Bible Study: Biblical Righteousness — Vocabulary Foundation for the Vindication Verdict¶
Question¶
What does the Bible mean by righteousness? What are the Hebrew words (tsadaq H6663, tsedeq H6664, tsedaqah H6666, tsaddiyq H6662) and Greek words (dikaios G1342, dikaiosyne G1343, dikaioo G1344, dikaiosis G1347)? How is righteousness received, maintained, and lost? Cover forensic (declared), relational (covenant faithfulness), and character (conduct) dimensions. This study establishes the vocabulary that culminates in Daniel 8:14's nitsdaq — the learner must understand that tsadaq is courtroom language before encountering it in the prophetic verdict.
Series Context¶
This is Study 1 of 23 in the "Daniel 8:14 and the Sanctuary Vindication" series. It establishes the tsadaq endpoint of the progression tame → tahor → tsadaq (defiled → cleansed → vindicated). The learner must grasp that tsadaq is judicial vocabulary BEFORE encountering it in Dan 8:14. No prior series studies exist — this is the foundation.
Custom Instructions¶
Read D:\bible\bible-studies\sv-01-biblical-righteousness\CUSTOM-INSTRUCTIONS.md before any analysis work. Key rules:
- Reference Boundary Rule: 03-analysis.md and CONCLUSION.md may ONLY reference studies within this series. Since this is Study 1, no prior series studies exist to reference.
- The scoping, reference, and research agents may use the full bible-studies library and word-studies/grammar-reference libraries normally.
- Use plain, accessible language. Avoid complex vocabulary, hyphenated compound modifiers, and academic jargon.
Prior Research Summary¶
From prior study (biblical-righteousness): - The tsadaq root produces four major words: tsaddiyq (H6662, 210x), tsedaqah (H6666, 165x), tsedeq (H6664, 119x), tsadaq verb (H6663, 41x) — over 530 OT occurrences total - Verb stem variations encode dimensions: Qal (be righteous, 22x), Hiphil (declare righteous/causative, 12x — includes Isa 53:11 and Exo 23:7), Piel (comparative, 5x), Niphal (Dan 8:14 only — passive verdict), Hithpael (Gen 44:16, justify oneself) - Greek dik- family: dikaios (G1342, 81x), dikaiosyne (G1343, 92x), dikaioo (G1344, 40x), dikaioma (G1345, 10x), dikaiosis (G1347, 2x), dikaiokrisia (G1341, hapax Rom 2:5) - LXX bridge: tsaddiyq → dikaios PMI 32.40 (extremely tight correspondence) - dikaioo voice distribution: ~30 passive (divine passive), ~9 active — justification is received, not achieved - Righteousness obtained by faith through imputation (Gen 15:6 → Rom 4:3). Maintained by walking in the Spirit (Rom 8:1-4), confession (1 John 1:7-9), faith working through love (Gal 5:6). Lost through deliberate, sustained turning (Eze 18:24, Heb 10:26-29, 2 Pet 2:20-22). - Sanctuary bridge: Lev 16 = kaphar → taher; Dan 9:24 = kaphar → tsedeq olamim; Zech 3 = filthy garments removed + festival robes given; Rom 3:25-26 = hilasterion → dikaios kai dikaiunta - Garment imagery: Job 29:14 (conduct), Isa 61:10 (God provides), Zech 3:3-5 (cleansing + investiture), Matt 22:11-14 (required), Rev 7:14 (washed), Rev 19:8 (dikaiomata = righteous acts, granted)
From sanc-19 (vindication-courtroom): - Dan 8:14's nitsdaq uses courtroom vocabulary (tsadaq), not ritual vocabulary (taher/kaphar) — THE foundational lexical observation - Four dimensions of vindication: God's Law, God's People, God's Plan, God's Character - The riyb (H7378, lawsuit) pattern: God initiates His own trial (Mic 6:1-2), invites cross-examination (Isa 43:26), asks to be evaluated (Isa 5:3-4) - Isa 53:11: three tsadaq forms converge — righteous servant IS righteous, DECLARES many righteous, BY BEARING iniquities
From sanc-25 (Daniel 8:14 vindicated): - nitsdaq = Niphal Perfect of tsadaq (H6663) — the ONLY Niphal in the entire OT - KJV's "cleansed" is unique among 54 occurrences — anomaly from Vulgate influence - OG LXX uses dikaiothesatai (justified); Theodotion uses katharisthesetai (cleansed) - kaphar → tsadaq progression across four texts: Lev 16:30 → Dan 9:24 → Isa 53:11 → Rom 3:25-26 → Dan 8:14
