Question

Produce a deep verse-by-verse analysis of Daniel 8:8-19. Cover: the goat-to-little-horn transition (8:8-9), the four-fold attack (8:10-12), the heavenly dialogue "how long?" (8:13), the answer "2300 evening-mornings, then the sanctuary shall be vindicated" (8:14), Daniel's quest for understanding (8:15-16), and Gabriel's framing "at the time of the end" (8:17-19).

Topics

GABRIEL

  • A messenger of God
  • Appeared to Daniel: DAN 8:16; 9:21
  • Appeared to Zacharias: LUK 1:11-19
  • Appeared to Mary: LUK 1:26-29

Note: Gabriel appears only 4x in Scripture (2 OT, 2 NT). Both OT appearances are in Daniel. The name means "mighty man of God" (gever + el), echoing Dan 8:15's ke-mareh gaver.

HORN

  • Literal: container for anointing oil (1SA 16:1; 1KI 1:39)
  • FIGURATIVE: Divine protection (2SA 22:3); Power (1KI 22:11; PSA 89:24; 92:10; 132:17)
  • SYMBOLICAL: DAN 7:7-24; 8:3-9,20; AMO 6:13; MIC 4:13; HAB 3:4; ZEC 1:18-21; REV 5:6; 12:3; 13:1,11; 17:3-16

Note: In Dan 8, horn appears as: great horn (v.5,8,21), two horns of ram (v.3,6,7,20), four conspicuous horns (v.8,22), and the little horn (v.9-12,23-25). qeren (H7161) is grammatically feminine throughout Dan 8.

SANCTUARY

  • The Holy of Holies
  • Divine dwelling place: EXO 25:8
  • In charge of high priest: EXO 27:21; LEV 24:3; NUM 18:5
  • Holy Place in temple: LAM 2:7,20; EZK 42:20
  • FIGURATIVE: EZK 11:16
  • Symbolical: HEB 8:2,5

Note: Dan 8 uses two sanctuary words — miqdash (H4720, v.11, the spatial locus) and qodesh (H6944, vv.13-14, the holiness-sphere). The shift from miqdash to qodesh enlarges scope from the attacked place to the vindicated holiness-domain.

STARS

  • Created by God: GEN 1:16; JOB 26:13; PSA 8:3
  • Falling of: DAN 8:10; MAT 24:29; MRK 13:25; REV 6:13; 8:10; 9:1; 12:4
  • FIGURATIVE: Of the deliverer NUM 24:17; Seven stars = seven congregations REV 1:16,20; Crown of twelve stars REV 12:1

Note: In Dan 8:10, the stars (kokabim, H3556) are paralleled with the host (tsaba, H6635) of heaven. The horn casts them down (Hiphil of naphal) and tramples them. Rev 12:4 echoes: the dragon's tail drew the third part of the stars.

  • Relevant references: DAN 7:9-10 (thrones cast down, Ancient of Days, books opened); ROM 14:10; 2CO 5:10; REV 20:11-15
  • The Dan 7:9-10 judgment scene is the parallel vision-cycle to Dan 8:14's nitsdaq verdict.

ANGEL (a spirit)

  • Angels in Daniel's visions: DAN 4:13-17; 8:13,14; 8:16; 8:19; 9:21-27; 10:10-20
  • As mediators of revelation: ZEC 1:9-11; HEB 2:2; REV 1:1

Note: The "holy ones" (qadoshim) of Dan 8:13 are angelic beings who ask and answer the "how long?" question. The palmoni (certain/unnamed one) is the responder whose answer is directed to Daniel (v.14, "to me").

PROPHECY

  • Daniel's prophecies: DAN 7; 8; 9; 10; 11; 12
