# Grammar Analysis: Hebrews 9:11-22 (The Blood of Christ and Covenantal Blood-Purification)
**Mode:** Passage unit analysis (context-neutral)
**Scope:** Heb 9:11-22 as a coherent argumentative unit — the greater mediation of Christ the high priest (vv.11-12), the *a fortiori* purification of conscience (vv.13-14), the covenant-death logic (vv.15-17), and the Sinai-covenant blood-ritual paradigm (vv.18-22).
**Aim:** Verse-by-verse parsing; tense/mood/voice map; documentation of the load-bearing grammatical features: (a) the paired διά-constructions in vv.11-12 (instrumental vs. locative), (b) παραγενόμενος as antecedent/circumstantial aor.mid.ptcp., (c) εἰσῆλθεν + ἐφάπαξ (aor. of once-for-all entry) paired with εὑράμενος (aor.mid.ptcp. "having obtained"), (d) the *a fortiori* (πόσῳ μᾶλλον) correlation in vv.13-14, (e) the attenuated future καθαριεῖ with future-purpose articular infinitive εἰς τὸ λατρεύειν, (f) the διαθήκη / διαθέμενος wordplay of vv.15-17 (covenant vs. last-will / testator), (g) the genitive absolute λαληθείσης πάσης ἐντολῆς (v.19), (h) the perfect passive ἐγκεκαίνισται (v.18) as resultant-state, (i) the gnomic-present maxim χωρὶς αἱματεκχυσίας οὐ γίνεται ἄφεσις (v.22). Grammar only; theological conclusions deferred.

## 1. Text (Nestle 1904 / parser output with KJV)
| v. | Greek (N1904) | KJV |
|----|---------------|-----|
| 11 | Χριστὸς δὲ παραγενόμενος ἀρχιερεὺς τῶν γενομένων ἀγαθῶν, διὰ τῆς μείζονος καὶ τελειοτέρας σκηνῆς οὐ χειροποιήτου, τοῦτ' ἔστιν οὐ ταύτης τῆς κτίσεως, | But Christ being come an high priest of good things to come, by a greater and more perfect tabernacle, not made with hands, that is to say, not of this building; |
| 12 | οὐδὲ δι' αἵματος τράγων καὶ μόσχων, διὰ δὲ τοῦ ἰδίου αἵματος, εἰσῆλθεν ἐφάπαξ εἰς τὰ ἅγια, αἰωνίαν λύτρωσιν εὑράμενος. | Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption [for us]. |
| 13 | εἰ γὰρ τὸ αἷμα τράγων καὶ ταύρων καὶ σποδὸς δαμάλεως ῥαντίζουσα τοὺς κεκοινωμένους ἁγιάζει πρὸς τὴν τῆς σαρκὸς καθαρότητα, | For if the blood of bulls and of goats, and the ashes of an heifer sprinkling the unclean, sanctifieth to the purifying of the flesh: |
| 14 | πόσῳ μᾶλλον τὸ αἷμα τοῦ Χριστοῦ, ὃς διὰ Πνεύματος αἰωνίου ἑαυτὸν προσήνεγκεν ἄμωμον τῷ Θεῷ, καθαριεῖ τὴν συνείδησιν ἡμῶν ἀπὸ νεκρῶν ἔργων εἰς τὸ λατρεύειν Θεῷ ζῶντι. | How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God? |
| 15 | Καὶ διὰ τοῦτο διαθήκης καινῆς μεσίτης ἐστίν, ὅπως θανάτου γενομένου εἰς ἀπολύτρωσιν τῶν ἐπὶ τῇ πρώτῃ διαθήκῃ παραβάσεων τὴν ἐπαγγελίαν λάβωσιν οἱ κεκλημένοι τῆς αἰωνίου κληρονομίας. | And for this cause he is the mediator of the new testament, that by means of death, for the redemption of the transgressions under the first testament, they which are called might receive the promise of eternal inheritance. |
| 16 | ὅπου γὰρ διαθήκη, θάνατον ἀνάγκη φέρεσθαι τοῦ διαθεμένου· | For where a testament is, there must also of necessity be the death of the testator. |
| 17 | διαθήκη γὰρ ἐπὶ νεκροῖς βεβαία, ἐπεὶ μή ποτε ἰσχύει ὅτε ζῇ ὁ διαθέμενος. | For a testament is of force after men are dead: otherwise it is of no strength at all while the testator liveth. |
| 18 | Ὅθεν οὐδὲ ἡ πρώτη χωρὶς αἵματος ἐνκεκαίνισται. | Whereupon neither the first testament was dedicated without blood. |
| 19 | λαληθείσης γὰρ πάσης ἐντολῆς κατὰ τὸν νόμον ὑπὸ Μωϋσέως παντὶ τῷ λαῷ, λαβὼν τὸ αἷμα τῶν μόσχων καὶ τῶν τράγων μετὰ ὕδατος καὶ ἐρίου κοκκίνου καὶ ὑσσώπου, αὐτό τε τὸ βιβλίον καὶ πάντα τὸν λαὸν ἐράντισεν, | For when Moses had spoken every precept to all the people according to the law, he took the blood of calves and of goats, with water, and scarlet wool, and hyssop, and sprinkled both the book, and all the people, |
| 20 | λέγων Τοῦτο τὸ αἷμα τῆς διαθήκης ἧς ἐνετείλατο πρὸς ὑμᾶς ὁ Θεός. | Saying, This is the blood of the testament which God hath enjoined unto you. |
| 21 | καὶ τὴν σκηνὴν δὲ καὶ πάντα τὰ σκεύη τῆς λειτουργίας τῷ αἵματι ὁμοίως ἐράντισεν. | And moreover he sprinkled with blood both the tabernacle, and all the vessels of the ministry. |
| 22 | καὶ σχεδὸν ἐν αἵματι πάντα καθαρίζεται κατὰ τὸν νόμον, καὶ χωρὶς αἱματεκχυσίας οὐ γίνεται ἄφεσις. | And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and without shedding of blood is no remission. |

**Verbal frame:** nominative subject Χριστός fronted, followed by an antecedent/circumstantial aor.mid.ptcp. (παραγενόμενος). The ptcp. is temporally antecedent ("having arrived/appeared"), not concessive. ἀρχιερεύς is predicate-nominative apposition pinned to Χριστός via παραγενόμενος ("Christ arrived *as* high priest"). The second attributive ptcp. τῶν γενομένων ἀγαθῶν is adnominal to a suppressed head — idiomatic shorthand for "the good things that have come to pass" (variant reading μελλόντων, "about to come," flips to a future orientation; see BDF §339). Two comparative adjectives (μείζονος, τελειοτέρας) modify σκηνῆς in a chiastic flank around καί. Note: **διά + genitive here is locative/spatial**, not strictly instrumental — "through (the venue of)" the greater tabernacle (see §3 below). See [greek/paired-middle-participles](../greek/paired-middle-participles.md) for the stacked middle participles, and [greek/genitive-of-quality-apposition](../greek/genitive-of-quality-apposition.md) for the attributive genitive.
### Heb 9:12

| 5 | διὰ δὲ τοῦ ἰδίου αἵματος | διά / δέ / ὁ / ἴδιος / αἷμα | G1223/G1161/G3588/G2398/G129 | Prep (+ gen.) + Conj + T-GSN + A-GSN + N-GSN |
| 6 | εἰσῆλθεν | εἰσέρχομαι | G1525 | **V-2AAI-3S** (Aor Act Ind 3s — main verb) |
| 7 | ἐφάπαξ | ἐφάπαξ | G2178 | Adv ("once for all") |
**Verbal frame:** the main clause finally lands on εἰσῆλθεν (aor.act.ind.), flanked by two adverbial elements — the negated δι' αἵματος τράγων καὶ μόσχων and the positive διὰ δὲ τοῦ ἰδίου αἵματος. Here διά + gen. is clearly **instrumental** ("by means of"), shifting from v.11's locative sense (see §3). The anaphoric ἐφάπαξ (Strong's G2178) ties to 7:27 and anticipates 10:10 — lexicalized "once-for-all." The trailing εὑράμενος is an aor.mid.ptcp. of **attendant circumstance / coincident action** (Wallace *GGBB* 624-640): not temporally prior to εἰσῆλθεν but conceptually coincident — "he entered, and in doing so secured." The middle voice of εὑράμενος is semantically apt ("procured for himself / in his own interest"); contrast the common act. εὗρον. See [greek/participle-perfect-passive-state](../greek/participle-perfect-passive-state.md) for the contrast between perfect-stative and aor.mid. of attendant circumstance.

| 8 | τοὺς κεκοινωμένους | ὁ / κοινόω | G3588/G2840 | T-APM + **V-RPP-APM** (Perf Pass Ptcp — substantival object) |
| 9 | ἁγιάζει | ἁγιάζω | G37 | **V-PAI-3S** (Pres Act Ind 3s — apodosis-anticipating main verb) |

