Hiphil Stem

Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/grammar-reference/hebrew/stem-hiphil.md

The Hiphil is the primary causative stem. Key functions: 1. Causative-factitive — subject causes object to do/become the Qal action 2. Productive / internal causative — subject produces or enters a state 3. Declarative / estimative — subject declares or treats object as X 4. Denominative — derives verbs from nouns

Application to Isa 53:10: - הֶֽחֱלִ֔י (hecheli) — Hiphil.Perf.3ms of chalah: "he [YHWH] CAUSED [the Servant] to be sick/grieve" - Function 1 (causative-factitive): YHWH is the external agent causing the Servant's suffering

Application to Isa 53:6: - הִפְגִּ֣יעַ (hipgia) — Hiphil.Perf.3ms of paga: "he [YHWH] CAUSED [iniquity] to impinge upon him" - Function 1: YHWH caused the iniquity of all to meet/fall upon the Servant

Application to Isa 53:11: - יַצְדִּ֥יק (yatsdiq) — Hiphil.Impf.3ms of tsadaq: "he shall cause to be righteous / declare righteous" - Function 3 (declarative): The righteous Servant declares/causes the many to be righteous - This is the justification action — the restitution component of the asham

Application to Isa 53:12: - הֶעֱרָ֤ה (heerah) — Hiphil.Perf.3ms of arah: "he poured out" - Function 2 (productive): The Servant produced the pouring out of his soul

Construct State

Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/grammar-reference/hebrew/construct-state.md

The construct chain places two nouns in immediate juxtaposition expressing a genitive/possessive relation. The first noun (nomen regens) is phonologically bound to the second (nomen rectum).

Application to Isa 53:10: - "tasim asham nafsho" — the construction "make his soul an asham" uses the construct relationship to identify nafsho (his soul/self) as the content of the asham - חֵ֥פֶץ יְהוָ֖ה (chephets YHWH) — "the pleasure/purpose OF YHWH" — construct chain identifying whose purpose prospers

Application to Isa 53:11: - מֵעֲמַ֤ל נַפְשֹׁו (me'amal nafsho) — "from the travail OF his soul" — construct showing source - בְּדַעְתֹּ֗ו (bedato) — "by/in his knowledge" — instrumental use

Corporate Solidarity

Source: D:/bible/bible-studies/grammar-reference/hebrew/corporate-solidarity.md

A grammaticalized pattern where a collective-noun subject is construed as a single corporate entity that can act, incur guilt, and receive judgment as one unit. The diagnostic is concord alternation between singular (corporate unity) and plural (constituent members).

Application to Isa 53:11-12 and Rom 5:12-21: - הָרַבִּ֑ים (ha-rabbim) — "the many" — the corporate group benefiting from the Servant's asham - The Servant functions as corporate head: his single action (the asham) produces results for the many (larabbim) - This is the same structure as Adam's sin affecting "all men" (Rom 5:12,18) — one man's action, corporate result - The "much more" in Rom 5:15,17 asserts that the corporate benefit through Christ exceeds the corporate damage through Adam - Joshua 7:11 paradigm: "Israel hath sinned" (singular verb, corporate subject) — one man's guilt predicated of the whole people. Isaiah 53 inverts this: one man's righteousness benefits the whole people.
