Verses¶
Primary Verses — Daniel 8:8-19¶
Daniel 8:8 (goat breaks, four horns arise)¶
Therefore the he goat waxed very great: and when he was strong, the great horn was broken; and for it came up four notable ones toward the four winds of heaven.
Key parsing: higdil (Hiphil.Perf.3ms of gadal) — goat "magnified exceedingly"; nishberah (Niphal.Perf.3fs of shabar) — great horn "was broken" (agent suppressed, passive); vattaalena (Qal.Wayq.3fp of alah) — four "came up" (narrative foreground).
Daniel 8:9 (little horn emerges)¶
And out of one of them came forth a little horn, which waxed exceeding great, toward the south, and toward the east, and toward the pleasant [land].
Key parsing: mehem (3mp suffix) — antecedent ambiguous between four horns and four winds; mitstsiyrah (hapax H4704) — "from a little one" (diminutive origin); tigdal-yeter — "grew with surplus/excess" (stronger intensifier than v.8's ad-meod); hats-tsevi — "the glorious [land]" — breaks the compass pattern (south, east, + charged toponym).
Daniel 8:10 (host cast down — Attack #1)¶
And it waxed great, [even] to the host of heaven; and it cast down [some] of the host and of the stars to the ground, and stamped upon them.
Key parsing: tigdal (Qal.Wayq.3fs) — intransitive growth "up to" the host of the heavens; tappel (Hiphil.Wayq.3fs of naphal) — causative "caused to fall" — horn is named agent; tirmsem (Qal.Wayq.3fs + 3mp suffix of ramas) — "trampled them." All 3fs verbs = feminine horn as subject. Three wayyiqtol narrative chain = foregrounded action.
Daniel 8:11 (Prince challenged + tamid removed + sanctuary cast down — Attacks #2-4)¶
Yea, he magnified [himself] even to the prince of the host, and by him the daily [sacrifice] was taken away, and the place of his sanctuary was cast down.
Key parsing: - higdil (Hiphil.Perf.3ms of gadal) — reflexive-intensive "magnified himself" up to the Prince - huram (Hophal.Perf.3ms of rum) — passive "was taken away" — agent suppressed - hushlak (Hophal.Perf.3ms of shalak) — passive "was cast down" — agent suppressed - mekhon miqdasho — construct chain "place of his sanctuary" with 3ms suffix binding to sar (the Prince), not to the f.s. horn
Clause structure: Three WxQ/WQt clauses (not wayyiqtol) — discourse register shifts from narrative foreground (v.10) to focus-fronted backgrounding. The fronted complement ad-sar-hats-tsaba places the Prince in focus position.
Daniel 8:12 (truth cast to ground + horn prospers)¶
And an host was given [him] against the daily [sacrifice] by reason of transgression, and it cast down the truth to the ground; and it practised, and prospered.
Key parsing: - tinnaten (Niphal.Impf.3fs of nathan) — divine passive "was given over" - tashlekh (Hiphil.Impf.3fs of shalak) — active "she casts down" truth — same root as v.11's Hophal hushlak but now in active voice - asah + hitslichah (Qal.Perf.3fs + Hiphil.Perf.3fs) — weqatal success pair "acted and prospered"
Voice chiasm: v.10 ACTIVE (horn casts down host) → v.11 PASSIVE (tamid removed, sanctuary cast down) → v.12 ACTIVE (horn casts down truth). The same root shalak appears as Hophal passive (v.11) and Hiphil active (v.12).
Daniel 8:13 (heavenly dialogue — "how long?")¶
Then I heard one saint speaking, and another saint said unto that certain [saint] which spake, How long [shall be] the vision [concerning] the daily [sacrifice], and the transgression of desolation, to give both the sanctuary and the host to be trodden under foot?
Key parsing: - ad-matay — "until when?" (standard prophetic lament formula) - he-chazon — "the vision" (articular, whole-vision subject) - pesha shomem — "transgression of desolation" (Qal participle attributive) - qodesh ve-tsaba mirmas — "sanctuary and host — a trampling" (compound direct object under single predicate; mirmas H4823 is miqtal-pattern result-state noun)
Daniel 8:14 (the answer — 2300 evening-mornings)¶
And he said unto me, Unto two thousand and three hundred days; then shall the sanctuary be cleansed.