**Verbal frame:** a **first-class conditional** (εἰ + pres.ind. in protasis) — treated as a concrete, granted premise for argumentation (Wallace *GGBB* 690-694). Two subjects: τὸ αἷμα τράγων καὶ ταύρων and σποδὸς δαμάλεως, with concord resolving to a singular verb ἁγιάζει by the nearest-subject rule (BDF §135). The perf.pass.ptcp. κεκοινωμένους is a verbal-adjectival substantival — "those standing in the state of having been defiled" (see [greek/participle-perfect-passive-state](../greek/participle-perfect-passive-state.md)). The present tense of ῥαντίζουσα and ἁγιάζει is **gnomic/customary** — describing a habitual/characteristic Levitical action, not a specific past event. πρός + acc. (καθαρότητα) is a **goal/resultative** πρός ("with respect to / unto"), forecasting the εἰς-phrase in v.14 (εἰς τὸ λατρεύειν).

| 8 | τῷ Θεῷ | ὁ / θεός | G3588/G2316 | T-DSM + N-DSM (dat. of recipient) |
| 9 | καθαριεῖ | καθαρίζω | G2511 | **V-FAI-3S-ATT** (Fut Act Ind 3s, **Attic future** contracted) |
| 10 | τὴν συνείδησιν ἡμῶν | ὁ / συνείδησις / ἐγώ | G3588/G4893/G1473 | T-ASF + N-ASF + P-1GP |
| 11 | ἀπὸ νεκρῶν ἔργων | ἀπό / νεκρός / ἔργον | G575/G3498/G2041 | Prep + A-GPN + N-GPN (ablative — "from dead works") |
| 12 | εἰς τὸ λατρεύειν | εἰς / ὁ / λατρεύω | G1519/G3588/G3000 | Prep + T-ASN + **V-PAN** (articular infinitive — **purpose**) |
| 13 | Θεῷ ζῶντι | θεός / ζάω | G2316/G2198 | N-DSM + **V-PAP-DSM** (attributive pres.act.ptcp.) |
**Verbal frame:** the *a fortiori* (qal wa-ḥomer / *kal va-ḥomer*) axis lands here — πόσῳ μᾶλλον is a classical **dative of measure** used comparatively (BDF §195). The relative clause ὃς … προσήνεγκεν is an **aorist of past event** (the historical self-offering), syntactically subordinate but theologically load-bearing. διὰ Πνεύματος αἰωνίου is **instrumental** διά + gen.; the **anarthrous** Πνεύματος is debated (divine Spirit / Christ's own eternal spirit), but morphosyntactically the collocation αἰωνίου modifying πνεῦμα is a genitive-of-quality attributive adjective (cf. the adjacent αἰωνίαν λύτρωσιν in v.12 and αἰωνίου κληρονομίας in v.15 — the αἰών- cluster is a cohesion marker across the pericope). The main verb καθαριεῖ carries the **Attic-future** contraction (parser tag `V-FAI-3S-ATT`): the uncontracted *καθαρίσει would be expected; the Att. fut. is the older verbal-stem contraction surviving into Koine for liquid/nasal stems and for καθαρίζω (BDF §74). ἄμωμον is **predicative/double accusative** with προσφέρω ("offered himself *as* unblemished") — LXX sacrificial technical term (Lev 1:3; 3:1 etc.). The articular inf. εἰς τὸ λατρεύειν is a classic **εἰς τό + inf. of purpose** (Wallace *GGBB* 590-592; BDF §402-403) — tied to the purified συνείδησις, not to ἡμῶν independently.

| 10 | τὴν ἐπαγγελίαν | ὁ / ἐπαγγελία | G3588/G1860 | T-ASF + N-ASF (object of λάβωσιν) |
| 11 | λάβωσιν | λαμβάνω | G2983 | **V-2AAS-3P** (Aor Act Subj 3p — in ὅπως purpose clause) |
| 12 | οἱ κεκλημένοι | ὁ / καλέω | G3588/G2564 | T-NPM + **V-RPP-NPM** (Perf Pass Ptcp — substantival "the called ones") |
| 13 | τῆς αἰωνίου κληρονομίας | ὁ / αἰώνιος / κληρονομία | G3588/G166/G2817 | T-GSF + A-GSF + N-GSF (gen. of content for ἐπαγγελίαν) |
**Verbal frame:** διὰ τοῦτο (causal διά + accusative) marks an inferential hinge. The main clause is a copular predicate-nominative (διαθήκης καινῆς μεσίτης ἐστίν — "he is new-covenant's mediator"). ὅπως + aor.subj. (λάβωσιν) is a textbook **purpose clause** (Wallace *GGBB* 676). Embedded is a genitive absolute θανάτου γενομένου ("a death having occurred") — the aor.mid.ptcp. γενομένου is **temporal/causal antecedent** framing λάβωσιν. The perf.pass.ptcp. κεκλημένοι substantivizes ("the called-ones, standing in the state of having been called") — a durative result-state contrast with the aor.subj. λάβωσιν (the future act of reception). The word-play foundation διαθήκη (G1242) — meaning both "covenant" and (in Hellenistic legal usage) "last will / testament" — is prepared here and activated in vv.16-17. See [greek/participle-perfect-passive-state](../greek/participle-perfect-passive-state.md) and word study [G1242 διαθήκη](../../word-studies/G1242-diatheke.md), [G3316 μεσίτης](../../word-studies/G3316-mesites.md).

| 2 | θάνατον | θάνατος | G2288 | N-ASM (accusative subject of inf. φέρεσθαι) |
| 3 | ἀνάγκη | ἀνάγκη | G318 | N-NSF (predicate: impersonal "it is a necessity") |
| 4 | φέρεσθαι | φέρω | G5342 | **V-PPN** (Pres Pass Inf — "to be brought / adduced") |
| 5 | τοῦ διαθεμένου | ὁ / διατίθημι | G3588/G1303 | T-GSM + **V-2AMP-GSM** (Aor Mid Ptcp Gen Sg M — substantival "of the one who made it / testator") |
**Verbal frame:** impersonal ἀνάγκη + inf. construction — classical Greek idiom ("it is necessary for X to be brought"). The acc. θάνατον is **accusative-of-respect subject** of φέρεσθαι; the gen. τοῦ διαθεμένου is **genitive of possession** ("the death *of the testator*"). The shift from διαθήκη (covenant-cutting in LXX / Hebrews 9:15 etc.) to διαθέμενος (the one making a διαθήκη — more naturally glossed "testator") exploits Hellenistic semantic overlap. The parser tag `V-2AMP` (2nd aor.mid.ptcp.) of διατίθημι is critical: the middle voice matches both LXX covenant idiom (διατίθεσθαι διαθήκην = כָּרַת בְּרִית "cut a covenant," always LXX middle) and Hellenistic will-making. Grammar alone is genuinely ambiguous between the two senses.
### Heb 9:17

| 9 | ὁ διαθέμενος | ὁ / διατίθημι | G3588/G1303 | T-NSM + **V-2AMP-NSM** (Aor Mid Ptcp Nom Sg M — substantival) |
**Verbal frame:** gnomic presents (ἰσχύει, ζῇ) in a general legal/rhetorical maxim. The elided copula in the first colon (διαθήκη … βεβαία) is standard in sententious utterances. The **textual variant** μή ποτε vs. μήποτε (written solid) is morphophonemic only; sense identical. ἐπί + dat. νεκροῖς is **temporal/conditional ἐπί** ("over / on the basis of dead ones") — contrast the ἐπὶ + dat. of v.15 (temporal "under the first covenant"). The prefix συν- force is not present here; διαθέμενος is simple mid.ptcp. of διατίθημι. Note the structural parallel with v.16 (both end in τοῦ διαθεμένου / ὁ διαθέμενος as substantival anchor).

| 6 | ἐνκεκαίνισται | ἐγκαινίζω | G1457 | **V-RPI-3S** (**Perf Pass Ind** 3s — "has been inaugurated / stands in the state of having-been-inaugurated") |
**Verbal frame:** a one-verb summary-clause. ἡ πρώτη is substantival with elided head (διαθήκη implied from vv.15-17). The lone finite verb ἐνκεκαίνισται is a **perfect passive indicative** — highlighting the enduring inaugurated state, not merely the historical act. This is a **divine passive** candidate: agent unexpressed, Moses being the surface-level actor in v.19 but the ultimate agent being God who "enjoined" (ἐνετείλατο) the covenant (v.20). See [greek/divine-passive](../greek/divine-passive.md). The perfect tense here sets up the rhetorical *tertium comparationis* with Christ's ἐφάπαξ entry (v.12) and the once-for-all inauguration of the new covenant. Strong's G1457 is hapax-rare in NT (Heb 9:18; 10:20), both times of covenant-inauguration. Word study: [G1457 ἐγκαινίζω](../../word-studies/G1457-enkainizo.md).

