Primary Verses — Full Chapter/Section Context¶
A. The Tamid Institution (Exodus 29:38-46)¶
Exo 29:38 Now this is that which thou shalt offer upon the altar; two lambs of the first year day by day continually. Exo 29:39 The one lamb thou shalt offer in the morning; and the other lamb thou shalt offer at even: Exo 29:40 And with the one lamb a tenth deal of flour mingled with the fourth part of an hin of beaten oil; and the fourth part of an hin of wine for a drink offering. Exo 29:41 And the other lamb thou shalt offer at even, and shalt do thereto according to the meat offering of the morning, and according to the drink offering thereof, for a sweet savour, an offering made by fire unto the LORD. Exo 29:42 This shall be a continual burnt offering throughout your generations at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation before the LORD: where I will meet you, to speak there unto thee. Exo 29:43 And there I will meet with the children of Israel, and the tabernacle shall be sanctified by my glory. Exo 29:44 And I will sanctify the tabernacle of the congregation, and the altar: I will sanctify also both Aaron and his sons, to minister to me in the priest's office. Exo 29:45 And I will dwell among the children of Israel, and will be their God. Exo 29:46 And they shall know that I am the LORD their God, that brought them forth out of the land of Egypt, that I may dwell among them: I am the LORD their God.
Key: v.42 — tamid as the meeting point; v.45 — tamid enables divine dwelling.
B. Daily Incense and Annual Atonement on the Incense Altar (Exodus 30:1-10)¶
Exo 30:1 And thou shalt make an altar to burn incense upon: of shittim wood shalt thou make it. Exo 30:6 And thou shalt put it before the vail that is by the ark of the testimony, before the mercy seat that is over the testimony, where I will meet with thee. Exo 30:7 And Aaron shall burn thereon sweet incense every morning: when he dresseth the lamps, he shall burn incense upon it. Exo 30:8 And when Aaron lighteth the lamps at even, he shall burn incense upon it, a perpetual incense before the LORD throughout your generations. Exo 30:9 Ye shall offer no strange incense thereon, nor burnt sacrifice, nor meat offering; neither shall ye pour drink offering thereon. Exo 30:10 And Aaron shall make an atonement upon the horns of it once in a year with the blood of the sin offering of atonements: once in the year shall he make atonement upon it throughout your generations: it is most holy unto the LORD.
Key: The incense altar receives DAILY incense (vv.7-8, morning and evening = tamid pattern) and ANNUAL blood atonement (v.10, once a year). This single object bridges both services.
C. The Tamid Ordinance (Numbers 28:1-10)¶
Num 28:1-8 [Full text retrieved — see raw-data/verses-full.md] Num 28:3 Two lambs of the first year without spot day by day, for a continual burnt offering. Num 28:6 It is a continual burnt offering, which was ordained in mount Sinai for a sweet savour, a sacrifice made by fire unto the LORD. Num 28:10 This is the burnt offering of every sabbath, beside the continual burnt offering, and his drink offering.
Key: v.10 establishes the "beside the continual" (al olat hattamid) formula. Every special occasion adds TO the tamid; none replaces it.
D. The DOA Offerings — Tamid Continuation (Numbers 29:7-11)¶
Num 29:7 And ye shall have on the tenth day of this seventh month an holy convocation; and ye shall afflict your souls: ye shall not do any work therein: Num 29:8 But ye shall offer a burnt offering unto the LORD for a sweet savour; one young bullock, one ram, and seven lambs of the first year; they shall be unto you without blemish: Num 29:11 One kid of the goats for a sin offering; beside the sin offering of atonement, and the continual burnt offering, and the meat offering of it, and their drink offerings.
Key: v.11 — "beside (millebad) the sin offering of atonement (chattat hakkippurim), AND the continual burnt offering (olat hattamid)." The tamid CONTINUES on the Day of Atonement. The DOA sin offering is ADDITIONAL to the tamid, not a replacement.
Hebrew parsing (Num 29:11): millebad = "apart from, beside" (min + lebad); chattat hakkippurim = "sin offering of THE atonements" (construct + article + plural); olat hattamid = "burnt offering of THE continuity" (construct + article + singular).
