From Word Studies Library¶
Central Spine: kaphar-to-tsadaq Progression¶
kaphar — H3722¶
Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/H3722-kaphar.md
- Definition: Primitive root; to cover, expiate, atone, placate
- Occurrences: 102 in OT; Piel dominates (92x = 90%)
- Distribution: Leviticus 67 (66%), Numbers 19; Pentateuchal ritual = 83%
- Key collocations: chattaah (sin offering, 38x), kohen (priest, 27x), salach (forgive, 12x), taher (cleanse, 12x)
- LXX mapping: hilaskomai (G2433, PMI 6.47), aphiemi (G863, 14x), katharizo (G2511, 14x)
- Word family: kopher (ransom, H3724), kippur (atonement, H3725), kapporeth (mercy seat, H3727)
- Critical finding: Daily formula = kaphar + salach (atonement → forgiveness). Annual formula = kaphar + taher (atonement → cleansing). salach NEVER in Lev 16; taher NEVER in Lev 4-5.
tsadaq — H6663¶
Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/H6663-tsadaq.md
- Definition: Be right, be just, be vindicated, justify, declare righteous
- Occurrences: 41 in OT across 5 stems
- Stem distribution: Qal 22 (be righteous), Hiphil 12 (declare righteous), Piel 5 (prove right), Niphal 1 (be vindicated — Dan 8:14 ONLY), Hithpael 1
- Critical finding: The Niphal occurs exactly ONCE in the entire OT — Dan 8:14. This is the only passive "be vindicated" form. tsadaq has ZERO occurrences in Leviticus; kaphar has 67. Dan 9:24 is the ONLY verse where both vocabulary systems meet.
- LXX mapping: dikaioo (G1344, 21x), dikaios (G1342, 22x)
tsedeq — H6664¶
Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/H6664-tsedeq.md
- Definition: Righteousness, justice, the right (standard/norm)
- Occurrences: 119 tokens across 12 books
- Distribution: Psalms 49 (44%), Isaiah 25 (22%); wisdom and prophets = 97%
- Key collocation: mishpat (H4941) appears with tsedeq in 30 verses (27%)
- Dan 9:24: "tsedeq olamim" — everlasting righteousness, the ONLY verse pairing kaphar and tsedeq
- LXX mapping: dikaiosyne (G1343, PMI 26.71 — extremely strong bridge)
hilasterion — G2435¶
Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/G2435-hilasterion.md
- Definition: Expiatory (place or thing); mercy seat; propitiatory
- Occurrences: 2 in NT (Rom 3:25, Heb 9:5)
- Rom 3:25: Christ IS the hilasterion — both the place where divine righteousness is publicly displayed and the means of expiation through blood
- Heb 9:5: The mercy seat of the OT tabernacle — same word
- Hebrew source: kapporeth (H3727, PMI 9.75) — the LXX chose hilasterion over transliteration, foregrounding FUNCTION
- Bridge role: Connects OT kapporeth (mercy seat where kaphar happens) to NT Christological fulfillment
TR: tsadaq → dikaioo¶
Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/TR-tsadaq-dikaioo.md
- Hebrew tsadaq (41x) → Greek dikaioo (40x NT)
- The LXX maps Hiphil tsadaq to dikaioo 21x (forensic declaration)
- Semantic shift: Hebrew covers 5 stems (be righteous, declare righteous, prove right, be vindicated, clear self); Greek narrows to primarily forensic declaration
- Critical gap: The OT Niphal (Dan 8:14 — vindication of sanctuary) has NO direct NT parallel via dikaioo; the concept takes different vocabulary in the NT (the dikaios+alethinos pair in Revelation)
Defilement-to-Cleansing Arc¶
tame — H2930¶
Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/H2930-tame.md
- Occurrences: 194 tokens across 13 books; Leviticus = 50% (71 verses)

- LXX: miaino (G3392, PMI 31.76 primary), akathartos (G169, PMI 24.39)
- 7 semantic categories: ritual contact, bodily, priestly declaration, sexual, idolatry, sacred space, deliberate desecration
taher — H2891¶
Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/H2891-taher.md
- Occurrences: 94 in OT; Leviticus = 46% (53x)
- Stems: Piel 37 (declare/pronounce clean), Qal 34 (be clean), Hithpael 18 (cleanse self)
- Key collocation: kaphar (H3722, 12x) — "make atonement... and be clean"
- LXX: katharizo (G2511, 61x primary)
- Critical passage: Lev 16:30 — kaphar (Piel) + taher (Piel infinitive + Qal imperfect)
TR: taher → katharizo¶
Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/TR-taher-katharizo.md
- Continuity: Blood remains primary instrument (Lev 16 → Heb 9); God remains ultimate agent (Eze 36:25 → 1 Jn 1:9)
- Shifts: Ritual → moral/spiritual; priest-mediated → direct; external → internal; repeated → once-for-all
- Heb 9:23 uses katharizo for heavenly purification; Dan 8:14 uses tsadaq for the same event. These describe different aspects: cleansing happens; vindication is what it all means.

Fresh Lookups (no library entry — generated in Phase 3.5)¶
abar — H5674 (Zech 3:4)¶
Status: Check Phase 3.5 generation — if library file exists, reference it. - Zech 3:4 parsing: he'evarti (Hiphil perfect 1cs of abar) = "I have CAUSED to pass from thee" - The Hiphil causative means God actively transferred/removed Joshua's iniquity — not merely that it "passed away" - This is the key verb in the tame→tahor→tsadaq three-step model: filthy garments removed (taher), iniquity caused to pass (abar Hiphil), festival garments installed (tsadaq)
aparabaton — G531 (Heb 7:24)¶
Status: Check Phase 3.5 generation — if library file exists, reference it. - Heb 7:24: Christ's priesthood is "unchangeable" (KJV) = aparabaton — literally "untransferable, not passing to another" - This term appears ONCE in the NT - Theological import: The horn's counterfeit system installs human priests who stand daily (Heb 10:11). Christ's priesthood CANNOT be transferred. The counterfeit is an ontological impossibility.
