worketh is the reward not reckoned of grace, but of debt. 4:5 But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness. 4:6 Even as David also describeth the blessedness of the man, unto whom God imputeth righteousness without works, 4:7 Saying, Blessed are they whose iniquities are forgiven, and whose sins are covered. 4:8 Blessed is the man to whom the Lord will not impute sin. 4:11 And he received the sign of circumcision, a seal of the righteousness of the faith which he had yet being uncircumcised 4:22-25 And therefore it was imputed to him for righteousness... Who was delivered for our offences, and was raised again for our justification.
Greek Parsing of Rom 4:3: ἐλογίσθη (elogisthe) — Aorist Passive Indicative 3rd Singular of λογίζομαι (G3049): "it was reckoned/counted" — divine passive; εἰς δικαιοσύνην = "for/unto righteousness"
Romans 5:1-21 (Full Chapter — Condemnation vs. Justification)¶
5:1 Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ 5:9 Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him. 5:18 Therefore as by the offence of one judgment came upon all men to condemnation; even so by the righteousness of one the free gift came upon all men unto justification of life. 5:19 For as by one man's disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous. 5:21 That as sin hath reigned unto death, even so might grace reign through righteousness unto eternal life by Jesus Christ our Lord.
Greek Parsing of Rom 5:18: δικαιώματος (dikaiomatos, G1345) — Genitive Singular Neuter: "of one righteous act"; εἰς δικαίωσιν ζωῆς — "unto justification of life"; κατάκριμα (G2631) vs. δικαίωσιν (G1347) — condemnation vs. justification as antonym pair.
Romans 8:1-4, 30, 33-34 (Courtroom Vindication)¶
8:1 There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. 8:4 That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. 8:30 Moreover whom he did predestinate, them he also called: and whom he called, them he also justified: and whom he justified, them he also glorified. 8:33 Who shall lay any thing to the charge of God's elect? It is God that justifieth. 8:34 Who is he that condemneth? It is Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us.
Greek Parsing of Rom 8:33: δικαιῶν (dikaion) — Present Active Participle Nominative Singular Masculine of δικαιόω (G1344): "the one justifying" — God is named as the active justifier; present tense = continuous action.
Deuteronomy 25:1 (Courtroom Acquittal/Condemnation Pair)¶
When there is a lawsuit (riyb) between men, and they come unto judgment (mishpat), then they shall judge (shaphat) them; then they shall justify (Hiphil tsadaq) the righteous (tsaddiyq), and condemn (Hiphil rasha) the wicked (rasha).
Hebrew Parsing: Five key words converge: רִיב (riyb, H7379) — lawsuit; מִשְׁפָּט (mishpat, H4941) — judgment; שָׁפַט (shaphat, H8199) — to judge; הִצְדִּיקוּ (hitsdiyqu, Hiphil of tsadaq, H6663) — to declare righteous/acquit; הִרְשִׁיעוּ (hirshiy'u, Hiphil of rasha, H7561) — to declare wicked/condemn. The Hiphil stems make both verbs declarative: the court declares the righteous to be righteous and the wicked to be wicked.
Exodus 23:7 (God Will Not Justify the Wicked)¶
Keep thee far from a false matter; and the innocent (naqiy) and righteous (tsaddiyq) slay thou not: for I will not justify (Hiphil tsadaq) the wicked (rasha).
Hebrew Parsing: אַצְדִּיק (atsdiyq) — Hiphil Imperfect 1st Singular of צדק (H6663): "I will declare righteous" — God speaking: He will NOT declare the guilty to be righteous. This is the divine boundary that makes Rom 4:5 ("him that justifieth the ungodly") astonishing.
Isaiah 53:11 (The Righteous Servant Justifying Many)¶
He shall see of the travail of his soul, and shall be satisfied: by his knowledge shall my righteous servant justify many; for he shall bear their iniquities.
Hebrew Parsing: Three tsadaq forms converge: - יַצְדִּיק (yatsdiyq) — Hiphil Imperfect 3ms of צדק (H6663): "he shall justify/declare righteous" (causative) - צַדִּיק (tsaddiyq, H6662) — adjective: "righteous" (describing the servant) - עַבְדִּי (avdi) — "my servant" The righteous one (tsaddiyq) shall declare righteous (yatsdiyq) many — by bearing (yisbol, Qal Imperfect of סבל) their iniquities (avonot).
Psalm 51:4 (God Vindicated When He Judges)¶
Hebrew v.4 is v.2 in English: "Wash me thoroughly from mine iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin." The tsadaq reference is at v.6 Hebrew / v.4 English: "Against thee, thee only, have I sinned, and done this evil in thy sight: that thou mightest be justified (tsadaq) when thou speakest, and be clear when thou judgest."
