Direct quotation chains (from TR- files and library entries)¶
- Isa 53:5 (rapha Niphal) → LXX iaomai → 1 Pet 2:24 (iathete, Aor Pass)
- Isa 53:12 (nasa Qal + rabbim) → LXX anaphero + pollon → Heb 9:28 (anenenkein + pollon)
- Isa 53:12 (rabbim) → Matt 26:28 "shed for many (pollon)"
- Isa 53:11-12 (rabbim) → Mark 10:45 "ransom for many (pollon)"
- Isa 53:11 (yatsdiq rabbim) → Rom 5:19 "many be made righteous (dikaioi)"
- Isa 52:7 (shalom) → Eph 6:15 "gospel of peace" / Acts 10:36 "preaching peace"

Structural parallels identified¶
-
Isa 52:13-53:12 ↔ Phil 2:5-11: Exaltation (52:13 / 2:9-11) → humiliation (52:14-53:9 / 2:6-8) → exaltation result (53:10-12 / 2:9-11). Both use servant language (avdi / doulou). Both describe voluntary self-emptying (heerah nafsho / ekenosen heauton). Both end with universal acknowledgment (52:15 kings / 2:10-11 every knee).
-
Isa 53 ↔ Lev 16: Both deploy all three sin-words (pesha + avon + chattat). Lev 16:21 is the ONLY Pentateuch verse using all three together. Both involve priestly sin-bearing (HP enters Most Holy / Servant bears sin). Both involve substitutionary removal (scapegoat carries avon / Servant "laid on him the avon of us all").
-
Isa 53:4,12 ↔ Exo 28:38: Both use nasa + avon with a priestly subject. Aaron bears avon for acceptance (ratsah); the Servant bears sin for justification (yatsdiq).
Curse-framework parallels (NT interpretation)¶
- Isa 53:12 "numbered with the transgressors" → Gal 3:13 "cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree" (quoting Deut 21:23)
- Isa 53:9 "grave with the wicked" → 1 Pet 2:24 "epi to xylon" (upon the tree/wood)
- NOTE: The curse connection is made by NT authors (Paul in Galatians, Peter in 1 Peter) applying Deut 21:22-23 to Christ's death. Isaiah 53 itself does NOT use curse vocabulary (arar, qelalah, alah are all absent).
