Question¶
When Paul calls Christ the hilasterion (Rom 3:25) and John calls him the hilasmos (1 John 2:2, 4:10), are they describing propitiation (turning away God's wrath), expiation (removing sin's defilement), or both — and what does the Hebrew kapporeth background require?

The Wrath-Context Arc (Romans 1-5)¶

Explicit sequence: justified BY blood (past) → saved FROM wrath (future) → reconciled by death → saved by life → received the atonement
The Kapporeth Passages¶
Exodus 25:17-22 — The mercy seat described¶
25:17 — And thou shalt make a mercy seat [of] pure gold: two cubits and a half [shall be] the length thereof 25:18-20 — Two cherubims of gold... covering the mercy seat with their wings 25:21 — And thou shalt put the mercy seat above upon the ark; and in the ark thou shalt put the testimony 25:22 — And there I will meet with thee, and I will commune with thee from above the mercy seat, from between the two cherubims which [are] upon the ark of the testimony
Leviticus 16:2,13-19 — Day of Atonement blood ritual¶
16:2 — Speak unto Aaron thy brother, that he come not at all times into the holy [place] within the vail before the mercy seat... that he die not: for I will appear in the cloud upon the mercy seat. 16:13 — the cloud of the incense may cover the mercy seat... that he die not 16:14 — he shall take of the blood of the bullock, and sprinkle [it] with his finger upon the mercy seat eastward; and before the mercy seat shall he sprinkle of the blood with his finger seven times. 16:15 — Then shall he kill the goat of the sin offering... and sprinkle it upon the mercy seat, and before the mercy seat: 16:16 — And he shall make an atonement for the holy [place], because of the uncleanness of the children of Israel, and because of their transgressions in all their sins: and so shall he do for the tabernacle of the congregation, that remaineth among them in the midst of their uncleanness. 16:17 — And there shall be no man in the tabernacle of the congregation when he goeth in to make an atonement in the holy [place], until he come out 16:19 — And he shall sprinkle of the blood upon it with his finger seven times, and cleanse it, and hallow it from the uncleanness of the children of Israel. 16:30 — For on that day shall [the priest] make an atonement for you, to cleanse you, [that] ye may be clean from all your sins before the LORD.
Note on vocabulary in Lev 16: The chapter uses kaphar (atonement) 16 times, taher (cleanse) in vv. 19 and 30, tumah (uncleanness) 5 times, and chattaah (sin/sin offering) 13 times. Wrath vocabulary (aph, chemah, qetseph) is ENTIRELY ABSENT from Leviticus 16. The closest to a wrath concept is "that he die not" (vv. 2, 13) — lethal divine holiness, not anger.
Wrath-and-Sacrifice OT Passages¶
Numbers 16:46-48 — Aaron's incense stops the plague¶
16:46 — And Moses said unto Aaron, Take a censer, and put fire therein from off the altar, and put on incense, and go quickly unto the congregation, and make an atonement for them: for there is wrath gone out from the LORD; the plague is begun. 16:47 — And Aaron took as Moses commanded, and ran into the midst of the congregation; and, behold, the plague was begun among the people: and he put on incense, and made an atonement for the people. 16:48 — And he stood between the dead and the living; and the plague was stayed.
Note: This is the clearest OT passage where kaphar explicitly stops divine wrath (qetseph). The vocabulary is explicit: wrath (qetseph) → plague (negeph) → atonement (kaphar) → plague stayed. Aaron's incense functions as a wrath-averting ritual act.
Numbers 25:1-13 — Phinehas turns away wrath¶
25:3 — And Israel joined himself unto Baalpeor: and the anger of the LORD was kindled against Israel. 25:4 — Take all the heads of the people... that the fierce anger of the LORD may be turned away from Israel. 25:7-8 — Phinehas... took a javelin... thrust both of them through... So the plague was stayed 25:11 — Phinehas... hath turned my wrath away from the children of Israel, while he was zealous for my sake among them 25:13 — he was zealous for his God, and made an atonement for the children of Israel.