Key parsing: - elai — "to me" (addressee shifts from between holy ones to Daniel directly) - erev boqer — asyndetic anarthrous singular compound (unique in the Hebrew Bible; hapax as counting unit) - alpayim ushlosh meot — dual + 300 = 2,300 units - we-nitsdaq (Niphal.Perf.3ms of tsadaq) — the only Niphal of tsadaq in the entire OT; "shall be vindicated/justified" (NOT "cleansed" — the Hebrew root is judicial, not ritual) - qodesh — anarthrous subject (sanctuary/holiness), contextually definite from v.11-13
Clause structure: Elliptical time phrase (no verb) + WQtX predictive weqatal. The ad-lock binds the answer to the question's ad-matay.
Daniel 8:15 (Daniel seeks understanding)¶
And it came to pass, when I, [even] I Daniel, had seen the vision, and sought for the meaning, then, behold, there stood before me as the appearance of a man.
Key parsing: - et-he-chazon — "the vision" (chazon = the whole vision complex) - va-avaqshah (Piel.Wayq.1cs of baqash) — "I earnestly sought" (Piel intensive + paragogic-he for volitional coloring) - vinah — "understanding" (noun cognate of biyn) - ke-mareh-gaver — "like the appearance of a mighty man" (mareh here = physical appearance, not the technical "vision" sense; gaver echoes Gabriel's name)
Daniel 8:16 (Gabriel commissioned)¶
And I heard a man's voice between [the banks of] Ulai, which called, and said, Gabriel, make this [man] to understand the vision.
Key parsing: - haven (Hiphil.Impv.2ms of biyn) — "make-understand!" (causative imperative) - le-hallaz — "to this one" (rare demonstrative, deictic pointing) - et-ham-mareh — "the mareh" (NOT he-chazon — the lexical switch is decisive; Gabriel is commanded to explain the mareh, not the whole chazon)
The chazon/mareh shift activates here: v.15 uses chazon (the whole vision); v.16 uses mareh (the specific time element to be explained).
Daniel 8:17 (Gabriel approaches, Daniel falls)¶
So he came near where I stood: and when he came, I was afraid, and fell upon my face: but he said unto me, Understand, O son of man: for at the time of the end [shall be] the vision.
Key parsing: - nivatti (Niphal.Perf.1cs of baat) — "I was terrified" (backgrounded WxQ0 clause — Daniel's internal state) - haven ben-adam — "understand, son of man!" (second Hiphil imperative of biyn; ben-adam = vocative marking creaturely frailty) - le-eth-qets he-chazon — "for to a time-of-end the vision" (verbless NmCl; the vision BELONGS to the time of the end)
Daniel 8:18 (Daniel in deep sleep, Gabriel touches him)¶
Now as he was speaking with me, I was in a deep sleep on my face toward the ground: but he touched me, and set me upright.
Key parsing: - nirdamti (Niphal.Perf.1cs of radam) — "I fell into deep sleep" (another Niphal passive — Daniel as passive recipient) - vayyaamideni (Hiphil.Wayq.3ms + 1cs suffix of amad) — "he caused me to stand" (Gabriel as active agent restoring Daniel)
Parallel: Dan 10:9-11 has the same pattern — Daniel falls prostrate, a hand touches him, he is raised to standing.
Daniel 8:19 (Gabriel's framing — appointed end)¶
And he said, Behold, I will make thee know what shall be in the last end of the indignation: for at the time appointed the end [shall be].
Key parsing: - hinneni modiaakha (Hiphil.Ptcp.ms + 2ms suffix of yada) — futurum instans "behold, I am about to cause you to know" - be-acharith hazzaam — "in the latter-end of the indignation" (acharith = terminus/outcome; hazzaam with article = a specific, known indignation) - le-moed qets — "at an appointed-time of end" (moed = a decreed appointment; escalation from v.17's eth "ordinary time" to moed "fixed time")
Triple end-horizon: v.17 eth-qets, v.19 moed-qets + acharith-hazzaam. Three markers converge to fix the vision's eschatological orientation.
