Question¶
Are the little horns of Daniel 7 and Daniel 8 the same entity? What textual evidence connects them? Compare shared characteristics, targets, timeline, vocabulary. How does progressive revelation intensify from chapter 7 to 8? Why are both visions needed?
Topics¶
HORN¶
- Used to contain the anointing oil: 1SA 16:1; 1KI 1:39
- Used for a trumpet (see TRUMPET)
- FIGURATIVE: Of divine protection 2SA 22:3; Of power 1KI 22:11; PSA 89:24; 92:10; 132:17
- SYMBOLICAL: DAN 7:7-24; DAN 8:3-9,20; AMO 6:13; MIC 4:13; HAB 3:4; ZEC 1:18-21; REV 5:6; REV 12:3; REV 13:1,11; REV 17:3-16
- Horns of the altar (see ALTAR)
Key observation: Nave's groups Dan 7:7-24 and Dan 8:3-9,20 together under the same SYMBOLICAL heading. The topical dictionary treats the horns of Dan 7 and Dan 8 as belonging to the same symbolic category. The Revelation horns (5:6; 12:3; 13:1,11; 17:3-16) are also grouped here, confirming the NT continuation of Daniel's horn imagery.
ANTICHRIST¶
- General scriptures concerning: MAT 24:5,23,24,26; MRK 13:6,21,22; LUK 21:8; 2TH 2:3-12; 1JN 2:18,22; 4:3; 2JN 1:7
- To be destroyed: REV 19:20; 20:10,15
Key observation: The ANTICHRIST topic links 2TH 2:3-12 (man of sin) directly alongside the Johannine epistles and Revelation. Paul's "man of sin" passage fuses Daniel 7 and 8 vocabulary (see Focus Area 9 in PROMPT.md).
BLASPHEMY¶
- Prophecy of: REV 13:1,5,6; 16:9,11,21; 17:3
- General scriptures include: DAN 7:25; DAN 11:36,37; 2TH 2:3,4
- The man of sin: 2TH 2:3,4
Key observation: Nave's places DAN 7:25 in the BLASPHEMY topic alongside DAN 11:36,37 and 2TH 2:3,4. This confirms the topical dictionary treats the horn's speech in Dan 7:25 ("great words against the most High") as blasphemous speech. Rev 13:5 ("a mouth speaking great things and blasphemies") is in the prophecy subcategory. The vocabulary chain runs: Dan 7:8 (mouth speaking great things) -> Dan 7:25 (great words against the most High) -> Rev 13:5 (mouth speaking great things and blasphemies).
JUDGMENT (THE GENERAL)¶
Key references: 1CH 16:33; PSA 9:7; 50:3-6; 96:13; ECC 3:17; 12:14; DAN 7:9,10; MAT 3:12; ROM 2:5-10; 2CO 5:10; REV 20:11-15
Key observation: Nave's lists Dan 7:9-10 as part of the GENERAL JUDGMENT alongside Revelation 20:11-15 (great white throne). This confirms that the judgment scene of Dan 7 is not a local or limited event but belongs to the eschatological general judgment.
PERSECUTION (OF THE RIGHTEOUS)¶
Key references include: DAN 3:8-23; DAN 6; PSA 44:22; MAT 24:8-10; REV 2:3,10,13; REV 6:9-11; REV 12:11; REV 17:6; REV 20:4
Instances include: the three Hebrew young men (DAN 3:8-23), Daniel (DAN 6)
Key observation: Although Dan 7:25 ("wear out the saints") is not explicitly listed under PERSECUTION, the BLASPHEMY topic captures it. The persecution theme in Dan 7:21 ("the same horn made war with the saints") and Dan 8:24 ("shall destroy the mighty and the holy people") belongs to the same trajectory as Rev 13:7 ("it was given unto him to make war with the saints") and Rev 17:6 ("the woman drunken with the blood of the saints").
Related Topics Discovered¶
PROPHECY (Daniel's prophecies)¶
DAN 4:8,9; DAN 7; DAN 8; DAN 9; DAN 10; DAN 11; DAN 12; MAT 24:15
Key observation: Nave's treats Dan 7-12 as a unified prophetic block. Matthew 24:15 ("the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet") is included, confirming Jesus treats Daniel's prophecies as a unified corpus.
REVELATION¶
EXO 3:1-6,14; 1CH 28:11-19; MAT 3:17
SANCTUARY¶
EXO 25:8; LEV 19:30; HEB 8:2,5; 9:2
Key observation: The SANCTUARY topic connects the earthly tabernacle (Exo 25:8) to the heavenly sanctuary (Heb 8:2,5). Dan 8:11-14 attacks the sanctuary; Dan 7 does not mention sanctuary vocabulary. This is a key progressive revelation distinction.