Note: Phinehas's zealous act is called "atonement" (kaphar, v.13) and explicitly "turned wrath away" (hashib aph, v.11). This is propitiation through zealous action, not purification ritual.
Psalm 78:38 — Divine forbearance connected to kaphar¶
But he, [being] full of compassion, forgave [their] iniquity, and destroyed [them] not: yea, many a time turned he his anger away, and did not stir up all his wrath.
Hebrew parsing confirmed: kaphar (Piel impf) + aph (anger) + chemah (fury) — kaphar bridges forgiveness AND wrath-turning in a single verse. God "kaphar-ed their iniquity AND turned away his aph AND did not stir up all his chemah."
Exodus 12:12-13,23 — Passover blood as wrath-aversion¶
12:12 — For I will pass through the land of Egypt this night, and will smite all the firstborn... and against all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgment: I [am] the LORD. 12:13 — And the blood shall be to you for a token upon the houses where ye [are]: and when I see the blood, I will pass over you, and the plague shall not be upon you to destroy [you], when I smite the land of Egypt. 12:23 — For the LORD will pass through to smite the Egyptians; and when he seeth the blood upon the lintel, and on the two side posts, the LORD will pass over the door, and will not suffer the destroyer to come in unto your houses to smite [you].
Note: The Passover blood functions as protection FROM divine destructive judgment. "When I see the blood, I will pass over" — the blood averts the destroying action. This is the strongest typological basis for propitiation as wrath-turning, especially since Paul identifies Christ as "our passover" (1 Cor 5:7) and describes the hilasterion as operative "through faith in his blood" (Rom 3:25).
Additional Atonement Texts¶
Leviticus 17:11 — The blood-atonement principle¶
For the life of the flesh [is] in the blood: and I have given it to you upon the altar to make an atonement for your souls: for it [is] the blood [that] maketh an atonement for the soul.
Hebrews 9:22-26 — Heavenly purification¶
9:22 — And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and without shedding of blood is no remission. 9:23 — [It was] therefore necessary that the patterns of things in the heavens should be purified with these; but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these. 9:24 — For Christ is not entered into the holy places made with hands... but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God for us: 9:25 — Nor yet that he should offer himself often 9:26 — but now once in the end of the world hath he appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself.
Ephesians 2:13-18 — Peace through blood¶
2:13 — ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh by the blood of Christ. 2:14 — For he is our peace, who hath made both one 2:16 — that he might reconcile both unto God in one body by the cross, having slain the enmity thereby 2:17 — came and preached peace to you which were afar off
Colossians 1:14,19-22 — Reconciliation through blood of the cross¶
1:14 — In whom we have redemption through his blood, [even] the forgiveness of sins: 1:19-20 — in him should all fulness dwell; And, having made peace through the blood of his cross, by him to reconcile all things unto himself 1:21 — you, that were sometime alienated and enemies in [your] mind by wicked works, yet now hath he reconciled 1:22 — In the body of his flesh through death, to present you holy and unblameable
1 Thessalonians 1:10; 5:9 — Deliverance from wrath¶
1:10 — Jesus, which delivered us from the wrath to come. 5:9 — For God hath not appointed us to wrath, but to obtain salvation by our Lord Jesus Christ,
External Corpus Verification Verses¶
Leviticus 16:17 — Were additional sacrifices prohibited during DOA Most Holy Place ministry?¶
And there shall be no man in the tabernacle of the congregation when he goeth in to make an atonement in the holy [place], until he come out, and have made an atonement for himself, and for his household, and for all the congregation of Israel.
Result: The text prohibits any PERSON (man) from being present, not any additional sacrifice. The verse addresses exclusion of all humans from the sanctuary during the high priest's Most Holy Place ministry — isolation, not cessation of other offerings.