Context — Daniel 8:1-7 (the ram and goat vision)¶
8:1 In the third year of the reign of king Belshazzar a vision appeared unto me, [even unto] me Daniel, after that which appeared unto me at the first. 8:2 And I saw in a vision; and it came to pass, when I saw, that I [was] at Shushan [in] the palace, which [is] in the province of Elam; and I saw in a vision, and I was by the river of Ulai. 8:3 Then I lifted up mine eyes, and saw, and, behold, there stood before the river a ram which had [two] horns... 8:4 I saw the ram pushing westward, and northward, and southward... he did according to his will, and became great. 8:5 And as I was considering, behold, an he goat came from the west on the face of the whole earth... the goat [had] a notable horn between his eyes. 8:6 And he came to the ram... and ran unto him in the fury of his power. 8:7 And I saw him come close unto the ram, and he was moved with choler against him, and smote the ram, and brake his two horns... he cast him down to the ground, and stamped upon him.
Context — Daniel 8:20-27 (Gabriel's explanation and sealing)¶
8:20 The ram which thou sawest having [two] horns [are] the kings of Media and Persia. 8:21 And the rough goat [is] the king of Grecia: and the great horn that [is] between his eyes [is] the first king. 8:22 Now that being broken, whereas four stood up for it, four kingdoms shall stand up out of the nation, but not in his power. 8:23 And in the latter time of their kingdom, when the transgressors are come to the full, a king of fierce countenance, and understanding dark sentences, shall stand up. 8:24 And his power shall be mighty, but not by his own power: and he shall destroy wonderfully, and shall prosper, and practise, and shall destroy the mighty and the holy people. 8:25 And through his policy also he shall cause craft to prosper in his hand; and he shall magnify [himself] in his heart, and by peace shall destroy many: he shall also stand up against the Prince of princes; but he shall be broken without hand. 8:26 And the vision of the evening and the morning which was told [is] true: wherefore shut thou up the vision; for it [shall be] for many days. 8:27 And I Daniel fainted, and was sick [certain] days; afterward I rose up, and did the king's business; and I was astonished at the vision, but none understood [it].
Note on v.26: mareh ha-erev ve-ha-boqer (the vision of the evening and the morning) — articles + conjunction, proving the compact form in v.14 (erev boqer without articles) is deliberate authorial compression. The chazon is sealed; the mareh is authenticated as true.
Note on v.27: ham-mareh ve-en mevin — Daniel was astonished at "the mareh" and "there was no understander" (Qal participle of biyn). The biyn chain fails here — Gabriel's explanation was incomplete.
Cross-Reference Verses¶
Mekhon Prototype¶
Exodus 15:17 Thou shalt bring them in, and plant them in the mountain of thine inheritance, [in] the place, O LORD, [which] thou hast made for thee to dwell in, [in] the Sanctuary, O Lord, [which] thy hands have established.
1 Kings 8:13 I have surely built thee an house to dwell in, a settled place for thee to abide in for ever.
2 Chronicles 6:2 But I have built an house of habitation for thee, and a place for thy dwelling for ever.
Note: mekhon (H4349) occurs in all three — the "established/settled place" of God's dwelling. Dan 8:11's mekhon miqdasho carries the same register: "the established place of his sanctuary."
Day of Atonement Formula¶
Leviticus 16:16 And he shall make an atonement for the holy [place], because of the uncleanness of the children of Israel, and because of their transgressions in all their sins... Leviticus 16:30 For on that day shall [the priest] make an atonement for you, to cleanse you, [that] ye may be clean from all your sins before the LORD.
Heavenly Sanctuary¶
Hebrews 8:1 Now of the things which we have spoken [this is] the sum: We have such an high priest, who is set on the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens; Hebrews 8:2 A minister of the sanctuary, and of the true tabernacle, which the Lord pitched, and not man. Hebrews 9:23 [It was] therefore necessary that the patterns of things in the heavens should be purified with these; but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these. Hebrews 9:24 For Christ is not entered into the holy places made with hands, [which are] the figures of the true; but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God for us:
Self-Exaltation Parallels¶
2 Thessalonians 2:4 Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God. Isaiah 14:13 For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north:
Trampling Motif¶
Revelation 11:2 But the court which is without the temple leave out, and measure it not; for it is given unto the Gentiles: and the holy city shall they tread under foot forty [and] two months. Luke 21:24 And they shall fall by the edge of the sword, and shall be led away captive into all nations: and Jerusalem shall be trodden down of the Gentiles, until the times of the Gentiles be fulfilled.
