Word Studies¶
Question¶
How do righteousness and defilement converge in Dan 8:14's vindication? Why tsadaq not taher? tame→tahor→tsadaq progression. Zechariah 3 model. Sanctuary purpose requires both.
From Word Studies Library¶
Core Verb Triad: tame → taher → tsadaq¶
tsadaq — H6663¶
Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/H6663-tsadaq.md
- Word: צָדַק (tsadaq) — verb, primitive root
- Occurrences: 41 in OT (54 KJV translation entries)
- Definition: To be (causatively, make) right in a moral or forensic sense: cleanse, clear self, justify, be righteous
- Stem distribution:
- Qal (22x): be righteous, be in the right — Job 4:17, 9:2, 25:4; Psa 143:2
- Hiphil (12x): justify, declare righteous — Exo 23:7; Deu 25:1; 1 Kgs 8:32; Isa 53:11; Dan 12:3
- Piel (5x): prove right, show to be righteous — Gen 44:16; Job 32:2; Jer 3:11; Eze 16:51-52
- Niphal (1x): be vindicated — Dan 8:14 ONLY
- Hithpael (1x): clear oneself — Gen 44:16
- Distribution: Job dominates (56%, 23/41). Wisdom and prophetic literature = 90%.
- Top collocates: mishpat (8x), shaphat (8x), rasha (6x) — all courtroom/forensic language
- LXX mapping: dikaioo (G1344, 21x), dikaios (G1342, 22x), krino (G2919, 8x)
- Key for this study: The only Niphal (Dan 8:14) is passive — the sanctuary RECEIVES vindication. The Hiphil (Isa 53:11, Dan 12:3) is causative — God/the Servant CAUSES righteousness. The forensic character is established by the collocates (judgment, judging, wicked/righteous pairs).
taher — H2891¶
Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/H2891-taher.md
- Word: טָהֵר (taher) — verb, primitive root ("to be bright → to be pure")
- Occurrences: 94 (115 KJV instances across 80 verses)
- Definition: To be pure (physically sound, clear; Levitically uncontaminated; morally innocent or holy): be clean, cleanse, purge, purify
- Stem distribution:
- Piel (37x): declare/pronounce clean; actively cleanse
- Qal (34x): be clean (stative/intransitive)
- Hithpael (18x): cleanse oneself (reflexive)
- Pual (1x): be cleansed (passive)
- Distribution: Leviticus 46% (53/115). Ezekiel 15x. Absent from most prophetic books except Malachi (2x).
- Top collocates: kohen/priest (25x), kabas/wash (13x), beged/garment (13x), kaphar (12x), mayim/water (10x)
- LXX mapping: katharizo (G2511, 61x), katharos (G2513, 23x)
- Key for this study: Taher is the DOA result verb (Lev 16:30). Its collocations are with priestly, ritual, and physical-purity vocabulary. It CAN extend to spiritual/eschatological contexts (Mal 3:3, Eze 36:25, Jer 33:8) but its semantic center is ritual cleanness. Critically, taher never appears in Dan 8:14 — Daniel chose tsadaq instead.
tame — H2930¶
Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/H2930-tame.md
- Word: טָמֵא (tame) — verb, primitive root ("to be foul")
- Occurrences: 142 verses (194 tokens) across 13 books
- Definition: To be foul, especially in ceremonial or moral sense: defile, pollute, be unclean
- Stem distribution:
- Qal (72x): be/become unclean (stative)
- Piel (43x): defile, make unclean, pronounce unclean
- Niphal (16x): be defiled (passive)
- Hithpael (12x): defile oneself (reflexive)
- Distribution: Leviticus 50% (71/142). Ezekiel 28x.
- Categories: Ritual impurity from contact, bodily states, priestly declaration, sexual defilement, idolatry, defilement of sacred space
- LXX mapping: miaino (G3392, 86x), akathartos (G169, 53x)
- Key for this study: Tame is the STARTING POINT of the progression. Defilement enters (tame) → must be removed (taher) → but the antitype goes beyond removal to declaration (tsadaq).

Fresh Lookups (No Library Entry)¶
machalatsah — H4254¶
Source: Fresh lookup (search_strongs.py --lookup H4254, --lexicon H4254)
- Word: מַחֲלָצָה
- Transliteration: machălâtsâh
- Part of Speech: Feminine noun
- BLB Count: 2
- Definition: From H2502 (chalats, "to strip off, equip"); a mantle (as easily drawn off): changeable suit of apparel, change of raiment
- Occurrences:
- Zechariah 3:4 — "change of raiment" (the NEW garments replacing the filthy ones)
- Isaiah 3:22 — "changeable suits of apparel" (luxury items of Jerusalem's women)
- Etymology: Root chalats (H2502) means "to strip, equip, arm" — hence a garment that is easily changed, festival clothing
- Significance: In Zech 3:4, the machalatsoth are distinct from ordinary beged (garments). They are SPECIAL festival/ceremonial garments — garments for a NEW occasion. The filthy garments (beged tsow) are replaced not with just clean garments but with FESTIVAL garments. This vocabulary choice suggests the vindication scene is not merely cleansing (returning to a previous state) but inauguration (entering a new status).