E. Sin Offering Regulations — Blood Application (Leviticus 4, entire chapter)¶
Anointed priest's sin (vv.3-12):
Lev 4:5 And the priest that is anointed shall take of the bullock's blood, and bring it to the tabernacle of the congregation: Lev 4:6 And the priest shall dip his finger in the blood, and sprinkle of the blood seven times before the LORD, before the vail of the sanctuary. Lev 4:7 And the priest shall put some of the blood upon the horns of the altar of sweet incense before the LORD, which is in the tabernacle of the congregation; and shall pour all the blood of the bullock at the bottom of the altar of the burnt offering, which is at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation.
Congregation's sin (vv.13-21):
Lev 4:16-18 — Same blood path as the priest: brought INTO the Holy Place, sprinkled before the veil, applied to incense altar horns, poured at burnt-offering altar base. Lev 4:20 And he shall do with the bullock as he did with the bullock for a sin offering, so shall he do with this: and the priest shall make an atonement for them, and it shall be forgiven them.
Ruler's sin (vv.22-26):
Lev 4:25 And the priest shall take of the blood of the sin offering with his finger, and put it upon the horns of the altar of burnt offering, and shall pour out his blood at the bottom of the altar of burnt offering. Lev 4:26 And he shall burn all his fat upon the altar, as the fat of the sacrifice of peace offerings: and the priest shall make an atonement for him as concerning his sin, and it shall be forgiven him.
Common person's sin (vv.27-35):
Lev 4:30 And the priest shall take of the blood thereof with his finger, and put it upon the horns of the altar of burnt offering, and shall pour out all the blood thereof at the bottom of the altar. Lev 4:31 ...and the priest shall make an atonement for him, and it shall be forgiven him. Lev 4:35 ...and the priest shall make an atonement for his sin that he hath committed, and it shall be forgiven him.
Key observation — TWO blood paths: 1. Priest/congregation: Blood enters the Holy Place (sprinkled before the veil, applied to incense altar horns). Flesh burned outside camp (Lev 4:12, 21). 2. Ruler/common person: Blood stays at the outer altar (applied to burnt-offering altar horns). Flesh eaten by priests (Lev 6:26-29).
Key observation — kaphar+salach formula: Every category ends with "the priest shall make an atonement (vekhipper) for him, and it shall be forgiven (venislach) him" — vv.20, 26, 31, 35. This formula NEVER appears in Lev 16.
F. Sin Offering Eating Regulations (Leviticus 6:24-30)¶
Lev 6:25 Speak unto Aaron and to his sons, saying, This is the law of the sin offering: In the place where the burnt offering is killed shall the sin offering be killed before the LORD: it is most holy. Lev 6:26 The priest that offereth it for sin shall eat it: in the holy place shall it be eaten, in the court of the tabernacle of the congregation. Lev 6:29 All the males among the priests shall eat thereof: it is most holy. Lev 6:30 And no sin offering, whereof any of the blood is brought into the tabernacle of the congregation to reconcile withal in the holy place, shall be eaten: it shall be burnt in the fire.
Key — Mutual exclusion rule (v.30): If blood enters the Holy Place → flesh is burned (not eaten). If blood stays outside → flesh is eaten by priests. This is the two-path disposal system. The eating path (Lev 6:26) is the second mechanism of sin transfer, explained in Lev 10:17.
G. Moses-Aaron Confrontation — Eating as Sin-Bearing (Leviticus 10:16-20)¶
Lev 10:16 And Moses diligently sought the goat of the sin offering, and, behold, it was burnt: and he was angry with Eleazar and Ithamar, the sons of Aaron which were left alive, saying, Lev 10:17 Wherefore have ye not eaten the sin offering in the holy place, seeing it is most holy, and God hath given it you to bear the iniquity of the congregation, to make atonement for them before the LORD? Lev 10:18 Behold, the blood of it was not brought in within the holy place: ye should indeed have eaten it in the holy place, as I commanded. Lev 10:19 And Aaron said unto Moses, Behold, this day have they offered their sin offering and their burnt offering before the LORD; and such things have befallen me: and if I had eaten the sin offering to day, should it have been accepted in the sight of the LORD? Lev 10:20 And when Moses heard that, he was content.