From atone-16 (justification by faith): - dikaioo is courtroom vocabulary, Louw-Nida domain 56.005 — Courts: Judge, Condemn, Acquit - Antonym pair katakrima/dikaiosis (G2631/G1347) in Rom 5:18 - Four atonement frameworks each contribute a dimension to justification
External corpus leads (EGW, Bohr) — for biblical verification: - EGW claims imputed righteousness "means holiness, uprightness, purity" (TSB 134.1) and the righteousness garment = actual character, not just legal covering - EGW connects Dan 9:24 "everlasting righteousness" to Christ's imputed righteousness clothing the believer (1SM 396.1) - EGW distinguishes "active obedience of Christ" clothing the believer with righteousness meeting law's demands (SD 240.4) - Bohr claims tsadaq is "not connected with the ritual of the sanctuary but rather is a legal term used in the context of a court of law" (GPOT2V1 p. 442) - Bohr argues Dan 7:9-14 (judicial) and Dan 8:14 (sanctuary) describe the same event from different angles

Focus Areas¶
- The tsadaq word family: four Hebrew words, one root
- WHAT: Map all four Hebrew words (H6663 tsadaq verb, H6664 tsedeq, H6666 tsedaqah, H6662 tsaddiyq) with their distinct usages, occurrence counts, and semantic ranges.
- WHY: Tool discoveries confirm 530+ OT occurrences across the family. The verb's stem variations (Qal, Niphal, Hiphil, Piel, Hithpael) encode different dimensions of righteousness — and the Niphal occurs only in Dan 8:14. Prior studies emphasize this as THE foundational lexical observation for the series.
-
HOW: READ the four library entries:
H6663-tsadaq.md,H6664-tsedeq.md,H6666-tsedaqah.md,H6662-tsaddiyq.md. Also READWG-hebrew-righteousness.mdfor the word group overview. Runsearch_strongs.py --lookup H6663for fresh data on stem distributions if needed. Retrieve Gen 15:6, Exo 23:7, Deu 25:1, Isa 53:11, Psa 51:4, Dan 8:14 with full chapter context. -
The Greek dik- family: seven NT words mapping to tsadaq
- WHAT: Map all Greek dik- words (G1342 dikaios, G1343 dikaiosyne, G1344 dikaioo, G1345 dikaioma, G1346 dikaios adverb, G1347 dikaiosis, G1341 dikaiokrisia) with their usage patterns and voice distributions.
- WHY: Nave's JUSTIFICATION entry surfaced 40+ verses in Romans and Galatians using dik- vocabulary. The dikaioo voice distribution (~30 passive, ~9 active) reveals that justification is divine action, not human achievement. dikaiosis appears only twice (Rom 4:25, 5:18), making each occurrence critical.
-
HOW: READ the seven library entries:
G1342-dikaios.md,G1343-dikaiosyne.md,G1344-dikaioo.md,G1345-dikaioma.md,G1346-dikaios.md,G1347-dikaiosis.md,G1341-dikaiokrisia.md. Also READG1349-dike.mdfor the root. Run greek_parser.py on Rom 3:24-26, Rom 4:25, Rom 5:18-19 for voice/tense analysis. -
The LXX bridge: tsadaq → dikaioo and the cross-linguistic unity
- WHAT: Document how the LXX translators rendered the Hebrew tsadaq family into Greek, establishing the continuity between OT and NT righteousness vocabulary.
- WHY: The translation relationship TR-tsadaq-dikaioo shows PMI 26.99 (or higher), one of the tightest Hebrew-Greek mappings in the LXX. This proves that when Paul writes dikaioo, he means exactly what Moses and Isaiah meant by tsadaq. Tool discoveries confirm dikaioo's Hebrew sources include tsadaq (26.99), shaphat (12.26), zakah (11.43), riyb (9.34) — the entire orbit is legal.

Forensic dimension: the courtroom metaphor
- WHAT: Document the courtroom usage of tsadaq/dikaioo — how righteousness functions as a legal verdict declared by a judge, with specific attention to the judge-defendant-accuser dynamics.
- WHY: Nave's JUSTICE, JUDGMENT, VERDICT, and COURT entries surfaced Deu 25:1-4 (courtroom acquittal/condemnation pair), Pro 17:15 (condemning the righteous/justifying the wicked), Exo 23:7 (God will not justify the wicked). Semantic Strong's search confirmed H4941 mishpat (verdict), H1777 diyn (to judge), and the rasha/tsadaq antonym pair in legal contexts. Bohr's claim that tsadaq is exclusively legal vocabulary needs verification.