| 12 | ἐράντισεν | ῥαντίζω | G4472 | **V-AAI-3S** (Aor Act Ind 3s — main verb) |
**Verbal frame:** this single sentence carries the heaviest participial stacking of the unit. Architecture: [**genitive absolute** λαληθείσης … παντὶ τῷ λαῷ] + [**antecedent aor.act.ptcp.** λαβών …] + [finite main verb ἐράντισεν]. Three chronologically sequential events — Moses speaks (gen. abs.), takes the blood-mixture (aor.ptcp.), then sprinkles (aor.ind.). The αὐτό intensive before τὸ βιβλίον is an **emphatic identifier** — "even the book itself." τε … καί coordinates the two objects with a slight formal register ("both … and"). ὑπὸ Μωϋσέως expresses the **agent of the passive participle** λαληθείσης (classical ὑπό + gen. of agent). Note the composite sprinkling mixture: blood + water + scarlet wool + hyssop — the same items appear in Lev 14:4-7 LXX (cleansing of lepers) and Num 19:6 LXX (red heifer), indicating a composite allusion rather than a pure Exod 24 citation.

| 7 | ὁ Θεός | ὁ / θεός | G3588/G2316 | T-NSM + N-NSM (delayed subject) |
**Verbal frame:** speech-introducing participle λέγων ([greek/participle-legon-discourse](../greek/participle-legon-discourse.md)). The cited formula Τοῦτο τὸ αἷμα τῆς διαθήκης is a **near-LXX-citation** of Exod 24:8 with Hebrews' characteristic adaptation (LXX has ἰδοὺ τὸ αἷμα τῆς διαθήκης ἧς διέθετο Κύριος; Hebrews substitutes ἐνετείλατο for LXX διέθετο, sharpening the "command" sense — and changes πρὸς ὑμᾶς from LXX πρὸς ὑμᾶς which matches). The relative ἧς is **gen. by attraction** to διαθήκης (Wallace *GGBB* 338-339; BDF §294) — expected case would be acc. (direct obj. of ἐνετείλατο, since one "enjoins *a covenant*"). This attraction is idiomatic LXX/NT style. The middle voice of ἐνετείλατο is lexicalized (G1781 is deponent middle in aor.).
### Heb 9:21

| 6 | ἐράντισεν | ῥαντίζω | G4472 | **V-AAI-3S** (repeated from v.19) |
**Verbal frame:** the καί … δέ correlation is a progressive/additive Greek idiom ("moreover / and also") — not a mere redundant coordination (BDF §447.9). τῷ αἵματι (dative) shifts from the διὰ + gen. pattern of vv.11-12 and the gen. object τὸ αἷμα of v.19 — here the **instrumental/associative dative** foregrounds the *means* of sprinkling. Single-word repetition ἐράντισεν (v.19 → v.21) structurally unifies the Moses-panel into a diptych: people-and-book sprinkled → tabernacle-and-vessels sprinkled. | 8 | ἄφεσις | ἄφεσις | G859 | N-NSF (subject) |
**Verbal frame:** two **gnomic-present** maxims. The first (πάντα καθαρίζεται) has a **neuter plural subject + singular verb** — a canonical classical/Koine concord shift (Wallace *GGBB* 399-400; BDF §133). The second is a structural aphorism: χωρὶς αἱματεκχυσίας οὐ γίνεται ἄφεσις — a formal **lit.-universal** ("apart from blood-shedding there-does-not-come-to-be forgiveness"). αἱματεκχυσία (G130) is a **hapax legomenon** in NT (not LXX either) — a Hebrews-coinage compound of αἷμα + ἐκχέω + -σία ("blood + pour-out + abstract-nominal"), suggesting the author has minted or borrowed a ritualistic technical term. γίνεται (mid/pass deponent) is semantically "comes to be / takes place" — the existential idiom. The σχεδόν modifier on πάντα is rhetorical hedging ("almost all things") — acknowledging the exceptions of Lev 5:11-13 (grain for the poor) and Num 16:46-48 (incense). ## 3. The Two Senses of διά + Genitive in vv.11-12
The parser tags διά identically in v.11 and v.12 (`PREP` + following gen.), but the syntactic/semantic function differs:
| Verse | Phrase | διά + gen. function | Paraphrase |
|-------|--------|--------------------|------------|
| 11 | διὰ τῆς μείζονος … σκηνῆς | **Locative / spatial-path** ("through, via, by way of") | "passing through the greater … tabernacle" |
| 12a | δι' αἵματος τράγων καὶ μόσχων | **Instrumental / means** ("by means of, with") | "by means of blood of goats and calves" |
| 12b | διὰ δὲ τοῦ ἰδίου αἵματος | **Instrumental / means** | "by means of his own blood" |
**Why the distinction matters grammatically:** διά + gen. has two separable uses in classical and Koine Greek (Wallace *GGBB* 368-369; BDF §223):
- **Spatial/agentive intermediate** — "through (a space or a mediator)"; stresses transit or the channel.
- **Instrumental** — "by means of"; stresses efficient cause.
Verse 11's σκηνῆς is a location (a structure), not a means, so the spatial reading dominates — matching the high-priest typology of walking through the sanctuary structure in the Yom Kippur rite (Lev 16). Verse 12's αἵματος is a substance applied as efficient means, matching the instrumental reading. The shift is not arbitrary: it marks the transition from the **venue of ministry** (where? — the "greater tabernacle") to the **instrument of ministry** (by what? — "his own blood"). Hebrews leverages the same morpheme διά twice for distinct syntactic-semantic loads, relying on head-noun semantics to disambiguate.

