From Word Studies Library¶
sakal — H7919 (שָׂכַל)¶
Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/H7919-sakal.md
- Core: Verb, primitive root, 63 verses (70 tokens), 16 books
- Definition: To be (causatively, make or act) circumspect and hence intelligent — consider, expert, instruct, prosper, prudent(-ly), skill(-ful), understand(-ing), wise(-ly)
- Stem distribution: Hiphil dominates (~60 of 70 tokens). Encodes both internal state (being circumspect) and outcomes (succeeding, prospering). The Hiphil is used even for intransitive "be wise."
- Daniel density: 9 occurrences = 2.5 per 100 verses — the highest density of any book
- Daniel occurrences: Dan 1:17; 9:13; 9:22; 9:25; 11:33; 11:35; 12:3; 12:10 (plus 8:25 for the horn's "policy")
- Semantic range: (1) Prudent behavior — wise conduct in practice (1Sa 18:14); (2) Comprehension — understanding divine reality (Psa 14:2; Dan 12:10); (3) Instruction — imparting wisdom to others (Dan 11:33; Psa 32:8); (4) Success/prosperity — wisdom bearing fruit (Josh 1:8); (5) Divine insight — revelation-grade understanding (Dan 9:22; 1:17); (6) The Wise Ones (maskilim) — eschatological category (Dan 12:3; 11:33; 11:35)
- LXX primary mapping: syniemi (G4920) — 31 co-occurrences, PMI 23.84 — "put together mentally"
- Key distinction from biyn (H995): sakal = synthetic prudence (looking at the whole picture, acting with circumspection, including outcome); biyn = analytical discernment (separating, distinguishing, parsing truth from error)
- See also: TR-sakal-syniemi.md, WG-wise.md
biyn — H995 (בִּין)¶
Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/H995-biyn.md
- Core: Verb, primitive root, 162 verses (189 tokens), 18 books
- Definition: To separate mentally, distinguish — attend, consider, discern, instruct, perceive, understand
- Stem distribution: Qal 45, Hiphil 30, Hithpael 22, Niphal 21, Piel 1
- Daniel density: 19 occurrences = 5.3 per 100 verses — highest of any book, nearly double Proverbs
- The biyn chain in Daniel (19 occurrences): 8:5, 8:15, 8:16, 8:17, 8:27, 9:2, 9:22, 9:23, 10:1, 10:11, 10:12, 10:14, 11:33, 11:37, 12:8, 12:10 (plus nominal form biynah in 1:20, 9:22, 10:1)
- Hiphil (causative): "cause to understand, give insight" — Dan 8:16 (Gabriel's commission), 11:33 (maskilim instruct many)
- Qal: "understand, discern" — Dan 12:8 (Daniel did NOT understand), 12:10 (maskilim SHALL understand)
- LXX primary mapping: syniemi (G4920) — 63 co-occurrences, PMI 27.04 — same Greek word for both sakal and biyn
- Critical for Dan 12:10: Both sakal AND biyn appear together — ha-maskilim (Hiphil participle of sakal) yavinu (Qal imperfect of biyn). The LXX flattens both to syniemi, losing the Hebrew distinction.
biynah — H998 (בִּינָה)¶
Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/H998-biynah.md
- Core: Feminine noun from biyn (H995), 38 verses, 8 books
- Translation: "understanding" (79%)
- Daniel: 4 occurrences — all tied to Daniel's gift of discernment (Dan 1:20; 8:15; 9:22; 10:1)
- Dan 10:1: "ubiynah lo bammar'eh" — "and understanding [was] his in the vision" — confirms the biyn chain resolution
tsadaq — H6663 (צָדַק)¶
Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/H6663-tsadaq.md
- Core: Verb, 41 occurrences across 13 books
- Stem distribution: Qal 22 (be righteous), Hiphil 12 (justify/declare righteous), Piel 5, Niphal 1 (Dan 8:14 — ONLY Niphal in OT), Hithpael 1
- Key for this study:
- Niphal (Dan 8:14): nitsdaq — the sanctuary receives vindication (passive). Only occurrence.
- Hiphil participle (Dan 12:3): matsdiqey — "those causing many to be righteous" (causative). Construct form.
- Hiphil imperfect (Isa 53:11): yatsdiq — "my righteous servant shall justify many" (causative)
- The matsdiqey-nitsdaq connection: Same root, different stems. Niphal = sanctuary receives vindication from God. Hiphil = maskilim cause many to be righteous. Complementary roles.