-
HOW: Retrieve Deu 25:1, Exo 23:7, Pro 17:15, Isa 50:8, Psa 51:4, Rom 8:33-34 with full context. READ
H4941-mishpat.md,H1777-diyn.md,G2920-krisis.md,H816-asham.md,G2631-katakrima.md. Run parallels on Isa 50:8 (BOTH directions). Run hebrew_parser.py on Deu 25:1 and Exo 23:7 for verb stem analysis. -
Relational dimension: covenant faithfulness
- WHAT: Document how righteousness functions within covenant relationships — being faithful to the terms of the covenant, walking rightly before God as covenant partner.
- WHY: Nave's COVENANT (0.59) and FAITHFULNESS (0.55) entries surfaced extensive verse lists connecting righteousness to covenant keeping. Deu 6:25 (counted as righteousness for obedience to commands), Gen 18:19 (Abraham's household keeping the way of the LORD), Mic 6:8 (do justly, love mercy, walk humbly), Luk 1:6 (Zacharias and Elisabeth righteous before God, walking in all commandments). The relational dimension is essential because Dan 8:14's nitsdaq involves a sanctuary in covenant relationship with God.
-
HOW: Retrieve Deu 6:25, Gen 18:19, Mic 6:8, Luk 1:6, Psa 103:17-18, Jer 31:31-34 with context. READ
H530-emuwnah.md,H539-aman.md,H1285-beriyth.md,G1242-diatheke.md. Once generated, READH2617-chesed.md. Run parallels on Mic 6:8 (BOTH directions). -
Character dimension: righteous conduct
- WHAT: Document how righteousness involves actual conduct — doing right, living rightly, producing the fruits of righteousness.
- WHY: Nave's RIGHTEOUSNESS entry has a large "FRUITS OF" subsection listing 60+ verses connecting righteousness to observable behavior. Ezk 18:5-9 provides the most detailed ethical catalog defining what it means to be righteous. 1 John 3:7 ("he that doeth righteousness is righteous") directly links doing with being. The garment imagery (Job 29:14, Isa 61:10, Rev 19:8) suggests righteousness is both given and lived.
-
HOW: Retrieve Eze 18:5-9 (full chapter context), 1 John 3:7 (full chapter), Job 29:14, Rev 19:8, Isa 61:10, Mat 5:20. Run greek_parser.py on 1 John 3:7 and Rev 19:8 for grammatical analysis of dikaioma/dikaiosyne. Run parallels on Eze 18:5 (BOTH directions).
-
How righteousness is received: imputation and faith
- WHAT: Trace the mechanism by which God credits righteousness to humans — from Gen 15:6 (chashab) through Rom 4 (logizomai) and the "righteousness of God" (dikaiosyne theou) concept.
- WHY: Nave's FAITH entry (0.46) surfaced Gen 15:6 as the anchor verse for imputed righteousness. Semantic Strong's search found H2803 chashab and G3049 logizomai as the imputation vocabulary, plus G1677 ellogeo. The prior study identified the chashab → logizomai link as the core mechanism. Rom 4:3-25 contains the densest concentration of imputation vocabulary in Scripture.
-
HOW: READ
H2803-chashab.md,G3049-logizomai.md,G1677-ellogeo.md,WG-imputation.md. Retrieve Gen 15:6 (full chapter), Rom 4 (full chapter), 2 Cor 5:21, Psa 32:1-2. Run greek_parser.py on Rom 4:3-5 for the logizomai forms. Run parallels on Gen 15:6 (BOTH directions). -
How righteousness is maintained and lost
- WHAT: Document the ongoing process of maintaining righteous standing and the conditions under which it can be forfeited.
- WHY: Nave's entries surfaced critical texts: Eze 18:24 (righteous turning away — all righteousness not mentioned), Heb 10:26-29 (no more sacrifice for willful sin), 2 Pet 2:20-22 (worse than before), Rom 8:1-4 (walking in the Spirit), 1 John 1:7-9 (confession and cleansing), Gal 5:6 (faith working through love). The distinction between stumbling and settled abandonment is critical.
-
HOW: Retrieve Eze 18:24 (full chapter context), Heb 10:26-29, 2 Pet 2:20-22, Rom 8:1-4, 1 John 1:7-9, Gal 5:6, Tit 2:11-12. Run parallels on Eze 18:24 (BOTH directions). Run greek_parser.py on Heb 10:26 for the present participle (willful ongoing sin vs. isolated failure).