## 4. Grammatical Cohesion and Discourse Structure
### 4.1 Verbal Tense/Aspect Spine
| Verse | Finite / principal verbal form | Tense/Aspect | Discourse function |
|-------|-------------------------------|--------------|-------------------|
| 11 | παραγενόμενος (ptcp.) | Aor Mid Ptcp | Antecedent frame — "Christ having arrived" |
| 12 | εἰσῆλθεν | **Aor Act Ind** | **Main narrative act — once-for-all entry** |
| 12 | εὑράμενος | Aor Mid Ptcp | Coincident — "having obtained" |
| 13 | ἁγιάζει | Pres Act Ind (gnomic) | Customary premise |
| 14 | προσήνεγκεν | Aor Act Ind (in rel. clause) | Past-event qualifier |
| 14 | καθαριεῖ | **Fut Act Ind (Attic)** | **Main prospective claim — "shall purge"** |
| 15 | ἐστίν | Pres Act Ind (copula) | State / status — "he is mediator" |
| 15 | λάβωσιν | Aor Act Subj | Purpose — "that they may receive" |
| 16 | φέρεσθαι | Pres Pass Inf | Logical necessity |
| 17 | ἰσχύει, ζῇ | Pres Act Ind (gnomic) | Legal maxim |
| 18 | ἐνκεκαίνισται | **Perf Pass Ind** | **Enduring state — "has been inaugurated"** |
| 19 | ἐράντισεν | Aor Act Ind | Historical act (Moses) |
| 20 | ἐνετείλατο | Aor Mid Ind (rel. clause) | Past event (God's command) |
| 21 | ἐράντισεν | Aor Act Ind | Repeated historical act |
| 22 | καθαρίζεται, γίνεται | Pres Pass / M/P Ind | **Gnomic universal maxim** |
**Three load-bearing finite verbs** stand out for their aspectual marking:
1. **εἰσῆλθεν (v.12)** — historical aorist punctiliar of Christ's definitive entry.
2. **καθαριεῖ (v.14)** — Attic future; the *a fortiori* prospective claim about the present and ongoing purification of conscience. Against this backdrop, the gnomic presents of the surrounding verses are subordinate premises.
3. **ἐνκεκαίνισται (v.18)** — perfect passive for the enduring inaugurated state of the first covenant, matching the perfect-of-state function of the perfect tense in Hebrews generally (cf. Heb 7:23-25; 10:14).
### 4.2 Participial Stacking
Hebrews 9:11-22 is unusually dense in participles, as is Hebrews generally:
| v. | Participle | Form | Function |
|---|---|---|---|
| 11 | παραγενόμενος | Aor Mid (nom.) | circumstantial/antecedent |
| 11 | γενομένων | Aor Mid (attributive gen. pl.) | adnominal to ἀγαθῶν |
| 12 | εὑράμενος | Aor Mid (nom.) | attendant circumstance |
| 13 | ῥαντίζουσα | Pres Act (nom. fem.) | attributive to σποδός |
| 13 | κεκοινωμένους | Perf Pass (acc. pl. m.) | substantival |
| 14 | ζῶντι | Pres Act (dat. m.) | attributive to Θεῷ |
| 15 | γενομένου | Aor Mid (gen. m.) | **in genitive absolute** |
| 15 | κεκλημένοι | Perf Pass (nom. pl. m.) | substantival |
| 16 | διαθεμένου | Aor Mid (gen. m.) | substantival |
| 17 | διαθέμενος | Aor Mid (nom. m.) | substantival |
| 19 | λαληθείσης | Aor Pass (gen. f.) | **in genitive absolute** |
| 19 | λαβὼν | Aor Act (nom. m.) | antecedent circumstantial |
| 20 | λέγων | Pres Act (nom. m.) | speech-introducing |
**Observation:** Hebrews 9:15 and 9:19 both use **genitive absolutes** as temporal/logical frames. The density of **aorist middle** participles (vv.11, 12, 15, 16, 17) is a Hebrews stylistic marker — middle morphology is exploited for "for one's own account" nuance (cf. Wallace *GGBB* 414-430) or for lexically fossilized mid. deponents (γίνομαι, διατίθεμαι). **Perfect passive** participles (vv.13, 15) function substantivally, picking out classes of people defined by their enduring state (the defiled; the called).
### 4.3 Comparative Correlation (πόσῳ μᾶλλον, v.14)
The hinge of the pericope is the **πόσῳ μᾶλλον** (*a fortiori*) construction — a **dative of measure** (BDF §195-196). Grammatically: πόσῳ (Q-DSN, interrogative-intensive dat. sg. neut.) + μᾶλλον (comparative adv.) + implicit main clause. The construction presupposes that:
- A (protasis, v.13): "the blood of bulls and goats and ashes of a heifer sanctifies to purity of flesh" — an **admitted premise** in the εἰ (first-class) conditional.
- B (apodosis, v.14): "the blood of Christ will purge your conscience" — the **greater-scope claim**.
The grammatical logic is classical Semitic *qal wa-ḥomer* (light-and-heavy, "how much more") rendered into idiomatic Greek. The future καθαριεῖ in v.14 completes the dative-of-measure rhetorical move: if flesh-purity from the lesser blood is conceded, then conscience-purity from the greater blood follows *by the same measure or more*.
### 4.4 Covenant / Testament Wordplay (vv.15-17)
The grammatical anchor of vv.15-17 is διαθήκη (G1242) + διατίθημι (G1303). Morphology:
- **διαθήκη**: noun, feminine, regular -η declension ← root διά + τίθημι.
- **διατίθημι**: verb, root-final -η- aorist (second aorist middle διαθεμ-), all middle-voice in the relevant forms.
- **διαθέμενος / διαθεμένου**: aor.mid.ptcp. substantivized.
In LXX, διατίθημι + διαθήκη is the **stereotyped rendering of כָּרַת + בְּרִית** ("cut a covenant") — always middle voice (διαθέσθαι διαθήκην). In Hellenistic secular usage, διατίθημι alone (with no διαθήκη) means "arrange, dispose, make a will" — and the substantival participle ὁ διαθέμενος = "the testator." The grammatical ambiguity is genuine; the author exploits the polysemy, using covenant-language from v.15 and testament-logic in vv.16-17 under the cover of a single morpheme. Neither sense is imposed on the grammar; both fit. For the specific middle-voice nuance, cf. [greek/paired-middle-participles](../greek/paired-middle-participles.md).

## Construct Chain
- שְׁלֹשׁ מֵאוֹת — "three of hundreds" (= 300) — construct + absolute
## Key Grammatical Features
### 1. וְנִצְדַּק — Niphal Perfect 3ms of צדק
- **Stem:** Niphal (passive) — the subject receives the action
- **Tense:** Perfect with waw (וְ) in prophetic context = future certainty (prophetic perfect)
- **Significance:** The sanctuary is the RECIPIENT of vindication — passive voice. This is the ONLY Niphal occurrence of צדק in the entire OT.
- **KJV translates as "cleansed"** but the Hebrew root צדק means "to be righteous/just/vindicated" — not ritual cleansing. The ritual cleansing word would be טָהֵר (taher, H2891).
- **Word study:** [H6663-tsadaq.md](../../word-studies/H6663-tsadaq.md)
### 2. קֹדֶשׁ — Noun.ms.Abs (subject of passive verb)
- **As subject of Niphal verb:** The holy place is what receives vindication
- **Without article:** Lacks the definite article (הַ) yet functions as definite from context — the sanctuary already under discussion in Dan 8:11-13
### 3. עֶרֶב בֹּקֶר — Asyndetic noun pair
- **Asyndeton** (no conjunction between "evening" and "morning") suggests a compound time unit, not two separate things
- The pair functions as a single measurement: "evening-morning" = one unit
### 4. Clause 2 is Elliptical
- No explicit verb — the entire time phrase "unto evening-morning 2,300" serves as the temporal framework
- Clause 3 (WQtX) provides the main predication: what happens AFTER the 2,300

# Grammar Analysis: Leviticus 18:24–30 (The "Land Vomited Them Out" Paradigm)
## Overview
Lev 18:24–30 is the **paraenetic coda** (epilogue) to the Holiness-Code catalogue of sexual and cultic *ʿervôt* (Lev 18:6–23). It is the locus classicus for the **land-as-active-agent of covenant-judgment** topos in the Pentateuch: the land (הָאָרֶץ), not YHWH directly, is the grammatical subject that defiles itself (Qal), is visited (Qal), and **vomits out** (Hiphil) its inhabitants. The pericope is near-identical in architecture to its twin Lev 20:22–24, and it is presupposed by Ezra 9:10–12, Jer 2:7, Ps 106:38, and 2 Kgs 17:7–23.
The paragraph is built on **four load-bearing grammatical devices** that together encode a corporate-ecological theology of land-defilement:
1. **The קיא verb-pair** (vv. 25, 28) — a **Hiphil wayyiqtol / Hiphil yiqtol / Qal qatal** triad, morphologically distinguishing prior-nation action, causative expulsion, and the threatened repetition against Israel.
2. **The טמא concentric spiral** (vv. 24, 25, 27, 28, 30) — the same root in **five different stems and forms** (Hithpael impf., Niphal perf., Qal wayyiqtol, Piel infCon, Hithpael impf.) marking the contagion-logic of impurity.
3. **The corporate-ecological subject switch** — human-agent plural verbs (vv. 26–27: "you … they") yielding to a **feminine-singular land-agent** (vv. 25, 28), then to the **Niphal passive** (v. 29 — "souls shall be cut off") and the **plenary command** (v. 30 — "you shall keep").
4. **The prohibitive infinitive construct with בִּלְתִּי** (v. 30) — לְבִלְתִּי עֲשׂוֹת, the negative-purpose construction binding "keep my charge" to "not-doing" the abominations.
The rhetorical effect of the grammatical architecture is to *displace* the expected grammar of divine punishment onto the land itself: the covenant is not enforced by an external deity smiting the transgressor but by an animate-construed ecology that *expels the defiler* as a body rejects emetic poison. This is the grammatical-theological template for the Exile, read back into Israel's proleptic placement at Sinai.

**KJV:** Therefore shall ye keep mine ordinance, that ye commit not any one of these abominable customs, which were committed before you, and that ye defile not yourselves therein: I am the LORD your God.

