Word Studies¶
From Word Studies Library¶
kaphar (H3722) — Atonement/Covering¶
Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/H3722-kaphar.md
- 102 OT occurrences; Piel dominates (92/102 = 90%)
- 67 in Leviticus alone (66% of all occurrences)
- Core pattern: priest makes atonement at altar using blood for sin/iniquity, resulting in forgiveness (salach) or cleansing (taher)
- Key collocations: chattaah (38x), kohen (27x), mizbeach (17x), dam (12x), salach (12x), taher (12x)
- LXX: hilaskomai (G2433, PMI 6.47), aphiemi (G863, 14x), katharizo (G2511, 14x)
- Dan 9:24 is the ONLY verse where kaphar and tsedeq appear together
- See WG-atonement.md for full concept cluster
tsadaq (H6663) — Be Righteous/Vindicate¶
Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/H6663-tsadaq.md
- 41 occurrences in 13 books; Job dominates (23/41 = 56%)
- Stem distribution: Qal 22, Hiphil 12, Piel 5, Niphal 1, Hithpael 1
- The single Niphal = Dan 8:14 (nitsdaq qodesh) — the only Niphal of tsadaq in the entire OT
- Hiphil = forensic declaration (Deu 25:1 "justify the righteous and condemn the wicked")
- Dan 12:3 matsdiqey = Hiphil participle "turn many to righteousness" — same root as nitsdaq
- Critical finding for this study: tsadaq NEVER appears in Leviticus. It is absent from all sanctuary ritual contexts. Distribution is Job (23), Isaiah (8), Psalms (5), Daniel (4), Genesis (3), Ezekiel (3), Exodus (2), then scattered singles. This confirms Bohr's claim that tsadaq is "not connected with the ritual of the sanctuary but rather is a legal term."
- LXX: dikaioo (G1344, 21x), dikaios (G1342, 22x)
- See TR-tsadaq-dikaioo.md for cross-testament trace
taher (H2891) — Be Clean/Purify¶
Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/H2891-taher.md
- 94 occurrences; Leviticus dominates (53/94 = 56%)
- Stem distribution: Piel 37 (factitive cleansing), Qal 34 (stative "be clean"), Hithpael 18 (self-purification), Pual 1
- The DOA result verb: Lev 16:30 kaphar → taher formula
- Key collocations: kohen (25x), kabas (13x), beged (13x), kaphar (12x)
- Taher appears 12x with kaphar, establishing the atonement-to-cleansing sequence
- LXX: katharizo (G2511, 61x primary), katharos (G2513, 23x)
- See TR-taher-katharizo.md for cross-testament trace
tsaddiq (H6662) — Righteous/Just (Adjective)¶
Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/H6662-tsaddiyq.md
- 197 unique verses (210 tokens) across 25 books
- Proverbs (66v) and Psalms (50v) = 59% of all occurrences
- Dominant usage: antithetical parallelism with rasha "wicked" (81 verses = 41%)
- Applied to God in Dan 9:14: "the LORD our God is righteous in all his works"
- LXX: dikaios (G1342, 182x) — overwhelmingly dominant
tsedaqah (H6666) — Righteousness (Noun)¶
Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/H6666-tsedaqah.md
- 150 unique verses (165 tokens); Isaiah (34) and Psalms (34) dominant
- Most frequent collocation: mishpat (46x) — "judgment and righteousness" as hendiadys
- Dan 9:7 "O Lord, righteousness belongeth unto thee"
- Dan 9:24 uses tsedeq (H6664, masculine), not tsedaqah, for "everlasting righteousness"
- LXX: dikaiosyne (G1343, 129x = 86% of renderings)
hilasterion (G2435) — Propitiation/Mercy Seat¶
Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/G2435-hilasterion.md
- 2 NT occurrences: Rom 3:25 ("propitiation") and Heb 9:5 ("mercyseat")
- The SAME Greek word renders both the physical mercy seat and Christ as the propitiatory
- LXX renders Hebrew kapporeth (H3727) as hilasterion (16x with PMI 9.75)
- Rom 3:25 collocates with haima (blood), pistis (faith), dikaiosyne (righteousness)
- This is the NT bridge verse: hilasterion (=kapporeth, DOA vocabulary) paired with dikaiosyne (=tsedeq, vindication vocabulary)
dikaios (G1342) — Just/Righteous (Adjective)¶
Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/G1342-dikaios.md
- 81 NT occurrences; primary Greek equivalent of tsaddiq (H6662)