Primary Verses — Core Relational/Covenant Texts¶
Deuteronomy 6:25¶
And it shall be our righteousness (tsedaqah), if we observe to do all these commandments before the LORD our God, as he hath commanded us.
Genesis 18:19¶
For I know him, that he will command his children and his household after him, and they shall keep the way of the LORD, to do justice (tsedaqah) and judgment (mishpat); that the LORD may bring upon Abraham that which he hath spoken of him.
Micah 6:8¶
He hath shewed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the LORD require of thee, but to do justly (mishpat), and to love mercy (checed, H2617), and to walk humbly with thy God?
Luke 1:6¶
And they were both righteous (dikaios) before God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances (dikaioma, G1345) of the Lord blameless.
Psalm 103:17-18¶
But the mercy (checed) of the LORD is from everlasting to everlasting upon them that fear him, and his righteousness (tsedaqah) unto children's children; To such as keep his covenant, and to those that remember his commandments to do them.
Jeremiah 31:31-34 (The New Covenant)¶
31:31 Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah: 31:33 But this shall be the covenant that I will make... I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their God, and they shall be my people. 31:34 ...for I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more.
Primary Verses — Core Character/Conduct Texts¶
Ezekiel 18:1-32 (Full Chapter — Righteous Conduct Catalog)¶
18:5-9 But if a man be just (tsaddiyq), and do that which is lawful (mishpat) and right (tsedaqah), And hath not eaten upon the mountains, neither hath lifted up his eyes to the idols... neither hath defiled his neighbour's wife... And hath not oppressed any, but hath restored to the debtor his pledge, hath spoiled none by violence, hath given his bread to the hungry, and hath covered the naked with a garment; He that hath not given forth upon usury... hath executed true judgment between man and man, Hath walked in my statutes, and hath kept my judgments, to deal truly; he is just, he shall surely live, saith the Lord GOD. 18:24 But when the righteous turneth away from his righteousness, and committeth iniquity, and doeth according to all the abominations that the wicked man doeth, shall he live? All his righteousness that he hath done shall not be mentioned: in his trespass that he hath trespassed, and in his sin that he hath sinned, in them shall he die. 18:26-27 When a righteous man turneth away from his righteousness, and committeth iniquity, and dieth in them... Again, when the wicked man turneth away from his wickedness that he hath committed, and doeth that which is lawful and right, he shall save his soul alive.
1 John 3:1-24 (Full Chapter — Doing Righteousness)¶
3:7 Little children, let no man deceive you: he that doeth righteousness (dikaiosyne) is righteous (dikaios), even as he is righteous. 3:10 In this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil: whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of God, neither he that loveth not his brother.
Matthew 5:20¶
For I say unto you, That except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven.
Titus 2:11-12¶
For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men, Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world.
Galatians 5:22-23¶
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.
2 Corinthians 5:21¶
For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness (dikaiosyne) of God in him.
Greek Parsing: γενώμεθα (genometha) — Aorist Middle Subjunctive 1st Plural of γίνομαι (G1096): "that we might become" — not just declared righteous but actually become "the righteousness of God." δικαιοσύνη Θεοῦ (dikaiosyne theou) — "righteousness of God" — genitive can be source ("from God") or quality ("God's own righteousness").
Garment Texts¶
Isaiah 61:10¶
I will greatly rejoice in the LORD, my soul shall be joyful in my God; for he hath clothed me with the garments of salvation, he hath covered me with the robe of righteousness (tsedaqah), as a bridegroom decketh himself with ornaments, and as a bride adorneth herself with her jewels.
Zechariah 3:1-5 (The Garment Exchange)¶
3:1 And he shewed me Joshua the high priest standing before the angel of the LORD, and Satan standing at his right hand to resist him. 3:3 Now Joshua was clothed with filthy garments, and stood before the angel. 3:4 And he answered and spake unto those that stood before him, saying, Take away the filthy garments from him. And unto him he said, Behold, I have caused thine iniquity to pass from thee, and I will clothe thee with change of raiment. 3:5 And I said, Let them set a fair mitre upon his head. So they set a fair mitre upon his head, and clothed him with garments. 3:7 Thus saith the LORD of hosts; If thou wilt walk in my ways, and if thou wilt keep my charge, then thou shalt also judge my house
Revelation 19:8¶
And to her was granted that she should be arrayed in fine linen, clean and white: for the fine linen is the righteousness (dikaiomata, G1345, plural) of saints.