## Key Grammatical Features
### 1. קיא "vomit" — The Rare Verb and its Morphological Triad (vv. 25, 28)
The root קיא occurs only **11 times** in the Hebrew Bible (9 verbal + 2 nominal; parser count via `--lemma "קיא"`), distributed across Lev 18:25, 28; Lev 20:22; Isa 19:14; 28:8; Jer 48:26; Jon 2:11; Job 20:15; Prov 23:8; 25:16. In the *verbal* domain it has only two active stems: **Qal** (intransitive "vomit") and **Hiphil** (causative / transitive "cause to vomit → spew out"). Lev 18 deploys all three morphological forms:
| Verse | Form | Parsing | Force |
|-------|------|---------|-------|
| 25b | וַתָּקִא | **Hiphil Wayq.3fs** | narrative-past: land *spewed out* prior nations |
| 28a | תָקִיא | **Hiphil Impf.3fs** | prospective-negative: land *might spew out* Israel |
| 28b | קָאָה | **Qal Perf.3fs** | comparative-past: land *vomited* (intrans.) the nation |
The **Hiphil** is morphologically unambiguous: pre-formative *tāqîʾ* (3fs) preserves the -î- vowel under Ia-Aleph / III-Aleph conditioning, and the wayyiqtol *wat-tāqīʾ* shows the expected shortened form. The Hiphil in Lev 18 is *transitive-causative*: the land is the grammatical subject and the displaced people are the direct object (אֶת־יֹשְׁבֶיהָ, אֶתְכֶם, אֶת־הַגּוֹי).
The **Qal qatal** in v. 28b (קָאָה) appears to be used *interchangeably* with the Hiphil of v. 25b (both 3fs; both take אֶת + object) — but BHSA parses it as Qal Perfect. This is the rare Qal-transitive of an emetic verb: the land "vomits" (Qal) with the displaced-nation as a secondary-accusative object, grammatically parallel to Prov 23:8 *qēʾaḵā ʾăšer-ʾāḵaltā təqîʾennâ* where the Hiphil also takes a direct object. The interchange underscores that the grammatical distinction here is **not causative-vs-simple** but rather **tense-aspect alternation** for stylistic variation between the two comparison-members (*was vomited / will be vomited* on the Hiphil future vs. *vomited* on the Qal past-comparative).
**Subject animacy:** הָאָרֶץ "the land" is feminine singular; the 3fs verb-forms (תָּקִא / תָקִיא / קָאָה / תִּטְמָא) bind the verbs to the land itself as the *agent*. This is the load-bearing grammatical choice — not "God cast them out" but "**the land vomited them out.**" YHWH's only 1cs verb in the pericope is וָאֶפְקֹד ("I reckoned," v. 25a) — a **juridical** act (setting the accounts) — but the *expulsion* itself is carried out by the land. The grammar encodes a *mediated agency*: YHWH reckons, the land expels.
**Semantic field:** The verb belongs to the semantic field of **involuntary bodily rejection** — the same verb is used for Jonah spewed out by the fish (Jon 2:11, Hiphil), the drunkard's vomit (Isa 19:14; 28:8; Jer 48:26; Prov 25:16; Job 20:15), and the rich man's ill-gotten-wealth-regurgitation (Job 20:15). The ecological metaphor thus construes the land as a *stomach* that cannot tolerate abominations and **involuntarily expels** them by physiological necessity, not by moral deliberation.
### 2. טמא "defile" — The Five-Stem Concentric Spiral (vv. 24, 25, 27, 28, 30)
The same root טמא appears **seven times** in this pericope in **five different morphological forms**, creating a concentric spiral that tracks the contagion-logic:
| Verse | Form | Parsing | Subject → Object | Voice-diathesis |
|-------|------|---------|------------------|-----------------|
| 24a | תִּטַּמְּאוּ | **Hithpael Impf.2mp** | Israel → themselves | **Reflexive-self-defiling** |
| 24b | נִטְמְאוּ | **Niphal Perf.3p** | nations (past) | **Passive-have-been-defiled** |
| 25a | תִּטְמָא | **Qal Wayq.3fs** | land (past-narrative) | **Stative/ingressive "became unclean"** |
| 27b | תִּטְמָא | **Qal Wayq.3fs** | land (past-narrative, reprise) | **Stative/ingressive** |
| 28a | טַמַּאֲכֶם | **Piel InfCon.+2mp** | Israel → land (prospective) | **Piel transitive-causative: "your defiling (it)"** |
| 30a | תִטַּמְּאוּ | **Hithpael Impf.2mp** | Israel → themselves | **Reflexive-self-defiling** (closure) |
Note on the count: the table lists six finite occurrences plus one infinitive — seven surface occurrences of the root across five morphological paradigms (Hithpael impf., Niphal perf., Qal wayq., Piel infCon, Hithpael impf. closure).
**What the stem-alternation encodes:**
- **Hithpael** (vv. 24a, 30a) = *self-defilement* — the agent and the patient are the same (Israel). Frame-sets the *vetitive* (v. 24) and *concluding command* (v. 30).
- **Niphal** (v. 24b) = *became-defiled* (passive or middle) — the prior nations are the subject; the abominations did the defiling *to* them. The Niphal here is not merely passive but *medio-passive*: the nations suffered defilement as the natural consequence of their abominations.
- **Qal** (vv. 25a, 27b) = *stative-ingressive* of the land itself — intransitive, "it became unclean" / "it entered a state of uncleanness." The Qal stem for the land (vs. the Hithpael for people, and the Piel for action upon the land) grammatically constructs the land as **patient** when acted on and **agent** (through the קיא Hiphil) when reacting.
- **Piel** (v. 28a, InfCon *ṭammaʾăḵem* "your defiling") = *transitive-causative* — Israel's action (inf + 2mp suff as subject) *upon* the land (אֹתָהּ as direct object). This is the middle-step: *you* (Piel) make *it* (land) unclean, so *it* (Qal) becomes unclean, so *it* (Hiphil of קיא) expels *you*.
**The grammatical chain as theological argument:**
This is a **grammatical sorites** — the stem-progression itself carries the theological argument that self-defilement necessarily propagates to land-defilement and necessarily produces land-expulsion. The root טמא is the *medium* of the contagion; the stems are the *stages* of its propagation.
**Cross-references:** See [H2931-tame](../../word-studies/H2931-tame.md) for the lexical data on this root and [stem-niphal](../hebrew/stem-niphal.md) for the Niphal-passive dynamics in v. 24b.
### 3. Corporate–Ecological Agency: The Feminine-Singular Land as Subject (vv. 25, 27, 28)
הָאָרֶץ is morphologically **feminine singular** (Noun.s.Abs, governed by 3fs verb-concord). In Lev 18:24–30 it appears **five times** as a grammatical subject or object of animate-level action:
1. v. 25a — subject of Qal wayyiqtol (*wattiṭmāʾ*): "it became defiled"
2. v. 25b — subject of Hiphil wayyiqtol (*wattāqiʾ*): "it vomited out"
3. v. 27b — subject of Qal wayyiqtol (*wattiṭmāʾ*): "it became defiled" (reprise)
4. v. 28a — subject of Hiphil yiqtol (*tāqîʾ*): "it shall vomit out"
5. v. 28b — subject of Qal qatal (*qāʾâ*): "it vomited" + obj marker אֹתָהּ referring back to it as defiled patient
The land is thus construed both as **patient of defilement** (by the inhabitants' abominations) and as **agent of expulsion** (of those same inhabitants). This grammatical double-construal is the formal machinery of a **corporate-ecological** juridical subject: the land is a *party to the covenant* who can suffer injury (defilement) and can execute sanction (vomiting).
**The land–inhabitants concord:** In v. 25 הָאָרֶץ (3fs) governs the verb *wattāqiʾ* (3fs) with *yōšəḇeyhā* "her inhabitants" as object. The 3fs pronominal suffix on יֹשְׁבֶיהָ binds the land to its population possessively — they are *hers*, and yet she vomits them. This is the grammar of a body rejecting its own tissue.
See [corporate-solidarity](../hebrew/corporate-solidarity.md) for the collective-singular pattern operating in parallel with גּוֹי (v. 28b) and נְפָשׁוֹת (v. 29). The land-agent pattern here is the **ecological extension** of the corporate-solidarity pattern — a land, like a people, is a single juridical subject.
### 4. The Wayyiqtol "Narrative" Domain Embedded in "Discourse" (vv. 25, 27)
The parser tags clauses by **domain: Q (quotation/discourse)** or **N (narrative)**. The whole of Lev 18:24–30 is YHWH's direct discourse to Israel (domain Q throughout). But **vv. 25a, 25b, 25c and 27c are tagged domain N** — narrative-domain clauses embedded within the divine discourse. This is because the three clauses of v. 25 and the third clause of v. 27 are **wayyiqtol chains** (`WayX` / `Way0`) — and wayyiqtol is a narrative-domain past form.
The grammatical effect is **proleptic-retrospective narration**: YHWH, while commanding Israel in the Sinai present, narrates the *past-and-future* expulsion of the Canaanite nations as if it were a completed past event. The wayyiqtol chain here is a *divine retrospective* that relativises the prospective audience's situation — *from YHWH's point of view the Canaanites are already vomited out, and Israel's identical fate under identical conditions is already scripted*.
The shift back to domain Q for v. 26 (weqatal command) marks the return from divine retrospective to direct paraenetic address; the shift forward to domain Q for v. 28 (yiqtol-prospective) marks the projection of the same script onto Israel's future.
### 5. לְבִלְתִּי עֲשׂוֹת — The Negative Infinitive-of-Purpose (v. 30)
The InfC clause *ləḇiltî ʿăśôṯ* in v. 30 is the Hebrew **negative infinitive-of-purpose** construction — a particle-governed negative-purpose prepositional phrase built from:
1. **לְ** — purpose-marking preposition (lamed of purpose)
2. **בִּלְתִּי** — an **archaic negator particle** (H1115; etymologically from בלה "waste/cease"), functioning as a "not"-marker only in construct-state (hence parser: `Noun.s.Cst`); it is *never* used as a free-standing adverb, only in bound construction with לְ or עַד
3. **עֲשׂוֹת** — Qal **Infinitive Construct** of עשׂה, serving as a verbal-noun object of the preposition
The full construction לְבִלְתִּי + InfCon is the **standard Biblical-Hebrew idiom for "in order not to do X"** (GKC §114s; Joüon-Muraoka §124e, §160i). It is used extensively in legal-paraenetic contexts — cf. Deut 17:20; 20:18; Jer 7:6; 17:24; 23:14; 27:18; Jer 18:10 (in the conditional-prophecy diptych, see [jer-18-7-10](jer-18-7-10.md) §6).