Key — v.17: Moses reveals the PURPOSE of priestly eating: "to bear (laset, Qal InfCon of nasa) the iniquity (avon) of the congregation (edah), to make atonement (lekapper, Piel InfCon of kaphar) for them before the LORD." The dual infinitive chain: nasa (bearing) → kaphar (atonement). Eating IS sin-bearing. This is the second mechanism of sin transfer.
Key — v.18: The blood-destination rule. Since blood was NOT brought into the Holy Place (lo huba el-haqqodesh penimah), the priests SHOULD have eaten the flesh. Moses' anger confirms the mutual exclusion of Lev 6:30.
H. Ambient Defilement — Third Transfer Mechanism (Leviticus 15:31; Numbers 19:13, 20)¶
Lev 15:31 Thus shall ye separate the children of Israel from their uncleanness; that they die not in their uncleanness, when they defile my tabernacle that is among them.
Hebrew parsing: betamam (Piel InfCon of tame + 3mp suffix) — "when they defile" (Piel = causative of being unclean). The verb is tame in the Piel stem — active defilement of the mishkan. This defilement happens WITHOUT blood sacrifice, WITHOUT priestly mediation — it is ambient, arising from the mere proximity of the unclean to the sanctuary.
Num 19:13 Whosoever toucheth the dead body of any man that is dead, and purifieth not himself, defileth the tabernacle of the LORD; and that soul shall be cut off from Israel: because the water of separation was not sprinkled upon him, he shall be unclean; his uncleanness is yet upon him. Num 19:20 But the man that shall be unclean, and shall not purify himself, that soul shall be cut off from among the congregation, because he hath defiled the sanctuary of the LORD: the water of separation hath not been sprinkled upon him; he is unclean.
Key: Both Num 19:13 and 19:20 state that the unclean person "defileth the tabernacle/sanctuary of the LORD." No blood transfer occurs. No sacrifice is offered. The defilement reaches the sanctuary DIRECTLY through the person's presence in the camp. This is the THIRD mechanism of sin transfer — ambient defilement. It explains why Lev 16:16 begins with "mittumot" (from the impurities) — tumot enters without blood.
I. Day of Atonement — Full Chapter (Leviticus 16:1-34)¶
[Full text of all 34 verses retrieved — see raw-data/verses-full.md for complete text]
Key verses for this study:
Lev 16:14 And he shall take of the blood of the bullock, and sprinkle it with his finger upon the mercy seat eastward; and before the mercy seat shall he sprinkle of the blood with his finger seven times. Lev 16:15 Then shall he kill the goat of the sin offering, that is for the people, and bring his blood within the vail, and do with that blood as he did with the blood of the bullock, and sprinkle it upon the mercy seat, and before the mercy seat: Lev 16:16 And he shall make an atonement for the holy place, because of the uncleanness of the children of Israel, and because of their transgressions in all their sins: and so shall he do for the tabernacle of the congregation, that remaineth among them in the midst of their uncleanness. Lev 16:17 And there shall be no man in the tabernacle of the congregation when he goeth in to make an atonement in the holy place, until he come out, and have made an atonement for himself, and for his household, and for all the congregation of Israel. Lev 16:18 And he shall go out unto the altar that is before the LORD, and make an atonement for it; and shall take of the blood of the bullock, and of the blood of the goat, and put it upon the horns of the altar round about. Lev 16:19 And he shall sprinkle of the blood upon it with his finger seven times, and cleanse it, and hallow it from the uncleanness of the children of Israel. Lev 16:20 And when he hath made an end of reconciling the holy place, and the tabernacle of the congregation, and the altar, he shall bring the live goat: Lev 16:21 And Aaron shall lay both his hands upon the head of the live goat, and confess over him all the iniquities of the children of Israel, and all their transgressions in all their sins, putting them upon the head of the goat, and shall send him away by the hand of a fit man into the wilderness: Lev 16:22 And the goat shall bear upon him all their iniquities unto a land not inhabited: and he shall let go the goat in the wilderness. Lev 16:30 For on that day shall the priest make an atonement for you, to cleanse you, that ye may be clean from all your sins before the LORD.