- LXX: dikaioo (G1344) — 21 co-occurrences. The forensic declaration sense.
barar — H1305 (בָּרַר)¶
Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/H1305-barar.md
- Core: Verb, 16 verses, 11 books
- Definition: To clarify, examine, select — make bright, choice, chosen, cleanse, pure, purge
- Daniel occurrences: Dan 11:35 (Piel InfCon — "to purge"), Dan 12:10 (Hithpael Impf — "shall be purified")
- Stem shift: Dan 11:35 = Piel (intensive, external agent refines); Dan 12:10 = Hithpael (reflexive, the many purify themselves)
- Collocates with laban (H3835) 2x — ONLY in Dan 11:35 and 12:10
laban — H3835 (לָבַן)¶
Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/H3835-laban.md
- Core: Verb, 8 verses, 6 books
- Two senses: (1) Brick-making (Qal — Gen 11:3; Exo 5:7,14); (2) Whitening/purification (Hiphil/Hithpael)
- Daniel occurrences: Dan 11:35 (Hiphil InfCon — "to make white"), Dan 12:10 (Hithpael Impf — "made white/be whitened")
- Stem shift: Dan 11:35 = Hiphil (causative, external agent makes white); Dan 12:10 = Hithpael (reflexive, the many become white themselves)
- Moral/spiritual whitening: Isa 1:18 ("white as snow"), Psa 51:7 ("whiter than snow")
tsaraph — H6884 (צָרַף)¶
Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/H6884-tsaraph.md
- Core: Verb, 29 verses (33 tokens), 10 books
- Definition: To fuse (metal), refine — cast, refine, founder, goldsmith, melt, pure, try
- Daniel occurrences: Dan 11:35 (Qal InfCon — "to try/refine"), Dan 12:10 (Niphal Impf — "tried/refined")
- Stem shift: Dan 11:35 = Qal (basic refining action); Dan 12:10 = Niphal (passive — "be refined")
- Mal 3:2-3 parallel: Uses tsaraph (Piel) for God purifying the sons of Levi. Same refining imagery.
- Zec 13:9 parallel: "I will refine (tsaraph) them as silver is refined (tsaraph)" — but does NOT include the full barar-laban-tsaraph triad
The Purification Triad Summary¶
The three verbs barar-laban-tsaraph appear together ONLY in Dan 11:35 and 12:10. The stem shifts across the two passages show maturation:
| Verb | Dan 11:35 (historical) | Dan 12:10 (eschatological) |
|---|---|---|
| barar | Piel (intensive — external purging) | Hithpael (reflexive — self-purification) |
| laban | Hiphil (causative — external whitening) | Hithpael (reflexive — becoming white) |
| tsaraph | Qal (basic — refining action) | Niphal (passive — being refined) |
Pattern: In 11:35, the agents are external — the maskilim are acted upon by persecution. In 12:10, the process is internalized — the many purify themselves, become white, are refined. The historical suffering produces eschatological identity.
zahar — H2094 (זָהַר)¶
Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/H2094-zahar.md (newly generated)
- Core: Verb, 22 tokens in 19 verses, 7 books
- Definition: To gleam; figuratively, to enlighten (by caution) — admonish, shine, teach, warn
- Stem distribution: Hiphil 15 (warn/shine), Niphal 7 (be warned/take warning)
- Distribution: Ezekiel dominates (12 of 19 verses = 63%), concentrated in the watchman passages (chs. 3, 33)
- Critical finding: 18 of 19 verses render zahar as "warn/admonish/teach." Only Dan 12:3 renders it "shine."
- Cognate noun: H2096 zohar ("brightness") — appears in Eze 8:2 and Dan 12:3, confirming the radiance root
- Root etymology: The primitive root means "to gleam." The warning sense developed from the metaphor of "shedding light on" a threat — illuminating danger.
- Theological significance for Dan 12:3: The maskilim "shine" (yazihru, Hiphil imperfect of zahar) using the same verb root that in 28 of 29 occurrences means "warn/instruct." This suggests the maskilim's shining IS their warning/teaching function — their brightness is not merely eschatological reward but the radiance of their instructing ministry. The one who warns IS the one who shines.
- Key Ezekiel parallels:
- Eze 3:17 — "hear the word at my mouth, and give them warning from me"
- Eze 33:3 — "he blow the trumpet, and warn the people"
- Eze 33:9 — "if thou warn the wicked of his way to turn from it"
tsaddiyq — H6662 (צַדִּיק)¶
Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/H6662-tsaddiyq.md
- Core: Adjective, 197 verses (210 tokens), 25 books
- Translation: "righteous" (77%), "just" (22%)
- Key for this study: The righteous (tsaddiyq) are contrasted with/complementary to the wise (maskilim). Mat 13:43 uses dikaios (the LXX equivalent of tsaddiyq) where Dan 12:3 uses maskilim — a vocabulary shift from "wise" to "righteous."