**The clause hierarchy in v. 30:**
The positive command *ušəmartem* (keep my charge) is **teleologically bound** to the negative infinitive *ləḇiltî ʿăśôṯ* (so as not to do): the keeping is *for the purpose of* the not-doing. The grammar encodes an asymmetric command structure — the "keep" is the *means*, the "not-do" is the *end*. Apotropaic legal observance (keeping חוק and משפט) is *prophylactic against abomination*.
**The triple-negative closure:** v. 30 stacks three negations:
1. *ləḇiltî ʿăśôṯ* — negative-purpose infinitive
2. *wə-lōʾ tiṭṭammǝʾû* — negative yiqtol (parallel to the opening negative yiqtol of v. 24)
3. The implicit negation of "I am YHWH your God" (i.e., *no other gods, no other statutes*)
This creates a **grammatical inclusio** with v. 24 (*ʾal-tiṭṭammǝʾû*): the paragraph opens with a vetitive *ʾal* + Hithpael impf. ("do not defile yourselves") and closes with a parallel *wə-lōʾ* + Hithpael impf. ("and you shall not defile yourselves"). The root טמא and the Hithpael stem both recur at the frame-positions, tying the whole paragraph together morphologically.
### 6. וְנִכְרְתוּ הַנְּפָשׁוֹת — The Karet Formula (v. 29)
V. 29 deploys the standard **karet-formula** of the Holiness Code: a third-person conditional-casuistic structure ("whoever does X, the soul[s] shall be cut off from their people") built on:
1. **CPen** (casus pendens): *kî kol* — the topicalised protasis-head
2. **xYq0** (asher + yiqtol): *ʾăšer yaʿăśeh* — the indefinite offender "whoever shall do"
3. **WQtX** (weqatal + subj): *wə-niḵrəṯû han-nəp̄āšôṯ* — the apodosis-sanction
4. Ptcp (rel): *hā-ʿōśōṯ* — "the doing-ones" (substantival, limits the subject)
5. *mi-qereḇ ʿammām* — "from among their people"
**Morphology:** The apodosis-verb *wə-niḵrəṯû* is **Niphal perfect 3p with conjunctive/consecutive waw** — a **weqatal** ("and shall be cut off"). The Niphal stem is here a **divine-passive**: YHWH is the implied agent of the cutting-off, but the surface grammar hides the agent (contrast the explicit 1cs *wə-hiḵrattî* "I will cut off" Hiphil of Lev 20:3, 5, 6). The Niphal *niḵrat* in karet-formulas is formulaic: it occurs 17× in the Pentateuch alone, always with נֶפֶשׁ as subject and מִקֶּרֶב עַמָּהּ / עַמָּיו / בְּנֵי עַמָּיו as source-complement.
**The number-mismatch:** *kol ʾăšer yaʿăśeh* is 3ms (singular indefinite offender), but *wə-niḵrəṯû han-nəp̄āšôṯ* is 3p (plural "souls"). The apodosis shifts to **plural-distributive** construal: the individual offender's *nepeš* is counted among a class of *nəp̄āšôṯ* (plural) who have likewise offended. This is a grammatical instance of the distributive construal — a singular violator is adjudicated as one of a class, and the sanction applies to the class.
**Cross-reference:** [H3772-karath](../../word-studies/H3772-karath.md) for the full lexical-semantic dossier on the karet sanction and its Niphal/Hiphil alternation.
### 7. תּוֹעֵבֹת "abominations" — The Semantic Anchor (vv. 26, 27, 29, 30)
The noun תּוֹעֵבָה (fem. sg., plural תּוֹעֵבֹת) appears **four times** in the paragraph (vv. 26, 27, 29, 30). It is the **technical term** for cultic-sexual-ethical violations that evoke divine revulsion. Its four occurrences are **categorially coordinated** with the paragraph's four legal moments:
| Verse | Phrase | Function |
|-------|--------|----------|
| 26 | מִכֹּל הַתּוֹעֵבֹת הָאֵלֶּה | **Prohibition's object** (neg yiqtol) |
| 27 | אֶת כָּל הַתּוֹעֵבֹת הָאֵל | **Causal-ground's object** (qatal, prior nations) |
| 29 | מִכֹּל הַתּוֹעֵבוֹת הָאֵלֶּה | **Karet's trigger** (yiqtol) |
| 30 | מֵחֻקּוֹת הַתּוֹעֵבֹת | **Infinitive-of-purpose's object** (negative inf.) |
The four occurrences tie the four grammatical moments (prohibition / ground / sanction / closing command) into a single tightly-woven paraenetic fabric. The plural *tôʿēḇōṯ* collectivises the catalogue of vv. 6–23: each specific *ʿervâ* is now enumerated as one instance of the generic category *tôʿēḇâ*.
**The construct chain in v. 30** (*ḥuqqôṯ hat-tôʿēḇōṯ*, "statutes of the abominations") is morphologically striking: *ḥuqqôṯ* is **fem. pl. Construct**, bound to the absolute *hat-tôʿēḇōṯ* (fem. pl. Absolute). The construct relation forms an **ironic construct** — "statutes of [= belonging to / prescribed by] abominations" — inverting the positive *ḥuqqōṯay* of v. 26 ("my statutes"). Israel must keep *my statutes* (v. 26, 30a) lest it observe *the abominations' statutes* (v. 30b): two competing *ḥuqqah*-codes, and Israel must choose one. This is **grammatical polemic** — the very word חֻקָּה is contested between YHWH and the prior-nations' cult-system.
**Cross-reference:** [H8441-towebah](../../word-studies/H8441-towebah.md) for the full lexical-theological profile of *tôʿēḇâ*.
### 8. וָאֶפְקֹד — The Divine Reckoning (v. 25a)
The one 1cs verb in the pericope is *wā-ʾep̄qōḏ* "**and I visited/reckoned**" (Qal wayyiqtol of פקד) — embedded between the two 3fs land-verbs of v. 25 (*wat-tiṭmāʾ* … *wāʾep̄qōḏ* … *wat-tāqiʾ*). The placement is theologically load-bearing:
- **v. 25a:** *wattiṭmāʾ hā-ʾāreṣ* — "and the land became defiled" (3fs subject)
- **v. 25a-mid:** *wāʾep̄qōḏ ʿăwōnâh ʿāleyhā* — "and **I** reckoned its iniquity upon it" (1cs subject, YHWH)
- **v. 25b:** *wat-tāqiʾ hā-ʾāreṣ ʾeṯ-yōšəḇeyhā* — "and the land vomited out her inhabitants" (3fs subject)
The 1cs verb is **sandwiched** between the two 3fs verbs of the land. This grammatical positioning encodes the theological structure: the land's defilement happens, then YHWH **judicially assigns** the iniquity (פקד = "muster / reckon / visit" in judicial sense), and then the land *executes* the expulsion. YHWH is **not** the expeller; YHWH is the **reckoner**. The expulsion is the land's *emetic response* to the reckoned-iniquity. This grammatical division of labour between 1cs (reckon) and 3fs (expel) keeps YHWH juridically responsible but ecologically mediated.
**עָלֶיהָ** "upon it" is a 3fs suffix referring back to הָאָרֶץ: the iniquity is reckoned **upon the land** (not upon the inhabitants). This is striking — the *land* bears the iniquity as a deposit (cf. Num 5:31 for *nāśāʾ ʿāwōn* as bearing guilt). The land, in effect, is *guilt-credited* on behalf of its inhabitants, and then discharges the credit by the emetic response.
### 9. The Holiness-Code Signature: Native-and-Sojourner (v. 26)
V. 26b explicitly extends the command to *hā-ʾezrāḥ wə-hag-gēr hag-gār bəṯôḵəḵem* "the native and the sojourner who sojourns in your midst." This is a **Holiness-Code signature formula** (cf. Lev 16:29; 17:15; 18:26; 19:34; 24:16, 22; Num 15:16, 29). The command is *territorially* (not ethnically) scoped: anyone dwelling *in the land* is bound by the *ḥuqqôṯ / mišpāṭîm* because the *land* is the one that reacts to defilement, and the land does not distinguish native from foreigner. The grammatical universalisation of the subject (*ʾezrāḥ + gēr*) confirms the ecological-not-ethnic logic of the expulsion-sanction.
The participial *hag-gār* (Qal Ptcp.ms.Abs) functions as a **relative-attributive substantive** ("the-one-who-sojourns"), specifying the gēr as the dwelling-gēr (not the transient visitor). The root play *gēr … gār* (noun + cognate participle) is stylistic but carries the force: "the resident-alien who [actually] resides."
### 10. Symmetric Inclusio: vv. 24 and 30
The paragraph is framed by two structurally symmetric verses:
| Feature | v. 24 (opening) | v. 30 (closing) |
|---------|-----------------|------------------|
| Negative form | **אַל**-vetitive + Hithpael impf. | **לֹא**-vetitive + Hithpael impf. (v. 30b) |
| Root | טמא Hithpael 2mp | טמא Hithpael 2mp |
| Ground | כִּי + Niphal perf. (prior nations defiled) | אֲשֶׁר + Niphal perf. (prior abominations done) |
| Prior-nation reference | הַגֹּויִם | לִפְנֵיכֶם |
| Positive counterpart | — | וּשְׁמַרְתֶּם אֶת־מִשְׁמַרְתִּי (v. 30a) |
| Divine self-reference | אֲנִי מְשַׁלֵּחַ (Piel Ptcp — "I am expelling") | אֲנִי יְהוָה אֱלֹהֵיכֶם (nominal formula) |
The inclusio's rhetorical point: the opening gives the *ground* (the nations already defiled), the closing gives the *remedy* (keep the charge, do not defile yourselves). The root טמא Hithpael 2mp is the **exact lexical-morphological frame** for the whole paragraph — you do not defile yourselves (v. 24) precisely because you shall not defile yourselves (v. 30). The indicative-vetitive becomes the prospective-prohibition, and the paragraph's entire argument is compressed into the semantic equivalence of its frames.
## The Paradigm as a Whole: Grammatical Architecture of Ecological Expulsion
Reading the seven verses as a single grammatical unit, the paradigm exhibits a **chiastic-ecological** architecture:
- **A//A'** = Hithpael 2mp *ṭmʾ* frame-inclusio
- **B//B'** = land-agent Qal/Hiphil *ṭmʾ/qyʾ* sequence (narrative past vs. yiqtol prospective)
- **C//C'** = שׁמר-חוק-משפט command + ground
- **D** = karet-sanction as climactic individual-level judgment, nested inside the corporate-ecological judgment of B'
The grammatical architecture enforces the theological claim that corporate/ecological and individual judgments are *two parallel tracks* with grammatically distinct mechanisms: **the land vomits nations** (corporate, 3fs, Hiphil of קיא) while **YHWH cuts off persons** (individual, Niphal-divine-passive of כרת). The Holiness Code needs both mechanisms because covenant-fidelity is both a corporate and an individual matter.
## Comparative Reference: Lev 20:22–24 (Sibling Passage)
The sibling pericope Lev 20:22–24 recycles the identical grammatical frame:
- Lev 20:22 — *ûšəmartem ʾeṯ kol ḥuqqōṯay wə-ʾeṯ kol mišpāṭay wa-ʿăśîṯem ʾōṯām wə-lōʾ ṯāqîʾ ʾeṯḵem hā-ʾāreṣ* ("keep … and do not defile it, that the land vomit you not out"). The Hiphil *tāqîʾ* is again 3fs with land-subject and 2mp object.
- Lev 20:23 — adds a distinctive 1cs *wā-ʾāqûṣ bām* ("and I abhorred them"), a Qal of קוץ that parenthetically intrudes YHWH's emotional response into the ecological-expulsion schema.
The two passages together establish the **canonical Holiness-Code rule**: land-defilement by abomination → land-expulsion of the defiler. Lev 18:24–30 is the *argumentative* version (with the conditional prospective extension), Lev 20:22–24 is the *summary* version. Both use the קיא Hiphil 3fs with land-subject.