- Rom 3:26 "that he might be just [dikaios], and the justifier [dikaiounta] of him which believeth"
- Rev 15:3 "just and true are thy ways"
- Rev 16:7 "true and righteous [dikaios] are thy judgments"
- Rev 19:2 "true and righteous [dikaios] are his judgments"
dikaiosis (G1347) — Justification¶
Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/G1347-dikaiosis.md
- 2 NT occurrences, both in Romans (4:25 and 5:18)
- Rom 4:25: "raised again for our justification" — pairs with paraptoma (offences)
- Rom 5:18: "justification of life" — antithetical to katakrima (condemnation)
- -sis suffix = act/process of justifying (distinct from -ma = result/product)
- Exclusively Pauline; not in LXX at all
- This is the terminal NT noun in the kaphar-to-tsadaq bridge
bad (H906) — Linen¶
Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/H906-bad.md
- 19 unique verses (23 tokens) across 7 books
- Three domains: priestly garments (Exo, Lev), prophetic vision figures (Ezek, Dan), worship narrative (1-2 Sam, 1 Chr)
- DOA: Lev 16:4 "holy linen coat... linen breeches... linen girdle... linen mitre"
- Vision figures: Ezek 9:2 and Dan 10:5 "clothed in linen"
- LXX: endyo G1746 (clothe, 14x), stole G4749 (robe, 7x), poderes G4158 (reaching to feet, 3x)
- Rev 1:13 uses poderes for the risen Christ — same LXX word used for bad garments
lebush (A3831) — Garment (Aramaic)¶
Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/A3831-lbuwsh.md
- 2 verses only (Dan 3:21 and Dan 7:9) — exclusively Aramaic Daniel
- Dan 7:9: "whose garment [lebusheh] was white [chivvar] as snow"
- Cognate of Hebrew lebush (H3830) from root l-b-sh (same as labash H3847 "to clothe")
- NOT the same root as bad (H906). Bad comes from the b-d root (divided fibres/flaxen). Lebush comes from l-b-sh (to clothe). The garment vocabulary chain from Lev 16 to Dan 7 breaks lexically at this transition.
- LXX (Theodotion): endyma (G1742) for Dan 7:9's garment
chuwr (H2353) — White Linen¶
Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/H2353-chuwr.md
- 2 verses only (Est 1:6 and Est 8:15) — exclusively Esther, Persian court context
- From root chavar (H2357) "to blanch, be white"
- Dan 7:9 uses chivvar (H2358, Aramaic adjective "white"), NOT chuwr (H2353, Hebrew noun "white linen")
- H2358 chivvar is the Aramaic cognate of H2357 chavar — same root family but different language and different part of speech
- The word study agent correctly noted this distinction: Dan 7:9's "white" is H2358 chivvar (Aramaic adjective), not H2353 chuwr (Hebrew noun for white fabric)
anan (A6050) — Cloud (Aramaic)¶
Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/A6050-anan.md
- HAPAX LEGOMENON — appears only in Dan 7:13
- Aramaic cognate of Hebrew anan (H6051, 80 verses)
- Dan 7:13: "one like the Son of man came with the clouds [ananey] of heaven"
- LXX/Theodotion: nephele (G3507) — same Greek word used for H6051 throughout OT
- NT carries the Dan 7:13 imagery via nephele: Mat 24:30, 26:64; Mark 13:26, 14:62; Rev 1:7, 14:14
anan (H6051) — Cloud (Hebrew)¶
Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/H6051-anan.md
- 80 verses across 18 books; 44% in wilderness narrative alone
- Lev 16:2: "I will appear in the cloud [anan] upon the mercy seat"
- Lev 16:13: "the cloud of the incense" — here qetoreth cloud, not anan
- Note: Lev 16:2 uses H6051 anan for God's presence-cloud on the mercy seat. Dan 7:13 uses A6050 anan (Aramaic cognate). Different language forms of the same root.
esh (H784) — Fire¶
Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/H784-esh.md
- 348 unique verses (400 tokens) across 33 books
- Leviticus 30 occurrences, including Lev 16:12 "burning coals of fire [esh] from off the altar"
- Dan 7:9-10 uses Aramaic nur (not H784 esh) for fire: "fiery flame" and "burning fire" and "fiery stream"
- Different vocabulary: esh (Hebrew) in Lev 16:12 vs. nur (Aramaic) in Dan 7:9-10. Not the same word.
