Question

Are the little horns of Daniel 7 and Daniel 8 the same entity? Vocabulary comparison across the two chapters.

From Word Studies Library

Horn Vocabulary

qeren (H7161) — Hebrew Horn

Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/H7161-qeren.md

  • 69 unique verses, 85 tokens across 21 books
  • 97% rendered "horn/horns" in KJV
  • Highest density in Daniel (2.2/100v)
  • Used in Dan 8 (Hebrew section): Dan 8:3,5,6,7,8,9,20,21
  • Semantic categories: physical horn, altar horn, oil flask, figurative power, prophetic/apocalyptic symbol, peak/ray
  • Prophetic usage: Zech 1:18-21 (four horns = scattering powers), Dan 8:3-9,20-21 (ram/goat/little horn)
  • LXX: κέρας (keras, G2768) — 60 co-occurrences, PMI 8.23

qeren (A7162) — Aramaic Horn

Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/A7162-qeren.md

  • 10 unique verses, 21 tokens — Daniel only (chapters 3 and 7)
  • Used in Dan 7 (Aramaic section): Dan 7:7,8,11,20,21,24
  • Dan 7:8 alone has 4 tokens of qeren
  • Co-occurs with rabrab (H7260) at 40% — "great words" of the little horn's boasting
  • LXX: κέρας (keras, G2768) — same Greek rendering as H7161
  • Key distinction: Dan 7 uses A7162 (Aramaic), Dan 8 uses H7161 (Hebrew). Same word, different language register. The language shift from Aramaic to Hebrew between chapters 7 and 8 is the structural divide, not a difference in referent.

Greatness / Magnification Vocabulary

gadal (H1431) — "to be great, magnify"

Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/H1431-gadal.md

  • 111 unique verses, 153 tokens across 31 books
  • Daniel has 9 occurrences at 2.5/100v — striking concentration
  • Verb stem distribution: Qal 54, Hiphil 33, Piel 25, Hithpael 4
  • In Daniel 8: Dan 8:4 (ram "became great" — Hiphil), 8:8 (goat "waxed very great" — Hiphil), 8:9 (horn "waxed exceeding great" — Qal), 8:10 (horn "waxed great" — Qal), 8:11 (horn "magnified himself" — Hiphil), 8:25 (horn "magnify himself in his heart" — Hiphil)
  • In Daniel 11: 11:36-37 — Hithpael yithgaddel ("shall magnify himself")
  • Self-exaltation uses always condemned: Isa 10:15, Jer 48:26,42, Zeph 2:8,10
  • LXX: megaluno (G3170) — 56 co-occurrences

Dan 8 gadal progression (from sv-06): 1. Ram "became great" (higdil, 8:4) 2. Goat "waxed very great" (higdil ad-meod, 8:8) 3. Horn "waxed exceeding great" (tigdal-yether, 8:9) — surpasses BOTH named empires

yether (H3499) — "remainder, excess, exceedingly"

Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/H3499-yether.md

  • 95 unique verses across 26 books
  • 65% = "the rest of" (regnal archive formula)
  • 5% = "excellency / exceeding" — rare but early (Gen 49:3)
  • Dan 8:9 — "which waxed exceeding great" (tigdal-yether). The noun yether functions adverbially to intensify the verb gadal. This is the only prophetic use of yether as "exceedingly."
  • The yether requirement: the horn must grow BEYOND the greatness of both the ram (Medo-Persia) and the goat (Greece). Only Rome satisfies this — Antiochus Epiphanes was a minor Seleucid king who never exceeded either empire.

mits'eirah (H4704) — "littleness" (HAPAX)

Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/H4704-mitstsiyrah.md

  • HAPAX LEGOMENON — appears only in Dan 8:9
  • Feminine of H4705 (mits'ar), compound: min + tsa'ir (small/young/least)
  • Marks "from smallness" — the starting point of something that expands dramatically
  • Contrast with tigdal-yether is the whole point: from utter insignificance to surpassing greatness
  • Compare Dan 7:8: ze'irah (A2191) = "small" (Aramaic adjective). Dan 7 uses a common Aramaic adjective. Dan 8 uses a Hebrew hapax noun emphasizing origin from smallness. Both describe the same initial condition but Dan 8 uses a rarer, more emphatic form.

rabrab (H7260) — "very great" (Aramaic)

Source: Fresh lookup (no library entry)

  • 8 occurrences, all in Daniel's Aramaic sections (Dan 2-7)
  • Reduplicative form of rab: rab + rab = "very great, huge"
  • 75% rendered "great," 12.5% "great things," 12.5% "very great things"
  • Dan 7:7 "great iron teeth" (rabr'van) — the fourth beast
  • Dan 7:8 "a mouth speaking great things" (pum memalil rabrevan)
  • Dan 7:11 "the voice of the great words which the horn spake" (rabrevan)
  • Dan 7:20 "a mouth that spake very great things" (rabrevan)
  • Dan 7:3 "four great beasts" — describes the beasts themselves
  • This is the Aramaic greatness vocabulary that parallels Hebrew gadal in Dan 8. The horn in Dan 7 SPEAKS great things (rabrab); the horn in Dan 8 DOES/BECOMES great things (gadal). Same concept, different language.
  • Co-occurs with A7162 qeren at 40% — directly linked to the horn imagery.

Dan 8 Unique Targets (Absent from Dan 7)

tamid (H8548) — "continual, daily"

Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/H8548-tamid.md

  • 104 occurrences. Fundamentally a temple/worship term.
  • In Daniel: 5 occurrences (Dan 8:11, 8:13, 11:31, 12:11 — plus Dan 8:12 if counted)
  • Used substantively as "the tamid" (the continual service) — unique to Daniel's apocalyptic usage
  • 100% positive across all 104 OT occurrences — the tamid is always presented as something good that should continue
  • Key point: tamid is ENTIRELY ABSENT from Dan 7. The horn's attack on the continual service is a Dan 8 innovation. This is the core of what Dan 8 ADDS to Dan 7.
  • Top collocations: olah (burnt offering) 26x, panim (before the LORD) 26x, minchah (meal offering) 16x

qodesh (H6944) — "holiness, sanctuary"

Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/H6944-qodesh.md

  • 452 occurrences. Heavily concentrated in Pentateuch (47%) and Ezekiel (51).
  • Daniel has 12 occurrences at 3.4/100v
  • Dan 8:13 — "to give both the sanctuary (qodesh) and the host to be trodden under foot"
  • Dan 8:14 — "then shall the sanctuary (qodesh) be cleansed (nitsdaq)"
  • Key point: qodesh is ABSENT from Dan 7. The sanctuary as a target of attack and the object of vindication is unique to Dan 8.
  • LXX: hagios (G40) — 346 co-occurrences (77%), one of the tightest Hebrew-Greek mappings

emeth (H571) — "truth, faithfulness"

Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/H571-emeth.md

  • 125 unique verses across 23 books
  • Daniel: 6 occurrences at 1.7/100v
  • Dan 8:12 — "it cast down the truth (emeth) to the ground" — truth as a target of the horn
  • Dan 8:26 — "the vision of the evening and the morning which was told is true (emeth)"
  • Dan 10:1, 10:21, 11:2 — in the prophetic certainty sense
  • Key point: emeth as a TARGET of horn attack is unique to Dan 8. Dan 7 does not mention truth being attacked. This is a progressive revelation addition.
  • Dual sense: truth (cognitive/propositional) + faithfulness (relational/covenantal)

pasha (H6586) — "to rebel, transgress"

Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/H6586-pasha.md

  • 50 tokens in 37 unique verses across 14 books
  • Core idea: breach against rightful rule
  • Dan 8:12 — "by reason of transgression" (be-pesha) — the mechanism enabling the horn's attack
  • Dan 8:13 — "the transgression of desolation" (ha-pesha shomem) — the desolating transgression
  • Dan 8:23 — "when the transgressors are come to the full" (ke-hatem ha-posh'im)
  • Key point: pesha/pasha vocabulary is ABSENT from Dan 7. The concept of transgression as a mechanism/cause of the horn's power is unique to Dan 8.

tsadaq (H6663) — "to be righteous, vindicate"

Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/H6663-tsadaq.md

  • 41 occurrences. Job dominates with 56%.
  • Verb stem distribution: Qal 22, Hiphil 12, Piel 5, Niphal 1, Hithpael 1
  • The sole Niphal: Dan 8:14 — ve-nitsdaq qodesh ("then shall the sanctuary be cleansed/vindicated")
  • This is the ONLY Niphal of tsadaq in the entire OT — a unique form for a unique event
  • Forensic/judicial vocabulary: collocates with mishpat (8x), shaphat (8x), tsaddiq (7x), rasha (6x)
  • Key point: tsadaq is ENTIRELY ABSENT from Dan 7. The verdict (nitsdaq) is unique to Dan 8. Dan 7 provides the judicial PROCESS (diyn, A1780 — thrones, books, court); Dan 8 provides the judicial VERDICT (nitsdaq). They are complementary.

Dan 7 Unique Vocabulary (Absent from Dan 8)

diyn (A1780) — "judgment" (Aramaic)

Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/A1780-diyn.md

  • 5 unique verses: Dan 7:10, 7:22, 7:26 (+ Dan 4:37, Ezra 7:26)
  • All 5 rendered "judgment" in KJV
  • Dan 7:10 — "the judgment was set (diyna yethib), and the books were opened"
  • Dan 7:22 — "judgment was given to the saints of the most High"
  • Dan 7:26 — "the judgment shall sit, and they shall take away his dominion"
  • Three stages: judgment SET (7:10) -> judgment GIVEN to saints (7:22) -> judgment ACTS against dominion (7:26)
  • Key point: diyn is ABSENT from Dan 8. Dan 7 provides the full courtroom drama (thrones, Ancient of Days, books, river of fire, attendant hosts). Dan 8 provides the verdict (nitsdaq) without the courtroom scene.

bla (A1080) — "wear out" (Aramaic HAPAX)

Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/A1080-bla.md

  • HAPAX LEGOMENON — appears only in Dan 7:25
  • Pael stem (intensive active): yeballe = "he shall wear out"
  • Hebrew cognate H1086 balah = physical decay (garments, body). Aramaic narrows to mental/spiritual attrition.
  • "Shall wear out the saints" — prolonged, relentless harassment over time
  • Theodotion LXX: katatripsei (from katatriboo — to wear away by rubbing)
  • Key point: This specific verb for prolonged attrition is unique to Dan 7. Dan 8:24 describes destruction (yashchit, H7843 Hiphil) and Dan 8:10 describes casting down (tappel, H5307 Hiphil), but neither captures the sustained grinding-down of bla.

shna (A8133) — "to change, alter" (Aramaic)

Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/A8133-shna.md

  • 21 unique verses (26 tokens), all in Daniel's Aramaic sections + Ezra 6
  • Dan 7:25 Haphel: "think to change (le-hashnayah) times and laws"
  • Dan 2:21 Haphel: "he changeth (me-hashneh) the times and the seasons" — GOD as subject
  • The contrast: God actually changes times (2:21); the horn merely THINKS to change them (7:25 — yisbar, "intend/think")
  • Dan 7:3,7,19,23,24 — "diverse" (Peal) — the fourth beast is categorically different
  • Key point: The "change times and laws" formula is unique to Dan 7:25. Dan 8 does not use shna vocabulary. Instead, Dan 8 describes REMOVAL of the tamid and CASTING DOWN of the sanctuary — different vocabulary for related actions.

iddan (A5732) — "time" (Aramaic)

Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/A5732-iddan.md

  • 15 occurrences, all in Aramaic Daniel (Dan 2-7)
  • Dan 7:25 — "a time (iddan) and times (iddanin) and half a time (pelag iddan)" = 3.5 years
  • This is the prophetic time formula. Dan 8:14 gives a different time: "2300 evening-morning"
  • Dan 7:25 parallels Dan 12:7 (Hebrew mo'ed replaces Aramaic iddan)
  • Key point: iddan time formula is unique to Dan 7. Dan 8 uses erev boqer (evening-morning) as its time unit — a different scale, a different framework.