## Summary
Lev 18:24–30 encodes the **land-vomiting paradigm** through four load-bearing grammatical devices: (1) the rare קיא verb in Qal/Hiphil with **feminine-singular land-subject** mediating divine judgment as an ecological-emetic response; (2) the טמא root in **five different morphological stems** tracing a grammatical sorites from self-defilement (Hithpael) through transitive-defilement (Piel) to land-defilement (Qal) to expulsion (Hiphil of קיא); (3) the **corporate-ecological agency** of the land as both patient and agent within a narrative-domain wayyiqtol chain embedded in the divine discourse; and (4) the **לְבִלְתִּי + Infinitive Construct** negative-purpose construction binding "keep my charge" teleologically to "not-do the abominations." The karet formula of v. 29 (Niphal-divine-passive of כרת) operates as an individual-level counterpart to the corporate land-expulsion, together establishing the Holiness Code's two-track sanction system. The paragraph is framed by a Hithpael 2mp inclusio on טמא (v. 24 / v. 30) that binds the whole as a unified exhortation: the holiness of the people is the condition of the land's tolerance of them, and defilement is not merely moral failure but a physiological-ecological emetic trigger that the land cannot but execute.

# Hiphil Stem (Hebrew)
## Definition
The **Hiphil** (הִפְעִיל) is the H-stem of the Hebrew verb — the primary **causative** stem. It is formed by prefixing he (ה) to the root and adds an external causer to the Qal action: what Qal says "happens," Hiphil says "is made to happen." It is the workhorse stem for nearly every Hebrew conquest, creation, and covenant-transfer verb ("smite," "devote," "destroy," "dispossess," "bring," "raise up," "beget").
Core functions:
1. **Causative-factitive** — subject causes the object to do or become the Qal action ("cause to ride," "raise up," "bring [= cause to come]")
2. **Productive / internal causative** — subject produces or enters a state ("bring forth," "multiply," "rain down")
3. **Declarative / estimative** — subject declares or treats the object as X ("pronounce righteous," "declare guilty")
4. **Denominative** — derives verbs from nouns ("give ear [listen]," "give rain," "yield fruit")
For the yiqtol conjugation specifically, see [hiphil-imperfect.md](hiphil-imperfect.md).
## Form Recognition
### Morphological markers
- **Perfect:** *hiqṭîl* (הִקְטִיל) — he-prefix with hiriq, long *î* theme vowel: הִכָּה "he smote," הֶחֱרִים "he devoted," הֶאֱבִיד "he destroyed"