abar — H5674 (in Zech 3:4)¶
Source: Fresh lookup (search_strongs.py --lookup H5674, --verses H5674 "to pass")
- Word: עָבַר
- Transliteration: âbar
- Part of Speech: Verb (primitive root)
- BLB Count: 690
- Zech 3:4 form: הֶעֱבַרְתִּי (Hiphil.Perf.1cs) — "I have caused to pass from thee"
- Object: עֲוֹנֶךָ (avon, "thine iniquity")
- Parallel: Zec 13:2 also uses H5674: "I will cause [the names of the idols] to pass out of the land"
- Significance: God uses the Hiphil (causative) — He actively CAUSES the iniquity to pass away. This is not passive cleansing but divine action of sin-removal. The Hiphil of abar for sin-removal is distinct from both taher (cleanse) and kaphar (cover/atone). It describes sin being TRANSFERRED AWAY — similar to the scapegoat concept (Lev 16:21-22) where sins are placed on the goat and sent to the wilderness.
diyn — H1777¶
Source: Fresh lookup (search_strongs.py --lexicon H1777, --lookup H1777)
- Word: דִּין
- Transliteration: dîyn
- Part of Speech: Verb
- BLB Count: 24
- Definition: A primitive root; to rule; by implication to judge (as umpire); also to strive (as at law): contend, execute judgment, judge, minister judgment, plead the cause, strive
- Key verses: Gen 15:14; 49:16; Deu 32:36; Psa 50:4; 110:6; Zec 3:7
- Significance: Appears in Zech 3:7 — after the garment exchange, Joshua receives authority to "judge" (diyn) God's house. The vindication (garment change) leads to judicial authority. The verb diyn connects the Zechariah 3 scene to the judgment theme of Daniel 7-8.
yakach — H3198¶
Source: Fresh lookup (search_strongs.py --lexicon H3198, --lookup H3198)
- Word: יָכַח
- Transliteration: yâkach
- Part of Speech: Verb
- BLB Count: 59
- Definition: To be right (i.e. correct); reciprocal, to argue; causatively, to decide, justify or convict: appoint, argue, chasten, convince, correct, daysman, dispute, judge, maintain, plead, reason together, rebuke, reprove
- Key verses: Job 9:33 ("daysman/mediator"); Isa 1:18 ("reason together"); Isa 11:3-4 ("reprove with equity"); Mic 6:2 ("plead/contend")
- Significance: Forensic argumentation verb covering the full courtroom process: argue, decide, reprove, justify. The "daysman" usage in Job 9:33 (one who mediates/decides between parties) connects to the concept of vindication as a judicial proceeding. God's "reasoning together" (Isa 1:18) is an invitation into the forensic process that tsadaq describes as completed.
Stem Analysis Summary: The Three Stems of tsadaq¶
| Stem | Form | Meaning | Key Verse | Significance |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Niphal (passive) | נִצְדַּק (nitsdaq) | "be vindicated" | Dan 8:14 | The sanctuary RECEIVES vindication — 1 occurrence (hapax) |
| Hiphil (causative) | יַצְדִּיק / מַצְדִּיקֵי | "cause to be righteous / justify" | Isa 53:11; Dan 12:3; Deu 25:1 | God/Servant/judges CAUSE righteousness — 12 occurrences |
| Qal (simple) | צָדַק | "be righteous" | Job 4:17; Psa 143:2 | State of being right before God — 22 occurrences |
The Niphal (Dan 8:14) and Hiphil (Isa 53:11, Dan 12:3) are complementary: - Niphal: the sanctuary receives the verdict (passive recipient) - Hiphil: the Servant/wise ones produce the righteousness (active cause) - Together: vindication has both a receiving end (the sanctuary/God's people) and a producing end (the Servant's work/the wise ones' ministry)
Key Vocabulary Contrasts¶
Why tsadaq not taher (vocabulary shift evidence)¶
| Feature | taher (H2891) | tsadaq (H6663) |
|---|---|---|
| Semantic domain | Ritual/physical purity | Forensic/judicial rightness |
| Primary setting | Levitical system (46% in Leviticus) | Courtroom/wisdom (56% in Job) |
| Top collocates | priest, wash, garment, water | judgment, judge, wicked |
| LXX equivalent | katharizo (cleanse) | dikaioo (justify) |
| DOA presence | Central (Lev 16:19, 16:30) | Absent from Lev 16 entirely |
| Dan 8:14 choice | NOT used | USED (Niphal hapax) |
| Heavenly usage | Not used for heavenly sanctuary | Used for heavenly sanctuary verdict |
The shift from taher to tsadaq is a register elevation: from ritual (what happens to objects) to forensic (what happens in court). The type uses taher; the antitype uses tsadaq. Same function (restoration), different register (ritual → judicial).