Shared Forensic Vocabulary (Bridging Dan 7 and 8)

mishpat (H4941) — "judgment, justice"

Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/H4941-mishpat.md

  • 406 unique verses (448 tokens) across 31 books
  • The broader Hebrew term for the full judicial process (verdict, act, place, suit, penalty)
  • Collocates with tsadaq (H6663) at 8x — forensic partnership
  • Dan 7 uses Aramaic diyn (A1780); Dan 8 uses Hebrew nitsdaq (H6663 Niphal). Mishpat bridges them as the shared judicial concept family.

shaphat (H8199) — "to judge"

Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/H8199-shaphat.md (library entry exists)

  • Verbal form of the judgment concept
  • Connects to the broader judgment word group (WG-judgment.md)

  • Rev 13:5 megala = "great things" = Theodotion rendering of Dan 7:8 rabrevan
  • Semantic overlap confirmed: both gadal/gadol (Hebrew) and rabrab (Aramaic) map to megas (Greek)

Word Groups

WG-greatness — Greatness / Magnify

Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/WG-greatness.md

  • Members: gadal (H1431), gadol (H1419), gedullah (H1420), rab (H7227), rabah (H7235)
  • Key distinction: gadal = growth in stature/honor (vertical); rab = abundance in quantity (horizontal)
  • LXX bridge: gadal/gadol -> megas/megaluno; rab/rabah -> polys/plethyno
  • Self-magnification (arrogance): Dan 8:4,11 — the horn magnifies itself (gadal Hiphil/Hithpael)

WG-judgment — Greek Judgment Word Group

Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/WG-judgment.md

  • krisis (G2920) = process/act; krima (G2917) = verdict/sentence; krino (G2919) = action; krites (G2923) = judge
  • Rev 19:2 — "true and righteous are his judgments (kriseis): for he hath judged (ekrinen) the great whore"
  • The Greek judgment vocabulary maps to both Hebrew mishpat and Aramaic diyn

WG-vision — Prophetic Vision

Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/WG-vision.md

  • chazon (H2377) + mar'eh (H4758): the core distinction in Dan 8
  • Dan 8:1-2 — Daniel receives a chazon and describes what he sees in the mar'eh
  • chazon = the revelatory content; mar'eh = the visual form seen
  • Both map to Greek horasis (G3706) — the LXX flattens the Hebrew distinction

WG-continual-worship — Continual Worship

Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/WG-continual-worship.md

  • tamid (H8548) = the qualifier; olah (H5930) = primary offering; minchah (H4503) = grain; nesek (H5262) = drink; chattaah (H2403) = sin offering; lechem (H3899) = showbread
  • tamid co-occurs with olah 26x — "continual burnt offering" is the core phrase
  • The Dan 8 horn attacks the ENTIRE tamid system, not just one offering

WG-holiness — Holiness

Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/WG-holiness.md

  • qodesh (H6944), qadash (H6942), qadowsh (H6918), miqdash (H4720), qaddish (H6922 Aramaic)
  • Dan 7 uses qaddish (Aramaic: "holy ones" = saints): Dan 7:18,21,22,25,27
  • Dan 8 uses qodesh (Hebrew: "sanctuary/holiness"): Dan 8:13,14
  • Dan 8 also uses qadowsh (Hebrew: "holy" people): Dan 8:24
  • The holiness vocabulary shifts from PERSONS (Dan 7 saints) to PLACE (Dan 8 sanctuary) — progressive revelation of the target