Vindication / Righteousness¶
Daniel 9:24 Seventy weeks are determined upon thy people and upon thy holy city, to finish the transgression, and to make an end of sins, and to make reconciliation for iniquity, and to bring in everlasting righteousness, and to seal up the vision and prophecy, and to anoint the most Holy. Romans 3:25-26 Whom God hath set forth [to be] a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past... that he might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus.
Stars / Maskilim Brackets¶
Daniel 12:3 And they that be wise shall shine as the brightness of the firmament; and they that turn many to righteousness as the stars for ever and ever. Revelation 12:4 And his tail drew the third part of the stars of heaven, and did cast them to the earth.
Sealing Arc¶
Daniel 12:4 But thou, O Daniel, shut up the words, and seal the book, [even] to the time of the end: many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall be increased. Daniel 12:9 And he said, Go thy way, Daniel: for the words [are] closed up and sealed till the time of the end. Daniel 12:10 Many shall be purified, and made white, and tried; but the wicked shall do wickedly: and none of the wicked shall understand; but the wise shall understand. Revelation 22:10 And he saith unto me, Seal not the sayings of the prophecy of this book: for the time is at hand.
Gabriel Returns in Daniel 9¶
Daniel 9:21 Yea, whiles I [was] speaking in prayer, even the man Gabriel, whom I had seen in the vision at the beginning, being caused to fly swiftly, touched me about the time of the evening oblation. Daniel 9:22 And he informed [me], and talked with me, and said, O Daniel, I am now come forth to give thee skill and understanding. Daniel 9:23 At the beginning of thy supplications the commandment came forth, and I am come to shew [thee]; for thou [art] greatly beloved: therefore understand the matter, and consider the vision.
Note: "the vision at the beginning" (ham-mareh bat-techillah) = the mareh of Dan 8:16,26. Gabriel returns to complete the commission from 8:16. "Understand the matter and consider the vision" uses both biyn and mareh — resuming the biyn chain.
Indignation Bracket¶
Daniel 11:36 And the king shall do according to his will; and he shall exalt himself, and magnify himself above every god, and shall speak marvellous things against the God of gods, and shall prosper till the indignation be accomplished: for that that is determined shall be done.
Note: zaam (H2195) appears in both 8:19 and 11:36. tsalach Hiphil ("prosper") appears in both 8:12 and 11:36. Double bracket binding the two chapters.
Evening-Morning / Genesis Echo¶
Genesis 1:5 And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day.
Note: The order "evening-then-morning" in Dan 8:14 matches the creation-day formula of Gen 1:5. But Dan 8:14's form is unique — asyndetic, anarthrous, functioning as a counting unit rather than a narrative marker.
Daniel 12 — Tamid and End¶
Daniel 12:11 And from the time [that] the daily [sacrifice] shall be taken away, and the abomination that maketh desolate set up, [there shall be] a thousand two hundred and ninety days. Daniel 12:13 But go thou thy way till the end [be]: for thou shalt rest, and stand in thy lot at the end of the days.
Church as Temple (for external corpus lead verification)¶
1 Corinthians 3:16 Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and [that] the Spirit of God dwelleth in you? 2 Corinthians 6:16 And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in [them]; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people.
Judgment Scene (Dan 7 parallel cycle)¶
Daniel 7:9 I beheld till the thrones were cast down, and the Ancient of days did sit, whose garment [was] white as snow, and the hair of his head like the pure wool: his throne [was like] the fiery flame, [and] his wheels [as] burning fire. Daniel 7:10 A fiery stream issued and came forth from before him: thousand thousands ministered unto him, and ten thousand times ten thousand stood before him: the judgment was set, and the books were opened.