-
The garment of righteousness: given and lived
- WHAT: Trace the garment/robe imagery for righteousness across Scripture — from Job through Zechariah to Revelation.
- WHY: Nave's ROBE (0.65) and GARMENT (0.64) entries specifically list righteousness garment texts: Isa 61:10, Rev 7:9,13, Mat 22:11, 2 Cor 5:3, Rev 3:18, 7:14, 19:8. The EGW claim that the "white robe of character" equates the garment with actual character (not just legal covering) needs biblical verification through Rev 19:8 (dikaiomata = righteous acts).
-
HOW: Retrieve Isa 61:10, Zech 3:1-5, Mat 22:11-14, Rev 19:8, Rev 7:9-14, Job 29:14 with context. Run greek_parser.py on Rev 19:8 for dikaiomata analysis. Run parallels on Zech 3:4 (BOTH directions). READ
G1345-dikaioma.mdfor the dikaioma entry. -
The kaphar → tsadaq progression and Dan 8:14's nitsdaq
- WHAT: Trace the four-text progression from ritual atonement to forensic vindication: Lev 16:30 (kaphar → taher), Dan 9:24 (lekhapper → tsedeq olamim), Isa 53:11 (bearing iniquities → yatsdiq), Rom 3:25-26 (hilasterion → dikaios kai dikaiunta), arriving at Dan 8:14 (nitsdaq).
- WHY: Prior studies established this as the backbone linking sanctuary atonement to the vindication verdict. Dan 9:24's bridge from atonement vocabulary (kaphar) to righteousness vocabulary (tsedeq olamim) is the ONLY verse that spans both domains. Isa 53:11 is the hinge where three tsadaq forms converge. This focus area sets up the entire 23-study series.
- HOW: READ

Run parallels on Dan 9:24 (BOTH directions).
External Corpus Leads (from 00-references.md)¶
- EGW: Imputed righteousness "means holiness, uprightness, purity" and the righteousness indwelling by faith "consists of love, forbearance, meekness" (TSB 134.1)
-
Verify: Check whether 2 Cor 5:21, Rom 8:4, Gal 5:22-23, and Tit 2:11-12 support the claim that imputed righteousness includes character transformation rather than being purely forensic status. Run greek_parser.py on 2 Cor 5:21 and Rom 8:4. Compare dikaioo (forensic) with dikaiosyne (broader).
-
EGW: Dan 9:24 "everlasting righteousness" = Christ's imputed righteousness clothing the believer (1SM 396.1)
-
Verify: Retrieve Dan 9:24 with full context. Run hebrew_parser.py on the phrase "tsedeq olamim." Does the passage refer to individual believer-level imputation, or to a cosmic/eschatological result? Compare with Jer 23:6 "YHWH Tsidqenu."
-
EGW: "White robe of character" — righteousness garment = actual character, not just legal covering (UL 192.4, 2LtMs Lt 27 1871)
-
Verify: Run greek_parser.py on Rev 19:8 — is dikaiomata "righteous acts" or "legal requirements"? Check Rev 7:14 — are the robes "washed" (already white but stained?) or "made white" (changed in nature)? Compare with Mat 22:11-14 wedding garment.
-
Bohr: tsadaq is "not connected with the ritual of the sanctuary but rather is a legal term used in the context of a court of law" (GPOT2V1 p. 442)
-
Verify: Search all occurrences of tsadaq (H6663) to verify whether any occur in ritual/ceremonial contexts. Run
search_strongs.py --verses H6663for every translation. The KJV rendering "cleansed" in Dan 8:14 is the test case — is this translation an anomaly, or does tsadaq have ritual usage elsewhere? -
Bohr: Dan 7:9-14 (judicial) and Dan 8:14 (sanctuary) describe the same event from different angles (GPOT2V1 p. 450)
-
Verify: Retrieve Dan 7:9-14 and Dan 8:14 with full context. Compare vocabulary: does Dan 7 use judgment/court words (diyn, dina) while Dan 8 uses tsadaq? Run hebrew_parser.py on Dan 7:9-10 and Dan 8:14. Check whether the temporal markers align.
-
EGW: "Active obedience of Christ" clothes the believer with righteousness meeting the law's demands (SD 240.4)
- Verify: Check Rom 5:19 ("by the obedience of one") and Rom 8:4 ("the righteousness of the law fulfilled in us"). Run greek_parser.py on both verses. Does "obedience of one" (hupakoe) map to "righteousness of the law fulfilled in us" (dikaioma tou nomou)?