J. Blood Theology Foundation (Leviticus 17:11)¶
Lev 17:11 For the life of the flesh is in the blood: and I have given it to you upon the altar to make an atonement for your souls: for it is the blood that maketh an atonement for the soul.
Hebrew parsing: nephesh habasar baddam hi — "the life/soul of the flesh in the blood she/it [is]." Two instances of kaphar (Piel): lekapper (InfCon, purpose — "to make atonement") and yekapper (Impf.3ms — "makes atonement"). Blood given by God ON the altar for atonement — this is the theological foundation for BOTH daily blood application and annual DOA blood application.
K. Priestly Sin-Bearing — nasa in Three Registers¶
Register 1 — Divine (Exo 34:7):
Exo 34:7 Keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, and that will by no means clear the guilty; visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children, and upon the children's children, unto the third and to the fourth generation.
"Forgiving" = nose (Qal active participle of nasa) — God LIFTS/BEARS iniquity, transgression, sin. Three sin terms: avon, pesha, chataah — the same three that appear in Lev 16:21.
Register 2 — Priestly (Exo 28:38):
Exo 28:38 And it shall be upon Aaron's forehead, that Aaron may bear (venasa) the iniquity of the holy things, which the children of Israel shall hallow in all their holy gifts; and it shall be always (tamid) upon his forehead, that they may be accepted before the LORD.
Hebrew parsing: venasa (Qal.Perf.3ms of nasa) — Aaron BEARS the iniquity of the holy things. Note tamid — this is continual/perpetual. The priestly plate is ALWAYS on his forehead. Result: "they may be accepted (leratson) before the LORD."
Register 3 — Priestly eating (Lev 10:17):
Lev 10:17 ...God hath given it you to bear (laset, Qal InfCon of nasa) the iniquity of the congregation, to make atonement for them before the LORD.
Register 4 — Removal via scapegoat (Lev 16:22):
Lev 16:22 And the goat shall bear (venasa, Qal.Perf.3ms of nasa) upon him all their iniquities unto a land not inhabited.
Key nasa contrast: Same verb, opposite directions: - Priest BEARS sin INWARD (Lev 10:17 — eating in the sanctuary, bringing sin into the priestly body and thus into the sanctuary system) - Scapegoat BEARS sin OUTWARD (Lev 16:22 — carrying all iniquities to erets gezerah, a land of cutting off/separation)
Register 5 — Messianic (Isaiah 53:4, 11, 12):
Isa 53:4 Surely he hath borne (nasa) our griefs, and carried our sorrows... Isa 53:11 ...by his knowledge shall my righteous servant justify many; for he shall bear (yisbol) their iniquities. Isa 53:12 ...he bare (nasa) the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors.
L. The kaphar+salach Formula Passages¶
Occurrences verified from H5545 lookup and H3722 collocations:
| Verse | Hebrew Pattern | KJV |
|---|---|---|
| Lev 4:20 | vekhipper... venislach lahem | "priest shall make atonement... and it shall be forgiven them" |
| Lev 4:26 | vekhipper... venislach lo | "priest shall make atonement... and it shall be forgiven him" |
| Lev 4:31 | vekhipper... venislach lo | same pattern |
| Lev 4:35 | vekhipper... venislach lo | same pattern |
| Lev 5:10 | vekhipper... venislach lo | same pattern |
| Lev 5:13 | vekhipper... venislach lo | same pattern |
| Lev 5:16 | vekhipper... venislach lo | same pattern |
| Lev 5:18 | vekhipper... venislach lo | same pattern |
| Lev 6:7 | vekhipper... venislach lo | same pattern |
| Lev 19:22 | vekhipper... venislach lo | same pattern |
| Num 15:25 | vekhipper... venislach lahem | same pattern |
| Num 15:26 | venislach lekhol-adat | "it shall be forgiven all the congregation" |
| Num 15:28 | vekhipper... venislach lo | same pattern |
VERIFICATION: salach (H5545) NEVER appears in Leviticus 16. The H5545 lookup shows 49 total occurrences. All Niphal forms (nislach) occur in Lev 4-5, 6:7, 19:22, Num 15:25-28. None in Lev 16. This is the absolute vocabulary distinction: daily = kaphar+salach; annual = kaphar+taher.