Word Groups and Translation Relationships¶
WG-atonement.md¶
Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/WG-atonement.md
Core cluster: kaphar (action) → chattaah (offering) → dam (instrument) → kohen (agent) → mizbeach (location) → salach (divine response, daily) / taher (result, annual). NT: hilaskomai / hilasmos / hilasterion.
WG-garment.md¶
Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/WG-garment.md
Generic: beged (H899, 190v). Specific types: kethoneth (undertunic), simlah (outer wrap), lebuwsh (literary/poetic). Verb: labash (H3847, to clothe). LXX collapses multiple Hebrew terms → himation (G2440).
WG-cloud.md¶
Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/WG-cloud.md
Primary: anan (H6051, 80v nimbus/divine-presence); ab (H5645, 32v thick/storm). Aramaic: anan (A6050, 1v hapax). Greek collapses both → nephele (G3507). The Hebrew distinction between anan (theophanic) and ab (meteorological/poetic) is lost in Greek translation.
TR-tsadaq-dikaioo.md¶
Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/TR-tsadaq-dikaioo.md
The LXX translates tsadaq → dikaioo 21x, establishing the justification bridge. Key shift: Hebrew tsadaq covers 5 stems (Qal = be righteous, Hiphil = declare, Piel = prove, Niphal = be vindicated); Greek dikaioo narrows primarily to forensic declaration. The Niphal (Dan 8:14, vindication) has no direct NT parallel via dikaioo — cosmic vindication uses different NT vocabulary.
TR-taher-katharizo.md¶
Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/TR-taher-katharizo.md
taher → katharizo with 61/94 consistency. Full semantic range transfers: ritual, moral, spiritual cleansing. Blood remains the primary instrument (Lev 16 → Heb 9). Heb 9:23: "the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices" uses katharizo, confirming heavenly purification language.
WG-righteousness.md and WG-judgment.md¶
Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/WG-righteousness.md and WG-judgment.md
Righteousness: tsadaq family (H6662-3-4-6) → dik- family (G1342-3-4-5-7). Judgment: mishpat (H4941), shaphat (H8199), din (A1780) → krisis (G2920), krima (G2917).
WG-defilement.md¶
Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/WG-defilement.md
Three-category formula (Lev 16:16): tumot (uncleannesses), pesha (transgressions), chattat (sins). The DOA addresses all three under one rite.
Aramaic Judicial Vocabulary (from Library)¶
diyn (A1780) — To Judge¶
Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/A1780-diyn.md
Dan 7:10: dina yetib — "the judgment sat/was convened." Technical judicial formula. Also Dan 7:22 "judgment was given to the saints." Dan 7:26 "the judgment shall sit."
cphar (A5609) — Book/Scroll¶
Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/A5609-cphar.md
Dan 7:10: siphryn petiychu — "books were opened." Persian court-archive associations. The plural form suggests multiple record books, not a single document.
rmah (A7412) — To Place/Set¶
Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/A7412-rmah.md
Dan 7:9: korsavan remiyu — "thrones were placed." Peil (passive) perfect 3mp. The Peil stem = Aramaic passive (equivalent to Hebrew Niphal/Pual). The "thrones" are plural — a tribunal, not a single seat.
Vocabulary Mismatch Documentation¶
Element-by-Element Vocabulary Comparison¶
| Element | Lev 16 | Dan 7 | Same Root? | Type |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| White garments | bad (H906) | lebus (A3831) + chivvar (H2358) | NO — different roots (b-d vs. l-b-sh) and different languages | Thematic |
| Fire | esh (H784) | nur (Aramaic) | NO — different roots and different languages | Thematic |
| Cloud | anan (H6051) in 16:2 | anan (A6050) in 7:13 | YES — Aramaic cognate of Hebrew anan, same root | Lexical (cognate) |
| Judicial function | kaphar + tumot/pesha/chattat (16:16) | dina yetib + siphryn (7:10) | NO — entirely different vocabulary systems | Structural/Functional |
| Exclusion | "no man" in tabernacle (16:17) | no direct Dan 7 parallel; Rev 15:8 | NO — different vocabulary; requires Revelation as bridge | Thematic |
Result: Of five parallels, only the cloud element shares a cognate root (H6051/A6050). The other four use entirely different vocabulary. The parallel is structural/thematic, not lexical/intertextual. This confirms Series Insight #5.
