Primary Verses — The Four Daniel Sealing Passages¶
Daniel 8:26 (with full chapter context — Dan 8:1-27)¶
Dan 8:1 In the third year of the reign of king Belshazzar a vision appeared unto me, even unto me Daniel, after that which appeared unto me at the first. Dan 8:2 And I saw in a vision; and it came to pass, when I saw, that I was at Shushan in the palace, which is in the province of Elam; and I saw in a vision, and I was by the river of Ulai. Dan 8:3 Then I lifted up mine eyes, and saw, and, behold, there stood before the river a ram which had two horns: and the two horns were high; but one was higher than the other, and the higher came up last. Dan 8:4 I saw the ram pushing westward, and northward, and southward; so that no beasts might stand before him, neither was there any that could deliver out of his hand; but he did according to his will, and became great. Dan 8:5 And as I was considering, behold, an he goat came from the west on the face of the whole earth, and touched not the ground: and the goat had a notable horn between his eyes. Dan 8:6-7 [Ram-goat conflict] Dan 8:8 Therefore the he goat waxed very great: and when he was strong, the great horn was broken; and for it came up four notable ones toward the four winds of heaven. Dan 8:9 And out of one of them came forth a little horn, which waxed exceeding great, toward the south, and toward the east, and toward the pleasant land. Dan 8:10-12 [Little horn's expansion — tramples host, takes away daily, casts down truth] Dan 8:13 Then I heard one saint speaking, and another saint said unto that certain saint which spake, How long shall be the vision concerning the daily sacrifice, and the transgression of desolation, to give both the sanctuary and the host to be trodden under foot? Dan 8:14 And he said unto me, Unto two thousand and three hundred days; then shall the sanctuary be cleansed. Dan 8:15 And it came to pass, when I, even I Daniel, had seen the vision, and sought for the meaning, then, behold, there stood before me as the appearance of a man. Dan 8:16 And I heard a man's voice between the banks of Ulai, which called, and said, Gabriel, make this man to understand the vision. Dan 8:17 So he came near where I stood: and when he came, I was afraid, and fell upon my face: but he said unto me, Understand, O son of man: for at the time of the end shall be the vision. Dan 8:18-19 [Daniel faints, is raised; "at the time appointed the end shall be"] Dan 8:20 The ram which thou sawest having two horns are the kings of Media and Persia. Dan 8:21 And the rough goat is the king of Grecia: and the great horn that is between his eyes is the first king. Dan 8:22 Now that being broken, whereas four stood up for it, four kingdoms shall stand up out of the nation, but not in his power. Dan 8:23 And in the latter time of their kingdom, when the transgressors are come to the full, a king of fierce countenance, and understanding dark sentences, shall stand up. Dan 8:24-25 [King's power, destruction, standing against Prince of princes, broken without hand] Dan 8:26 And the vision of the evening and the morning which was told is true: wherefore shut thou up the vision; for it shall be for many days. Dan 8:27 And I Daniel fainted, and was sick certain days; afterward I rose up, and did the king's business; and I was astonished at the vision, but none understood it.
Key observations: - Gabriel explains identities (vv.20-25): ram = Medo-Persia, goat = Greece, horn = fierce king - Gabriel does NOT explain: the 2300 evening-mornings (v.14), the starting point, or the identity of the sanctuary - The mar'eh of the evening-morning is authenticated as truth (v.26a) - The chazon is sealed (v.26b) — satham only, no chatham - Result: "none understood" (v.27) — the sealing is immediately effective
Daniel 9:20-27 (Gabriel's return — 70 weeks, chatham authentication)¶
Dan 9:20 And whiles I was speaking, and praying, and confessing my sin and the sin of my people Israel, and presenting my supplication before the LORD my God for the holy mountain of my God; Dan 9:21 Yea, whiles I was speaking in prayer, even the man Gabriel, whom I had seen in the vision at the beginning, being caused to fly swiftly, touched me about the time of the evening oblation. Dan 9:22 And he informed me, and talked with me, and said, O Daniel, I am now come forth to give thee skill and understanding. Dan 9:23 At the beginning of thy supplications the commandment came forth, and I am come to shew thee; for thou art greatly beloved: therefore understand the matter, and consider the vision. Dan 9:24 Seventy weeks are determined upon thy people and upon thy holy city, to finish the transgression, and to make an end of sins, and to make reconciliation for iniquity, and to bring in everlasting righteousness, and to seal up the vision and prophecy, and to anoint the most Holy. Dan 9:25 Know therefore and understand, that from the going forth of the commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem unto the Messiah the Prince shall be seven weeks, and threescore and two weeks: the street shall be built again, and the wall, even in troublous times. Dan 9:26 And after threescore and two weeks shall Messiah be cut off, but not for himself: and the people of the prince that shall come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary; and the end thereof shall be with a flood, and unto the end of the war desolations are determined. Dan 9:27 And he shall confirm the covenant with many for one week: and in the midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease, and for the overspreading of abominations he shall make it desolate, even until the consummation, and that determined shall be poured upon the desolate.