H7227 rab — Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/H7227-rab.md — "many, great" (443 verses, density 6.4 in Daniel — highest of any book). The "many" (rabbim) are those the maskilim instruct (11:33) and turn to righteousness (12:3).
Translation Relationships Read¶
TR-sakal-syniemi — Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/TR-sakal-syniemi.md
- sakal → syniemi (31 co-occ, PMI 23.84). Key shift: Hebrew sakal has a "prosperity/success" outcome dimension that Greek syniemi lacks. The "maskil" title dimension is not carried into NT syniemi usage. NT syniemi adds a concealment emphasis (parables — Mat 13).
TR-biyn-syniemi — Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/TR-biyn-syniemi.md
- biyn → syniemi (63 co-occ, PMI 27.04). Both Hebrew words map to the SAME Greek word, losing the Hebrew distinction. Daniel's "understanding progression" (8:27 no understanding → 12:10 the wise shall understand) provides the bridge concept the NT applies eschatologically.
TR-tsadaq-dikaioo — Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/word-studies/TR-tsadaq-dikaioo.md
- tsadaq → dikaioo (21 co-occ, PMI 26.99). Semantic shift: Hebrew covers 5 stems with distinct meanings; Greek narrows to forensic declaration. The Niphal (Dan 8:14 vindication) has no direct NT parallel via dikaioo. Paul extends the Hiphil concept: justification shifts from verdict on the already-righteous to God's gracious declaration over the ungodly (Rom 4:5).
Word Groups Read¶

Fresh Lookups (no library entry)¶
zahar — H2094 (see above, newly generated library entry)¶
raqiya — H7549 (רָקִיעַ) — "firmament"¶
Source: Fresh lookup (search_strongs.py)
- Occurrences: 17 total, 5 translations
- Translation: "the firmament" (9x), "in the firmament" (4x), "of the firmament" (2x), "a firmament" (1x), "firmament" (1x)
- Definition: From root meaning "to spread out" — properly an expanse, the visible arch of the sky
- Distribution: Genesis 1 (9x — creation account), Job 37:18, Psa 19:1, Psa 150:1, Ezekiel 1 (5x — throne vision), Daniel 12:3
- Significance for Dan 12:3: The raqiya is the creation firmament (Gen 1:6-8,14-17,20). The maskilim shining "as the brightness of the firmament" (kezohar haraqiya) uses creation vocabulary — linking the maskilim to the creation order. The same firmament that holds the luminaries (Gen 1:14-17) is the image for the maskilim's radiance.
sekel — H7922 (שֶׂכֶל) — "intelligence, prudence"¶
Source: Fresh lookup (search_strongs.py)
- Occurrences: 19 total, 16 translations
- Definition: From sakal (H7919) — intelligence; by implication, success — discretion, knowledge, policy, prudence, sense, understanding, wisdom
- Key verse: Dan 8:25 — "through his policy (sekel)" — the horn's counterfeit "wisdom," contrasting the maskilim's genuine wisdom (sakal/maskilim)
da'ath — H1847 (דַּעַת) — "knowledge"¶
Source: Fresh lookup (search_strongs.py)
- Occurrences: 103 total (93 unique verses per lexicon)
- Definition: From yada (H3045) — knowledge
- Key verses: Dan 1:4 ("cunning in knowledge"), Dan 12:4 ("knowledge shall be increased"), Isa 53:11 ("by his knowledge shall my righteous servant justify many")
- Connection to maskilim: Dan 12:4's "knowledge shall be increased" (tirbbeh hadda'ath) uses da'ath — the knowledge that increases after unsealing connects to the maskilim's understanding in 12:10 (yavinu). Da'ath is the content; biyn is the capacity to grasp it.
- Isa 53:11 connection: "By his knowledge" (beda'to) the servant justifies many — the same "knowledge leading to justification" pattern as the maskilim who "turn many to righteousness" (matsdiqey harabbim)
leqach — H3948 (לֶקַח) — "instruction, learning"¶
Source: Fresh lookup (search_strongs.py)
- Occurrences: 10 total, 6 translations
- Definition: Properly something received, i.e. mentally instruction (whether on the part of the teacher or hearer); also inveiglement — doctrine, learning, fair speech
- Key verses: Pro 1:5 ("a wise man will hear and increase learning [leqach]"), Pro 4:2 ("I give you good doctrine"), Pro 9:9
- Connection to maskilim: The maskilim's teaching function (Dan 11:33) produces leqach in others — the "learning" that a wise teacher imparts.