## Functions with Examples
### 1. Causative-factitive (primary function)
The subject causes the object to perform the Qal action. An external agent enters the verbal frame.
| Reference | Hebrew | Parsing | KJV |
|-----------|--------|---------|-----|
| Gen 14:15 | וַיַּכֵּם | Hiphil.Wayq.3ms+3mp of נכה | "and smote them" (*caused the stroke to fall on them*) |
| Gen 19:11 | הִכּוּ | Hiphil.Perf.3p of נכה | "they smote the men... with blindness" |
| Exo 2:12 | וַיַּךְ | Hiphil.Wayq.3ms of נכה | "and slew [smote] the Egyptian" |
| Gen 2:19 | וַיָּבֵא | Hiphil.Wayq.3ms of בוא | "and brought them" (*caused them to come*) |
| Gen 41:43 | וַיַּרְכֵּב | Hiphil.Wayq.3ms of רכב | "he made him to ride" |
| Deut 18:15 | יָקִים | Hiphil.Impf.3ms of קום | "the LORD... shall raise up [a prophet]" |
### 2. Conquest verbs — the causative grammar of Joshua/Deuteronomy
Nearly every divine-war verb in the conquest narratives is Hiphil. The stem itself encodes that YHWH "causes the destruction" through Israel as the instrumental agent.
| Reference | Hebrew | Parsing | KJV | Root meaning (Qal) |
|-----------|--------|---------|-----|--------------------|
| Deut 7:2 | וְהִכִּיתָם / הַחֲרֵם תַּחֲרִים | Hiphil.Perf.2ms+3mp of נכה; Hiphil.InfAbs + Hiphil.Impf.2ms of חרם | "thou shalt smite them... utterly destroy [devote] them" | — / חרם Hiphil gloss = "consecrate [to destruction], ban" |
| Deut 9:3 | יַשְׁמִידֵם... וְהֹורַשְׁתָּם | Hiphil.Impf.3ms+3mp of שׁמד; Hiphil.Perf.2ms+3mp of ירשׁ | "he shall destroy them... thou shalt drive them out" | שׁמד Qal unattested; ירשׁ Qal = "possess" |
| Jos 10:40 | הֶחֱרִים | Hiphil.Perf.3ms of חרם | "utterly destroyed all that breathed" | — |
| Jos 11:12 | וַיַּכֵּם... הֶחֱרִים | Hiphil.Wayq+Perf of נכה/חרם | "smote them... utterly destroyed them" | — |
| Deut 11:23 | וְהוֹרִישׁ | Hiphil.Perf.3ms of ירשׁ | "the LORD drive out all these nations" | ירשׁ Qal = "take possession" |
| Exo 34:24 | אוֹרִישׁ | Hiphil.Impf.1s of ירשׁ | "I will cast out the nations" | same — Hiphil inverts to "dispossess" |
| 1 Sam 15:3 | וְהַחֲרַמְתֶּם | Hiphil.Perf.2mp+cons of חרם | "utterly destroy all that they have" | — |
**Grammatical point.** The Qal of ירשׁ means "to take possession, inherit"; the Hiphil reverses the frame — "to cause [them] to lose possession" = "dispossess, drive out." This is a textbook Hiphil inversion: *yāraš* "possess" → *hôrîš* "cause-not-to-possess." The same pattern appears with ילד Qal "be born" → Hiphil "beget." The conquest verbs require the Hiphil precisely because the action is performed *on* someone by an external causer.
### 3. Productive / internal causative
The subject produces or enters a state; often renders as an intransitive English verb.
| Reference | Hebrew | Parsing | KJV |
|-----------|--------|---------|-----|
| Gen 1:11 | תַּדְשֵׁא | Hiphil.Impf.3fs of דשׁא | "let the earth bring forth grass" |
| Gen 1:12 | תּוֹצֵא | Hiphil.Wayq.3fs of יצא | "the earth brought forth" (caused-to-go-out) |
| Gen 2:5 | הִמְטִיר | Hiphil.Perf.3ms of מטר | "the LORD God had... caused it to rain" |
| Gen 3:16 | אַרְבֶּה | Hiphil.Impf.1s of רבה | "I will greatly multiply thy sorrow" |
| Gen 1:15, 17 | הָאִיר | Hiphil.InfCon of אור | "to give light" (cause to be light) |
### 4. Declarative / estimative
The subject does not perform the action but pronounces the object to possess the quality.
| Reference | Hebrew | Parsing | KJV |
|-----------|--------|---------|-----|
| 1 Kgs 8:32 | הַרְשִׁיעַ / הַצְדִּיק | Hiphil.InfCon of רשׁע / צדק | "condemning... justifying" (*declare* guilty / righteous) |
| Gen 3:11 | הִגִּיד | Hiphil.Perf.3ms of נגד | "[who] told thee" (caused [it] to be set before) |
### 5. Denominative (verb from noun)
| Reference | Hebrew | Parsing | Gloss |
|-----------|--------|---------|-----|
| Gen 4:23 | הַאְזֵנָּה | Hiphil.Impv.2fp of אזן | "give ear!" (from אֹזֶן "ear") |
| Gen 2:5 | הִמְטִיר | Hiphil.Perf.3ms of מטר | "send rain" (from מָטָר "rain") |
## Contrast with Qal and Piel
The three stems most often confused are Qal (base), Piel (intensive/factitive), and Hiphil (causative). Only Qal is semantically "basic"; Piel and Hiphil both involve second-party effects but along different axes.
| Stem | Semantic axis | Typical gloss | Example root | Qal → Stem |
|------|---------------|---------------|--------------|------------|
| **Qal** | Basic action, subject performs | "do X" | קום | *qām* "he arose" |
| **Piel** | Factitive — brings about a **state** or result; intensifies result; plural/iterative action | "make X into Y" | קדשׁ | Qal "be holy" → Piel *qiddēš* "consecrate, sanctify" |
| **Hiphil** | Causative — introduces an external **causer** of the action | "cause to do X" | קום | Qal "arise" → Hiphil *hēqîm* "raise up, erect" |
### Worked contrasts
| Root | Qal | Piel | Hiphil |
|------|-----|------|--------|
| בוא | *bāʾ* "he came" | (rare) | *hēbîʾ* "he brought" (caused to come) |
| קום | *qām* "he arose / stood" | *qiyyēm* "he confirmed, fulfilled" (bring to realization) | *hēqîm* "he raised up, erected" |
| ילד | *yālad* "she bore" | *yillēd* "she assisted in birth [midwife]" | *hôlîd* "he begat, sired" |
| שׁוב | *šāb* "he returned" | *šiwwēb* "he brought back [poetic]" | *hēšîb* "he restored, brought back" |
| מלא | *mālēʾ* "he was full" | *millēʾ* "he filled [it]" (make full) | *himlîʾ* "he caused [it] to be full" |
| ראה | *rāʾāh* "he saw" | — | *herʾāh* "he showed" (caused to see) |
| גדל | *gādal* "he grew great" | *giddēl* "he raised [a child], brought up" (make-great) | *higdîl* "he magnified, made great" |
| ידע | *yādaʿ* "he knew" | — | *hôdîaʿ* "he made known, informed" |
**The Piel/Hiphil overlap.** Piel and Hiphil both introduce causation, but Piel focuses on **bringing about a state in the object** (result-oriented: "make full," "make holy," "make great"), while Hiphil focuses on **causing the object to perform the Qal action** (process-oriented: "cause to come," "cause to arise"). With verbs of *becoming* both are possible and the language often uses only one. With verbs of *action* (come, go, ride, eat, see, know) Hiphil is the standard causative and Piel is unattested or rare.
## Contrast with Other Stems
| Stem | Function | Example | Link |
|------|----------|---------|------|
| **Qal** | Basic G-stem | קָם "he arose" | — |
| **Niphal** | Simple passive / reflexive | נִכְרַת "he was cut off" | [stem-niphal.md](stem-niphal.md) |
| **Piel** | Factitive / intensive / resultative | קִדֵּשׁ "he consecrated" | — |
| **Pual** | Passive of Piel | קֻדַּשׁ "he was consecrated" | — |
| **Hiphil** | Active causative | הֵקִים "he raised up" | *(this entry)* |
| **Hophal** | Passive of Hiphil ("be caused to do") | הוּקַם "he was raised up" | — |
| **Hithpael** | Reflexive / iterative | הִתְקַדֵּשׁ "he sanctified himself" | — |
Hiphil and Hophal form a voice pair: Hiphil is the active causative, Hophal the passive of the same ("be made to arise," "be brought"). Niphal and Pual handle other passive relations (simple and intensive respectively).
## Common Hiphil Verbs in Conquest / Warfare Vocabulary
| Verb root | Qal meaning | Hiphil meaning | Representative reference |
|-----------|-------------|----------------|--------------------------|
| נכה (nakah) | *(Qal rare)* | **smite, strike, kill** (*hikkāh*) | Deut 7:2; Jos 11:12; 1 Sam 15:3 |
| חרם (charam) | *(denom. of חֵרֶם)* | **devote to destruction, utterly destroy** (*heḥĕrîm*) | Deut 7:2; Jos 10:40; 1 Sam 15:3 |
| שׁמד (shamad) | *(unattested)* | **destroy, exterminate** (*hišmîd*) | Deut 9:3 |
| אבד (avad) | "perish" | **destroy, cause to perish** (*heʾĕbîd*) | Deut 11:4; 2 Kgs 21:3 |
| ירשׁ (yarash) | "possess, inherit" | **dispossess, drive out** (*hôrîš*) | Deut 11:23; Exo 34:24 |
| נוס (nus) → נוּס | "flee" | *hēnîs* "put to flight" (rare) | Judg 20:32 |
| גרשׁ (garash) | "drive out" (Piel primarily) | — | *(Piel carries this sense)* |
| בוא (bo) | "come" | **bring [in]** | Deut 7:1; Jos 23:9 |
| קום (qum) | "arise" | **raise up** (a prophet, king, enemy) | Deut 18:15; 1 Kgs 14:10 |
| שׁוב (shub) | "return" | **bring back, restore** | 1 Kgs 13:6 |
**Other common Hiphils (non-warfare).** בדל (Hiphil only) "separate, divide" (Gen 1:4, 7); זרע "sow" (Gen 1:11 Hiphil "yield seed"); ילד "beget" (Hiphil); נגד "tell, declare" (Hiphil only); ידע "make known" (Hiphil); אור "give light" (Hiphil); מטר "send rain" (Hiphil, Gen 2:5); רבה "multiply" (Hiphil Gen 3:16, 22:17).
## Why conquest narratives are saturated with Hiphils
The theological point embedded in the grammar: Joshua and Deuteronomy rarely use Qal verbs for the destruction of the Canaanites. The verbs are almost uniformly Hiphil. This is not stylistic — the Hiphil stem *requires* an external causer. In Deut 7:2 the surface subject is "you" (Israel), but the grammar marks Israel as the instrumental agent of a causation whose ultimate source is named in the preceding clause: "when the LORD thy God shall deliver them before thee." Similarly Deut 9:3 names YHWH as the one who *yašmîdēm* "will destroy them"; Israel's *wəhôraštām* "thou shalt dispossess them" is the Hiphil executed through the human instrument. The conquest is grammatically a **Hiphil event**: YHWH is the causer, Israel the means.
