Romans 3:25-26

Rom 3:25

  • ὃν προέθετο (V-2AMI-3S, Aor Mid Ind of προτίθημι G4388) — "whom [God] set forth"
  • ἱλαστήριον (N-ASN, Acc Sg Neut of ἱλαστήριος G2435) — "propitiation/mercy seat"
  • διὰ πίστεως (Gen Sg Fem of πίστις G4102) — "through faith"
  • ἐν τῷ αὐτοῦ αἵματι (Dat Sg Neut of αἷμα G129) — "in his blood"
  • εἰς ἔνδειξιν (Acc Sg Fem of ἔνδειξις G1732) — "for a demonstration/proof"
  • τῆς δικαιοσύνης αὐτοῦ (Gen Sg Fem of δικαιοσύνη G1343) — "of his righteousness"
  • διὰ τὴν πάρεσιν (Acc Sg Fem of πάρεσις G3929) — "because of the passing over"
  • τῶν προγεγονότων ἁμαρτημάτων (Perf Act Ptcp Gen Pl Neut of προγίνομαι G4266) — "of the previously committed sins"

Rom 3:26

  • εἰς τὸ εἶναι αὐτὸν δίκαιον (A-ASM of δίκαιος G1342) — "that he might be just/righteous"
  • καὶ δικαιοῦντα (V-PAP-ASM, Pres Act Ptcp of δικαιόω G1344) — "and the justifier/one-declaring-righteous"
  • τὸν ἐκ πίστεως Ἰησοῦ — "the one [who is] out of faith of/in Jesus"

Key observation: ἱλαστήριον (hilasterion G2435, mercy seat / propitiation) appears in the SAME sentence as δίκαιον (just) + δικαιοῦντα (justifier). God is simultaneously the propitiation-provider AND the righteous-declarer. This is the NT equivalent of Dan 9:24's kaphar→tsedeq bridge.

δικαιοῦντα is a Present Active Participle (Accusative Singular Masculine) — describing an ongoing characteristic of God: "the one who is [continually] justifying."

Revelation 19:8

  • ἐδόθη (V-API-3S, Aor Pass Ind of δίδωμι G1325) — "it was granted" (divine passive — the giver is God)
  • αὐτῇ (Dat Sg Fem) — "to her" (the bride)
  • ἵνα περιβάληται (V-2AMS-3S, Aor Mid Subj of περιβάλλω G4016) — "that she might clothe herself"
  • βύσσινον λαμπρὸν καθαρόν (A-ASN of βύσσινος G1039, λαμπρός G2986, καθαρός G2513) — "fine linen, bright, clean/pure"
  • τὸ γὰρ βύσσινον τὰ δικαιώματα τῶν ἁγίων ἐστίν — "for the fine linen IS the righteous acts (δικαιώματα G1345) of the saints"

Key observation: ἐδόθη (edothe) is Aorist PASSIVE Indicative — divine passive. The fine linen was "granted" to her by God. Yet the fine linen IS (ἐστίν) the δικαιώματα (righteous acts/deeds) of the saints. Paradox: the garment is both divinely given AND constituted by the saints' righteous acts.

δικαιώματα (dikaiomata G1345) — Nominative Plural Neuter. Not δικαιοσύνη (abstract righteousness) but δικαιώματα (concrete righteous acts/ordinances). The plural form emphasizes the individual righteous deeds.

καθαρός (katharos G2513) — "clean/pure" — the LXX equivalent of tahor (H2889). The garment imagery combines BOTH cleansing (katharos) AND righteousness (dikaiomata) in a single image.

Revelation 7:14

  • ἔπλυναν (V-AAI-3P, Aor Act Ind of πλύνω G4150) — "they washed"
  • τὰς στολὰς αὐτῶν (Acc Pl Fem of στολή G4749) — "their robes"
  • ἐλεύκαναν (V-AAI-3P, Aor Act Ind of λευκαίνω G3021) — "they made white"
  • αὐτὰς (Acc Pl Fem) — "them"
  • ἐν τῷ αἵματι τοῦ Ἀρνίου (Dat Sg Neut of αἷμα G129) — "in the blood of the Lamb"

Key observation: Two aorist verbs in sequence — "washed" AND "made white." Both are Aorist Active Indicative — completed actions. The paradox: robes made white (λευκαίνω, "to whiten") IN blood (ἐν τῷ αἵματι). Blood normally stains; here it whitens. This inverts the natural order.

πλύνω (G4150) is the LXX equivalent of כבס (kabas, wash garments) — the standard Levitical purification act. λευκαίνω (G3021) adds the visual result — brilliance/purity.