Fresh Lookups (No Library Entry)

azaz (H5810) — "to be strong, prevail"

Source: Fresh lookup via search_strongs.py

  • 12 biblical occurrences (BLB count), 16 total translation entries
  • Primitive root: "to be stout, harden, prevail, strengthen"
  • Translations: prevailed (2x), strengthen (2x), strong is, impudent, hardeneth, etc.
  • Biblical usage: Jdg 3:10; 6:2; Psa 9:20; 52:9; 68:29; 89:14; Pro 7:13; 8:28; 21:29; Ecc 7:19; Isa 30:2; Dan 11:12
  • Dan 8:24 uses a different word: atsam (H6105) "shall be mighty" (ve-atsam kocho — "his power shall be mighty"). NOT azaz. The PROMPT.md listed azaz, but the parser shows Dan 8:24 uses atsam.
  • Dan 8:23 uses az (H5794, adjective from azaz root): "a king of fierce countenance" (melek az-paniym). This is the construct chain az paniym that appears ONLY here and in Deu 28:50.

rabrab (H7260) — "very great" (Aramaic)

Source: Fresh lookup via search_strongs.py (see above under Greatness vocabulary)

aphes (H656) — "to cease, come to an end"

Source: Fresh lookup via search_strongs.py

  • 6 total occurrences (5 per BLB)
  • Primitive root: "to disappear, cease, be clean gone, fail, be brought to nought"
  • Gen 47:15,16; Psa 77:9; Isa 16:4; 29:20
  • The NOUN form efes (H657) appears in Dan 8:25: be-efes yad = "without hand" (literally "in cessation/end of hand")
  • efes (H657) = "end, nothing, cessation" — 45 occurrences. Dan 8:25 uses this noun, not the verb H656.
  • Dan 2:34,45 (Aramaic): di-la bidayin = "not by hands" — same concept, different language
  • The be-efes yad / di-la bidayin parallel is a divine destruction formula: the horn/image is broken by non-human agency. This connects Dan 8:25 to Dan 2:34,45 and to the divine judgment of Dan 7:11,26.

yad (H3027) — "hand" (Hebrew)

Source: Fresh lookup via search_strongs.py

  • 1,734 total occurrences — one of the most common nouns in Hebrew
  • Dan 8:4 — "none could deliver out of his hand" (ram's power)
  • Dan 8:7 — "none that could deliver the ram out of his hand" (goat's power)
  • Dan 8:25 — "he shall cause craft to prosper in his hand" + "broken without hand" (be-efes yad)
  • The "hand" vocabulary in Dan 8 tracks the transfer of power: ram's hand -> goat's hand -> horn's hand -> broken WITHOUT hand (divine intervention)

yad (A3028) — "hand" (Aramaic)

Source: Fresh lookup — no data found in database for A3028

  • Dan 2:34 — "a stone was cut out without hands" (di-la bidayin)
  • Dan 2:45 — "the stone was cut out of the mountain without hands" (di-la bidayin)
  • Dan 7:25 — "they shall be given into his hand" (bideh) — the saints delivered to the horn's authority
  • The Aramaic "hand" in Dan 7:25 (bideh) parallels the Hebrew "hand" in Dan 8:25 (yado/be-efes yad)

Dan 11 Bridge Vocabulary (Blends Both)

Dan 11 Term From Dan 7 From Dan 8
yithgaddel (11:36, Hithpael gadal) cf. 7:20 "stout" = 8:11 higdil
niplao't (11:36) cf. 7:25 millin rabrevan = 8:24 niplao't
yitsliach (11:36) — = 8:12,24 hitsliach

Dan 11:31-36 freely mixes vocabulary that belongs to Dan 7 AND Dan 8. This would be incoherent if the two chapters described different entities. Dan 11 treats the horn of Dan 7 and the horn of Dan 8 as a single subject.