M. The kaphar+taher Formula (Leviticus 16:30)¶
Lev 16:30 For on that day shall the priest make an atonement (yekapper) for you, to cleanse (letaher) you, that ye may be clean (titharu) from all your sins before the LORD.
Three-verb chain: yekapper (Piel.Impf.3ms of kaphar) → letaher (Piel.InfCon of taher) → titharu (Qal.Impf.2mp of taher). This is the ONLY verse combining kaphar and taher in this formula. See grammar-reference entry lev-16-30.md for full analysis.
VERIFICATION: taher (H2891) NEVER appears in the Lev 4-5 sin-offering contexts. Taher in Leviticus appears in chs. 11-15 (ceremonial purity laws), ch. 16 (DOA), and ch. 22 (priestly purity). It is absent from ch. 4-5's sin-offering regulations. This confirms the absolute vocabulary partition.
N. The Three-Category Formula (Lev 16:16, 16:21, Exo 34:7)¶
| Passage | Category 1 | Category 2 | Category 3 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lev 16:16 | mittumot (from impurities) | umipisheihem (from their transgressions) | lekhol-chatotam (with respect to all their sins) |
| Lev 16:21 | kol-avonot (all iniquities) | kol-pisheihem (all their transgressions) | lekhol-chatotam (with respect to all their sins) |
| Exo 34:7 | avon (iniquity) | vafesha (and transgression) | vechataat (and sin) |
Key observations: - Lev 16:16 begins with TUMOT — impurities/uncleannesses. This is NOT a sin-term but a defilement-category. It includes ambient defilement (the third transfer mechanism). - Lev 16:21 uses AVONOT — iniquities (moral guilt). Different first term than v.16. - Both Lev 16:16 and 16:21 end with chatotam — "their sins" — the broadest catch-all. - Exo 34:7 uses the same three categories (avon/pesha/chataah) as God's self-description. The DOA confession formula (Lev 16:21) echoes God's own nature statement.
O. NT Fulfillment Passages¶
Hebrews 7:25 — Continual Intercession (tamid antitype):
Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them.
Greek parsing: zon (Pres.Act.Ptcp of zao, "living") — PRESENT tense, ongoing. entugchanein (Pres.Act.Inf of entugchano, "to intercede") — PRESENT tense, ongoing. pantote = "always." The present tenses establish Christ's intercession as CONTINUAL — the tamid pattern in heavenly ministry.
Hebrews 9:12 — Once-for-All Entry:
Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption.
ephapax = "once for all" — the annual pattern, not the daily.
Hebrews 10:11-12 — Standing vs. Sitting:
Heb 10:11 And every priest standeth (hesteken, Perf.Act.Ind of histemi) daily ministering and offering oftentimes the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins: Heb 10:12 But this man, after he had offered one sacrifice for sins for ever, sat down (ekathisen, Aor.Act.Ind of kathizo) on the right hand of God.
Greek parsing: - hesteken = PERFECT tense ("stands and continues standing") — the ongoing, unfinished daily service - leitourgon = Pres.Act.Ptcp ("ministering") — continuous action - prospheron = Pres.Act.Ptcp ("offering") — continuous action - ekathisen = AORIST tense ("sat down") — single completed act - prosenengkas = Aor.Act.Ptcp ("having offered") — antecedent completed action
The contrast is grammatically absolute: PERFECT standing (daily, ongoing, never finished) vs. AORIST sitting (once-for-all, completed).
John 1:29 — The Lamb Who Takes Away:
The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.
Greek parsing: ho airon (Pres.Act.Ptcp of airo, G142) — "the one TAKING AWAY." Present participle = ongoing/continuous action. airo is the LXX's primary equivalent of nasa (H5375, PMI 24.47). John calls Jesus "the Lamb" (amnos, G286 — the same word LXX uses for the tamid lamb in Exo 29:38-42) "who is [continuously] taking away" (present tense nasa/airo) "the sin of the world."