Greek Parsing: ἐδόθη (edothe) — Aorist Passive Indicative 3rd Singular of δίδωμι (G1325): divine passive — "it was granted" (by God). τὰ δικαιώματα τῶν ἁγίων (ta dikaiomata ton hagion) — "the righteous acts of the saints" — dikaiomata is PLURAL of dikaioma (G1345), meaning "righteous deeds/acts," NOT abstract righteousness (dikaiosyne). This is critical: the wedding garment is composed of actual righteous deeds, though these deeds are themselves "granted" (divine passive).
Matthew 22:11-14¶
22:11 And when the king came in to see the guests, he saw there a man which had not on a wedding garment: 22:12 And he saith unto him, Friend, how camest thou in hither not having a wedding garment? And he was speechless. 22:13 Then said the king to the servants, Bind him hand and foot, and take him away... into outer darkness
Job 29:14¶
I put on righteousness (tsedeq), and it clothed me: my judgment (mishpat) was as a robe and a diadem.
Sanctuary Bridge Texts¶
Leviticus 16:30 (kaphar → taher)¶
For on that day shall the priest make an atonement (kaphar, H3722) for you, to cleanse (taher, H2891) you, that ye may be clean (tahor) from all your sins before the LORD.
Daniel 9:24 (kaphar → tsedeq olamim)¶
Seventy weeks are determined upon thy people and upon thy holy city, to finish the transgression, and to make an end of sins, and to make reconciliation (lekhapper, from kaphar H3722) for iniquity, and to bring in everlasting righteousness (tsedeq olamim, H6664 + H5769), and to seal up the vision and prophecy, and to anoint the most Holy.
Hebrew Parsing: The six infinitives span from atonement vocabulary (lekhapper — Piel Infinitive Construct of kaphar) to righteousness vocabulary (tsedeq olamim). This is the ONLY verse that bridges both domains: atonement AND everlasting righteousness in the same prophetic sequence.
Daniel 8:14 (nitsdaq — the Niphal verdict)¶
And he said unto me, Unto two thousand and three hundred days; then shall the sanctuary be cleansed (nitsdaq).
Hebrew Parsing: נִצְדַּק (nitsdaq) — Niphal Perfect 3ms of צדק (H6663): "be vindicated/justified." This is the ONLY Niphal of tsadaq in the entire OT. KJV renders "cleansed" (influenced by Vulgate/Theodotion), but the Hebrew root is צדק (righteousness/vindication), NOT טהר (ritual cleansing). The sanctuary is the subject of passive vindication — declared righteous, not ritually purified.
Romans 3:25-26 (hilasterion → dikaios)¶
3:25 Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation (hilasterion, G2435) through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness (dikaiosyne)... 3:26 that he might be just (dikaios), and the justifier (dikaioo) of him which believeth in Jesus.
Three dik- family words converge: dikaiosyne (G1343), dikaios (G1342), dikaioo (G1344) — all in the context of hilasterion (mercy seat/propitiation). The sanctuary mercy seat becomes the ground of forensic justification.
Maintained/Lost Texts¶
Hebrews 10:26-29¶
10:26 For if we sin wilfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins, 10:27 But a certain fearful looking for of judgment and fiery indignation 10:29 Of how much sorer punishment, suppose ye, shall he be thought worthy, who hath trodden under foot the Son of God, and hath counted the blood of the covenant, wherewith he was sanctified, an unholy thing
Greek Parsing of Heb 10:26: ἁμαρτανόντων (hamartanonton) — Present Active Participle Genitive Plural Masculine of ἁμαρτάνω (G264): "while sinning" — present tense = ongoing, continuous, willful sinning (not isolated failure). The genitive absolute construction (ἑκουσίως... ἁμαρτανόντων ἡμῶν) = "while we are willfully [continuing to] sin."
2 Peter 2:20-22¶
2:20 For if after they have escaped the pollutions of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, they are again entangled therein, and overcome, the latter end is worse with them than the beginning. 2:21 For it had been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness (dikaiosyne), than, after they have known it, to turn from the holy commandment delivered unto them.
Romans 8:1-4 (Walking in the Spirit)¶
8:1 There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. 8:4 That the righteousness (dikaioma, G1345) of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.
1 John 1:7-9 (Confession and Cleansing)¶
1:7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin. 1:9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just (dikaios, G1342) to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness (adikia, G93).
Galatians 5:4-6 (Faith Working Through Love)¶
5:4 Christ is become of no effect unto you, whosoever of you are justified by the law; ye are fallen from grace. 5:6 For in Jesus Christ neither circumcision availeth any thing, nor uncircumcision; but faith which worketh by love.