Key observations: - Gabriel returns explicitly from Dan 8: "the man Gabriel, whom I had seen in the vision at the beginning" (v.21) - He comes to give "skill and understanding" (v.22) — biyn chain continues - Dan 9:24's chatham is an infinitive of purpose: "to seal up vision and prophecy" — authentication sense, not concealment - The 70 weeks provide a starting point (457 BC) and verification key (AD 27) for the 2300
Daniel 12:1-13 (full chapter — final seal, understanding chain, time periods)¶
Dan 12:1 And at that time shall Michael stand up, the great prince which standeth for the children of thy people: and there shall be a time of trouble, such as never was since there was a nation even to that same time: and at that time thy people shall be delivered, every one that shall be found written in the book. Dan 12:2 And many of them that sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt. Dan 12:3 And they that be wise shall shine as the brightness of the firmament; and they that turn many to righteousness as the stars for ever and ever. Dan 12:4 But thou, O Daniel, shut up the words, and seal the book, even to the time of the end: many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall be increased. Dan 12:5 Then I Daniel looked, and, behold, there stood other two, the one on this side of the bank of the river, and the other on that side of the bank of the river. Dan 12:6 And one said to the man clothed in linen, which was upon the waters of the river, How long shall it be to the end of these wonders? Dan 12:7 And I heard the man clothed in linen, which was upon the waters of the river, when he held up his right hand and his left hand unto heaven, and sware by him that liveth for ever that it shall be for a time, times, and an half; and when he shall have accomplished to scatter the power of the holy people, all these things shall be finished. Dan 12:8 And I heard, but I understood not: then said I, O my Lord, what shall be the end of these things? Dan 12:9 And he said, Go thy way, Daniel: for the words are closed up and sealed till the time of the end. Dan 12:10 Many shall be purified, and made white, and tried; but the wicked shall do wickedly: and none of the wicked shall understand; but the wise shall understand. Dan 12:11 And from the time that the daily sacrifice shall be taken away, and the abomination that maketh desolate set up, there shall be a thousand two hundred and ninety days. Dan 12:12 Blessed is he that waiteth, and cometh to the thousand three hundred and five and thirty days. Dan 12:13 But go thou thy way till the end be: for thou shalt rest, and stand in thy lot at the end of the days.
The Vocabulary Chain Through Revelation¶

Rev 5:1 And I saw in the right hand of him that sat on the throne a book written within and on the backside, sealed with seven seals. Rev 5:2 And I saw a strong angel proclaiming with a loud voice, Who is worthy to open the book, and to loose the seals thereof? Rev 5:3 And no man in heaven, nor in earth, neither under the earth, was able to open the book, neither to look thereon. Rev 5:4 And I wept much, because no man was found worthy to open and to read the book, neither to look thereon. Rev 6:1 And I saw when the Lamb opened one of the seals, and I heard, as it were the noise of thunder, one of the four beasts saying, Come and see.
Revelation 10:1-11 (entire chapter — the little book open, oath scene)¶
Rev 10:1 And I saw another mighty angel come down from heaven, clothed with a cloud: and a rainbow was upon his head, and his face was as it were the sun, and his feet as pillars of fire: Rev 10:2 And he had in his hand a little book open: and he set his right foot upon the sea, and his left foot on the earth, Rev 10:3-4 [Seven thunders — sealed separately] Rev 10:5 And the angel which I saw stand upon the sea and upon the earth lifted up his hand to heaven, Rev 10:6 And sware by him that liveth for ever and ever, who created heaven, and the things that therein are, and the earth, and the things that therein are, and the sea, and the things which are therein, that there should be time no longer: Rev 10:7 But in the days of the voice of the seventh angel, when he shall begin to sound, the mystery of God should be finished, as he hath declared to his servants the prophets. Isaiah Sealing Parallels¶
Isaiah 8:16 (with context vv.11-20)¶
Isa 8:11 For the LORD spake thus to me with a strong hand, and instructed me that I should not walk in the way of this people, saying, Isa 8:12-15 [Warning against conspiracy; God as sanctuary and stumbling stone] Isa 8:16 Bind up the testimony, seal the law among my disciples. Isa 8:17 And I will wait upon the LORD, that hideth his face from the house of Jacob, and I will look for him. Isa 8:18 Behold, I and the children whom the LORD hath given me are for signs and for wonders in Israel from the LORD of hosts, which dwelleth in mount Zion. Isa 8:20 To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them.
