The Atonement — Four Frameworks¶
A 19-study biblical investigation examining how Scripture presents the atonement through four interlocking frameworks — and how they converge at the cross, in the priestly ministry, and at the Day of Atonement.
The Question¶
The Bible does not present the atonement through a single metaphor. Instead, Scripture weaves together at least four distinct frameworks:
- Sacrificial — blood atonement through the chattat (sin offering) and asham (guilt offering)
- Covenant-Curse — Christ bearing the Deuteronomic curse to reverse it for those under the law
- Priestly — the high priest bearing sin on behalf of the people, mediating between God and humanity
- Substitutionary — the Servant of Isaiah 53 taking what others deserved
Each framework answers a different question about what went wrong and how God fixes it. This series examines each one from the Hebrew and Greek text, then watches them converge in key NT passages and in the Day of Atonement.
The Approach¶
Each of the 19 studies is a genuine investigation using the bible-study5 pipeline. Agents gathered ALL relevant evidence using Nave's Topical Dictionary, Strong's Concordance, Hebrew and Greek parsers, cross-testament parallels, and semantic search. No study presupposed its conclusion.

The 19 Studies¶
Part 1 -- The Sacrificial System¶
How does blood atonement work? What do the chattat and asham accomplish, and how does the NT appropriate them?
| # | Study | Question |
|---|---|---|
| 01 | Blood Application in the Chattat | How does blood application work in the sin offering, and what does graduated sanctuary defilement mean? |
| 02 | Hilasterion: Propitiation or Expiation? | When Paul calls Christ the hilasterion and John calls Him the hilasmos, what do these words mean? |
| 03 | Outside the Gate | Why does Hebrews connect Jesus suffering "outside the gate" with the chattat burned outside the camp? |
| 04 | The Asham (Guilt Offering) | What offenses require an asham, and what does the restitution-plus-one-fifth accomplish? |
| 05 | The Servant's Death as Asham | When Isaiah 53:10 identifies the Servant's death as an asham, what debt is being paid? |
| 06 | The Asham's Invisibility in the NT | Can the guilt-offering framework be recovered from Greek texts that lack a direct translation? |
Part 2 -- Covenant and Curse¶
How does the Deuteronomic blessing-curse covenant shape Paul's understanding of the cross?
| # | Study | Question |
|---|---|---|
| 07 | The Blessing-Curse Covenant | What triggers the Deuteronomic curse, and what is the mechanism for curse-reversal? |
| 08 | Galatians 3: Curse to Adoption | What is Paul's complete argument from curse through promise, pedagogue, and adoption? |
| 09 | Hanging on a Tree | Why is the specific mode of Christ's death — crucifixion — theologically significant? |
Part 3 -- Priestly Ministry¶
How does the high priest bear sin, and what does Christ's present intercession accomplish?
| # | Study | Question |
|---|---|---|
| 10 | Priestly Garments and Sin-Bearing | What do the high priest's garments, the gold plate, and priestly sin-bearing reveal about atonement? |
| 11 | Christ's Present Intercession | What is the nature and content of Christ's present intercessory ministry? |
| 12 | Hebrews 9-10: The Complete Argument | What is the complete argument from earthly limitation to heavenly reality? |
Part 4 -- NT Convergence Passages¶
Where do the frameworks meet? Key passages where multiple frameworks operate simultaneously.
| # | Study | Question |
|---|---|---|
| 13 | Isaiah 53: Woven Frameworks | How does Isaiah 53 weave together all the atonement frameworks in a single passage? |
| 14 | Peter's Atonement Layers | How does Peter layer multiple frameworks in 1 Peter 2:21-25 and 3:18? |
| 15 | Romans 3:21-26 | What is the theological structure of Paul's densest atonement statement? |
Part 5 -- Integration and Application¶
How do the frameworks work together in doctrine, in the sanctuary system, and in the believer's life?
| # | Study | Question |
|---|---|---|
| 16 | Which Frameworks Ground Justification? | Which atonement framework(s) ground the doctrine of justification by faith? |
| 17 | The Day of Atonement Integration | How does the Day of Atonement integrate all four frameworks into one ritual? |
| 18 | Assurance, Prayer, and Repentance | How do the frameworks shape assurance, prayer, and repentance in practice? |
| 19 | The Complete Path of Sin and the Two Goats | What is the complete path of sin through the sanctuary, and what do the two goats accomplish? |