Hebrew parsing (Isa 8:16): צוֹר (Qal.Impv.2ms of צרר, "bind") + תְּעוּדָה (testimony) + חֲתוֹם (Qal.Impv.2ms of חתם, "seal") + תּוֹרָה (instruction) + בְּלִמֻּדָי (among my disciples). Paired imperatives like Dan 12:4, but first verb is צרר not סתם, and there is no temporal boundary (עד עת קץ).
Isaiah 29:9-18 (sealed book context)¶
Isa 29:9 Stay yourselves, and wonder; cry ye out, and cry: they are drunken, but not with wine; they stagger, but not with strong drink. Isa 29:10 For the LORD hath poured out upon you the spirit of deep sleep, and hath closed your eyes: the prophets and your rulers, the seers hath he covered. Isa 29:11 And the vision of all is become unto you as the words of a book that is sealed, which men deliver to one that is learned, saying, Read this, I pray thee: and he saith, I cannot; for it is sealed: Isa 29:12 And the book is delivered to him that is not learned, saying, Read this, I pray thee: and he saith, I am not learned. Isa 29:13-14 [God will do a marvelous work; wisdom of the wise shall perish] Isa 29:18 And in that day shall the deaf hear the words of the book, and the eyes of the blind shall see out of obscurity, and out of darkness.
Key observation: Isa 29:11 uses chatham (passive participle, הֶחָתוּם) for the sealed book. The sealed state makes the content inaccessible to both learned and unlearned. Isa 29:18 promises a future reversal — "the deaf shall hear the words of the book." This unsealing-through-hearing parallels Dan 12:4's "knowledge shall be increased."
Supporting Passages¶
The Well-Stopping Physical Usage of satham¶
Gen 26:15 For all the wells which his father's servants had digged in the days of Abraham his father, the Philistines had stopped them (סִתְּמוּם, Piel.Perf.3p of סתם), and filled them with earth. Gen 26:18 And Isaac digged again the wells of water, which they had digged in the days of Abraham his father; for the Philistines had stopped them (סְתָמוּם) after the death of Abraham.
2 Chr 32:3 He took counsel with his princes and his mighty men to stop the waters of the fountains which were without the city: and they did help him. 2 Chr 32:4 So there was gathered much people together, who stopped all the fountains, and the brook that ran through the midst of the land, saying, Why should the kings of Assyria come, and find much water?
The Word-Famine Parallel (Amos 8:11-12 — shuwt connection)¶
Amos 8:11 Behold, the days come, saith the Lord GOD, that I will send a famine in the land, not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the LORD: Amos 8:12 And they shall wander from sea to sea, and from the north even to the east, they shall run to and fro (יְשׁוֹטְטוּ, Piel of שׁוט — same verb as Dan 12:4) to seek the word of the LORD, and shall not find it.
The biyn (Understanding) Chain¶
Dan 1:17 As for these four children, God gave them knowledge and skill in all learning and wisdom: and Daniel had understanding (biynah) in all visions and dreams. Dan 8:15 ...I Daniel, had seen the vision, and sought for the meaning (biynah)... Dan 8:16 ...Gabriel, make this man to understand (habiyn, Hiphil) the vision. Dan 8:17 ...Understand (biyn, Qal.Impv), O son of man... Dan 8:27 ...I was astonished at the vision, but none understood (mebiyn, Hiphil.Ptcp negated) it. Dan 9:22 ...I am now come forth to give thee skill and understanding (biynah). Dan 9:23 ...understand the matter, and consider the vision (biyn + habiyn). Dan 10:1 ...he understood the thing (ubiyn, Qal.Perf.3ms), and had understanding of the vision. Dan 12:8 And I heard, but I understood (abiyn, Qal.Impf.1s) not. Dan 12:10 ...none of the wicked shall understand (yabiynuw); but the wise shall understand (yabiynuw).
Dan 6:17 — Aramaic chatham (physical sealing, Daniel's personal experience)¶
Dan 6:17 And a stone was brought, and laid upon the mouth of the den; and the king sealed it with his own signet, and with the signet of his lords; that the purpose might not be changed concerning Daniel.
